Nerviosa: Benefits of Coffee #nervedisorders #benefitsofcoffee #anxeity #SpiritualLiving

As I spilled my cup of copy on my desk this morning, soaking bills, and allowing enough liquid to get close enough to my computer for me to jolt to my feet and rush for a cloth to absorb all the mess, I realized how much I rely on that one cup of coffee to jump start my day. For many years I simply could not drink coffee. It made my stomach feel acidic and gave me the kind of nervous energy that would make one run around the block. But, as I have gotten older, I have grown to not only enjoy those one or two cups, but depend on them to wake me up in the morning.

Recent studies have shown that a cup of coffee a day is very beneficial for the body. In “Medical News Today,” research shows that drinking 3-5 cups of coffee a day will help prevent type II Diabetes, lower the risk of liver disease, reduce the risk of getting Parkinson’s disease, and is associated with heart health. That research, alone, was enough to affirm that my one or two cups a day was not a bad thing. In fact, I even found that mid-day, when I might desire a nap, a hearty cup of coffee would be a better choice to keep me and up and, later, get a better night’s sleep. So, I’m apt to opt for the coffee.

Though, the benefits far outweigh the negativity of coffee, I sit here with my legs and feet jumping about, nervously looking forward to that 45 minutes at the gym doing cardio to take me back to homeostasis. Yes, it does make me a little jumpy, specifically, if I want to spend another hour sitting behind my computer writing. If one cup of coffee makes me this jumpy, imagine would five cups of coffee, or one super huge cup of Starbucks would do to the heart and nervous system of anyone. Are we helping our body or manipulating it with chemicals?

I used to have yoga clients try to meditate after drinking their daily dose of coffee. I would advise: “You might want to wait until after yoga to do your coffee. Or, at the very least, before class, just drink enough coffee not to get a headache from withdrawal. After class, then drink the remainder of your daily dose. Still, 5 out of 30 students would be squirming about on the floor during the final resting pose, Shavasana.

I am not saying that we should all stop using caffeine and manipulating our hearts and body with coffee. What I am saying, though, is that we should be aware of how much coffee affects us and use it accordingly.

If you are jumping out of your skin after the first cup, do not keep drinking three more cups to finish the pot. If you cannot get your head off of the kitchen table, by all means, drink a second and third cup. I would not want you to get in a car half-asleep. I am just concerned about the already nervous- and anxiety-diagnosed people who make their conditions even worse by the overuse of caffeine in coffee and other beverages like cola drinks, some tea, ice tea, and those canned drinks that are designed specifically to give you a huge jolt of energy.

We need awakened drivers, but we do not need rage-filled drivers, anxiously beeping their horns at everyone in their way. As in everything in life, we must find balance. To find balance we have to look inside and get quiet enough, know ourselves enough, and listen to our bodies enough to be the responsible adults that watch over these fragile vessels called bodies. To do this, we should not resist the urge to get quiet by drinking too much coffee.
Instead, let us allow ourselves the time in the morning to be quiet and meditate, before jump-starting the day. This may be a good way to begin to listen to your own body and discover just how much of this magic potion you need.
