The Intricate Past #livinginthepast #yournewstory #Spirituality #now

Remembering the old story about Lot’s wife, I imagined turning into a pillar of salt about a million times for looking at, mulling over, rewriting, and sifting over the DEVISIVE PAST. Why can’t we just let go of the past like two ducks squabbling on a peaceful lake? A second later, they float away gracefully, never looking back.
Getting over the past is an intricate problem most of us continue to battle. The problem with NOT getting over the past is that we waste so much time angry, in our depressed minds, and simply not being open to the awesomeness that COULD BE if we would just open our hearts, minds, and specifically our eyes to the present.
As a life coach, I often see how the past can stymie and stop someone cold in his or her tracks—just as that pillar of salt—unable to move forward with any strength or direction. How do we overcome what should be the simplest task: releasing and letting go?
We think of our mind often as our physical brain. This is an incorrect thought. The brain is a measurable physical organ. The mind is immeasurable.
The mind can stay encapsulated in the body, stuck in the never-ending stream of stories from the past. It has another option. The mind can climb on to a bridge above the stream of stories and simply observe. This observer mind is accessed through self-inquiry, silence, and listening to your own thoughts without judgment.
When we can become advanced enough in our own self-discovery, we learn to access the most important part of the mind that will lead us out of the past and into peace.
My own journey of recognizing how the past and my past stories have overwhelmed my life and took over my mind like a fast growing cancer is completely documented in my latest book, “Your New Story, Your New Life.”  The key to the change is in the book’s subtitle: The Metaphysical Mind.

Physical Depression! #depression #depressionsymptoms #whatstrending #signsofdepression

Recently, I had a friend who had been suffering from various physical maladies, ranging from headaches to sleep problems to joint and muscle pain. She went to many doctors but could not get a clear diagnosis. One of the doctors, who thought she was a feigning her illnesses, suggested she go to a psychiatrist.

When she reluctantly went to the appointment with the psychiatrist, her dismay turned into a clear path to understanding her health issues and a true path toward healing, including counseling. Every physical symptom she was experiencing was as a result of severe depression disorder. Most of us know about the emotional symptoms of depression. But you may not know that depression can be associated with many physical symptoms, as well.
In fact, many people with depression suffer from chronic pain or other physical symptoms. (From WedMD.com) These include:
  1. Headaches. These are fairly common in people with depression. If you already had migraine headaches, they may seem worse if you're depressed.
  2. Back pain. If you already suffer with back pain, it may be worse if you become depressed.
  3. Muscle aches and joint painDepressioncan make any kind of chronic painworse.
  4. Chest pain. Obviously, it's very important to get chest pain checked out by an expert right away. It can be a sign of serious heartstomachlungor other problems. But depression can contribute to the discomfort associated with chest pain.
  5. Digestive problems. You might feel queasy or nauseated. You might have diarrheaor become chronically constipated.
  6. Exhaustion and fatigue. No matter how much you sleep, you may still feel tired or worn out. Getting out of the bed in the morning may seem very hard, even impossible.
  7. Sleeping problems. Many people with depression can't sleepwell anymore. They wake up too early or can't fall asleep when they go to bed. Others sleepmuch more than normal.
  8. Change in appetite or weight. Some people with depression lose their appetite and lose weight. Others find they crave certain foods -- like carbohydrates -- and weigh more; and
  9. Dizzinessor lightheadedness.
As you can see, a lack of the Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins in the brain can cause many amplified physical symptoms in the body. If you are experiencing more than two of the symptoms above and believe you may be suffering from untreated depression, please go see a physician or a psychiatrist as soon as possible.

The Importance of Mental Clarity #antidepressants #prescriptionmeds #medicine #holistichealth

Nature often mirrors our lives. When I want to clear my Koi pond of murky waters I change the filter, vacuum the bottom of the pond, clean the pump, add chemicals that clear the water and kill molds and fungi that would create green muck. All of this together creates clean water for me to see my beautiful fish. Otherwise, I spend lots of money feeding Koi and Goldfish that I never get to see, because they float on the bottom of the dirty pond, beautiful and expensive, but invisible to my mind.

The metaphor here is that the fish are our spirit-led thoughts.

The pond is our mind.

The murky, cloudy muck is the nature of life: sometimes—busy jobs, competitive thoughts, lusting minds, laziness, a crazy day with the kids, over-booking our lives, addictions, and anything else you can think of that will fill your mind with thought that doesn’t quite serve the big purpose.

Each of these life occupants facilitates murky water. The more you have on your plate, the cloudier your mind becomes. The cloudier your mind is, the harder it is to hear Spirit leading you to your peace and to your divine path.

So, what in this metaphor that will clear the path to hearing God’s voice?
Changing the filter: This can be likened to changing the part of your mind you are listening to. We talk about two primary parts: the deductive and inductive mind. The cloudy part tends to lean into the deductive, reasoning mind. (When you add 1 + 1 you use this part of your mind). The inductive mind is the observer, nonjudgmental part of the consciousness, the imagination and dreaming mind, you must be in to disconnect from the world thinking. This is your primary goal.

Vacuum the bottom of the pond.  This is a metaphor for cleaning up the messes in your mind. If there are things laying around in your mind undone, do them! If you have unforgiveness in your life, do some forgiving. If you have a pile of papers on your desk, clean them up. This is just clutter that makes a mess in your mind. Things left undone and decision left undecided are just ways of keeping you from mental clarity. Fix this now! You are the only who can do it.

The chemicals in the pond can be likened to medications that may help with clarity. I’m on an antidepressant and have been for 18 years. A small dosage of Selexa for me is the difference between living a normal life and living a life like an animal stuck in a garbage can unable to get back out after he has gotten in there to feed. It’s a constant struggle to see clearly when I’m not on this medication. My mind is simply weak, so I give it a chemical to stop the obstruction of serotonins to the brain, which give me a feeling of well-being.
That being said, if you are bi-polar, and you expect to function in a world that will accept you, you better get on your meds. If you have ADHD and anticipate anyone to listen to your ramblings of three different topics with no breaths in between, you are probably not going to find that person. Get on your meds. They bring clarity to us and to you.

That’s what psychotropic medicine do. They rewire your brain to function in a normal pattern, so you can see clearly, think clearly, and manage life more easily. Don’t make it harder for yourself in life, because you think you can be the strong one who can get along without your medications. You’ll end up losing friends, jobs, and lots of life before you realize you just simply need to take one pill a day to function in a real world. Trust me, I’ve been through this many times. I’ve simply come to a place where I realize, like arthritic pain or a runny nost, you have to manage your illness. Your brain also has diseases that can be treated fairly easily. But it will take your cooperation.

Listen, you are a far better person, when your mind is clear and your body is free of toxic waste. Quit trying to feed your body food to quiet the demons in your mind. Quit trying to drink booze to quiet the obsessive thoughts. Stop smoking pot and cigarettes to put a smoke screen for the rest of the world not see beautiful, wonderful you.
Quit fighting the silence.

In the silence there is a sacred place where you will find the answer to every question you are looking for. In the silence, you’ll find God waiting for you!

Anti-Depression #depression #antidepressants #coping

In all of my years in practice as a life coach and clinical hypnotherapist (27 years), I have met many people who have suffered from some sort of depression. However, the difference between depression onset by a traumatic event, such as a death, or a divorce, or business loss, may go away in due time. But, clinical depression is a malfunction of the chemicals in the brain, so it has no onset, but may be triggered into worse depression with a tragic event. For some people with clinical depression, just like any kind neurological disorder, medication is required to stay afloat and keep a healthy amount of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine functioning in the body.

I remember the day clearly, some thirty years ago, when a psychiatrist told me that I would probably have to be on an antidepressant for the rest of my life. I thought to myself, this can’t be. I do everything that I can to stay healthy, workout, do therapy, stay spiritually grounded… how can I be depressed?

But the truth is that clinical depression has little or nothing to do with you personally. Most times it is inherited. Almost my entire family has some amount of it. It’s like a thyroid problem or weakened eyesight. We don’t blame ourselves for these malfunctions, but most people get very conscious of the stigma of taking an antidepressant. I have had many clients over the years use marijuana, alcohol, and other drugs of choice, but refuse to take an antidepressant. Maybe the stigma of depression was too much for them to face. These days, most antidepressants cost less for a month’s dosage than going out to lunch once.

Recently, I had a major change in my life. Everything was different. And I was grieving a break-up from someone I loved. A few people around me who were close enough to see me when my smiling veneer wasn’t plastered on my face could see that something was wrong. But, my defining moments were two things: I began to fear the things I don’t usually fear, and I had crying spells that seemed to come from nowhere or from minor difficulties. I had a close friend suggest that I go back to the doctors and get checked to see if my dosage was correct. (It hadn’t been changed in 15 years.)

Just thinking about going back to a place who diagnosed me of having this lifelong illness was traumatic. But, I knew that the friend was right. Almost immediately upon getting my medication adjusted—ever so slightly—I felt like my old self again. Literally, I wake up with a smile on my face as I had been doing until the trauma.

I’m not saying that every depressive bout needs a drug to take it away. Processing your grief is important, and I will continue to look at my grief and listen to my heart about how to deal with it. But taking an antidepressant to make me feel normal enough to cope with the grief was an important step to recovery.

Periodically, I like to remind people who suffer from depression that they are okay. Really, no one is judging you for having a clinical problem. In fact, if they are judging you, you have no room in your life for someone like that. More importantly, the only person’s opinions you should consider greatly are your own. You can’t control anyone else’s opinions, so you might as well get used to creating your own sense of security and truth. Life will treat you with the respect that you give yourself—always!

Cast in the Wrong Role

Recently, I volunteered for a Christmas show at my church. The guest director had heard I was a good singer, but had no idea of what kind of singer I was (pop, jazz, Broadway, opera, country). He cast seven other people in this show, having heard and worked with all of the others. As each cast member got his/her beautiful solo, specifically chosen for his/her voice, I listened intently for mine. When the director came to me, I was told my song was a raucous country song, arranged by Toby Keith, who couldn’t be less like me than a piece of coal is to a cut piece of glass.

As the temporary music coordinator at church and a volunteer for this show, my job has been to undergird the production in a way that is helpful and useful. I have learned all of the songs for the chorale. In fact, most days in rehearsal I’m the one who has his part memorized before the music director ever plays it on the piano. So, I spend most rehearsals listening to the music director painfully pound out parts for the non-music readers.

I’m told I am supposed to begin this show on stage by myself, before the chorale enters the stage. As you can probably guess, I have little confidence that I can be someone I’m not. I have spent my entire adult life teaching the principles of living an authentic life and feel vastly uncomfortable doing otherwise.'
What should I do? I ask myself. If I go to the director six days before the show, I sound like a whining diva. If I simply bite the bullet and sing the song, I put the show in jeopardy, because I simply can’t pull off starting this show the way it was intended. After rehearsing the song for my mother and sister, who are always supportive, they said, “You are not going to sing that song at church, are you?”

I just moved from Nashville where I had coached 100s of country singers for almost thirty years. I know what a country singer should sound like. I am not one of them. Country is not in my blood. When I would try to demonstrate for one of my country singers, I would have to mimic what I thought the song should sound like. In other words, there was no real place of authenticity to go to get to the sound I needed, so I had to play a role for which I would never be cast. As I would listen to myself or hear myself on rehearsal recordings demonstrating, I would always cringe listening.

Many people play parts in life that they simply were not cast for. I see this most often with family men in their mid-thirties to fifty. Most of the guys I have seen over the years for life coaching were younger men when they got married in a time when marriage was a given, especially in rich cultural instances.

After having a family, these men don’t have the ability to pursue new work, because they can’t chance not having an income for their young families. They often can’t move somewhere else on a whim. They certainly wouldn’t leave the wife and kids, because they no longer want the responsibility. So, they simply feel stuck with the cards they had dealt themselves.

In a world where most young people don’t get married till their late twenties and thirties, now, the older men look with awe at the young people taking time to discover themselves and their passions. Depressed men in the late thirties to fifty range are in epidemic proportions. We don’t hear much about this depression, because no fathers and husbands are willing to admit it to anyone, not even their wives. They would much rather immerse themselves into sports, addictive behavior, philandering, and simple emotional negligence, than abandon their responsibilities to their loving families.

In some ways, you have to applaud their fortitude. In six days, my commitment to this project and being cast in the wrong role will be over, and I’ll go on my merry way, trying not to get stuck in the same situation again. Helping men find hope for their lives who have chosen paths outside of their passion is the hardest place a coach has to go, because not many choices exist for these men.

Lack of options is usually why most people get depressed in the first place. So, a good life coach tries to help a depressed person find healthy options and new ways of looking at old paradigms. Most times, I have asked the men to take time out for themselves and do something selfish and impassioned. But, even then, a lot of men don’t have the extra time or money to do anything more than what they already do to keep the family and home running appropriately, working on the house and the yard on their time off from a fifty-hour work week and wearing clothes from the Thrift Store, to have the money to buy their children school clothes and books.

The one bit of advice I can give to anyone in this situation is to get real and stay real. Be honest with the people around you, if it’s at all possible. If you don’t find honesty is a possibility, find someone who will listen to your gripes and help you see a brighter future ahead, even if it’s just a friend. Sometimes, just getting to voice your thoughts helps extinguish them. Often, one of those fathers will hear the sound of his child saying, “I love you, Daddy!” and everything will feel better for the moment. They realize that the bigger picture is not completely about their own happiness.

Depression about life is often lifted when a client does charity work or feeds the poor. You can get a true perspective on life when you get out of your own comfort zone and look at the bigger picture. Know, too, that most commitments have an ending. Look toward to that end and know that eventually you will be able to make stronger choices for yourself, even if your time is years away.

I had one fifty-five-year-old single father just marry off his last son. He told me that, finally, he was going to sell his house, get a condo, and begin to search for a suitable mate. This was a guy I dated in the midst of his large responsibility. I remember that I never got to be first in his life. As a result, I moved on. The guy he chooses now will be lucky to have this man. He is a great person. Without the burden of children and a home, I’m sure he will be a much better companion and mate.

Depression: The Silent Killer #depression #antidepressants #mentalillness

Depression: The Silent Killer
#depression #antidepressants #mentalillness

In the 90’s I had been in a committed, live-in relationship for seven years. I had discovered my partner was cheating, needed to leave him and our home together, wanted to leave him but was too comfortable, and felt paralyzed inside. Finally, I got the nerve to get my own apartment and venture out on my own. In the days that followed, I went to the doctor’s office for a yearly physical. The nurse practitioner asked me a few probing questions: “How are you feeling physically? Have you been through any situation where you have felt hurt or abused by another individual? Have you lost or gained weight without understanding why?”

In answering these questions, I broke down in tears in the office. I was still very saddened by the entire experience of the divorce. In the early 90s, antidepressants weren’t as common as they are now. The practitioner suggested I go on Zoloft and see if I feel better in a couple weeks. I had told him that I had been feeling down for almost two years, which concerned him. This news would concern me, as well, as a Life Coach. So, I did as he told me and took the medication. As the days unfolded, Zoloft made my stomach hurt. So, the practitioner tried another medication, Effexor, which didn’t seem to affect my digestion as much.

In three weeks, almost to the day, I felt as if I had crawled out of a very dark cave I had been living in—not just for two years—but my entire life. I saw trees and birds and nature as if I’d never ever recognized they existed around me 24-7. My entire life had been filled with abusive situations since I was young. Apparently, I moved into the inner recess of my mind to live for the rest of the hours of the day when my complete attention wasn’t needed.

I can remember people saying, “Isn’t that beautiful?” I would look at a flower or nature scene and simply wonder, what is beautiful? And, then, I would retreat back to my mind where everything was fantasy, and I could decide my fate with complete accuracy. I have been thankful to that psychiatric nurse practitioner who diagnosed my depression for my entire life, because I was, indeed, very depressed. I had gone undiagnosed for twenty years. I know for certain that many times in that twenty years I had suicidal ideations. Who knows if I would even be here to write about it, had I not been diagnosed.

Undiagnosed depression can cause many problems in the world. When you look at some of the world’s most terrible disasters, such as a student going on a shooting rampage at school and killing teachers and other students, we are simply looking at undiagnosed psychological disorders. So, who is responsible for these children and adults who can’t see for themselves that they have a problem? I remember discussing with a very good friend the need for him to get on an antidepressant. He was exhibiting all the signs that one sees in a depressed person: sleeping too much, gaining or losing weight, despondency, big highs and big lows, a great deal of illness, and a glazed over look in his eyes. He jumped down my throat and became angry with me. He thought that I was saying he was crazy. After I told him that I took an antidepressant, he still was angry. I explained about the need for serotonin in the brain to feel happy, but I really didn’t understand the dynamics of the brain then, so my explanation fell on deaf ears. Now, I was saying he was not only crazy but sick as well? I’m not sure. But, I don’t believe he ever got on any medication or went to the psychiatrist as I recommended. He stayed on a mental rolling coaster, until I quietly exited his life. This kind of exodus happens a great deal in depressed people’s lives, which only makes the problem worse.
Depression is all around us. We must take action and try to lead depressed people to help. All of the indicators of depression can easily be found on the Internet where anyone can see the contributing factors and even the medications that one can receive to help. We are in an age where these undiagnosed students should be found and helped before they reach the level of crying out for help by shooting people. No reason in the world exists for seven teachers a day to see a despondent child and not find a way to recommend to a parent, or someone in charge, that this student should get checked by a physician.
Helping yourself define your mental stability is all part of Finding Authentic You. Listen, I really need your help to buy my new book (below) and share it with friends. No project in this world launches without a community of people who value its importance. This is why I have made it $2.99 for the download version.
