Dragonfly

Dragonfly

Not many insects, birds or animals are able to see and fly in all six directions. The agile and beautiful dragonfly is able to do it all. Plus, its opal-like body seems to shimmer as it flies, making it look iridescent. The dragonfly effortlessly flies, flapping its wings only 40 times a minutes compared to most insects, which flap at 600-1000 times. Dragonfly is able to achieve this power because each flap of the dragonfly’s wings is 20 times stronger than insects and other birds.

The dragonfly lives most of its life unable to fly in the nymph or larva stage. It flies for only a fraction of its life, no more than a few months.

Yesterday, three dragonflies crossed my path—two while I was in my driveway admiring the flowers and pond and one landed directly on my windshield as I was driving. Of course, I am a believer that nature is constantly sharing with us its magical message. As I want to grow more spiritually every day, I opened my heart and mind to the symbolism of nature’s friend.

The metaphor of dragonfly is a beautiful one. In most cultures dragonfly symbolizes the kind of change that has its source in emotional and mental maturity. It represents the deeper meaning of life. Perhaps, as dragonfly passed me three separate times yesterday, it was saying, “Dig even deeper, Bo—gaze into the magnifying glass of life and see a richer purpose and reason for your life!”

Dragonfly is generally associated with being around water. Its ability to glide quickly across water reminds us to look beyond the surface of every situation.

Its ability to see in every direction symbolizes power and omniscience—something that comes with spiritual maturity. When we are able to be the observer of our own humanity, we rise above the two-dimensional life that only human eyes looking forward can visualize. When we grow spiritually, we expand our vision to multi-faceted, multi-dimensional life, which gives us a greater, deeper vision of all that is in our physical and mental path and beyond.

Dragonfly can fly at 45 miles per hour. It can hover in one place, move up and down, side to side, and from front to back. It does all this with the elegance of a dancer. Symbolically, this could mean that the more spiritually evolved we become, the gentler our steps appear. When you watch a ballet dancer glide across the floor, the objective is to see simplicity and ease when she dances; though it may have taken years of strengthening her feet and leg, and many falls to develop her poise.

Dragonfly teaches us that what takes most people years, can take a spiritually led person half the time. This is because with divine inspiration, it is as if time has no bearing on the outcome. What is to happen through us—as God lives and breathes as us—now happens with the inspiration of spirit and with the power of angels.

Dragonfly’s magical iridescent properties makes it appear different in any direction you view it. This symbolizes our ability to become all things to all people, if need be. Dragonfly’s character to change identity with each glance gives us the reality that our humanity is just an opalescent shell. Our appearance can change depending on who is watching you and from what point of view you are being watched.

Lastly, since the dragonfly lives most of its life as a nymph or larva and spends just a few months of its life flying, we see that our mature spirit may not have as much time as we imagined on this earth. So, we must accomplish our purpose and intention before our time on earth vanishes. With this knowledge, we become completely uninhibited, which makes us fearless in the face of human struggle.

This last attribute of the dragonfly means the most, as it signifies to live each moment as it appears. The message of most sages in this time definitely is to live in the Now. And so it is!
