Owl Medicine #NativeAmericanMedicine

Owl Medicine

Steeped in the Native American way, lies an untraditional brand of medicine, which does not impose its pharmaceuticals upon one’s body, but improves the connection to the Great Mystery of Life. Our animal friends exhibit patterns that will bring these messages of healing to those with keen eyes willing to see the metaphors in their message.

Today, majestic and powerful, a grand owl flew across my path. I watched as it sailed from tree to tree, finding its home in a large pine outside my door. The owl seemed to ask me to draw into complete harmony with its strength and essence. To gain understanding from these brothers and sisters of the animal kingdom we must be open to being human, being vulnerable, and seeking wholeness with God and the universe.

Traditionally, owl hunts its prey at night and sits in the east, the place of illumination and clairvoyance. Not only can owl see in the dark, it can also accurately pinpoint and identify any sound.

An owl’s feathers are silent. They are deceiver feathers, because you cannot hear an owl fly. Its beak and talons are sharp and kill its prey quickly and accurately. In many cultures the owl is a symbol of wisdom. Even Athena, the goddess of wisdom, had a companion owl on her shoulder, which revealed unseen truths to her. Owl lit up this goddess’s blind side, enabling her to speak the whole truth. (Medicine Cards, by Jamie Sams & David Carson, Published by Bear & Company)

After the owl passed me, I immediately went into a meditation. I asked for guidance from God through message of the owl. Lately, I have been feeling as if Spirit is leading me down a new path toward enlightenment I have never before known. The message from the owl, then, must be that I should become vulnerable to the unseen powers of spirit wanting to work through me and in my life, hopefully to heal and lead others to clarity and their authentic selves.

New Challenge: Go to Week 5 of the “Year to CLEAR Challenge” at www.Bosebastian.com

______________________________________________

Look for MY LATEST BOOK:  “Finding Authentic You, 7 Steps to Effective Change” with a Year to CLEAR (C-larity, L-ove, E-nthusiasm A-nd R-elationship-Ready) on my Website in the Webstore. Thanks!

Below is information that I will be sharing for about a month, as not every person on my list reads the blog every day. If you have already read it, just skip over it. Thanks for understanding.

A Year to CLEAR Challenge:
(Please Know: You Can Join Us At Any Point in the Year Challenge.)

The masses search outward for things that qualify them as a person, but I always go inward for that which quantifies me for greatness. At twenty-five I preached on street corners in NYC as an in-the-closet Pentecostal minister. One day I heard a still small voice say, ‘God cannot be contained in a book or a law or even in a religion. Dig deeper, reach further to find me, and you will find your authentic Self.’”

A Year to CLEAR Challenge!

The acronym CLEAR stands for (Compassionate, Loving, Enthusiastic, And Relationship-Ready). The goal of this project is to engulf readers in a weekly study that will transform them by removing blocks, promote self-growth, and give them wings to fly freely into daily life. Each week, by going to BoSebastian.com and choosing the Year to CLEAR Challenge tab, a new challenge or thought to provoke conversation, growth, and group functionality.

My vision is to make Finding Authentic You the book to have in your Kindle or on your computer. The book is a comprehensive look at growth—spiritually, mentally, and physically.

As a yoga teacher and student of the Ayurvedic tradition, I bring to the table understanding of physical challenges, the ability to overcome mental problems with Life & Health Coaching, as well as hypnotherapy, and expertise in meditation and spirituality as a minister.

The combination of all three in one book with an interactive connection to like-minded readers, for one year, is what makes this Year to CLEAR Challenge a must-do for every spiritual seeker.

The One-Year Approach to Change

No one believes he or she can change overnight. But success in change comes from the metaphors of nature. Seasonally, life changes all around us in nature. Finding Authentic You offers a gradual change perspective, looking at the triune aspects of change as in yoga: Body, Mind and Spirit.

Accessing the ability to change and finding yourself actually pursuing change must be a daily search, which I call getting to the “observer mind.”

In this frontal cortex of the brain we find the anatomy of change and the power to counter every negative trigger of the human process. The workings of Hypnosis, NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) are all positive actions to help the mind and body flow to a positive space for change.

Every aspect of FINDING AUTHENTIC YOU fulfills this constant need for diffusing the negative past and dreaming of a fulfilling future.

Step 1: Recognize That Change is Inevitable
Step 2: Release from Resistance to Change
Step 3: Understanding Change and Allow Spirit to Define It
Step 4: A History Lesson—About You
Step 5: Look at Your Past with Compassion
Step 6: Making a Strong Commitment to Change
Step 7: Dream Your Fabulous Future

Slipping on Wet Leaves #powerofnow

Slipping on Wet Leaves #powerofnow

Yesterday I went to feed a friend’s kitties who decided to vacation in Thailand for the holidays. On his porch steps were wet leaves. As I climbed the steps to his front porch, I slipped on the leaves and landed head first into the railing. This was one of those moments I wondered if my mind remained elsewhere while my body walked without my attention. I tend to do that a great deal.

When I cooked everyday, I would have cuts all over my hands, because I just wasn’t into the now enough to watch every intricate movement. Out of boredom and living in my own head—instead of in the now—I ended up with many bruises, bumps, and cuts. Injury remains a clear reminder that you simply don’t stay in the Now.

In yoga we do balancing poses to teach our minds to stay present. One of my favorite poses is called Vriksasana or tree pose. You place one foot firmly on the floor with the leg straight, while the other knee is bent with the foot resting somewhere on the straightened leg. If you become adept at the pose, you can rest your heel all the way at the top of the thigh. Simply stand in that position, breathing gently, 5 or 6 counts in and 5 or 6 counts out, with your hands folded at your heart in prayer position.

In many spiritual cultures, simple breathing exercises will bring you back to the present or the now. Just watch your breath, as it remains the simplest human attribute to control. In biofeedback we learn that, if you take a breath and make the inhales the same count as the exhales, prolonging the breath to 5 of 6 counts, you can reduce your blood pressure 10-15 points in a matter of minutes. You can also help your heart to beat slower with the same breathing exercise.

A couple evenings ago, my heart began to race for no apparent reason. I felt as if I had drunk three cups of strong coffee, when I certainly hadn’t. I took my blood pressure, and it was 155/105 with a pulse of 96. That reading didn’t look promising. The last time my heart did this, I ended up at Vanderbilt in the ER with the doctors believing I was having a heart attack. After $50k of tests, they decided I had heartburn or something ridiculous. But the tests showed no symptoms of heart problems at all.

In my studies of the mind and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, I have found that a trigger in your life can cause your body to react in fear, without you even realizing you have stepped into a land mind. The first action that happens in your body when you get frightened is adrenaline makes your heart race. This happens to get you to safety. It’s a simple bodily reaction to fear.

I had this happen when I went to see the movie “Silver Lining Playbook.” During the scenes when the father beat the young boy, memories of childhood came up so clearly, I actually believed I relived the moment. My heart raced, I began to sweat, and I became incredibly confused. I left my gaggle of confused friends and told them I didn’t feel well. On the way home from the movie, I ended up driving 45 minutes in the wrong direction.

Our bodies often tell us our story before we cognitively know what happened. I realize now that some of the scenes in that movie clearly depicted a scene that was way too familiar for me as a child. It brought back memories that I couldn’t shake physically or mentally. I had to call a dear friend who is a therapist to help me down from the tall tree I climbed to be safe. When we got off of the phone, I was calm enough to drive home, this time in the correct direction.

A Prayer of Thanksgiving

A Prayer of Thanksgiving

In the silence of my heart, I ask for courage to open my soul to love.
I commit to making no laws as to how that love appears.

I wait with hopeful expectation, knowing that the universal law of love wants to give me the kingdom. I know, within the kingdom’s limits, all of my dreams are already fulfilled.

As for family and friends, I trust that each member of my tribe comes closer to the fabric of my life, making my wishes be their wishes, and theirs mine.

I long for health, but not without the courage to walk on a healthy path.

I wish for good fortune, but not without plowing the fields of hard work and education.

I pray for joy, but not without stepping forward into the NOW with the expectation that this moment holds all I need to be happy.

Amen.

In Absentia #Healthcare

In Absentia #Healthcare

Most healthcare models treatment based on a provider being present during diagnosis. An interesting, fairly new model of healthcare arising out of the Internet craze is known as In Absentia Healthcare #inabsentiahealthcare or distance medicine. This occurs when the patient and caregiver are at different locations but still communicate by audio and video, or sometimes without any personal contact. (Wikipedia)

Most practitioners would argue that face-to-face care would be a prelude to the best treatment, but not all people can get up close and personal with the healthcare provider they trust. Even I have taken to doing Skype sessions and sending Hypnosis MP3s over the Internet for people who want my particular services and can’t find hypnosis or spiritual life coaching in their area. Yes, this is not the best form of care I can give, but I’d rather my clients have some care than none.

Also, more and more people consider on-line diagnosis with a Doc in the Box who can provide a quick and easy prescription for them. As long as these kinds of providers are not doling out pain and psychiatric medicine, I believe I may be okay with this model. I know of times in my life when I just needed an antibiotic to get over a sinus infection. Even a trip to the local CVS was out of the question because I confined myself to the bed. At that moment, I would definitely have considered in absentia healthcare. I would have to imagine that, as any Internet business, fraudulent practice happens more and more often. So, perhaps, establishing a personal relationship first and a yearly visit could make in absentia healthcare work. I know that even MyHealthatVanderbilt.com is based on the model I just described. I almost never have to go in for an appointment if the medicine I need prescribed has already been part of a diagnosis.

Truth be known, most of our lives are becoming #inabsentia. We have Facebook replacing one-on-one contact with almost all of our friends. I know that even I fail to get together with friends because I feel as though I am caught up with their lives through so many forms of online conversations and updates. This, too, is in absentia contact. Are we willing to move into a life where personal contact remains completely moot?

I know of some people who even have online relationships #inabsentiarelationships. My nephew has been in relationship with a woman from Australia for almost a year, and he lives in Tucson, Arizona. They Skype two to three times a day and plan for him to move to Australia to get married. What if he gets there, and she doesn’t click with his three-dimensional being? What if she thinks he smells? What if when they finally kiss or have sex, he is repulsed? All of these things are a possibility. I know, because I made that same mistake once.

I met a guy online a few years back. He seemed to be really nice. His pictures were cute. We started out chatting on Yahoo, then began to talk on the phone. Soon, we felt as if we were falling in love. How can you fall in love with someone you have never met? He lived in northern Florida and I in Nashville. Looking back, now, I can’t imagine how this happened. But it did.

He decided he was going to move to Nashville. Even I had the sense to tell him that he needed to find an apartment, and we could try dating once he made the move. He transferred his job here. The moment he got here, we got together. I had never been more repulsed by a person in my life. He smelled, he chewed tobacco, and had lost about 20 pounds since his last picture. He looked emaciated, smelled like garbage, and had a habit I could never get used to. I knew all of this in about ten seconds.

I did wonder how I could release everything that I thought about this person in one minute just from his personal appearance. I felt a bit shallow. But I couldn’t argue with the revolting feeling surging through my veins. When you make a strong choice like dating in absentia you better be careful that your date’s two-dimensional self matches his/her three-dimensional self. Fortunately, Skype makes that more possible. But, I still believe moving somewhere for a person you have never met in person is a lot ludicrous.
