Sheldon, I’m Dying, but not Today!
I was watching “Private Practice” last night. Dr. Sheldon, a
psychiatrist, was undergoing radiation for prostate cancer with a woman who
intrigued him. She also was going through radiation treatment at the same time.
Sheldon began to fall for her during the seven-week process of meeting daily.
When things got close, she told Sheldon, her cancer was terminal. Sheldon
timidly ran from her and any intimacy. But later after some soul searching,
when he faced his own mortality, he decided to date her and love her for as
long as she was alive.
The story was intriguing enough for me to write about, not
because it was drama at its best, but because there was so much truth to it. We
really can’t love fully without facing our own mortality and also facing the
mortality of the person we love. Both lives are constantly in jeopardy of being
lost every moment of every day.
I’m not a pessimistic man. In fact, most people think of me
as a very optimistic person. But one of the ancient secret truths of Buddhism
is to imagine your own demise, down to your bones petrifying and becoming one
with the earth again. And with love and with any kind of idolizing, it is
recommended that you also see that same demise of the person you love or
idolize.
Why would any religion suggest such a morbid thing? The
truth is: if you have faced the worst that could happen; if you have faced the
ending, which every relationship has (either in leaving or in death); then it
is possible to give more to every day, to every minute, to every second of
loving.
