You, too, must keep watch! For you don't know when the master of the household will return--in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at daybreak.
We are advised by the Master Jesus in Mark 13:35 to keep a watchful eye and a spiritual ear attuned to the Divine in this passage of the New Testament.
Why would you supposed in this hour of world disruption and governmental upheaval that we are told to keep a watchful eye for the Master of the Household to Return? What metaphorically could this story be telling us in this season of our lives?
“The Master Returning” has long been thought of as Jesus returning to the earth as a person in the sky to collect his followers. But, I don’t think this passage is that simple, nor do I think that Jesus will return in the clouds. I believe that the message of Jesus will be revealed within authentic spiritual souls as the darkness settles around us.
When all of life is symbolic of light and dark, positive and negative, these days bring about a vast and tremendous reality of what is negative and what is positive for those who are keeping a watchful eye. We can also see around us those who are blinded by fear and the idea of a savior-type coming to protect them physically. We can see how easily many will be led astray from the Truth by the idea of some outside source intervening to help the World. Many will be fooled, but not those who understand the Truth.
The ones who listen in the silence to the direction of Spirit and are attuned to the Word of God that is within the pure heart—they know that the real measure of a human’s worth is his or her ability to stand at the precipice of evil and continue to believe that light will shine through them into the world.
We don’t falter when evil comes to stare us in the face, for we know that our spirits are housed in human bodies capable of many challenges and fear. No, still we do not acquiesce. Instead, we become beacons in the darkness. We hold on to our Divine Truth and believe that THROUGH US change will come.
