Many stories have come and gone about Caitlyn Jenner, but the strangest of all of them is her card-carrying right to be a Republican and the media around that issue. In fact, lately, it seems that what has come out of the Republican party, more than anything these past months, is more extremism and fundamentalism, mixed with a sprinkling of “I better support the Right Wing Christian Faith or I’ll lose this race, but if I don’t get some of the gays’ votes, I’ll lose too,” than the foundational grit one would need to win a presidency.

Just the fact that 17 GOPs have shown up for the race, including Donald Trump, just makes my jaw drop in anticipation for the first big debate. What will they talk about? Caitlyn Jenner, gay marriage, abortion, or what really matters with finance and foreign policy? Is some computer geek measuring what Americans really want and believe in? With this information, will we see more and more extreme candidates fighting for that popular vote? 

If so, you’re going to see Right Wing Whatevers saying it’s not right to marry if you’re gay, but in some cases, it may be okay to change your gender if you’re a big enough sports hero!

I’ve never been harsh about who anyone wants to be as a political supporter. I just hope that you take part, because it’s important to have a voice in any election, albeit a small one. I have supported frontrunners when they have fallen to a loss and have had my hopes dashed. I have sat out for the run and simply voted. Today, I’m going to use my right as a citizen to speak my truth.

If you choose your right to vote this election, make this your primary rule: Is this person worthy of your trust and the trust of all America?

These are the questions you should ask yourself:

1. Is he/she running on a platform that is based on hate or prejudice?
2. Is this person an extremist in any way?
3. Is this person qualified to run a country based on his/her past?
4. Does this person deny ANYONE rights as Americans?
5. Lastly, when it comes to the economy and war, does your presidential pick have the wherewithal to fight against a congress and senate that will tear down every desire to make effective change?

My criteria sounds odd, when you think about credentials for running for president, but look closer. If someone is running on a platform of hate, how could he or she be fair? If a candidate is extreme, then our trust will wane whenever he/she takes office. We will have no idea how far his/her deeply seated extremism will go. Experience, of course, speaks for itself. But, the fourth criteria about denying rights to anyone, speaks of the most important aspect of a leader. If a candidate can’t look out into the audience and see every face as his or her brother or sister, mother or father, then he or she doesn’t get my vote.

Then, my last criteria, has come from years of watching effective people lose the battle to do good because of a senate or congress that won’t work with him—simply against. These days, getting laws and change passed through congress is more about being on the side of the majority than anything else. So, I want the president to be strong in his/her decision making, but also adamant enough to sit like a praying Buddha in the middle of this crazy, antagonistic senate and congress to get something—anything—done worth changing.

Cosmology and Truth: The Difference Between Religion and Spirituality #gayrights #creativethought #lawofmind

“The Big Bang Theory” is a great comedic show that makes me laugh almost daily. However, for most of the scientific world, the words are also the answer to the question of cosmology, which is the theory or origin of the earth. The only people who have tried to deny The Big Bang Theory are, interestingly enough, religion. For instance, Christians say that the bible denotes that the world was made and framed by God in seven days. They blindly feel that science denies their religious belief, so they refute any science with the Word of God.

I remember when I was a Pentecostal minister in New York. I worked at a large computer firm for my day job. Almost every one of my associates was either agnostic or atheist. They all thought I was over the top with my religion, but still loved me. However, they took every opportunity to prove their scientific theories over my belief. I remember closing my eyes to their reality. I didn’t care what anyone said. I believed what I believed. My mind was completely made up and closed to hearing their refutes.

So, my closed mind kept me from challenging my Christian beliefs, but it also left me with many questions that I simply couldn’t face alone in the quiet of my own apartment. When I finally began to ask the questions of God and the scriptures that my friends had been asking me, I realized that science and spirituality didn’t have to be enemies. In fact, science sometimes actually began to prove the existence of something greater and more powerful operating in the universe.

For instance, the theories of quantum physics suggest that all time is happening at the same moment. When we break this down, it could be the reason why we have dreams about things we don’t know. This could be the answer to déjà vu. This could also help a spiritual person understand past lives. Yes, I know, none of this helps the Christian believe that science and God are one. Or could it? Are spiritual people and religious people of the same ilk?

No. Religious people tend to live blindly, committing to something without proof. Religions that would ask you to sacrifice yourself for God are usually the kind of blind faith that would blow up a building or destroy life with a human bomb. But, is this blind sacrifice any less destructive when your religion tells you to deny teachers and scientists all over the world to keep your faith?

When you don’t believe in the science that says gay people were born with a predisposition in their brains to cause them to be gay, then you would, instead, believe in a law that denies another person’s basic human rights.

I watched a newscast yesterday with an interview from a Republican frontrunner for president. He said that he had many gay friends, but simply didn’t believe that being gay is a right you can fight for, legally. I understand that he wanted to speak up for those who had religious beliefs different than mine, and perhaps, yours, but his need to protect rights would allow others to be disenfranchised. How can that be right? And, we’re back to the difference between religion and spirituality.

No one, I know, who practices the laws of basic spirituality is trying to dishonor other people. Usually, without the need to fight, we authentically step out into our faith by loving and being compassionate to others. However, I know that when someone who is religious tries to tread on my rights, I will keep them from trespassing on my premises. A gay person who has fought hard to gain equal right will not stand by as blind religion coerces others to fight their battles in the face of truth.

I saw a movie last night that had a bus full of young, brainwashed men and women who were chanting something their religious leader had suggested was truth and honorable. None of their minds could be shaken with their reality, which was that they were all going to prison for conspiring to bomb a U.S. building. No American would deny that this kind of religion is lethal. As the bus traveled along and they continued to chant, each of them began to break their own thumbs, which released them from their shackles and allowed them to overcome the two guards with guns. Their leader, in turn, escaped the confines of the bus.

This scenario registered in my mind as the power of religion being deadly. I am glad that Spirit opened my consciousness to something greater than just words. I now believe in the Power that created all that I can see and more. I don’t have to deny what Spirit is to believe in my truth. I simply embrace science and spirituality in the same breath. I now pray: “God, that is, that was, and will always be expanding in the universe, and as small as particle physics; I am one with your greatness as I have been created in the image and likeness of You.” I don’t have to deny anything that is real and honest, to have a strong spiritual belief in a unified force that is greater than you and I, but operating in us and through us with power and love that will change the world.

The Imitation Game #Imitationgame

If you have ever questioned why tolerance in the face of abject prejudice is more important today than any other compassionate trait, this screen drama will give you the courage to look past differences to find the greatness in ever special life. The great Joni Mitchell sang, “I’ve looked at life from both sides now.” In The Imitation Game, we get to see the brilliant writing of Graham Moore depict the life of an extraordinary gay man, Alan Turing, who singlehandedly developed the first computer to crack the Nazi’s cryptic codes to save millions of lives during the World Wars of the 1930-40s.

What this movie so brilliantly depicts is how “different” is not only good, it’s necessary and beautiful. I believe everyone who has ever sat through a religious service condemning gays or anyone for being different—needs to see this movie. The truth is, that the person sitting in the church or mosque might not even be alive had it not been for Turing. Millions of Americans were saved because of how he cracked the Nazi code to find enemy ships and submarines during the World Wars, singlehandedly using strategic military moves to overturn Germany’s commanding power. This story would include my father, who lived to tell about fighting in the battle of Normandy. I might not be sitting here, if it were not for Turing having the military intelligence that gave the US and its allies the edge in that particular battle.

Turing also was the first to let a female work for the British military in a position other than a secretary. Joan Clarke was almost as brilliant, if not as smart as Turing, who discovered her ability to solve a special-skills puzzle developed by Turing in less than the time it took the brightest man in England. Clarke was, still, almost dismissed simply because she was a woman. Turing saw her potential to help the cause and let her help him, in spite of the reticence of all involved.

After the war had ended, Turing, depicted by actor Benedict Cumberbatch, held to his vow of secrecy about his discovery and must destroy his computer for fear of treason and death. He gets dismissed from his work in the British military and finds himself confined to a quiet life, trying to recreate his only one true love, who died of tuberculosis, when his young mind was too immature to reconcile the anguish.

Yet, despite Turing’s incredible accomplishments during the war, in the 1950s he was sentenced to prison or given the option of taking hormone therapy, because he was homosexual, which likely caused his suicidal thoughts and ultimate demise.

I read a friend’s Facebook entry today about how male actors refuse to play gay roles because of stereotype. Really? I thought our men actors were far away from that premise. But, apparently, (as my college friend is an actor in LA), he has seen this kind of anti-gay behavior over and over again. I do believe he is correct about the prejudice that comes with declining a gay role. Look at Oscar winner, Dustin Hoffman, who surged into the limelight for forging through prejudice by playing a transvestite to keep his children. Our last year’s Oscar winner, for playing a straight man with HIV, who learns to embrace the gay world after being disenfranchised from the straight world. Neither have gotten stereotyped. And that hot tall blonde who played the character Arrow on “Smallville” and a gay character on “Revenge” is now playing a hot straight man on “Mistresses.”

Let’s get down to brass tax. What do you really feel about GLBT people? Are you pretending not to be prejudiced because you want to be in the mainstream, but really feel being different is against your moral belief? If so, then I ask you to put aside your prejudice for a moment and Google the psychological studies that have been done about being gay or transgender. Why do you think that a therapist is never allowed, by law and code of ethics, to exclaim that being gay is wrong? Because it is simply not. God created all of us. And He don’t make no mistakes… It’s not a choice. It has never been a choice. And gay prejudice has ruined more lives and caused more hate than any war. It’s time to put your hate down and let God judge his own children. Okay?

Falsely Imprisoned: #NelsonMandela

The first time I saw the word #Apartheid was in a monologue from an English play I learned for an acting audition. In college at twenty years old, I didn’t even know it meant segregation in South Africa. When I researched the word, I realized, even though I had never used the term, I had certainly felt the underwhelming resolve of apartheid in America and also in my own life as a gay man in a straight world.

Nelson Mandela fought a good fight and stayed in prison for a large majority of his adult life because of how committed he was to his core beliefs. When the South African government released Mandela, he almost immediately arose to power for four years. People of South Africa cried in the streets when the segregation had met its match, and anti-apartheid support won the battle for equality. Mandela’s life remains something to celebrate and to continue to use as a template where lives are downtrodden and prejudiced.

My first instance of hearing about Nelson Mandela came about as a result of a misquote I read in church. Many people thought Marianne Williamson, the famous spiritual writer and leader, quoted Nelson Mandela as saying: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world…” When, actually, Marianne wrote the famous quote. I’m not sure how all this misdirection about the quote came about. But, alas, this was my pathway to understanding the man, Nelson Mandela.

As I discovered his truths and his fight, my own heart rose up to reach the heights of power I needed to take on the demons in my life and with those who had less power around me, fighting the good fight of anti-apartheid for gay rights. I believe the resolve is similar. Who deserves to be separate but equal? Who deserves to pay the same taxes, but not receive the same benefits? Who can claim to be compassionate and not see or understand the pains of the GLBT community in the world, especially in America, Russia, India, and countries led by dictators and cruel laws against women and gays?

We all must rise up and speak our truth as Mandela did, even if it means imprisonment. Can any of us stand up for our rights, even if it means defying authorities? I wonder if I would have the strength to go to jail for my truth.

I once didn’t sign a recording contract with a Christian label because in the contract it politely asked if I be gay. At that time, I realized I would accept nothing more than truth for myself and my life, despite giving up what I had dreamed about most of my adult life. So, I could say that I had put my own recording career in prison for the past 30 years. Recently, though, I realized this and decided that I would quit teaching voice lessons and finally try to understand the premise on which God and Spirit would have me use my own singing voice.

Sometimes, I feel like standing on a mountain and singing at the top of my lungs, like I did in the shower this morning. A cry deep in my soul needs to be released, like the imprisoned souls met with prejudice and tyranny. I want nothing more than to express my soul without judgment and not to deny my true self, just as Mandela fought for. Let’s use the memory of his powerful battle against apartheid to muster strength to fight for our own truths today and every day!

Yeah for Women in Power—Two Secret Service Employees Under Investigation

Our government should represent the population. By placing all males and only certain races and sexual preferences in the congress, we have all done ourselves a disservice when we try to find representation on the national and state levels.

After leaving an unloaded bullet in a guest’s room at a prominent hotel, a secret serviceman, under the detail of the president, is said to have tried to return to the hotel room to retrieve the bullet, but only after the hotel manager had called the White House to report the incident. When investigators checked the said Secret Serviceman’s Blackberry, they found sexually suggestive messages to another government employee. Both are under investigation, after only 7 months of President Obama’s first woman to head the Secret Service.

I’ve always heard that when you want something done right, ask a woman. I’m a male, and I still believe that this statement, vying any prejudice about straight men, for the most part is true. I believe the days of the male dominated regime in government are changing. This may take some time, but the women and gay men, who represent about 65% of the country, see the need for a matriarchal rule to get balance back in the government.

I recently saw an interview of the women in congress. Even though the women were on both sides of the partisan barrier, all of them seemed to get along. Each spoke with such poise and understanding about the whole problem, not just a one-sided, partisan view. I believe we need a more balanced government with more women, and definitely some gay influence.

In the last census in 2012, 50.2 % of the population were women, 16.9% Hispanic, 5.1% Asian, and 13.9% African American. All of the rest of the population was less than 1%.  Since it is very difficult to tell how many gay people live in the U.S. because of how many are in the closet, let’s say, for sure there are a documented 9.5% gay out of the closet, and probably double that or more in the closet. The Kinsey report said that 55% of all men asked were gay, but that has been debunked several times since the report. Of course, it was debunked by national census that only shares what people are willing to report. Trust me, when you go online to meet gay men and women, more than half are married or in the closet. The gay demographic is completely eschewed because of outright lying of men and women not willing to live an Authentic Life.

So, if all of us minorities are to gain the power that we deserve in the government, we must step up to the plate and vote. Even more so, if you are in a minority and in a position to run for office, you definitely should try. I don’t have the calling for public office, or I would step out. I have little to no knowledge about the government and law, which would make me a terrible candidate. I have, however, told my story of being fired for being gay before Nashville counsel in hopes that the story would be honored.  I have many friends who would be perfect for a political position, especially powerful and brilliant lesbian women lawyers who often lead the way in public policy for GLBT people.

That being said, this blog had normally been reserved for spiritual growth. But as I see it, we can’t grow completely into our authentic self unless we have a place to grow. For instance, in Tennessee, I can’t marry the man I love because of the law. To be truly authentic and act in accordance to my heart, I would love to someday soon be married. But the law disagrees with my desire. For me to live a fully authentic life, I’m going to have to either move to one of the 15 states that allow me to marry, or do some of my own protesting against narrow-minded people running my state. If I don’t, I only have myself to blame for not having any rights.

A Year to CLEAR Challenge!

The acronym CLEAR stands for (Compassionate, Loving, Enthusiastic, And Relationship-Ready). The goal of this project is to engulf readers in a weekly study that will transform them by removing blocks, promote self-growth, and give them wings to fly freely into daily life. Two Birds with One Stone

Today, as I was driving home from a friend’s house, two birds—flying in tandem—slammed directly into my windshield—dropped from the air. I couldn’t have avoided the collision if I were Svengali. I looked from my rearview mirror to see them both flop to the street. My heart sunk.

I heard myself murmur, “Huh, two birds with one car!”

I wasn’t trying to be funny. Sometimes, though, when something outrageously horrible happens, my faux Turrets disease, comical side pops out to keep my mind from dwelling on the terrible present. This was the case.

I drove down the street bewildered. Why on earth would God allow two precious little sparrows to be killed by my car in that moment? I didn’t like the Now. In fact, I hated it, and I was a little angry at God. So, I tried to think of the lesson that those beautiful creatures were trying to teach me sacrificing their lives. The lesson must be huge, because it had my utmost attention.

My lesson yesterday had been about rejection. I still had been dwelling on it a lot lately. I found myself telling a client that, sometimes when you are in a secure relationship, old behaviors rise up to be healed, because you feel as if you are in a safe place for growth. Perhaps, this is the case.

I asked Spirit to help me understand what else I would be killing off if I attended to easing my anxious obsession about rejection. I didn’t get an answer right then. When I arrived home, I had about twenty chores I wanted to accomplish before my first client. I wanted to help out a friend and cut his grass. After that, I scurried around the garden and about the house making my special sausage sauce with homemade pasta, pizza dough to keep refrigerated for 3 days (my secret), pizza sauce, changing the filter in the pond, watering plants, pulling out weeds, and running the sweeper. Those were the main chores. I had more energy than normal.

I noticed, after my four hours of running around like an aerobics teacher and before my shower, I noticed that I had lost two pounds since the morning, and that was even after I had eaten breakfast. I was pretty stoked about that. I’m almost down to my fighting weight. (Could that be the killing two birds with one stone?)

As I sang opera in the shower, I began to think about the great day gay men and women from all over the US had yesterday. Our struggle to get the government to treat us like first class citizens had been validated. Allen and I went to a party at Tribe last evening to celebrate. So many people were jubilant and excited about what this Supreme Court decision meant for the future of our lives.

I, in particular, have never really considered all the implications of what it would be like to be married to a man and have equal benefits as my straight friends, family, and neighbors. I felt even more secure about the future than ever before. Soon, I want to settle down with a partner and make a commitment for life.

Maybe this entire scenario about ridding my life of my rejection issues is about preparing me for a wonderful future with a mate who I can commit to for the rest of my life.

Perhaps the message on the windshield this morning was this: If you are strong enough to face your worst fears of rejection, you will also become brave enough to love with abandonment, security, and longevity!

I like it.  Thank you, birds!

One more thought: maybe feeling something as rejection so deeply isn’t such a bad quality. The more I consider the purpose of the now, the greater I can feel it. Then—the key to this issue—is to release what ever feeling it is to God and to the greatest good! Otherwise, you may end up dwelling in that negative space for far too long and end up in a depression. We don’t want that.
