Is There a Deeper Healing Beneath Your Hurt?
Taizé is the style of worship practiced by the ecumenical
Taizé community in France, characterized by the repetitive singing of simple
harmonized tunes, interspersed with readings, prayers, and periods of silence.
I went to the service this evening at Center of Spiritual Living Nashville,
where I normally attend church. My friend Rev. Donna Michael asked me to
participate as a singer and to ring a few bells and sound a crystal, singing
bowl.
All was beautiful and flowing as a unified prayer. Then we
got to the part of the service when everyone has an opportunity to share what’s
on his/her heart. At the end of each person’s prayer, the entire community
sings, “Your prayer is my prayer too.”
About one third of the church had gone up to the podium,
prayed a prayer and lit a candle. Then the feeling in my chest became heavy. I
felt my right foot wanting to move before this chance was over. Should I ask
for prayer or was it just a selfish thing to do on my part? Or was I just
embarrassed to share what was on my heart because it felt like a failure?
I didn’t let the strivings of my deductive brain get too
far, because I was way too swept up in the spirit to be deprived of the
blessing of so many uniquely prayerful hearts. I had been convicted in my own heart
to go and pray.
I stood behind the minister of the church waiting for my
turn. It looked as though I was going to be the last to pray, which made me
feel a little more uncomfortable. But Rev. Mitch must have known I needed
encouragement, because he patted my shoulder and something clicked in me as I
heard the scripture in my heart “be still and know that I am God.”
Before I had time to figure out what to say, the mike was in
front of my mouth. “I am feeling like I need to share with my spiritual family
what is going on in my life, so that you can pray with me. My partner moved out
on Sunday. And my prayer is that without anger, I could let his heart fly to
the light, freely finding what he needs to prosper in all ways.” Then came the
hardest part. Sharing what I needed. “And for my own heart. That it may heal
too. That I may authentically let it rest and give it time for rebirth.”
The tears that welled in my eyes didn’t emerge until I sat
back down in my chair on the pulpit. Suddenly, my faced was soaked and there
were no tissues to be found. It didn’t matter. I realized in that moment that
something way deep wasn’t healed in my heart, and I needed to let it rise in
the light of love. As I did, the healing went deeper. I felt the hand of the
person next to me roll over my shoulder and a safe and secure warmth swept over
my body.
When all the tears were shed, I had become a different man.
I don’t know why tears and being venerable are important, but they simply are.
To be a part of the whole, you must bear your heart and soul sometimes, so that
those who are stronger can carry your burden.
It is the hardest lesson to learn in life, but a necessary
one.
