Gender Elasticity #transgender #AuthenticAcceptanceofOthers #Thailand #SOM #SpiritualLiving

One of my best friends decided to change his life, about the same time I decided to move to Florida. He moved to Thailand and ended up getting married soon after. Talking on Skype early in the morning has become commonplace for us, catching up on life, as we used to when we would rollerblade together in Nashville, almost daily.

I shared with how I have noticed, since I moved to Southern Florida, how accepting the majority of the people are here about gays. In fact, there is an entire town, Wilton Manors, that has more gay people per capita than anywhere in the United States. The gays have literally created an entire town and even have a modicum of control over the governing law of the community. Hence, living down here has been quite the change compared to Nashville.

If I want to walk in the mall arm in arm with my boyfriend, no one even cares or blinks. I get the overwhelming feeling of acceptance, more than I had ever experienced, even in NYC twenty years ago.

As I shared this story with my friend from Thailand, I asked the pertinent question: “How accepting are the Taiwanese about gays?”

He answered surprisingly, “The Thai’s are the most gender elastic people I’ve ever known. In fact, a large portion of the teenagers are transgender.”

As I researched and made more inquiries, I discovered that gender reassignment surgery in the U.S. is about 8OK, while in Thailand it is 30K. This vast contrast in the cost of surgery is just about the same for any medical procedure. This makes Thailand a leader MEDICAL TOURISM.

The country has some of the best doctors for gender reassignment, because these doctors do so many surgeries per year. But, it hasn’t been until the recent millennials that the children of the Thai’s have become transparent and elastic with their gender, as well.

It seems that, dependent on the culture, we may all be acting a little less like our specific gender, and a little more like our opposite gender. This would give all of us opportunities to be more authentic to our emotions. Let’s face it, many cultures have assigned specific emotions for each gender. When we cross these boundaries, someone is bound to let us know. “Ah, you’re acting just like a girl” or “Isn’t she the Tomboy?”

If we were more a gender elastic community, less of us would be dealing with anxiety and more of us would have healthy relationship. Less people would be searching in the dark for sexual satisfaction, and more people would be living OUTLOUD. This would lead all of us to less judgment, in general.
I would love this kind of world.

FEATURED BOOK OF THE WEEK: Learning Alone.
This book is the story about an anxiously attached male who grows up in a straight world, but his true desire is to express as a gay man. Most of his struggle is with religion. But the main protagonist in this true story is Anxious Attachment—his need to assign self-acceptance to his ability to have a healthy relationship. This is a great read for anyone struggling with anxious attachment in relationship. You can find it in paperback or on Kindle here:
