The Voices in Our Minds

The Voices in Our Minds

I parked at a Sheraton hotel for a couple hours. When I came back for my car, I wondered how much the parking fee would be. There were no fees posted anywhere. As I got into my car, I noticed that a man was getting into his Mercedes as I was getting into my car. I followed the Mercedes down to the exit. It was late at night. The parking lot was automated. There was a credit card machine at the exit. When the man before me paid, the exit lever raised, and his car quickly slipped out. The lever stayed in the raised position.

A voice in my head said, “Just Go!”

Before I even had a chance to argue with the voice, I pulled forward. Much to my dismay, the wooden parking lever crashed down on the top of my car and banged its way to my trunk until I exited completely. At the end of the exit was a parking attendant standing there shaking his head.

I can’t tell you why I did what I did. This was an augmented time in life I just listened to one of those voices in my mind that told me the wrong thing to do. It was so loud and urgent that it literally pushed my foot on the gas pedal, before reasoning took over. Let me tell you, my friends, falling into an unreasonable situation is not something that happens to me often. Reason almost always wins in my life. So, that night was a big lesson.

We all have plenty of voices in our minds talking, sometimes simultaneously. No, you are not schizophrenic if you hear voices in your mind. We all do. We hear the voice of our consciousness. We hear the voice of deduction. Sometimes we hear the voice of the past, or a person from the past. We hear law. We hear temptation. We hear things that might loop in our minds because we have been told those things over and over again until it becomes rote for us to think them.

As long as you are not slipping from knowing who you are, you are not schizophrenic. If you know your name and not think that each individual thought is a person or personality, and if you’re not losing time when you are in these modes, then you are just a normal Joe or Josephine with a bunch of thoughts you have to sort through. The latest term to call these mental ramblings is an “internal family of thoughts.” This means that each individual thought may be a part of you or a part of your personality. These parts may try to comfort, protect or hurt you, depending on how they were processed originally.

Fortunately, hypnosis and parts therapy are working hand in hand to help uncover the mysteries of these parts. With guidance, most of us can make sense of each part and have control over, or at the very least, have access to the part enough to govern it.

In my case that night, I was ambushed, for sure. I don’t even remember what part of me busted through the automated parking attendant. Perhaps, it was the bad boy, who never gets out of the locked and bolted jail cell. He saw the perfect exit and ran.

I happened to be lucky that night. I think the valet wasn’t sure exactly what he had witnessed, when I got out of my car and said, “Did your machine damage my car?”

He quietly looked at the roof and said, “I think there may be a little smudge in the paint, but that’s it.”

It didn’t occur to me to offer to pay him as if I had forgotten or gotten confuse, because, then, all I could think about was getting busted for not paying, and I also wondered how the seeds of my misdeed reined what kind of wrath on my car.

So, I drove away. Parked about a block away and assessed the car. There was no damage at all. I looked for flashing police car lights the entire ride home. None followed.

What I learned was that I had to forgive myself: otherwise, I would just be living with the guilt. Going back and paying would have possibly amplified the problem, so I just let it be my personal lesson for the evening. Bo meets Part One—Jail Bird.
