Learned Helplessness #psychology #behaviormodification #spirituality #bodyandmind

If a tiger is put in a cage that is only large enough for it to walk in small circles, for two years, even if he gets put into a huge environment, the tiger is likely to only walk in those same small circles, thereafter. This behavior is called “learned helplessness.”
From Wikipedia: Learned helplessness is behavior typical of an organism (human or animal) that has endured repeated painful or otherwise adverse stimuli, which it was unable to escape or avoid. After such experience, the organism often fails to learn to escape in new situations where such behavior would be effective.
We can see this behavior in humans who have suffered traumatic events as children that seem to give up trying when faced with even the greatest of chances to better themselves. They self-sabotage and commit to less because their minds won’t let them outside of the old paradigm of confinement.
With this being said, how do we change the state of avoidance and belief from a situation that may have caused learned helplessness in our own lives?
I had a recent event in my own life that brought about a feeling of wanting to give up and not try. The event triggered the worst parts of my ego. It brought up insecurity, the need to be perfect to get love, and also pushed me into a dark and scary place.
I clearly needed to get help quickly, otherwise, I would have sunk even deeper into a depression, I’m sure. This, to me, was clearly a PTSD event that brought back some serious, old feelings of insecurity.
I was told that I did something wrong, when I didn’t believe I had. This was one person’s perception, but it was someone important to me. Nonetheless, I let his judgment of a situation cloud my entire mind, until I was curled up in my bed, holding my heart and asking for help from God.
In my quiet, I heard a kind voice say to me, “I have already helped you. I have given you the keys to the kingdom, to your creative mind. I have given you back the power that was stolen from you. USE IT!”
I remembered the scripture in the Bible where Jesus said, “Physician, heal yourself!” And I actually understood it was up to me to change my helplessness into power.
I brought myself back to the time when I was hiding in the closet as a child, one of the few places as a young kid that I felt safe. I remembered that little boy who experienced helplessness and the feeling of being unloved. Those exact feelings as a child mirrored what I felt in that moment. What I faced as an adult was nothing compared to the abuse of my childhood, but nonetheless, I had the same feelings of wanting to give up and quit. No matter how hard I tried, I felt unloved and wrong in the current situation. So, instead of facing my life, I hid in my closet. In this case, it was under my covers in my bed.
My prayer was simple, but effective, when I got the courage to finally pray it:
“I know that God is all in all; in the immensity of the universe and in the smallest memories of my past. The energy of love and creativity exists in God and has been passed to me as a child of the Creator. I firmly accept this challenge to be the man God created me to be. I reject the premise of old that would say that I am less than, not good enough, or my light is not bright enough for the world. I am all that God has made me and much more than I can imagine.
“What would I be without this old, negative thought that I am “not enough?” Would I be more powerful, unlimited in my resource, and flow in divine prosperity? Indeed, I would. So, I lift my eyes unto the source of all good and trust that I c0-abide as love, in love, and am always expressing as love. This I believe to be true about my current situation, as I face it as an adult, not as a hurt, young child.”

Psychology: The Science of Mind #self-discovery #InfiniteMind #spiritualadvice #SOM

In The Science of Mind we read: “…it is not the brain (of man) that does the thinking, for if the brain could think, it would keep on thinking when removed from the body. Yet, without a brain, a man could not think, which proves that something behind the brain uses it as an instrument. Man does think, so behind the brain there must be a Thinker. But where is the Thinker?”

Who doesn’t read the above and wonder about the difference between the physical brain and the Mind? I know, I certainly do. My first perceptions of this reality came when I realized I was talking to myself, or reasoning with myself. I thought, who is speaking to whom?
At this point, I realized that there was, quite possibly, a family of thinkers in my own brain. Wondering if I was sane or crazy, I asked a therapist friend of mine about this psychological conundrum. It turns that there is a science in psychology devoted primarily to this subject called IFS (Internal Family Systems), led by Dr. Richard Schwartz, Ph. D.

The theory behind IFS is that characters develop in our minds under certain circumstances—usually traumatic ones. These characters hold certain beliefs about our lives and either protect us, guard us from our own bad memories, or become heroes for us. (This entire scenario is not to be confused with multiple personalities, the mental illness. What I speak about is actually quite normal. With multiple personalities, usually one character is predominant and the mentally disabled person usually loses time when in that particular personality.)

The only reason I bring up IFS is because for characters to exist in the mind, there must be a Source that is not the physical brain to function in a way that actually communicates with itself. The real challenge and wonder of the Science of Mind is that by “recognizing the mind and brain are separate, and that the mind governs the brain,” we actually can remodel our thinking. This is the premise on which the science of psychology is based.

So, to sum up, the only way we can study our own minds and change our beliefs in ourselves is to, first, consider that we have One Mind that is greater than the human brain and its autonomic functions. This One Mind is Cause. From this, we can begin to observe ourselves and make changes, or edits to the function of the physical brain. Alas, mental health may emerge. Let’s hope so!

Tucked Beneath Your Denial! #denial #whatstrending #spiritualgrowth #psychology

I have a friend who used to walk around everyday, all the time, smiling and perky. Sometimes I just want to slap her and say, “Really? Are you always this happy? Do you wake up this way? Isn’t there anything in your life that brings you down?”

One time, I actually got the nerve to ask. Her reply, “I love life! I wake up everyday like a kid on Christmas morning. I just can’t wait to see what life will bring me.” I just shook my head and thought, I wonder what’s underneath all that denial. I’m certain I don’t want to be there when the large bolder gets rolled away.

As she stayed friends with me until her death, I watched and waited. She had a boyfriend for whom she divorced her husband of twenty years. He was moving to Nashville to live with her. They had been dating and in love for two years by this time.

When he moved in, he had an anger problem that unraveled within months. One day, he got so angry that he pushed her down the steps. This led her to, of course, kick him out and break up. It also led her to therapy.

After the first few weeks of going through the pain of falling down the steps and the hurt of a break-up, the therapist began to help her remove the blocks (the denial) to her anger. The pain was so deep and so thick that when she would discuss it with me, I could only take it in doses. She was mad at almost everyone in her life, especially her family.

Eventually, she wound up with stage four colon cancer, (I’d assume from all of the pent-up rage). The cancer surged through her body in one year and consumed her life.

I tell this story, because this was one of my best friends in the world. I watched as if this lesson was for me. How much anger did I have hidden? What exactly would I do with those feelings when I found them? I decided to go to therapy and begin the search.

What I discovered was that behind each layer of denial was something painful. And, when I dealt with whatever issue I had, the lessons became deeper and richer. One by one, step-by-step, as I unloaded the hidden grief, I felt lighter and less burdened.

Maybe I couldn’t smile and be a bright beacon 24-7 to all of my friends and family. But I was being authentic, which was way more important for anyone to see. Each lesson I learned, ultimately, became the building blocks that secured the mainframe of my own sanity and made me the life coach I am today.

Far From Over How Deep Is Your Wound? #wholenewyou #relationshipadvice #breakups #whatstrending

In most of our lives we go through times of incredible change, no matter if we want to or not. Usually, we have some sort of AHA moment, a great epiphany, perhaps. Then, we let go of whatever it is we had been struggling with. However, if you have lived long enough as a spiritual seeker and working on your own humanity, psychologically; you know that where there is one layer of struggle, there is usually another, and another, and yet even another.
I have never met anyone who hasn’t had numerous healings from the say instance in his/her life. Healing is a process. Just because you made amends or forgiven someone, doesn’t mean that resentment isn’t still lingering in the inner recesses of your mind. A deeper healing may be on its way, using someone or something completely different from the original source of pain.

I once had a dear friend who had struggled with women and relationships, to the point where he was about to give up. He never seemed to be able to settle into a relationship without major struggle. He was jealous and needed way more intimacy than any one woman could give him, which led him to confusion and a bad temper. Eventually the relationships would end tumultuously.

After every relationship, as good life coaches and therapists do with each other when they just happen to be best friends; we would always decompress with each other. We would share what we learned from every situation. With his relationship situations, because they were as a result from Anxious Attachment Issues from birth, his lessons were like chipping away at Antarctica. Honestly, I never thought he would get through the thick layer of icy cold resistance to love that kept him from finding a real relationship.

Alas, after many years of digging through the rubble to find solace from yoga, meditation, and weeks away at silent retreats, I believe he has finally gotten to a place where he can have a normal relationship. He got married a few months ago.

I share this story because, as “humans being” we simply never stop learning on this earth plain. If you think you are finished, think again. However, to temper that statement, just because you are still in your third year of residency to be a physician, doesn’t mean that you can’t teach your younger students and begin heal patients. As we become masters at being human, we can, also, still use our gifts that we have learned along the continuous path of psychological and spiritual schooling, which has definitely been directed right from Source!

What Is Fired Together, Is Wired Together #neuralpathways #psychology #anxiety #divorce

I had a dream about a time when I was seven or eight. All of my siblings went to the local swimming hole, but I felt sick and stayed home. However, my mother, with a crisp dollar bill, coerced me to walk to a candy store that was about a 1/2 mile away. Instead of feeling sick, suddenly, I felt better. All I could think of for the entire hour it took to walk to the store, choose my goodies, and then walk home alone was how lucky I was to have stayed home and had been the recipient of that one dollar bill. (In 1968, one dollar was a lot of money to buy a great deal of junk for a child.)

When I returned home, my mother and all of her belongings were gone from the home. She had left my father. I suddenly realized why she wanted me away from the home. Internally, I had never completely understood what I had felt in that moment had why it had impacted my entire life. Yes, I realized it affected my relationship paradigm. But, what I didn’t know was something even simpler and ultimately physical: The junk and the candy I had eaten had caused me to feel sick to my stomach, as did the situation. So, as a result, whenever I get nervous about rejection or abandonment of any kind, my stomach aches, as if it were that same moment forty years ago.

I called a psychologist friend of mine and asked if he knew of any techniques to disengage such a physical response to an old emotion. He said, he wanted to think on it, but his first impression was: what is fired together is wired together. In other words, the brain synapse had already been fused, and good luck with disengaging from the emotion or the feeling, which has been my life quest!

As a clinical hypnotherapist, for almost twenty-five years, I sat across from thousands of clients who felt similar feelings about food, relationships, abandonment, and ultimately PTSD moments like mine. As I led each of them through techniques (mostly hypnotic), most clients felt some relief. But, the truth about any technique that distorts or changes the pathway of a neural pathway firing, is that you must continue to do these techniques every time you have the feeling. Otherwise, the body acts as if you have felt this emotion or physical pain for the first time. It’s an autonomic response that fires even before your cognitive mind knows what has happened.

In some ways, knowing that the physical feeling and the emotional feeling are automatic and caused from an old scenario does help me to put my current situation and feelings into perspective. If you can step away from any feeling you have and observe it and your body, you always have a bigger opportunity to make change.

I have been researching this, lately, so, keep reading the blog, because I’m likely to come up with something that will help even more than hypnosis. Spirit would not have us stay emotionally helpless for our entire lives. There is an answer out there. If anyone of my readers has a good suggestion, let me know. I’d be happy to share.

How Uncomfortable Are You Willing to Get to Learn Something? #theedge #psychology #yourcomfortzone #spiritualgrowth

Once, while in my forties, I dated a 19-year-old boy to experience what it would feel like to be young again. After a few weeks of bumps and bruises from doing things I simply would have never done without someone 20 years younger goading me, I finally, learned my lesson and let go of the relationship. Two weeks after, that same teenager stole his best friend’s car, and I never heard from him again.

Wikihow.com says there are 6 steps to getting out of your comfort zone:
  1. Make a fool of yourself;
  2. Know that the worst thing that could happen when you try something new is that you might fail;
  3. Face your fears;
  4. Become comfortable with taking risks;
  5. Most of our greatest lessons are learned by either failing or taking risks; and
  6. Enjoy the unknown.
I think I may have accomplished all six steps with one month of dating Harry!

Once, I opened my heart to date again after a long stint of fear about getting hurt. (Yes, most of everyone’s hardest lessons are firmly grounded in relationship.) My goal was to forget about the future and simply feel the present without any fear. I felt as if I was a teenager again, experiencing love for the first time. The result, three months later, when the guy decided that he wanted to see other people, was pain that I also hadn’t experienced since my twenties.

Learning lessons takes leaping into the present with all of your body and mind, without regard for the result. However, most often, the end result is painful. At least, in my experience it has been.

Would I change one step that I took for the valuable lessons I had learned? One thing I know for sure about the last dating experience is that I have the capacity to love grandly, which I really didn’t think was in my heart. When the right person comes along, I’ll know—as I take my time getting to know him—that I have within me the tools to commit, cherish, and love greater than I ever had before.

I believe we can use the tools of Getting Out of Our Comfort Zone in all areas of our lives. In business, my risk of moving to a new city, changing businesses, and starting over to pursue my passions has been like living on the precipice of the highest mountain. Though the view is amazing, sometimes fear and trepidation happen when it rains and the wind blows a little too fiercely. Yet, I wouldn’t change one thing about the present. I know what it feels like to live in the precious NOW everyday.

For some who live in fear and anxiety daily, living life in an unchanging world can bring a “sense” of security. But, no one is really safe from an ever-changing world. Change is all around us. The only thing that doesn’t change is change itself. So, you might as well climb out on a limb today and try something new you’ve always wanted to do. Time is a passin’, my friend!

Change-Blindness What Is Consciousness? #changeblindness #psychology #consciousness #depakchopra

Depak Chopra says that consciousness is “the composite of all of the things we pay attention to in life.” In other words, we are only conscious of the parts of our life on which we place our active attention. So, much of life—most of life—is going by without us even noticing.

In Scienceblog.com, we learn that vision researchers thought that seeing really meant making pictures in the brain—by building detailed internal representations of the world and comparing them over time. “We don't store elaborate pictures in short-term memory,” Scientist Daniel Dennett says, “because it isn't necessary and would take up valuable computing (brain) power. Rather, we log what has changed and assume the rest has stayed the same.”

This phenomenon is called “Change Blindness.” Picture the following: You walk across a city street when a stranger asks you for directions. While you're talking to him, two men pass between you carrying a mirror. When you've finished, the stranger informs you that you've just taken part in a psychology experiment. You’re told that the man who initially approached you walked off behind the door, leaving a different guy in his place. The first man now comes up to join you. Looking at the two men standing side by side, you notice that the two are of different height and build, are dressed differently, have different haircuts and different voices.

So, with little explanation, you can clearly see that we notice little in our lives. Even worse, if our attention is on something else, such as our typing a text on our cell phone while driving, we may miss the unexpected passenger running across the busy highway. Researcher say that 50% of traffic deaths are caused by not paying attention.

Building a rich life takes painting a rich and beautiful consciousness. Every morning, when I walk my dog, I take notice of the sky, the vastness of the universe, the trees and flowers that are in bloom, and anything else that may have changed around me. I open my eyes and mind to more than just what is important to see. I look for the ever-changing greatness of life around me. This kind of small act, on your part, can alter the entire paradigm of your life, everyday. When you take your consciousness out of the smallness of a task or a duty, you build a picture in your mind that has more actual salient features and beauty than the mundane task at hand.

Even if science proves that we don’t actually see anything around us, our consciousness certainly plays a vast role in our daily outlook. So, we must spend some of our conscious life building a beautiful picture, a Kodak moment, so that our minds can ferret out the negativity and hold on to that which we actually want to see around us.
