Why Are So Many of the World’s Icons Dying? #prince #spiritualadvice #michaeljackson #whitneyhouston #newthought

“I’m in shock!” the first post revealed, which included a sad face. I knew immediately someone had died, not just anyone, a famous icon. Then, as I read on, my friends—via Facebook—began to explain the story, concluding with the Nightly News and this morning’s web announcement about his drug overdose treatment.
Prince, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Karen Carpenter, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Andy Gibb, Bob Marley… In the past couple decades 47 young musicians have died before their fans expected. What is very interesting is how people react as if they actually knew the singer personally.
It appears that when artist’s work touches the heart of a human being, they connect with such a bond that they let their fragile hearts merge with someone—a safe someone who can’t hurt them—as if the artist knows them in an intimate way. The media constantly barraging us with their personal information doesn’t help our desire to connect in ways we probably should not. We continue to feel we are an integral of their personal lives, when we simply are not.
I am probably one of the very few people in the world that couldn’t even hum one of Prince’s songs. I was surprised when I heard a version of “Purple Rain,” and I didn’t even recognize the melody. This has allowed me to stand apart from the crowds and observe.
As the news spread faster than a gasoline fire in all of these cases, the grief came at us as large as an earthquake disaster. In fact, on the Nightly News, the first five minutes last night were about Prince. Ten minutes later we heard about the world’s devastating earthquakes and floods killing many in Texas. Again, I pause to observe the world and its peculiar behavior.
Even though I knew almost nothing about Prince, I was quick to spread the news to the first five people I talked to after I found out. I was shocked to hear the words coming out of my own mouth. My mother was the first. She shared with me how much she liked Prince.
“Really?” I asked. “What do you know about him?”
“Well, he was always so well dressed, and no one ever said anything bad about him. I mean he was never into any drugs or anything.”
We see in these icons what we want to see, I guess. If we need to have someone to admire, chide, or secretly love, we have these larger than life stars to depend on to sweep us away from our mundane lives.
We spend so much time wondering whom they marry, when they are arrested for traffic violations, caught up in arguing with a lover, or having a child? Does it really matter to our own lives? Or do we simply not have enough life to matter to ourselves?
Honestly, I believe we’ve invested in these artists because their music touched us, but mostly because we have not invested enough in our own lives. We fantasize about being them and having their lavish lives.
The reality is that our own lives seem miniscule in comparison. I guess I have been fortunate enough to have known or have been a practitioner to a few movie stars, sports icons, and singing divas. Trust me, their lives are much harder, much crazier, than you could imagine. Often they can’t sleep at night because they are afraid of disappointing millions. They have eating disorders because they can’t eat like normal people; otherwise they will get fat and lose their appeal. They can’t love and divorce like others, because public scrutiny will kill the very love they have been trying to get from the masses of people they cater to, but can never attain. Why, because the love of all of the people clapping for them will never be enough to fill the void.
You wonder why they turn to drugs. This is why?
Their lives are exactly like yours, however. Their problems are the same. They are simply magnified by social media and news reporters who need something to talk about, someone to make fun of, anyone to scrutinize for the next talk show.
Honestly, I’m tired of all of it. I’m going to focus in on what’s important today. I’m going to tend to my life and the lives of those who need my help.
