Think “Once Upon a Time” #psychology #yourstory

Everything in our human life has a beginning, middle, and end. All relationships, work, friendships, and even family ties have this life cycle. We are on earth. Even though our spirits are timeless and indestructible, most of what we have on earth is completely ephemeral. This is important to remember to maintain reality and happiness. For instance, if you go into a new relationship knowing that this, too, will have an ending—either someone will go away or one of you will pass from this earth—then you will tend to that relationship with care and dignity, every day, every minute, every second!

In the book, What Happy People Know, Dr. Dan Baker tells a story of a woman who had been diagnosed with cancer; went through all of the treatment; got well, only to get find that the cancer had spread again all over her body. When asked her about what she believed happiness was in retrospect to her life, she replied (paraphrased): Everything in life dies. The key to finding happiness is to enjoy the present moment more than you enjoy the memory of the past.

When I read that story, my life changed. When I remember that relationships with everything in life are ephemeral, I take the time to honor every moment with poise. When I don’t remember that fact, I often slip into a place of thinking that life will turn out as it had in the past. No one gains when you live life in your old story. Plus, you don’t have the opportunity to create a new and wonderful story with the presence of Spirit guiding and leading you.

A teacher of mine told me a secret he uses to help him stay in the moment. To delineate the past from the future, when recapitulating something from the past, he says to himself, silently, “Once upon a time.” In other words, he tells himself that this part of his life, his past, is just a story, a tale with a beginning, middle, and perhaps, an ending. When he’s finished telling the story, he thinks again, this is the end of that story.
