Being Unafraid of Loss

As I had spent a great deal of my professional time helping overweight people while I lived in Nashville, the number one issue for weight gain is holding in what you really feel. When your family members coerce you to do favors and bail them out of trouble, when your boss “depends” on only you to get all the extra work done, and when your partner chooses you to vent his anger, this is not a good time to begin shouldering everyone’s burdens. Trust me, you can live through the loss of a codependent friend or partner, but you can’t undo a heart attack from eating yourself into 150 extra pounds.

So much of my life, I have acted and responded in ways that would prevent loss in my life. If a friend treated me unfairly, I would consider how I responded, instead of being authentic or angry. The bottom line was that I was fearful of impending loss. At this present point in my life, I would rather lose what isn’t good or right and be open for what is right, than hold my tongue and be the perfect and steadfast friend who accepts all bullshit. I think the time of being a dumping ground for crap should be over for all of us.

I feel that moving to a new place with new chances at different choices is a great way for me to exercise this part of my decision-making process. I understand when a person married for twenty years comes to me overweight and upset because she had consumed 100% of her family’s problems—physically and mentally. She would have a much more difficult time of undoing and untying from her relationships than I may have severing ties with people I’ve only known for a couple of months. But sever you may have to do, or build some great boundaries that protect you long enough for you to regain your strength, stop stuffing down your problems with food, and take the power you need to heal yourself.

This power I refer to is a God-given right. It’s not something that you garner or gain. It’s a birthright you simply accept. When you do accept it, your entire world changes. Suddenly, you realize that your old paradigm of thought (I can be rejected, I live in loss, I will be alone) can no longer be the foundation of your life. It has never helped you. Perhaps, the relationships you have invested in your entire life have depleted you, instead of affording the right of a steady return.

Only one Power exists that is worth investing in and that is God. This power is the foundation of all and made purely and growing constantly with love. When you get in this flow, you also prosper and gain right relationship, because spirit sees what you can’t. The gift to you is that you trade in your ego understanding of relationship for the omniscient present of Spirit. When you allow yourself to be led and open to the guidance of this loving power, you will have all the strength you need to create a perfect NOW. This is your New Year’s resolution. This is the magnificence you have been longing for your entire life.

Bo Sebastian's Finding Authentic You!: Standing Strong in the Emptiness

With commitment to change, comes emptiness! Are you ready to stand firm in your emptiness waiting on the Divine Painter to begin the best piece of art ever for the New Year?

Bo Sebastian's Finding Authentic You!: Standing Strong in the Emptiness: “Last year was a difficult one with lots of changes.” I’ve heard this comment almost every end of the year for the last twenty years. My an...

Standing Strong in the Emptiness

“Last year was a difficult one with lots of changes.” I’ve heard this comment almost every end of the year for the last twenty years. My answer to that is: With difficulty and change, usually comes a great deal of growth. Even in the midst of the worst pain, the most horrendous circumstances, or the greatest mental stress, one truth always keeps me standing. That one truth is that “this, too, will pass.” Because everything in life changes, I am certain of that one absolute.

So, as we get ready for a New Year, most of us are ready and very willing to make a list of things that didn’t work out quite right last year. I am also ready to fill a large page with dreams I would like to manifest in this new year. I know one very important aspect that I want to follow more than anything and that is to follow my gut. When I look back at all the problems or the mishaps from last year, something inside of me told me—deep in my belly—that I should have left the situation. Yet, I didn’t go anywhere but deeper into the problem. Perhaps, that’s why I felt as if I was being fed to the wolves. Maybe, I was the one doing the feeding.

I have a friend who has been in a very precarious situation of late. She recently said to me, “You could do a lot better,” referring to her friendship with me. I thought to myself, what could possibly cause someone to have that small amount of self-esteem? What ever that “something” is, today is the time to decide to release it and start again. Every day is a chance to make your life better, to put aside the past and begin again.

I have another friend who has been telling me that he has been waking up with a feeling of emptiness, lately. To that, I shared, “Great! That means you have done your work!” That emptiness he feels is a clearing away of all the stuff that didn’t work. Now on this blank canvas, God and he can create a new and better life.

Getting used to emptiness is a difficult place to be, when you have been used to filling your life to capacity, so that you won’t feel the emptiness. I remember the first time, after many years, I was single. That emptiness felt strange and often embarrassing, as if I was wearing my loss on my shoulders. Then, I got the idea from a Tao teaching that the emptiness or darkness is the holiest of places, because in the vast emptiness is where God Creates!

So, take some time today and tomorrow to create two lists: 1.) jot down all the things in your life that did not work and that you now want to release; and 2.) write a list of things you would like to manifest. Let’s commit to a revolution in this year end, instead of resolutions for the new year!

#Rumi

Rumi was a 13th Century Persian poet, theologian and Sufi mystic. Rumi’s influence transcended national borders and ethnic division, having been translated into many of the world’s languages. Even as of today he has been described as the most popular poet and the best selling poet in the United States. Yet, few of us even know one poem or saying he was known for.

One of his most famous poems describes love as this:

“Both light and shadow are the dance of love.
Love has no cause: it is the astrolabe of God’s secrets.
Lover and loving are inseparable and timeless.”

But one of my favorite attributes of Rumi is his description of spirituality. Even mystics and religious scholars today meditate on his poetry as if it were divinely inspired. In that same poem about love Rumi writes:

“Although I may try to write about love, I am rendered helpless.
My pen breaks and the paper slips away.
At the ineffable place where lover, loving and loved are One.”

In other words, as far back as the 13th century, Rumi wrote of that place where mystics today, especially in New Thought religions are sensing the need to take our rightful place as One—in the Creator, one—in love. We can’t even be “with” love, because the word with implies separateness. We are AS one in God; otherwise, we cannot operate from the one Consciousness that is God the Creator. To be as a create, in the likeness of God, to be a conduit of the great healing power of Love, we must take our place as part of God.

When I completely get this body, mind, and soul (which isn’t often), I feel as if I can fly high, create big, and manifest the world. When I release from that lofty place of oneness, I go back to my separateness and humanness and feel divided from love in all its vast dimensions.

I encourage you to read Rumi and discover the many wonderful poems he shared and the beautiful imagery that you can take to your meditation and think on for hours.

Weight Loss on the Holiday: Digging Myself Out of the Just One More ??? Hole!

When I got to Florida, I was so proud of myself, because I had gotten down to a weight that I had not seen for ten years. Slowly, but surely, the weight began to return with a vengeance. However, I had a swimming pool that I used to do laps and then a yoga practice to stretch everyday while it was warm enough. Now, I’m doing no aerobics and eating the entire holiday table. Honestly, I feel as if I have done better than everyone else around me, taking smaller helpings and eating one instead of ten desserts, but I still have gained ten pounds in four months. What to do?

Well, we all know that New Years is right around the bend. Most of us are secretly whispering to ourselves: “I have just one more week to cheat, then I will get back to my regular diet and to exercising this extra weight off.”

The problem with this theory is that you will need approximately three months to get ten pounds off, especially if this is JUST holiday weight. I guarantee you that you will have the impetus to last a month doing all the right things—eating the correct food, exercising daily for an hour. But most people poop out after that. Suddenly, a new holiday appears where chocolate is the presiding gift. And the same dialogue goes through our minds: “Just a couple of days for Valentine’s day to over do it.” Then, a spring vacation comes. Then two birthdays in a row with cake and more cake.

I really felt as if I had a handle on this problem after all of my trials the last two years in gaining and losing weight. But, apparently, I’m just as human as everyone around me. If my dog smells steak after eating his entire bowl of food, he’s going to eat it no matter how hungry he is. I believe we all have that innate desire.

Too late in the process, I decided that I can say to myself: “Hey, Bo, those desserts will be there tomorrow if you want another one. I know that first one tasted so good. But waiting until tomorrow can be a great way to show yourself that you have control!” I, also, really should have made it to the gym more during the holiday, especially since waiting in traffic and on long lines did anything but give me exercise. Exhaustion, yes, but not exercise.
So, I’m headed to the gym today to do my hour of aerobics and begin a new regimen of eating anything but leftover holiday junk.

Then, my mother yells, “Dinner,” at 10 p.m. She served my favorite, PASTA!

Walking One Step Closer to What?

Have you ever considered how many steps you walk in a day, a week, or a year… a lifetime? Were you walking toward something, taking a leisurely stroll, or simply dutifully walking where you should to get a chore done? At any rate, we will walk on an average 216,262,500 steps in a lifetime of eight years old. This is equivalent to walking 5 times around the earth at the Equator. Who sits around thinking about this kind of stuff and why? Websites like Fun Trivia and Answers have made a mint, I’m sure, answering any of these frivolous questions for the person who has nothing else to do but think of facts.

My sister and I watched television together last night. A commercial came on about Ancestry.com. Both of us, almost simultaneously said, “I couldn’t give a shit about that!” Then we laughed. We tend to say the same things a great deal while watching television. Also, almost every time we sit down to watch television, something airs that we just talked about. We will be talking about a specific seasoning, for instance, that we never use. Then, someone on the news says, “A recent discovery about turmeric!” We look at each other and just laugh. This happens almost every day. It’s as if someone out there is listening or maybe even walking with me most of the day.

The bible says that the angels in heaven watch over humans. Some scriptures say that the angels even intercede on our behalf. One has to wonder just how many angels it would take to have one guardian angel over every person on the earth. Should I look that up on Angels.com? Yes, there is a site just about angels—in fact, about 2000 sites about angels.
This blog feels like a Seinfeld episode. It’s simply about nothing. Walking to nowhere, watching television and never waking up from the dream. Are we simply just on this earth to live, work, make babies, and then die? Humans have got to have a greater purpose. If so, what might that purpose be? When I walk one step closer, what exactly is my goal?

If you are a spiritual seeker, which most of you are, then our goal is a spiritual one. The human body has a beginning and an ending. The spirit, however, lives on, because it’s pure energy. Even physics says you can’t destroy energy. So, the human body and its existence must be a vehicle for our spiritual growth.

If you believed that we were on a journey that was about learning, the synchronistic events in our lives, then, would have some meaning. In fact, every step on this journey would be moving a little closer to understanding. Right? The only thing you would have to do is Wake Up! to this moment to begin to stop wasting your steps on a useless journey to nowhere.

Bo Sebastian's Finding Authentic You!: The Empty Love Bucket #lovebucket

Does anyone feel depleted energetically today after the holidays? If so, read on..

The Empty Love Bucket #lovebucket

Yesterday, I spoke with a minister friend who shared a concept I had never heard of. In the 1960s, Dr. Donald O. Clifton (1924-2003) first created the "Dipper and Bucket" story, which depicted our ability and need to have love in our hearts as an invisible bucket. Dr. Clifton also co-authored, with his grandson, Tom Rath, the #1 New York Times bestseller, How Full Is Your Bucket? Positive Strategies for Work and Life (Gallup Press).

Our hearts are like a bucket. When the bucket is full we experience confidence, security, patience, and we are friendly. Our thoughts and energy are positive, and we have much love to give. But if the bucket is empty—containing few, if any, positive thoughts, then we can easily become sad, negative, depressed and insecure. Most importantly, though, our energy level sags when the bucket is near empty. When this happens, we can become very reactive to any small situation.

I reach into this bucket today and find that the well is full from a day of amazing love on Christmas. My family and I spent most of the day together, which is something I hadn’t felt in many years. We had no contention, no drama, and no one was anything but thankful. We even had a few tearful moments of joy about being together for the first time in a long while.

I’d imagine that many people out in the world have empty love buckets on this day for varying reasons. You could have had to spend the day by yourself, when you wanted to be with your family. You could have been stuck in an airport. You could have had an angry family that sucked out your energy. Any of these reasons could have brought you to a place today where you are completely depleted of energy and your bucket needs filling.

The concept and metaphors show us that Bucket Filling, Bucket Dipping, and the us of Your Bucket Lid are a few of the ways to make sure your bucket gets filled up again.

Bucket Filling happens in a converse way than you would imagine. Dr. Clifton suggests that the way to fill your bucket is to give someone else a smile, to do charity work, or to get out of yourself and be a conduit of God’s loving grace. When we do acts of selflessness, immediately our imaginary heart reservoir begins to fill with love.

Bucket Dipping is when we make fun of someone or randomly use our energy to hurt people, even unintentionally. This takes away energy. So, no amount of good can keep you from being depleted, if you spend half of your day being a dipper!

My favorite concept is Using Your Bucket Lid. This means that when your bucket is full, you should protect the love that you embody by putting a cap on your heart. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should not give love. The cap is more like having “good boundaries,” so you don’t have energy suckers pulling and tugging at your good energy.

Merry Christmas, my dear friends and readers. I am knowing that this day and holiday season will be peaceful and joyous.

Christmas Blessings in Disguise

One thing I don’t consider myself is a Diva! (Even though others may… lol) Last night, however, I had a human moment that sent my body and mind into a whirlwind experience.

The back-story began with an amazingly spiritual day, full of life and light. My entire day before Christmas couldn’t have been more blessed. But suddenly, I get a text from a guy whom I was dating for a couple months and, without provocation or even a text, simply abandoned the relationship. I still have no idea why. But he sends this sweet message about merry Christmas, and I went deep into my humanness and into some anger, as well.

As I may have shared, I have been rehearsing for a beautiful candlelit Christmas Musical Celebration at church. The show was intricate from top to bottom with eight-part harmonies and nine difficult songs to learn in a period of three weeks. I had only been to four rehearsals, because I was sick for one.

By the time we got to dress rehearsal, one of my trios had only been rehearsed three times. I really was having trouble with the rhythm because there was no music to learn from, just a recording. I read music, so I heavily rely on my eyesight to remember the way music looks in my mind, when I sing it.

Prior to the night of the show, I had finally gotten the rhythm correctly, even though I was counting on my musicality to get it right. Suddenly, Christmas Eve, I couldn’t find the beat to save my life. We practiced only two songs before the show as a sound check. One of them was the trio. During that last rehearsal, every time I was to come in for my part, I missed the cue. Suddenly, I had a PTSD moment and a mental meltdown, sat down on the stage and refused to sing the rest of the song. My face was red hot and I could barely breath.

I found myself in a human moment that didn’t even resemble who I am as an adult or a professional. It befuddled me and caught me off guard. Even worse, the moment was in front of everyone I respected.

After I pulled myself together, I apologized, of course, and had to shake the feeling and learn the part before the service in 40 minutes. Fortunately, for me, I have an amazing minister and friends who believe in the power of positive prayer and, more importantly, believe in me. After our prayer together, I stayed in my truth about myself and about the show. I believed—as hard as it was to not retreat into the fear—that this was God’s show and I was simply channeling it through me. I gave my burden to God in that moment, and that became my gift.

The entire event that evening was such a grand blessing and everything turned out beautifully. Even though there were moments in the show when the sound blipped and feedback happened, I wasn’t, in the least, deterred from our truth.

As one of my cast friends said, “Behind every breakdown, there usually stands one thing—embarrassment!” He absolutely was correct. I hated looking like a fool in front of my peers and especially in front of people who respected me for being a music minister, as well.
The gift for me was that great feeling of having my humanness out there and still having all the love and respect I thought I would have lost in that moment. As always, our gifts come in unexpected ways, through challenges, mostly. As we let ourselves be human, with all of our faults, we can see through the lens of spirituality that life holds for us a great opportunity to always retreat from living completely in our ego minds and finding that beautiful balance—with Spirit.

The happiest of holidays and Merry Christmas!

Bo Sebastian's Finding Authentic You!: The Christ In You: Your Christmas Gift from God

This message is meant for spiritual adults 18 or over... It's Rate R-S!

The Christ In You: Your Christmas Gift from God

So many people think that the Master Jesus’ last name is Christ. In the time of Jesus, last names were nonexistent. In fact, the name of the town Jesus lived in was connected to his first name; hence, Jesus of Nazareth. The word Christ was given Jesus as a title. The Greek word Christos means the anointed one or the messiah.

“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus,” is Paul’s advice in Philippians. So, Paul suggests that we look to Jesus for the role of God in his life and mimic or mirror that anointing. When we think of that kingdom of God in Christ living and breathing within us, we either consider it blasphemy or we think we are not ready or good enough to have such power. But what happens when we open our lives and minds to this anointing? Our entire world changes. We reach from our small ego thinking to a land where only responsible spiritual warriors exist.

I had an amazing meditation this morning. I began with my 5 a.m. meditation before I took out my dog. But when I got back into my home, I felt the need to press forward into yet another meditation. I knew, however, this one would be very telling, because my heart wasn’t just meditating to appease or nurture my soul as in my daily practice. I was led to this meditation; which, for me, means that Spirit is ready to reveal something powerful.
When I sat quietly, I asked God, my spirit guides, myself, (whatever It is that you want to call your higher power): What is it that I need to learn here?

When I opened my heart and mind to understanding, divine wisdom began to pour through my body. I felt my arms actually levitating without my mind attached. This was a bizarre feeling, but I let it happen to see where Spirit would lead. Of course, the physical sensation had little to do with the lesson I learned.

A guide came to me—she called herself Evelyn. But, I sensed I knew her from another part of my life. Indeed, she shared that she had been my caring neighbor, Mary, who took care of me after my mother left my father, when I was a child. Evelyn took me on a journey, similar to the Christmas Story with Ebenezer Scrooge. However, I was not taken to any old haunts to undo past injustices. I was taken to a new land. In this new place, completely untouched by any humanness, I finally saw a glimpse of the power of the Christ in me! The feeling was amazing. I felt much like a sojourner in a new world where I was completely in charge of an entire world—my world—God’s world.

With this vision, I begin to understand the metaphor, now, of the birth of Christ IN me. We are all meant to do works greater than Jesus. (John 14:12) If we are to step out into the prophecy of Jesus, then, we must risk all that we have believed about ourselves and God. In so doing, we meet our destiny—our own anointing—our own Christ. Bo Sebastian's Finding Authentic You!: Twas the Day Before the Night Before Christmas…

Twas the Day Before the Night Before Christmas…

…And all through the apartment, every piece of furniture was moved to make room for the tree, gifts, cards, special cookies, and food prepared about three days in advance. If my mother would have her wish, she would have already had the family dinner and have cleaned up. She starts making lists for Christmas dinner on October 1st. I have to gently tell her that green beans won’t last ten days in the refrigerator without wilting and turning brown. “Oh,” she says. Then, the next day, “Could you go to the store for me? I need green beans.” If you looked up anxious in the dictionary, I know my mother’s picture would be there, right by the definition.

I think of that fun kind of childish, anxious behavior we have when no one is looking, and we shake the gift boxes under the tree. Or when we expect someone special to arrive at a celebration. I love those feelings, but I have learned to tamp down my own excitement as an adult, and sometimes, I take away the passion and the fun from the event, simply by being old enough to know that “with expectation often comes disappointment.”

I suppose this is why adults get more excited for the children at Christmas. We see in their eyes what we once coveted. We marvel at their passion. We even take loads of videos and pictures because we know, eventually, that this excitement will wane, even for the youth.

Yesterday evening, I spent four hours rehearsing for a Christmas Eve musical celebration. This was the ensemble’s first time singing the songs with a five-piece band. Every song was a virtual disaster the initial time through. Nothing went according to expectation. All of the sound was different, because we used microphones and monitors to hear each other, now, rather than singing around a grand piano with just one instrument. However, about three hours into the rehearsal, the musicians began to hear each other and get excited about the music we made—together. For a while, individual egos were thinking about words, parts, and staging. But when the egos began to dissolve into the unity of the whole, beauty arose like a phoenix.

Singers who have been holding back or had been uncomfortable with a part, suddenly, took to the spotlight and shined. It was a wonderful sight. What began with clunking out notes to a cacophony of sounds for each part had now become an orchestra of harmony and unity.

Any holiday season mirrors what we hope all people would be like throughout the entire year. For just a few days, most people around the world share Hope, Joy, Love, Giving, and Togetherness. In so doing, I believe, we set the stage for a great metaphor for everyone to see in our daily lives. So, as we gather to celebrate together, let us all put aside our differences, our pettiness, and especially our egos, and experience what I felt last night watching individual egos become one powerful voice!
