The Owl of Wisdom

The Owl of Wisdom

Last evening I was walking at beautiful Radnor lake and noticed an owl perched low in a oak tree. I called to it using a trilling of my tongue, while blowing through my mouth with a low OO sound. The wise old owl gazed at me with auspicious wisdom and power. I had the feeling that there was some significance of this owl crossing my path.

The message was a clear one for me. I’ll be paraphrasing from a book called Medicine Cards by Sams and Carson, 1988. The book uses theology about an animal’s significance in the American Indian culture.

Sams and Carson say that the owl shows up when you need to be reminded of your powerful insight and spiritual powers. It also shows people to use their magical powers for good, as opposed to selfish purposes. But the most important message that I gleaned from the book was that people may be subconsciously frightened who are around a person with spiritual insight, because they feel that this individual can see through them (pp. 121-122).

In my life many people have come and gone. I notice that the more real I become, another layer of friends decides to move on. I’ve always wondered about the significance of such an event. Of course, I feel pain deep in my soul when anyone decides to leave my life for any purpose, but the worst kind of pain is when a friend doesn’t share the reason for his/her departure—they simply disappear from your sight.

I had an amazing best friend for years. We did everything together. We talked two or more times a day. I knew everything about her and she knew everything about me. We helped each other through hard times and celebrated the good times. However, after eight years of love, she simply disappeared without a trace, not even telling me why she had gone. She moved from her home and changed jobs, so I couldn’t even confront her, which I longed for. So, I had been left with an empty hole not knowing why, or even if, she is safe.

I go back to the message of the Owl for comfort. Maybe all that I understand about her heart was too much for her. Perhaps, as I look back, my compassion and advice began to eat away at what she wanted to hide from herself and from everyone else. Maybe, the owl’s wisdom for me is about not sharing all that I see. Maybe I should just pray instead of trying to fix friends.

I can’t know for sure. But I don’t want to retract from any spiritual gift God has given me. I do, however, want to be authentic and loving toward those who may be receiving wisdom from Spirit through me. With that, takes an awesome amount of responsibility.

If you are a person who uses a healing modality for your life’s work, this is a message for you. Not every insight is meant to be shared. When you have a vision or thought about a person, ask your heart if the client or friend is willing to hear your perceptions. You may even ask for a confirmation of some sort. You may wait for the client to ask to share what you’re thinking. This is always a good practice when dealing with people who are not on a spiritual path.

Make no bones about it: Not everyone is spiritual and not everyone cares to know about your spiritual insight. In fact, there are many people who will scoff at your beliefs and think that you are a fraud. They may even call you out because they do not believe. But don’t let any insult or comment keep you from your meditation practice and your desire to help others with your spiritual gifts.

A small amount of negativity in your life is little price to pay for the good that you will do as you expand your mind and body to be a conduit of Unlimited Good.
