The question ministers get asked the most is: How do you make sense of bad things that happen, like the recent mess in Baltimore—the senseless death of man, the destruction, and the looting? To explain if God is in control of all negativity in the universe is to ask the question: Do you believe that God is All in All?
If a minister answers yes, then the immediacy is to blame his/her belief in God for all the bad in the world, which is simply crazy. If belief had something to do with any cataclysmic outcome on the earth, such as tsunamis, hurricanes, and tornadoes, then someone’s disbelief would be just as responsible as someone’s belief.
Is it God’s will that these things happen? Well, if Source created the earth, then the will of God is in everything that happens on the earth, in the earth, and to you and I. If I believe in a God or Spirit that is All in All, then how can I digest that this same God causes or allows world disasters?
This prayer, by Dr. Kenn Gordon, says it brilliantly: “Anything that appears out of order on this earth—distressing or disturbing is a natural, unfolding evolution of Divine balance, playing out in perfection. Life delivers peace and justice in every incident and in every case without qualm, error, or mistake. Spirit is the purveyor of justice. The end result of all is an awakening in each and everyone of us to equality, compassion, and the loving connection we share.”
In other words, balance, compassion, equality, and love are Spirit’s perfect goals in all of life. If you believe that an abundance of deer in the forest must be taken care of by nature (perhaps, the death of some by hunger), hunting, and other wildlife eating the deer to create balance again in the forest, then you must also consider that there is Divine Balance expressing in every incidence on the earth, making it necessary for the world to continue on its course toward enlightenment.
Also, I believe that all spirits are indestructible. If you don’t believe that our spirits live on after this lifetime on earth, then you may be inconsolable when it comes to death, especially senseless death. But if your heart is open to reincarnation, then you may consider this: Each spirit has a divine purpose on earth. Some spirits simply came as a sacrifice to help others evolve in this lifetime. (If you are Christian, it isn’t hard to go one step further than Jesus’ sacrificial death to believe that other spirits may have come to earth with exactly the same purpose.)
Lastly, making sense of our lives, the existence of the earth’s people, and the existence of God, simply is our life’s destiny to consider. All of this human existence—negative or positive power in the world—from the beauty of an ocean wave in the summer to the shark, in that same ocean, that kills a human life, must make sense somewhere in the universe. Is it my objective in life to find the balance? Or should I simply trust that a higher consciousness already has everything in divine order?
I choose Divine Order! I am a happier person for it.
