Bring It On! #laughter

All of my sisters—I have four—love making their brother burst out laughing. Most of our time together at family gatherings is reliving a childhood game we used to play called “Laugh Time.” One player starts the show by getting up in front of all of the other players and tries to make them laugh. Usually people resort to props and wigs and crazy voices and antics, but someone ultimately laughs. If you were the first person to laugh, you would then have to get up and make another player laugh. No one actually would win the game. It just kept going on until everyone tired of laughing, which usually was a long time. The neighbors liked our made-up game so much that they would beg to be invited.

This year, my youngest sister, in an effort to start something funny, decided to have a Christmas tree competition. She even had her kids texting me messages with pictures of them buying the tree and putting it up. As I shared my initial pictures of my tree with her, she said to me, “Bring it on!” We just started laughing, because we know we really don’t care about whose tree is better, but we want the added excitement of having a competition.

Yesterday, another sister and I dressed up as private detectives and without knocking on the door, started taking pictures of youngest sisters tree through the outside windows as she decorated. We had a small pad of paper and pen, acting like we were professional spies. Of course, we all had a great laugh, as we continued our charade with the kids, too, who think this is a real challenge. So, they begin to try to erase our pictures and stop us from taking notes. Lori’s youngest secretly sidled up to her during all of this and said, “Mommy, what do we win after all this?”
I share this story, because during much of our life my family has been separated from each other. We lived on opposite sides of the country. So on the rare times when we would get together, a couple of instigators would always start major fights. So, our memories of being together haven’t been all the great.

However, since I have been living next to all three of my sisters and my mother, none of us have had even one small skirmish. We just continue to laugh and eat and laugh some more. In fact, we even make plans laugh, as we used to when we were children. We have a game night scheduled for the family every other Saturday night. We all make great food and gather together with the sole purpose to laugh for about 3-4 hours, playing crazy games. There is never a dry eye in the house—and I’m talking crying from laughing so hard. Usually, one of us has to run to the bathroom because we laugh so hard that our bladders are affected.

Laughing is one wonderful gift from God that can enhance your life. Make plans to laugh everyday. Find things and people that cause you to smile and chortle and simply lose your poise. Go to movies that are funny. Be around someone who consistently makes you laugh. And simply let go! You will be a better person for it. In fact, laughing is even been proven to heal the physical body. No one loses when you all laugh together.
