We do not have to wonder too far to see what Giving feels like without Love, as humanity has made it a mandate to give before we feel like giving on Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and birthdays. I know we all have had to bring a gift somewhere with no love attached as proper protocol. This feels empty and senseless, in my estimation.
This year, I was spending the Valentine’s holiday with a friend from Dublin. We had ten wonderful days together. Neither of us even thought of Valentine’s day until the day before, when we were in the grocery store and bombarded with bright red hearts-a-plenty. Then, I felt the obligation to give a gift.
The morning before the holiday, as I went about my day, ignoring the obligatory feeling. I decided that if love does not move me to buy a gift, then I simply would not give one. Our friendship had always been about being the most authentic as we could be. I did feel as if I wanted to buy a card that expressed my thankfulness for his wonderful friendship. I found the perfect card and felt satisfied with just that.
Later that day, our conversations became deeper about his impending departure. I discovered a real need in my heart to buy him something that would allow me to go home with him, across the Atlantic Ocean, in a spiritual and tangible way. I had no idea what to get him, but I knew that I would find a time to get the perfect gift before he left.
As it turned out, he had a healing session the afternoon that afternoon. As I was the designated driver, I had an hour to use. In those moments, I felt love lead me to a store to shop for that one special gift.
This is love in action. This is love leading you to the expression of the heart. If you do not feel this kind of love, why even bother with the gift buying? This is my credo.
Even at Christmas, my family has dismissed the obligatory giving and taken to having a grab-bag, which has no love intention at all. It is a simple way of showing that giving within the family is something we do to show our gratefulness and love. If we feel inclined to buy the children (or anyone) something, we often do. Very few people can resist the face of a child when he or she is opening a gift.
So, today is about separating yourself from the obligation of giving to anything or anyone. If you do not feel it, release from it. You will also find yourself letting go of the resentment attached to giving without love, which feels like paying bills, anyway. Stay authentic to your Truth. You will never go wrong with this premise in life.
