Wichita Lineman—Memory and Music

Wichita Lineman—Memory and Music

I can still hear Glenn Campbell sing: “I am a lineman for the county. And I drive the main road…” I used to sing the song over and over again. But, I never knew Wichita or what a lineman did. I remember singing the words as I heard them from a child’s perspective, “And the witch I call Lineman, is still on the line!”

I’m amazed at how much the brain can remember when a tune is attached. An entire learning series for the alphabet and phonetics exists called ‘’Sing and Spell.” I had a friend who was almost illiterate at 18, but loved to sing. With “Sing and Spell, he got his high school diploma. From there, he went on to get a degree in HVAC. Now he is a manager of a skyscraper in NYC.

Marty was a great example of the brain’s power to go forward even when every neural pathway hadn’t been nurtured or activated during the normal growth period. He still has a bit of a stutter and is a bit disheveled, but has been married twice and has three grown children and owns a house in NYC, which is a huge statement to his mental acumen.

I met Marty and his brother at church start-up in Midtown NYC in the 1980s. Both guys were in their late teens, dirty, unkempt, and were barely able to form complete sentences. I don’t know how two Jewish guys from Queens ended up at a start-up church in Manhattan, but there they were, hands in the air and singing praise and worship songs. I remember thinking, Oh my goodness, what kind of parents did they have? I do remember that Marty ended up happy and his brother ended up in jail, then a mental institution. The difference between them was that Marty asked me for help. He said that God had told him to let me lead him and to listen to everything I said.

I didn’t want that kind of responsibility for anyone at that time in my life, but I did tell him that I would try to be there for him. He turned out to be one of my best friends as the years went by.

He had two older siblings who were very successful, one a doctor and one a lawyer. What exactly happened to the parenting after the first two children, I will never know.

I tell you all this because if you are using your parents as a tool not to walk forward into your perfectly wonderful life, you are making a big mistake. Your parents may have been stumbling blocks, but they were put there to help you be strong and overcome. You have to make choices not to acquiesce to the noise in your mind about their opinion of you.

If they have died, do some spiritual work with a healer to help you resolve the problem. If they haven’t died, then face the problem and work it out, for yourself, not for them. If you have to release them from your life, then so be it. But no one deserves to be held back by a parent or a guardian.

I understand this from the depths of my soul. I should have turned out like Marty or his brother. I had no guidance or guardian telling me what I should and shouldn’t do. Fortunately, I had a neighbor who took me under her wing and made sure I had what I needed to survive in a rough world. I thank her to this day for my life. She helped define me and create a life worth living.

Now I am “A Lineman for the Spirit.” I am, by definition, one who lays down railroad tracks, telephone or electrical line, or one who is on the front line of a football team. Any one of those definitions is a great metaphor for our path here on earth. If you want to be a lineman for spirit, you must step forward and “drive the main road,” as the song says.

Go to Week 2 of the “Year to CLEAR Challenge”

_______________________________________

Below is information that I will be sharing for about a month, as not every person on my list reads the blog every day. If you have already read it, just skip over it. Thanks for understanding.

A Year to CLEAR Challenge:
(Please Know: You Can Join Us At Any Point in the Year Challenge.)

The masses search outward for things that qualify them as a person, but I always go inward for that which quantifies me for greatness. At twenty-five I preached on street corners in NYC as an in-the-closet Pentecostal minister. One day I heard a still small voice say, ‘God cannot be contained in a book or a law or even in a religion. Dig deeper, reach further to find me, and you will find your authentic Self.’”

A Year to CLEAR Challenge!

The acronym CLEAR stands for (Compassionate, Loving, Enthusiastic, And Relationship-Ready). The goal of this project is to engulf readers in a weekly study that will transform them by removing blocks, promote self-growth, and give them wings to fly freely into daily life. Each week, by going to BoSebastian.com and choosing the Year to CLEAR Challenge tab, a new challenge or thought to provoke conversation, growth, and group functionality.

My vision is to make Finding Authentic You the book to have in your Kindle or on your computer. The book is a comprehensive look at growth—spiritually, mentally, and physically.

As a yoga teacher and student of the Ayurvedic tradition, I bring to the table understanding of physical challenges, the ability to overcome mental problems with Life & Health Coaching, as well as hypnotherapy, and expertise in meditation and spirituality as a minister.

The combination of all three in one book with an interactive connection to like-minded readers, for one year, is what makes this Year to CLEAR Challenge a must-do for every spiritual seeker.

The One-Year Approach to Change

No one believes he or she can change overnight. But success in change comes from the metaphors of nature. Seasonally, life changes all around us in nature. Finding Authentic You offers a gradual change perspective, looking at the triune aspects of change as in yoga: Body, Mind and Spirit.

Accessing the ability to change and finding yourself actually pursuing change must be a daily search, which I call getting to the “observer mind.”

In this frontal cortex of the brain we find the anatomy of change and the power to counter every negative trigger of the human process. The workings of Hypnosis, NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) are all positive actions to help the mind and body flow to a positive space for change.

Every aspect of FINDING AUTHENTIC YOU fulfills this constant need for diffusing the negative past and dreaming of a fulfilling future.

Step 1: Recognize That Change is Inevitable
Step 2: Release from Resistance to Change
Step 3: Understanding Change and Allow Spirit to Define It
Step 4: A History Lesson—About You
Step 5: Look at Your Past with Compassion
Step 6: Making a Strong Commitment to Change
Step 7: Dream Your Fabulous Future
