Rockin’ Too Hard on New Year’s Eve #holidayrun #holidaystress #knowyourtruth #spirituality

Rockin’ Too Hard on New Year’s Eve
#holidayrun #holidaystress #knowyourtruth #spirituality

From twenty to thirty years old I lived in Midtown, Manhattan. I live ten-minutes away from 40th and Broadway where the Famous New Year’s Eve Ball drops. Occasionally, at 30 minutes until midnight, I would walk over to 44th and Broadway, weave through the myriad 0f people and stand in the center of all of the craziness until the ball dropped.

I wanted to feel the sensation of the biggest party in the world. What I felt instead was rash behavior all around me from drunkenness, drugs, fights, inappropriate amorous behavior and, it seemed, a need to express erratic behavior simply because he or she could. The lines to get home on the subway for a million people took until 5 or 6 a.m. to wane. Still, people didn’t care. They came for a party, some loud music, and to see the New Years roll in with a bang. Maybe more importantly, to let go of that old year that stunk worse than the street would the next morning.

Why is it that people party so hard? What exactly does it offer them?

Continued from above:
I spoke with a great friend this morning who has a sister who showed up on Christmas Eve at his home drunk. She was loud, obnoxious, and even begged her mother to stay up and drink with her till dawn. In other words, her drunkenness wasn’t enough. She wanted to continue to drink, because, apparently, she did not want her buzz to wear off. Why do you suppose someone who normally doesn’t party so hard would want to unleash and let go with such abandonment?
My theory is that people who are not in touch with what they need in life or are not a spiritual path, generally store up negativity and anxiety. Occasionally, or maybe even every weekend, they go out and party to keep their minds from obsessing about their unhappiness and to keep from erupting like a dormant volcano that at its core is still connected to the fiery core of the earth.
When someone continues to drink way after they are already drunk, this is definitely a sign of alcoholism, even if it is on a binge basis. When you have one drink and all you can think about is the next one, it’s time to see a therapist or go to a 12-step program about your addiction.
No outside source, drug, extravagance or love interest can change or relieve your level of anxiety and stress. You must take care of that all on your own. You can have the help and aid of a professional or programs, but you will soon find out that your problem is a personal one that can only be changed by you.
To sum up, wanting to celebrate is okay. But understand that if you have a need to party too often and too hard with drugs and alcohol, then you probably need some help discovering what you are running away from.
Anxiety, hating your job, struggle in relationships, growing up with abuse, financial distress only get greater when you add an addiction on top of it. To get your life in order, you must take the steps to watch your behavior and decide if it is helping your life or hurting it.
No amount of partying and festivities can delight your heart enough to be worth the headache and malaise you will certainly feel the next day. The older you get, the worse that boomerang effect becomes.
Have a great New Years by doing a Burning Bowl Ceremony. Write down all of your negative things you want to be rid of the next year. Burn it in a bowl. Then, of course, pray for guidance for planting new, amazing seeds for next year.

As the Mother “As One of Your Servants-Part III” #addiction #prodigalson #forgiveness #whatstrending #hittingbottom #spiritualliving

Yesterday, we talked about the point of view of the eldest child in the story of the Prodigal Son. As a review, I told the story as a modern-day tale with the eldest child as a daughter, who stayed at home and worked for her wealthy, single mother at their burgeoning business; while the youngest, bisexual son ran off to squander his million on the world’s finest everything.

The question for today was: What would you be thinking if you were the mother of the long-lost youngest son?

After three years of not hearing from your child, whom you have given his inheritance early, you get a phone call from your head housekeeper. “Your son is home and safe!” The wealthy business owner has meetings scheduled for the rest of the day, she hasn’t eaten lunch because her morning was so busy, and her desk has more paperwork than she can handle. Still, she puts down the phone, asks her secretary to reschedule all of her meetings, and rushes home to greet her son. Why is she not angry?

In the story, as its recounted in the bible, the narrator’s point of view is “Third Person Perspective.” It is not the “Omniscient Perspective,” where the storyteller gets to know everything every character thinks. In the third person perspective, one character, who tells the story, only sees the actions of the other characters. So, we have a dilemma in the telling. We actually don’t know what the father thinks. We simply know his actions.

This gives us an opportunity to recognize a bit about spirit or God. By the telling of the story, we see that it doesn’t matter what the father thinks. The importance of the story is how he responds to the repentant child. He rejoices by giving him a party and welcoming him back with open arms. His words: “For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found” (Luke 15: 11-32).

Alcoholism runs rampant in my family, as does addiction. So, understanding the intricacies of feelings from all sides of the family unit has always been a great fascination. I was much like the eldest daughter in this story many times, when I saw parents coddle and indulge abusive children who were in the throws of addiction. But, as I have aged, watched, and taken it all, I can imagine completely how a parent would feel if her son was three years clean, repentant of his old ways, and wanted to return to her loving arms a new man. I would, also, celebrate.

I might now kill the fatted calf, but I would certainly be thankful to God. I might be extremely happy, but I would continue to follow the child’s growth and encourage counseling and meetings as he acclimated back into a normal life.

You see, the father in the story of the Prodigal son, metaphorically, is God. So, we are not meant to see into the mind of God, probably because we would anthropomorphize Spirit’s feelings. I like that we only see God’s forgiving actions, and, also that we are onlookers as God is willing to give us our inheritance whenever we ask for it, as the master does to his youngest son, without hesitation.

The eldest doesn’t get her share, because she never asks. She simply acts like a betrayed martyr, probably feelings loads of resentment. In general, I’d say that Source doesn’t reward a resentful mind, basically, because that mind is not bearing the fruit of the Spirit: compassion, love, prosperity, truth, and grace.

Our lives will always express what we think. So, the lessons we learn from the story are many. But, the most important lesson here, today, is that no matter what the parent (metaphorically Source or God) always wants to give us our wishes, and, also, rewards good decisions!

“As One of Your Servants!” #addiction #prodigalson #forgiveness #whatstrending #hittingbottom #spiritualliving

By midlife, almost everyone has had the divine pleasure of having an addict somewhere in his/her life. It’s no fun—not at all! Addiction is one of the hardest struggles in life, actually, more for those who are around the addict, than the one struggling with the problem; especially, when is the parent of an addict.

I have a few addicts in my family and grew up with one, as well. So, unlearning how to be a codependent was my challenge in life. I, still, catch myself mixed up in someone else’s problems and have to step back. We can all learn a lesson about addiction from a simple story in the Christian bible. I’m going to tell the story as if it were happening today:

The wealthy owner of a large manufacturing company has two children, a daughter and a son. Her husband died, so the mother has many servants helping with the children, who are now older teenagers and able to do many things on their own, including help out with the housework and tend to some of the work at the factory. The eldest of the two children decides she wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps and asks for a position at the company, which she does with great care and expertise.

The younger of the two children, with a little investigative work, discovers that he has a trust fund and the funds have become available to him at the age of eighteen for one million dollars. He tells his mother that, instead of working for the company, I want to take my inheritance and go see the world. Without any argument, the son leaves. For three years he doesn’t contact his mother or his sister. They don’t even know if he is alive.

The youngest son uses all of his money traveling and drinking and buying extravagant gifts for men and women, because he wanted to indulge in every part of life. He ends up depleting his entire inheritance at the end of two years and finds himself in South Africa having no money to eat. He steals a piece of fruit and ends up in jail, where he has to clean pigpens for one entire year. The food he eats there is what the jailer gives to feed the pigs.

Everyday the younger son finds himself dreaming about home. But, he can’t imagine his mother forgiving him for wasting a million dollars. He thinks, even the servants at my mother’s home have more than I do. I will go back to her and tell her I will work as a servant for her, because I don’t deserve to be her son.

So, after he pays his dues and gets out of jail, he works very hard to get a job on a freight ship where he can return home. He doesn’t even have enough money to get from the seaport to his home, so he hitchhikes. When a strange car pulls up in front of his mother’s mansion, the servants become suspicious. They all grab their guns and go to the front door, waiting for the unexpected visitor.

When the servants discover it is the youngest child, now bearded and with long, dirty hair, they embrace him and tend to his every needs. The head servant immediately calls the mother, who rushes home to see her lost son, whom, at this point, she thought was dead. The mother is so happy to see her son that she invites all of her son’s old friends and her own relatives to the house for a party that evening, sparing no expense.

When the elder of the two children comes home from a hard day of work at the factory, the party has already commenced. She asks one of the servants why the mother is throwing a party. The servant responds, “Your brother has come home!”

What I want you do today, is think about two things: 1). What would you do if you were the sister and how would you feel about your brother’s return? 2). What would you do if you were the mother? You are also welcome to respond on my blog site or on Facebook, if you like.

Tomorrow, I’ll discuss both.

What to Do After You Get Released from THE BETTY FORD! #wholenewyou #addiction #12steps #the13thstep #relationshipadvice #breakups #whatstrending

What to Do After You Get Released from THE BETTY FORD!
  1. Take a shower.
  2. Remember all the things you did before you got to the Betty Ford and hope you get to do them all over again—SOBER!
  3. Pretend you’re happy a lot. Maybe someday you’ll be! It’s your choice.
  4. Get a pet. Learn to take care of someone else with diligence. Watch how much that pet will love your care and tenderness! Then, know that the child in you will feel that same love for this new adult you’re becoming, who actually has become aware of his/her body, health, and the welfare of others.
  5. Take time to INTEND your day. Every morning, before you rush into your life, start with an intention in which you can actually complete and believe. Make it something simple: “I know that I am made of love, so everyone I meet today I will greet with kindness!”
  6. Love flows were rosemary grows. Have you ever smelled fresh rosemary? Rosemary is so fragrant and lovely. Everything that touches it, remembers its beauty. Be like rosemary. Leave that beautiful part of you everywhere you go.
  7. Finally, absolutely know, that as a human being, you are never finished until you take your last breath on this earth. So, today is a fresh start with new chances to be all that you want to be–TODAY!

“Girlfriend of Bill” #alanon #recovery #addiction

A friend of mine, Karen Nagy, wrote a very important book: Girlfriend of Bill: 12 Things You need to Know about Dating Someone in Recovery. I spent many days looking at the book, as it sat next to my bed in my cue. Even though I’m not a girl, I felt as though some instinct nudged me to read it. I actually didn’t even know that it dealt with a problem I just began to resolve in my mind. I recently released a budding relationship, because of a Meth addiction that I was unaware of. So, the content was important.

If you had never heard of the phrase “Friend of Bill,” alcoholics use it to keep anonymity at parties and social gatherings, while revealing their proclivity to addiction. As long as I have been dealing with addiction in my family and with clients, I had never heard someone speak this phrase, or it fell under the radar, where it belonged. In fact, I had to make a great distinction, of late, between helping addicts and befriending and dating them.

I had this amazing pal Kati (name changed to protect her) for ten years. We spoke every day, walked our dogs together, shared our problems, and knew everything about each other. But, what I didn’t know, was that, one day, she would simply disappear from my life without even a word. The reason she left, I heard years later, was because she began drinking again after 20 years sober.

The guy I mentioned at the top of this Discovery also disappeared for a week. In fact, disappearing and avoiding is something you can expect from an addict, usually in the early stages of getting sober. However, when an addict relapses, he or she must go back to Day One again, and again… and again! One of my dearest friends in the world is sober 18 years. I call him my brother. My family calls him a brother. My mother calls him a son. Yet, in the many years of our friendship, the one thing I’m absolutely sure of about addiction is: No matter how much a person tries to be sober with not drinking or using a drug, the psychology of an addict stays the same.

What Ms. Nagy does in this book is help you learn the language and mental temperament of an addictive person. Her technique is spot on, because she uses her own revelations, while dating an addict, to prove her point. I feel this book could be a great help to many people. You can count on one of twelve adults being an addict. When I use this term addict, it includes all people in 12 Steps, sober or in their addiction.

Friends of Bill are all around you, especially in certain social pockets. You are likely to have dated one, married one, or have a child or friend who is one. If you can get this book into the hands of someone who may be dealing with relating to someone as this, it would be a great gift.

Betting on a Winner #addiction #datingaddicts

This discovery is dedicated to “the fixer” in all of us. One never knows just how much of a sap he is about thinking he could FIX the world or CHANGE people, until he decides that the house that is 40K less and is a fixer-upper, would be better to buy than the one that is already finished and pristine. Or, when she decides that the dude that is disheveled and has a few minor problems could be the perfect person IF he she could just get her “fixing” hands on him. For me, the house would probably end up a money pit. For a professional, perhaps, not. But, when it comes to fixing another person, this is where we have to say a huge NO! Repeat it after me: NO, NO, and HELL NO!

I watched a movie last night in the comedy list of Netflix called “Thanks for Sharing.” The movie was no more a comedy than an egg comes from a cow. I felt beaten up with emotion after the movie concluded. The story was about five addicts and their partners or friends. The message of the entire story was more for the addict to keep his/her chin up. My personal take was: In relationships, when you just begin one and you discover the prospective partner is an addict, run… run far and fast. You can do better.

Some of my best friends and relatives are recovering addicts. I have asked them the same question about dating someone who is an addict. Their advice is the same: Run!

Even an addict who is completely immersed in the program knows how much dedication it takes to live in sobriety. He also knows how much selfishness it takes to deal with her shit and have a relationship at the same time. Sometimes, you can’t have both and be sober. You must choose sobriety over the person (people) you love; otherwise, you’ll lose everything. So, with addiction comes much-needed selfishness. That selfishness, often turns into narcissism, which is nobody’s friend.

So, if you think that you can fix someone who appears to be the best candidate for a loving relationship you have seen in a long time, and you realize this person is dealing with addiction, just gently take yourself out of the situation as soon you can. You will save yourself much distress and pain.

Recently, I dated a man whom I had no idea was struggling with addiction to crystal meth. He told me he was going to AA, so I thought his problem was with alcohol, so I continued seeing him. After we professed love, we prayed together, did spiritual growing exercises together, he just disappeared for two weeks.

My pain went deep, because I was taken so unaware… Even more so, I was embarrassed, because I doted over this man to everyone I knew. He was so wonderful in all ways: successful businessman, spiritual, loving, attentive, funny, and sexy. What scared me about the situation was how blindsided I was to this particular addictive behavior—meth addiction. I have dealt with plenty of addicts in my coaching and hypnotherapy business, but not so many in my personal life. I had never dated an addict, so I didn’t know what to look for. But as I retreat in my mind to the last few months, I did see signs.

First of all, the first couple of months in a relationship should not be difficult. I don’t care who says what about relationship, the honeymoon stage is a given. If two people immediately start having to “work” at relationship, something is systemically wrong. Take a step back from it and ask yourself three questions: 1) What is going on here? 2) How am I getting in the way of learning this lesson? and 3) What gift do I bring to this situation?

When I look back, my date and I immediately began to have situational issues that I thought seemed easy to handle. He got angry quickly, which is never a good sign in relationship. I should have known better just by that sign. But I didn’t realize his almost bipolar behavior was a telling sign of an addict still using or about to use.

Since I have moved through the healing stage, I have committed to asking a great many questions before I ever enter into dating seriously with anyone. As my dear friend and therapist said, “If a person can’t wait for three months to have sex, he isn’t worth it.” I don’t know if I could wait that long, but I understand the concept. Get to know the person before your heart enters into to intimacy. If you see signs of addiction or relationship is more difficult than it should be, cut your losses. You can save yourself a great deal of pain.

Changing Your Thoughts

Changing the neurology of the brain has eluded psychiatrists, psychologist, and therapists alike. Everyone seems to know what gives us brain disorders and causes us to mentally malfunction. But no one has a real theory on how to change the neurological behavior. So, we are left like a cancer patient with no treatment options.

We recognize that most mental disorders result in addictive thinking. This is a great way to begin your search for the most effective way to change the result of your habitual thoughts. If we can’t change the neurology of the brain, then the next best action to take is changing or redirecting the energy of the problem.

We may not know or be able to describe a practical theory of healing mental disorders, but studies have shown that some of the worst cases of addictive thought have been miraculously changed by one thing—a spiritual influence. For proof, we don’t have to travel too far to see how the “#Twelve-Step programs” around the world have proven this fact over and over again, by millions of people taking the first major step toward effective change—Having a power greater than ourselves. You don’t have to accept anyone’s idea of that higher power. You just need a greater power than you.

My belief is that accepting a higher power actually gets you into your own Higher Conscious Brain Power. If you make a conscious choice to say to yourself: “God, please help me with this addiction!” then, you have changed your addictive thought in that moment (the neurological pathway). So, the power of change may not be in the spirituality itself, but in the law of Spiritual Action, which is: “What is in mind, will respond in kind!” “Ask and you shall receive.” “Seek and you shall find (answers).” If you let one of these affirmations replace your old belief, you have made a conscious choice to change, which is a great first step to regaining your power.

Some skeptics say that one is weak if he/she accepts any help from the elusive higher power to help them in the process of change. However weak or not, the ones who have chosen this course of action are 60% more successful at changing addictive thought. These high numbers are hard to argue with. So, in answer to our question about changing old behavior, we might start with discovering what keeps us from our higher power or—a different way of thinking about that—from choosing for yourself a different thought process?

I had a great talk with a psychologist yesterday who also is a reverend at my church and has worked with addiction for fifty years. He told me the first step to repairing a life that has been malfunctioning as a result of addiction is to, first, deal with the empty space created by stopping the addiction. Trust me, you won’t have to look too far to see where you can spend your newly liberated energy. Most people recovering from addiction can easily see that relationships and work-related finances have greatly suffered.

The first step to changing the behavior in your mind is creating a diversion from the problem. If you don’t have time to think about a cigarette, you won’t smoke one. I can’t tell you how many smokers I have treated with hypnosis, who can go the entire work day (8-10 hours) without a cigarette, then smoke an entire pack at night while having nothing to do. If you’re bouncing on a fitness ball while watching television, I guarantee you won’t have enough oxygen to smoke a cigarette. If you knit while you watch television, your hands won’t be available to eat junk food.

If you focus on writing and reading more, attending classes, going to Meet-up groups for various activities, you will inevitably spend much less time thinking about the lack of relationship in your life.
