Navigating Through Negatives #navigatethenegatives #principle #psychology #relationshipadvice

We live in a world of illusion. What we see in front of us is filtered through our human mind, which contains memories of everything we’ve ever seen, done, and felt throughout our lives. So, when something negative happens to us, we not only feel the ramifications of the present moment, but we also feel the negativity of every past situation that resembled it. So, how do we overcome this ever-growing negativity?

The Course in Miracles says:

There is no (human) world because it is a thought apart from God, and made to separate the Father and the Son, and break away a part of God Himself and thus destroy His Wholeness. Can a world that comes from this idea be real… Deny illusions, but accept the truth. Deny you are a shadow, briefly laid upon a dying world. Release your mind (from the past), and you will look upon a world released.

I remember a time in my life when I had been in a relationship with a man whom I thought would be my life partner. He lived two hours away from me, but we had been dating for three years. One day he called me and told me with bravado that he had a date with a woman the next evening.

I laughed. “You’re kidding, right?”

He said, “No. I met a really nice woman, and I want to go out with her.”

And the fight began. What started out as a great relationship turned into a nightmare in one minute. He broke up with me, hung up on me, and I didn’t hear from him again. As I sat on my living room couch crying, I called my mother, who had recently moved to Arizona be closer to me. She told me to come to her immediately.

As I entered her apartment, she said nothing, but held out her arms to hold her tearful son. I actually fell asleep in the comfort of a mother who had left my father and her six kids when I was eight. As I fell into a dream, I heard a voice say: “You are not crying because of Rob, you are crying because of your mother leaving you! Heal the wound with your mother, and you will heal all of the issues around relationships with men!”

When I woke up, I was certainly on the road to understanding the anxious attachment of my own soul to every man I had ever dated. This is just one example of how the past can color the present. My relationship with Rob was more of an illusion than it was real. He had been recently divorced, not out of the closet, had four children who were pissed because he was gay, and he lived in an unforgiving, very religious town that would have probably not used him as a physician had they known he was gay. So, the likelihood of him being a viable relationship for me was small. I didn’t lose him, really. I lost the idea that someone could be my perfect partner and protect me from the world, which is simply one big illusion, anyway.

Negativity can only be changed by applying truth and principle to your reality—right now. What do you need to learn from your current negative situation? When you get that one simple truth, you will begin to dig yourself out of the deep hole of anxiousness and depression. I promise!

Stand for Something or Fall for Nothing! #authenticfriends #principle #takeastand

In a world that wants us to conform to the norm on just about every subject, sometimes taking a stand means separating yourself from loved ones. In my personal life, I noticed that I didn’t have to do much of the ostracizing from friends and family, after taking a stand for anything. Friends who cared more about judgment than about me, automatically disassociated themselves almost immediately. So, the norm not only desires conformity, but also wants us to hide in the closet with our opinions so that our close associations and friends don’t have to—by proxy—stand with us.

The truth is: personally, I didn’t ask anyone to stand with me on any of my platforms. I simply wanted to do work that felt authentic to my soul. So, as I felt the splash of success around some of my work, friends automatically began to go away in droves. I literally lost ten close friends in the period of two years. I was disheartened and saddened. Even to this day, when I think about some of my old friends. I’m amazed at their disappearance from my life. The steadfast friends, however, amaze me even more.

Friends who endure through the test of time, know that loving you does not depend on conforming to your truths. In fact, really good friends and supportive family members, will quietly urge you to be all that you are and more, as they recognize that friendship has little to do with opinions and much more to do with the act of not judging.

I can love you completely but not believe in anything you stand for. This kind of love is difficult, because usually friendships are based on commonality. What about the married man or woman, who has been your friend throughout your adult life? Your kids grew up together. You double-dated with your wives! You took vacations together. Now, your close friend has decided to set the record straight and come out of the closet. He and his wife are fine with the decision. He is the same person he has been throughout the friendship, but suddenly you see him differently. You question every moment and every word he every spoke. You decide he is the one who has been lying. You tell him he is no longer a friend. How is that fair?

This man decides to be authentic, and everyone who is important to him abandons him in the moment of his greatest need for support. He finds in all of the fifty friends who walked away, the one person he didn’t expect to stand with him, knocking at his door and asking if he is okay. At this time, the newly out-of-the-closet man begins to reassess what friendship is and how he can be a better person and friend to the new people he attracts to his life.

I get it that people leave in the case of coming out, because of guilt by association, but true friends don’t care what other’s think and especially shouldn’t care whom they choose to love.
In fact, if you care what others think about you in any way, you will never be who you need to be in life. Stretch out your arms today and figure out when you decided to stop being you and conform in some harsh way to the world and society.

Today is the day to take back your authentic life!

Capitalizing on Truth #authenticyou #outofthecloset #tellthetruth

We live in a world where truth has more meanings than the word love. Truth may be telling someone what they want to hear, what you think they can handle, or your version of the truth. Most often, though, what we hear from even our closest friends is a modified version of truth, filtered by many aspects of our humanness—fear, compassion, and avoidance. This happens most often in the news when political sides eschew even the minor issues. Where can we find honesty in this world?

When we live in the fear of people finding out we are gay, of a political persuasion, spiritual, or even partake of the occasional use of pot, we must reduce our words to half-truths and live from an unauthentic place. Who has the energy for that kind of life, in hiding, concocting new version of truth on the fly for each individual in your life and for different reasons? This is a no-brainer.

“Tell the truth and tell it fast!” is one of my favorite sayings of late. But, displaying your truth for the world to see, like anything in life, takes practice and a cavalier soul. You must be unwilling to hide any aspect of your life. This kind of moxie usually comes from years of letting people judge you, living in an enclosed box, and suddenly finally realizing that who you are is righteous, perfect, and even one of the vast parts of God, no matter what your nature. God is all in all. You are fine and beautiful exactly the way you are right now.

Being truthful doesn’t mean that you have nowhere to grow. Of course, we all have a spiritual path on earth that may take our entire physical lives to reach. So, our version of the truth will change. Our thoughts about life will alter during the course of our life. But, that doesn’t mean we should deny our truth in the moment. What you feel, what you express unabashedly, and what you think is pertinent matters. Not everyone needs to know your opinion and be obstructed by it. Your opinion is yours.

I’ve learned that since my opinions often change, proclaiming them at the top of a mountain may not be to my advantage. Often, I take the bits of truth I learn daily and tuck them into my heart, knowing that eventually some solid truth will raise to the surface. In other words, you don’t have to know everything to have truth or to wear it proudly. You simply have to be honest with yourself and with others. Being authentic is always the prize!

Often, the best answer to a question is: I just don’t know—yet!

Swallowing the Day-After Pill! #healing #recoveringfromgrief #spiritualadvice #recovery

When pain slaps across the face, unexpectedly, sometimes you remain more stunned than hurt. But a day or two after, you look at yourself in the mirror and notice an aching bruise that was not there before. How do you deal with that metaphoric grief?

I have had a busy week on set, rehearsing, and taking workshops and classes, so I never really had time to digest the death of a close friend. As a result, I’m a little sullen today. I woke up with a knot in my stomach and bit of an anxiety hangover, for lack of a better word. I’m busy again today, so I want to take some quiet time this morning to grieve, sit with my sorrow, and create a plan for closure. You might be wondering what all of this might look like, because you, too, wish you could release from some kind of pain or grief and move forward into the light of love and peace.

For me, quiet time always looks much the same. I separate myself like the Master Teacher Jesus did in the desert and simply be quiet, which is often harder than you could imagine. We keep ourselves busy and occupied, primarily, so we don’t face our pain. But, sometimes, letting go of our psychological drama is as simple as feeling the chair you sit on, surrounding yourself with your favorite blanket, or listening to some beautiful music. The key is certainly the quietness. In the silence, there is a secret place, a secret meeting place—Spirit is the there!

If sorrow has made its home in your heart, then you may want to simply let that grief rise to the surface to be healed. This is like removing a bandage after the bleeding stops, so that the air can hit your wound and oxidize it to scab. Even though a scab is never pretty, it is the next step to healing. Honor the healing process and, especially, protect the scab from anymore harm.

The Japanese have a wonderful tradition. When something breaks, they fix it and paint the crack in the surface with gold. I’ve been thinking about what this tradition might look like with our own hearts. Paint your scab gold. Honor the cracks in your mind and in your heart! Paint them your favorite color. And love them, until they become a vessel of honor.

Finally, the plan to bring closure to your grief, might be printing a picture of your loved one (if it’s a death), writing something special on the picture, and placing it appropriately where you can slowly let your grief turn into wonder, joy, and peace. For me, I have begun to think of my friend who has passed as being an angel in a place where no more pain exists. To add to my wonder, I imagine that now she is in that spiritual place, perhaps, where she can touch my life as she couldn’t being in the physical, human realm. She is always with me in my heart.

Namaste!

What About the Children? #inspiration #spiritualadvice #artsinschool

In the heart of the poorest part of Fort Lauderdale, ArtServe25 is a museum for Stonewall, gay and lesbian art, and the voices of every individual who wants to make his or her presence known—your sexual orientation doesn’t matter. ArtServe, as well as being a museum, also sponsors many open-mike events for kids to express their music, poems, and rap.

As I sat waiting to sing my song at an open mike night for any adult or child, two young African American men, about fifteen years old, stood up and introduced themselves as rap artists. I held my breath, because, generally, I think rap is a little repulsive. The thumping, annoying beat, combined with the, usually, vulgar repartee, makes me want to crawl in a hole and plug my ears. However, sitting in the front row, I had no other choice but to listen. And listen, I did.

What I heard astounded and astonished me. Though the teens were off pitch and had to start over a few times, the words they spoke touched my heart deeply. They talked of living in a world where the expectation of them was to be in a gang and use drugs and have sex at a young age. They shared their story about finding alternatives to that lifestyle in the arts and rising above the harsh poverty and abuse they lived as children. A few times, I was moved to tears. I’m actually going back this evening to hear an entire evening of just teens called The Voice Box. Free admission. If you’re in the Fort Lauderdale area, it starts at seven this evening (March 27).

The expression of the arts through children is more important than we know. These beautiful kids are in recording artist programs and music schools that allow them to express daily IF they keep a C average in school and never use degrading language about women, express in ways that uplift and inspire, and respect each other.

These rules, however, don’t mean that they have to inhibit the voice of pain in their rap. What I saw, in retrospect, is that this art of music and rap has evolved their young minds in a way where each of them can have an individual voice. I believe that in the culture in which they matured, gang and pack mentality is what had been driving them to protect each other from other gangs and more abuse. But, this arts program has given them a new pack, a new group of amazing friends and family who support their right to make powerful change in their community and in their schools.

When they entered the building with their two teachers, I could see, immediately, that each child needed each other to stay the course, not acquiescing to the animal instincts that drive the adults and older teenagers living that same harsh street and gang life.

In general, if you are not fighting for arts programs in your local schools, you need to be. The difference in death and life is in the hands of our lawmakers who often take away the precious gift of music, fine arts, and literature and give their support to moneymaking sports programs, which also need to be nurtured.

Navigating Death and Dying

A dear friend of mine passed early this morning so unexpectedly, so early—at fifty, at the height of her talent, her beautiful singing and acting talent. I had the pleasure of working with her often enough to know her heart and her inner voice. My soul aches at the loss of her humanness. But, Even though we may be grieving, consider this: The passing of a human soul can be to our benefit, especially when we have a soul connection to that person as she was in a human body. Now she is in spirit, acting as Spirit, completely and totally.

No soul dies—ever. It goes on—to where? we certainly don’t know. But, I am sure, the soul continues on a spiritual journey far beyond my imagination. My hope is that these souls will continue learning, and, perhaps, they may even come back to help the soul clusters that they were living with as humans. I have always felt the divine presence of some of my closest friends who have passed. I know I’ve spoken of it before. You can look up my blog: “Linda Has Passed, Now What?” to find out my views about this.

But, what I want to touch on today is the prayer I was led to in my morning meditation. First, I felt my friend’s presence all around me, as I began to speak. Remember, if she is one in God, and I am one in God, then we are One!

So, I shared this truth with her spirit, and maybe with my own as I began, “We are one today, more One than I had ever imagined, so soon, and so quickly. But, I’m thankful for your transition to perfection, because I know that Spirit does everything perfectly and in perfect timing. So, I’m knowing that you and I, and all the people you have touched are ONE right now, rejoicing in the life we shared together on earth and collectively, with the angels, readying you for your journey onward and forward. I release you to the law of life, knowing that your soul will always be with me. Be happy, be free, be completely and totally LOVE! And so it is!”

Waiting for the Prize in the Wake of Disaster #inspiration #lifepurpose #spiritualadvice

I have had friends believing for healing when they were told they had days to live. I have known people believing for a job—any job—when they were using their last dollar to buy food. I have been with family members when a child was lost, though birth was expected. How does anyone hold on to faith in the wake of disaster?

Recently, I have been doing my best to continue to confess my truth no matter what I see in front of me. We must realize that what we see, though it may feel real, factual, and physically pertinent is still yet an illusion of sorts. All that we see initiates from the portals of our minds.

What we view in front of us, as on a movie screen, comes not from the outside, but from the inside of our minds. Out of the belief of our human minds, we most often speak, see, imagine, and believe. But to live by the Principles of Spirit, we must deny what looks to be real and believe, by faith, in exactly what we have treated for in our prayers—until we evidence of our belief appear. Then, alas, the truth is revealed.

Cursing the fig tree is one of the miracles of Jesus in the Gospels. It is included in the gospels of Mark and Matthew, but not in Luke or John. In the Mark, it comes in two parts: in the first, just after the Triumphal entry into Jerusalem and before the Cleansing of the Temple, Jesus curses a fig tree for being barren; in the second part, presumably the next day, the tree has withered, prompting Jesus to speak of the efficacy of prayer. (Wikipedia)

So, finding faith in the midst of trauma is more about practicing your truth in happy and peaceful times. When life works with you, and you are happy, you should consider believing in your truth and practicing only trusting in the power of Universal Principle, despite what you see in front of you. For example, if you have an amazing time with family, friends, or a partner, enjoy the moment. Know, however, that what you feel in the moment is from the power of your mind, not from the experience you see in front of you. A vast difference exists in this paradigm of thought between recognizing illusion from truth. It all begins in the consciousness. If you practice knowing your truth daily, when something negative happens, you will be less likely to acquiesce to depression and anxiety.

When you don’t buy into something negative appearing on your life screen, then it quickly goes away. But if you allow yourself the time to step into the drama, you find yourself completely depressed and ailing from a simple illusion. Most of the time, and I believe this fully, what you think happened and for what reason is completely opposite of the truth. When you don’t label the circumstance and believe all things are pertinent and coming from Love, your reality shifts in the twinkling of an eye.
