Like Goats Balancing on Cliffs - Transliminality

Like Goats Balancing on Cliffs - Transliminality

I went to a Second Monday Spiritual Friends Network meeting today. The discussion was on a new psychological study called Transliminality. The word, from its roots, literally means “going beyond the threshold.”

This concept was introduced by Michael Thalbourne, an Australian parapsychologist. It suggests that people who are hypersensitive to light, imagery, ideation, sound, taste, and touch also have a high degree of propensity to experience mysticism and paranormal activity.

This subject clearly spiked my keen interest. I have often spoke in this blog about a book called, “Too Loud, Too Bright, Too Fast, Too Tight: What to Do If You Are Sensory Defensive in an Overstimulating World” by Sharon Heller (Dec. 2, 2003). Ms. Heller’s book speaks of the autistic wave of psychology that affects the sensory system. She believes that some adults fall on the curve of autism and have a condition called “sensory defensiveness.” After reading the book, I was absolutely sure most of my depression and anxiety behavior had stemmed from this problem.

When I am around loud sounds for too long, I shut down completely. Just before a rain, I get achy and sometimes have onset migraines. Bright lights are harsh. A foul taste will last for hours. An off-pitch singer makes me want to cringe. On the positive side, I am almost never off-pitch. I can taste food and tell you how it was prepared and with what spices. I can predict moisture without a divining rod. And I have become a very sensitive and compassionate person, as a result.

This new study may also indicate why some people have such a clear understanding of spirituality and why it isn’t hard for some to hear the voice of God, see visions, and feel when something negative is looming.

Our speaker Laura Rosser Kreiselmaier used a reference to a poem that helped her understand her own intricate perceptions. The poem spoke of the difference sheep and goats. Goats love to stand apart and above and balance on cliffs, while sheep are more likely to hang out together and on low lands.

Are you the type of person who has been wondering all of his/her life about why you are so sensitive and feel separate? If you are, this recent study of parapsychology may hold the answers you have been looking for.

I have been struggling my entire life to stop the constant challenge of my proprioceptors firing like a machine gun from my brain. Now, I understand the nature and functionality of my humanness and can be more compassionate to these sensitive areas of my life. Without them, I would not have the amount of innate understanding about spirituality and helping others through trauma and addictions. What was considered an affliction, has now become a gift!
