Bo Sebastian's Finding Authentic You!: Fear of Failure

What parent would say to her toddler, "Your painting is out of the lines and is ugly?" So, then, why are we so critical of our own use of creative power? Read on...

Fear of Failure

I offer you the premise of creating without the fear of failure. I know one Law with certainty. This Law is the creative energy that manifests the world and everything in it. This creative energy is also a part of you and I. When it reaches out its hand or speaks Its Word, the world listens and acquiesces to Its power. So, too, when we reach out from the oneness of God, we create in abundance and from the unlimited field of Spirit’s subjective mind. This subjective, unshaped and unformed energy is simply waiting to manifest and is at our disposal at all times. So, I ask you this: Can we take that which is God’s, creating from the power of God, and make a mistake?

If you are made in the image of God, then you are a part of God, a son or daughter. So, starting with this truth, can you say that God has made a mistake in creating you? If you agree with the premise that you are a part of God, can you begin to see yourself—exactly as you are—as a beautiful, wonderful, manifestation of the Omnipotent One? Let’s start with this knowledge today and see if we can release from the idea of failure completely.

Say this aloud: “I am a child or a portion of God. The Kingdom of God is within me. Of all of the miracles that Jesus did, even Jesus said that I could do greater things. Jesus was speaking to me! The miracle I am is not a mistake.”

So, Divine Child of God, made of the wisdom of Creator Excellence, you have been imbued with the power to create, just as Jesus or any of the prophets did. I would suggest that the metaphor of this world is that the children of the Kingdom are much like your children and my children—they must learn from trying. Which one of us humans would hand back a picture to a three-year-old child who painted out of the lines and say, “This is Failure! Don’t ever paint again?”

Most parents would hang that first picture up with pride. “Look, this is what my wonderful child created! This is the first step to him/her becoming a famous artist!” We love when our children try, even when they make mistakes. Trying shows fortitude and manifests creative power—those same attributes God expects us to use as spiritual children of the Kingdom.

So, now that you understand the concept of growing up from a child in the kingdom to becoming an incredible and powerful adult, you can see that all of our movement toward maturity is a step, maybe a tiny step, perhaps, toward creating bigger and greater miracles than any prophet on earth. Just as Leonardo da Vinci took years to manifest his greatness, we, too, must labor over our creative work and hone our skills as novice creators. No famous artist comes out of the womb with the perfect expertise of greatness. However, just as Mr. da Vinci said, “Where the Spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art.” And, “Art is never finished, only abandoned!” The seed power is within us. But sometimes our ego, or even the voices from our critical past, often supersedes Truth, causing us to project failure on our path to success. If we stop here, with the idea that we are not good enough or our project is simple or unrefined, then we will never produce Great Art.

You are not a mistake, Child of God. That which proceeds from you in all forms of creating is neither a mistake nor a failure.

Take the pressure off of yourself. Learn to look at your life with a subjective and a compassionate eye. Know, too, that you and everything you create is simply a stepping stone toward the greatest power anyone could be given: the power to use the creative energy within you to dream, sew seeds of power, and learn to work with the universal energy to manifest greatness. This gift is yours for the taking now!
And so it is!

Life Without Expectation

If you expected no results from anything that you set out to accomplish or in any relationship, what would your life be like? You would simply do things, because you are inclined to? You would plant the seed. God would take care of growing the dream, the relationship, and the result. If you lived life like this, could you be setting your life up for a great surprise?

Disappointment comes mostly from expectation. Delight comes from trust. Think about a child on Christmas morning. Then, imagine your last relationship or project. Which picture is more likely to end in a happy result? I had a friend say to me, yesterday, “If you knew that you were going to be hurt as a result of a decision, would you make that decision anyway?”

I told him that I would avoid the hurt at all costs.

His reply, “Bo, I don’t think that you’re wired that way. You are a spiritual man who knows that, sometimes, life takes pain to get to the best result. Knowing that about yourself, would you still choose something, if you knew the result would be painful?”

This time I replied, “If the pain was in the form of relationship, I would avoid it. For all other parts of my life, I would be okay with facing hard times to get to the lesson or the good.”

My friend huffed and puffed a bit. “I don’t believe that about you at all! I think you are hard-wired to live life with one big expectation—knowing that all things are working together for Good! With that in mind, you would face what you need to face.”

I acquiesced. “I suppose you’re right. But, let me go on record and say that ‘I don’t like being hurt one bit!’”
We both laughed. No one likes hurting for any reason. No one wants to set out to do a project or a race and decide ahead of time that he will break a leg, or she will run out of money and go bankrupt in the midst of creating her life’s dream.

I remember a time when I got my first big book publishing deal. I was set to have my book launch on a day in March. I had invited 100s of friends and family, spent hundreds of dollars on food, and invited the uppity ups in the publishing world. Everyone was set to undergird my dream. However, that day, the Nashville flood happened.
I remember sitting on the porch, watching the rain destroy all the work I had done to my gardens the day before, and wondering, “What the hell, God?” The launch was ruined, not to mention most of Nashville was devastated. I couldn’t even talk about my book or rescheduling for weeks after. As a result, my book—my dream’—had a hard start. Even still, a year later, the book surprised even my publisher, hitting the New York Times Bestsellers list. But, I believe, this happened only after I let go of my expectations. Most novice writers think, if I just write a book, it will a bestseller! Writing the book is just the beginning of a long process to be famous and make money.

Most days, now, I pray believing that the biggest and best will be the result of any endeavor, even relationship. Instead of limiting Spirit to my expectation of the result, I plant the seed, create a clear vision, and then let go. In this way, I find that I’m not disappointed, and God can place in my path all that I need to be the best, learn the most, and get the ultimate in the experience.

When I release from expectation, I don’t give up. I simply exchange my limited idea of the result for God’s unlimited abundance. This is a recipe for success!

Pulling Teeth for a Living

I know a dentist who checks mouths for abscesses, cavities, dead roots, loose crowns, gingivitis, and many more dental-related diseases, everyday. I asked him if he ever gets tired of his work. He told me that the one task he never tires of is pulling teeth. He loves the feeling of getting a dead tooth out of someone’s mouth. As he is a spiritual man, his reason is that nothing dying or dead belongs in anyone’s body—not even an old thought.

As a quip, I replied, “Buddy, every human is dying every minute of every day!”

He replied, “Not me! I am a living, breathing, and powerful part of God. Spirit, my friend, is not dying. In fact, God is constantly reproducing itself in all of us and in the universe every moment of every day! Even your cells are reproducing at a rate of two trillion times a day!”

I couldn’t argue with his theory, even though, it’s clear that as a human being, we are all on a clear path toward dying, eventually. At that amazing rate of cellular mitosis, I wondered, however why.

Apparently, my dentist friend considered that, as long as we are living, we are not dying. If someone thinks he/she is dying, then he or she often gives up living completely and fully. Also, he explained that disease comes from the inability for cells to reproduce. So, this paradigm of “dying” could be as a result of our minds acquiescing to death. Who knows?

I often have friends say to me, after meeting my mother, “She is so vibrant and alive at 82!” As I watch Mom, daily, even though she has many aches and pains, she is a woman with purpose—every day. Because of that, nothing much has kept her down. Twenty-four hours after her triple bypass, she was walking on a treadmill. Three days after her operation, she grabbed me by the collar and said, “Get me the hell out of this hospital!” And, she meant it.

When she got home, she didn’t mope, as some doctors said she might. No, she rested a bit (two days) and then got back to her daily routine as quickly as she could. I noticed that her routine—the mundane, for me—actually kept her life purposeful. As long as she could put out the dinner for the day, clean, wash clothes, walk the dog, and go shopping twice a month, she was good! I envy her fortitude and hope I can be as alive at her age, too.

I have developed a routine in my time off that has kept me busier than I was when I was working. I find myself writing more, getting projects finished, spending more time with friends, volunteering, and spending energy letting my soul lead me to the treasures of life. This way of living, keeps me not dying, daily.

I had a tooth decay and die in my mouth about three months ago. I had to get an implant so that I could get a cap to replace the useless tooth. The implant was grafted into my jaw and gums. The process sometimes takes six months. I’m in the waiting now for my new tooth. Life often feels like a waiting game, waiting for the new to replace the old.
Life is for the living. Just like my new tooth, every moment of every day is a chance to live life and replace that, which no longer serves us, with something more powerful and alive! This is a recipe for a long, purposeful life.

Code Black #Blackfriday

Does anyone else find the term Black Friday annoying, or at the very least, odd? I never understood the real meaning of the name until a couple of years ago: The day after Thanksgiving is the unofficial start of the holiday season. And for retailers, that means big bucks. It's that increase in revenues–and for most retailers the first time to turn a profit for the year (getting in the black). That’s how Black Friday got its name.

Nonetheless, I still think it’s a bit creepy that people stay up all night on Thanksgiving and stand in line at stores the Friday after Thanksgiving—even after six today—to get the best bargains for Christmas. Are we really that nation of people who consider the holidays to be all about the gifts—the really wonderful and sometimes even tasteful gifts?
I go back and forth from enjoying the gift giving to resenting it. Some years ago, when I wasn’t making too much money, I really resented the fact that I was expected to buy gifts for certain people in my life. That was certainly a “RED FRIDAY” year.

The next year, trying to stay out of debt, I made gifts for everyone, because I just didn’t want to acquiesce to all the hype! I really did enjoy giving the gifts I made. I’m not sure anyone else enjoyed receiving the homemade fruitcake and knitted toilet paper cozies! LOL It was a fun endeavor and made the process a little more personal than buying a gift card.

I have to admit I’m a much better giver than I am a receiver. I would rather get a gift card than a shirt that I’ll never wear. But, on the other hand, I would rather get something that a friend or family member really sought out to find, because he or she knew I would simply love it. This has actually happened a few times in my life, and the feeling was wonderful. We are all so interested in getting the best bargains and fulfilling people’s gift lists, we lose the entire personal premise of giving. The joy in giving is actually knowing that you have bought the perfect gift for someone you care about. Most of us shut our eyes, pick a bargain, and hope the gift serves its purpose. I don’t want my Secret Santa to be that person. Aw… There I go again with the Christmas expectation!

Once a dear friend knew I was enamored with butterflies. She bought a beautiful, amber, crystal butterfly for my birthday. Another friend bought me a hewn stone Buddha. As you can see, I have a thing for beautiful, significant gifts.

This year, my family decided to forgo the gift giving and donate all the money we would have spent on gifts to a charity. The 8- and 10-year-old kids were a bit disappointed when we told them. But, hey, when we get up at 6 a.m. on Christmas morning to feed the poor, they’ll get a good taste of what it is like to be poor and not have everything handed to them on a platter—a turkey platter. “I remember when I was a kid, all I got was a yoyo for Christmas,” Daddy used to say.

Oh, God! Have I become my father?

Hell! Deck the Friggin’ halls and get out of my way! I’m going shopping!

Bo Sebastian's Finding Authentic You!: #12-Steps to Sanity

#12-Steps to Sanity

We have all heard the serenity prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” But how much do we really know about the 12-Step Programs that have literally helped millions, maybe billions, of people over the past 70 years?

Research about 12-Step programs is difficult to obtain because maintaining anonymity requires that researches stay a proper distance away. Yet, according to insiders in AA, 33 percent of the 8,000 North American members it surveyed had remained sober for over 10 years. Twelve percent were sober for 5 to 10 years; 24 percent were sober 1 to 5 years; and 31 percent were sober for less than a year.

The success, in my estimation, has much to do with accountability and the ability to be transparent to a group of understanding people whose compassion supersedes even therapists, family, and friends. A great deal of my own success with helping people through difficult times has come from my own shortcomings and difficulties in life. Nothing is more powerful in the healing process than community and compassion. We can all learn a great lesson from the program.

Though the Twelve Steps started for Alcoholism, it has reached its behavior modification program into thirty-six different branches:

In this time of giving and holidays, support people who are recovering from addictions in any way you can, especially with your compassion. I know in this week of thanks, I’m grateful for its cofounder, Bill Wilson, for writing the Big Book.

Cleaning Up the Mess: #Thankfulness

Last Sunday, Dr. Bob Luckin said this about thankfulness: “When you clean up after a party, be thankful that you have had the opportunity to have special people to your home and were able to experience joy, love, and fun.” After hearing his thoughts, I had realized I had stopped having parties because of the reality that I would have to clean up the mess afterward.

Suddenly, I wondered if I had missed even more blessings in my life because of my distaste for cleaning. I began to search my heart to consider what might be standing in my way about cleaning, as I have learned the three amazing questions to ask myself whenever I feel bad or indifference about anything:

1.) What wants to happen here?
2.) What do I need to let go of, to let this happen? and
3.) What is the gift that I bring to this situation?

In answer to question number one: God wants to bring more joy into my life by gathering my friends and family together.

Question two: I need to let go of the idea that cleaning up is a bad thing. When I was a child, after my mom left my dad, the children were responsible for all the cooking and cleaning. I resented my mother and my father for forcing a kid to get down on his knees and clean up messes. It’s time I let go of that old thought.

Question three: The special gift that I bring is the good news that I can initiate fun and joy with friends without feeling that I have to impose a negative feeling about cleaning afterwards. I can clear an old resentment, simply by understanding it, having compassion about it, and rethinking the old thought in a new way.

What I see even more clearly now is that I have been “ungrateful” during parties that I have thrown every time I let myself grieve the clean-up process. Even during the party, I’m already thinking about the mess afterward—keeping myself from experiencing ALL of the joy of the moment. How many times have you not experienced the NOW, because you were thinking about something negative in the future?

Today, I commit to living in the moment, no matter what the consequence. This year, I’m having a large gathering for Christmas dinner. I noticed that as soon as I offered to have it at my house, I began to regret it, because of all the work. Now, I have resubmitted the issue to my own brain. I will consider how wonderful it is to have great friends and family to invite to my house. As I prepare to cook and then clean up afterwards, the entire time, I will do my best to honor those close relationships, by being grateful.

This is the season to understand thankfulness. I’m grateful to Dr. Bob for uncovering a place in my life where I can love bigger and receive more joy!
