Why Do You Keep Trying to Look Like the Image of Yourself? #relationshipadvice #spiritualadvice #personalpower #newthought

Maxwell Maltz, a famous author (Psycho-Cybernetics) and American plastic surgeon often spoke about the difference between making changes to the body and the insurgence of negative thoughts that would follow. These thoughts would almost always be contrary to how one would look inside as compared to how he or she appeared outside, even after major plastic surgery. So, how do we look authentic inside and out?
As most people do during middle age, I often struggled with a few pounds around the waist. This happens mostly in the winter (even though I live in Florida), because the swimming pool is too cold to do my daily ritual of 20-30 laps. When I’m swimming, I look at myself in the mirror and see a body that brings a feeling of pride. When I simply do my gym workout without the swimming, I stand on the scale and think: What the hell? How do I keep gaining weight? This just doesn’t make sense. (Even though I know I gained the weight because my eating and energetic output are not balanced.)
What’s happening on the outside has to mirror something that is in my mind, because nothing can make its way to our life unless it has already presented in your mind—absolutely nothing. So, during the winter, what could possibly be plaguing my mind enough for me to dicker with myself about my weight and the way I look?
Maxwell Maltz’s study began after he had operated on a series of people who had terrible birth defects or had been in accidents that caused major face reconstruction. He noticed that after a person had lived his or her entire life with a birth defect (especially on the face), that even after his or her face looked beautiful, peering in the mirror was difficult. The patients would see the old face, not the beautiful new face. Perhaps this is the case with people who have had bariatric surgery for weight loss, as well. Very often they end up gaining back much of the weight they initially lost. Below is a quote from one such bariatric patient with Lapband:
The fact is, the problem was never IN our stomachs, it was somewhere else within us: Our heads, our hearts, our self-esteem maybe. The band only helps us accomplish the PHYSICAL part of whatever our problem is that got us fat in the first place. It can ONLY control how much food you put in your body; it does NOT choose WHAT you put in your body. (http://www.bariatric-surgery-source.com)
The problem is never in the ways we try to appear different, ever! The issue about our looks is in our minds. If we don’t clear the issues from the past, the stressors, the negative thoughts that make you feel not good enough, not pretty enough, and not skinny enough is what must be worked on in tandem with any kind of weight loss or plastic surgery you try.
Dr. Maltz used hypnotherapy to help change the problems in the mind with great success. I have been a certified Clinical Hypnosis Practitioner for 25 years and have seen amazing results for people who changing the mind to change the story in their bodies. Learned Helplessness #psychology #behaviormodification #spirituality #bodyandmind

If a tiger is put in a cage that is only large enough for it to walk in small circles, for two years, even if he gets put into a huge environment, the tiger is likely to only walk in those same small circles, thereafter. This behavior is called “learned helplessness.”
From Wikipedia: Learned helplessness is behavior typical of an organism (human or animal) that has endured repeated painful or otherwise adverse stimuli, which it was unable to escape or avoid. After such experience, the organism often fails to learn to escape in new situations where such behavior would be effective.
We can see this behavior in humans who have suffered traumatic events as children that seem to give up trying when faced with even the greatest of chances to better themselves. They self-sabotage and commit to less because their minds won’t let them outside of the old paradigm of confinement.
With this being said, how do we change the state of avoidance and belief from a situation that may have caused learned helplessness in our own lives?
I had a recent event in my own life that brought about a feeling of wanting to give up and not try. The event triggered the worst parts of my ego. It brought up insecurity, the need to be perfect to get love, and also pushed me into a dark and scary place.
I clearly needed to get help quickly, otherwise, I would have sunk even deeper into a depression, I’m sure. This, to me, was clearly a PTSD event that brought back some serious, old feelings of insecurity.
I was told that I did something wrong, when I didn’t believe I had. This was one person’s perception, but it was someone important to me. Nonetheless, I let his judgment of a situation cloud my entire mind, until I was curled up in my bed, holding my heart and asking for help from God.
In my quiet, I heard a kind voice say to me, “I have already helped you. I have given you the keys to the kingdom, to your creative mind. I have given you back the power that was stolen from you. USE IT!”
I remembered the scripture in the Bible where Jesus said, “Physician, heal yourself!” And I actually understood it was up to me to change my helplessness into power.
I brought myself back to the time when I was hiding in the closet as a child, one of the few places as a young kid that I felt safe. I remembered that little boy who experienced helplessness and the feeling of being unloved. Those exact feelings as a child mirrored what I felt in that moment. What I faced as an adult was nothing compared to the abuse of my childhood, but nonetheless, I had the same feelings of wanting to give up and quit. No matter how hard I tried, I felt unloved and wrong in the current situation. So, instead of facing my life, I hid in my closet. In this case, it was under my covers in my bed.
My prayer was simple, but effective, when I got the courage to finally pray it:
“I know that God is all in all; in the immensity of the universe and in the smallest memories of my past. The energy of love and creativity exists in God and has been passed to me as a child of the Creator. I firmly accept this challenge to be the man God created me to be. I reject the premise of old that would say that I am less than, not good enough, or my light is not bright enough for the world. I am all that God has made me and much more than I can imagine.
“What would I be without this old, negative thought that I am “not enough?” Would I be more powerful, unlimited in my resource, and flow in divine prosperity? Indeed, I would. So, I lift my eyes unto the source of all good and trust that I c0-abide as love, in love, and am always expressing as love. This I believe to be true about my current situation, as I face it as an adult, not as a hurt, young child.”

Life Is a Tapestry #failure #synchronicity #findingpeace #spirituality #psychology

Sometimes, fate, Spirit, life—whatever you want to call it—leads us to the most interesting people. I find that when I’m most tempted to bail out of a situation, but force myself to do it anyway, I am always faced with one of those synchronistic moments that suggests that life is a finely woven tapestry. Last night was one of those moments.
I met a guy in my Spanish as a second language Meetup group who was really nice and funny. His family is Spanish and Italian. They speak only Spanish at home, but he was born in the U.S. and speaks English otherwise. He never really took the time to learn the basic tenets of Spanish. We decided to hang out because he is about at the same level of understanding as I. In fact, we can both teach each other.
Last night we decided to get some pizza at Hollywood beach for his 29th birthday. We brought a blanket, a bottle of wine, and my bluetooth speaker so we could listen to some soft jazz. The night was warm and the moon full. The evening was amazing and could not have been more beautiful. However, just before I was about to leave, I had the feeling I just wanted to sleep. I had no desire to go at all. Still, for some reason, I did not cancel—mostly because it was my friend’s birthday, and I didn’t want to ruin his evening.
As he gets in the car, we begin to chat both in English and Spanish, mostly in Spanish. I thought, ah, this is why I’m here. I really do enjoy learning to speak in another language. A fantastic feeling of accomplishment happens when I find myself immersed in Spanish culture through the language.
As we began to share about our lives, he shared about his ex, which still seemed to sting, I could tell. He told me stories that sounded familiar, as we all have experienced people who care less for us than we do for them; we have all had people try to control us; and we have had people use us. I was compassionate to all of the above.
However, at the end of the story, he began to describe his ex. Incredulously, the only person he had ever cared for in his entire life happened to be the first guy I dated when I moved to Florida. I have dated three guys since I have been here for no more than three months each and broke up for much the same reason. None wasn’t the right one. But, what are the friggin’ odds of one of those 3 guys being his ex?
I look forward, now, to see the lesson behind all of this.

What Is PTG? #posttraumaticgrowth #PTSD #Scienceofmind #psychology #spiritualadvice

Most people have heard of—or experienced—PTSD: Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. A simple definition of PTSD would be a traumatic incident that happened during one’s childhood or life, may inhibit psychological growth and often causes severe depression, especially when triggered with a similar situation.
PTG, however, is positive change experienced as a result of the struggle with a major life crisis or a traumatic event. Although the University of North Carolina at Charlotte has recently coined the term posttraumatic growth, the idea that human beings can be changed by their encounters with life challenges—sometimes in radically positive ways—is not new. In fact, these kinds of positive changes have been tracked for years.
Posttraumatic growth tends to occur in five general areas. Sometimes people who face major life crises:
  1. Could develop a sense that new opportunities have emerged from the struggle, opening up possibilities that were not present before;
  2. Experience a change in relationships with others. They can also experience an increased sense of connection to others who have suffered in a similar way;
  3. May have an increased sense of their own strength;
  4. Develop a greater appreciation for life in general; and
  5. Some individuals experience a deepening of their spiritual lives, often involving a significant change in their belief system. This is the part of the study that has been monitored for quite some time. In fact, it has been discussed in psychological circles that any kind of spirituality often can help heal and sometimes lessen the impact of a tragic event, even to the point of helping encourage a person to overcome obstacles to become a powerful influence in the world. Most motivational speakers have lived through PTSD to tell about it and help encourage other people to look for their greatness within.
NOTE: This study does not by any means suggest that some one who has grown as a result of struggle will not at some point still struggle with PTSD. This study also does not suggest that pain or trauma of any kind is a good thing.
Ultimately, this new idea or coined phrase, PTG, a good thing. I believe we can always look for the rainbow after the storm. In particular, when something presumed negative happens to me, I always ask how I can get out of the way of the pain to see the lesson that I need to learn.
The difference for me as a spiritually evolving human being is that I now believe that EVERYTHING happens for a reason. And the likelihood of me looking for that reason, even in the midst of the difficulty, is in all actuality why I heal faster and have a more positive attitude about life in general.

Precrastination: Is It Worse than Procrastination? #precrastination #procrastination #guilt #spirituality #SOM #cognitiveprocess

The very new term coined by Pennsylvania State psychologists from a study published in Psychological Science defines precrastination as the tendency to complete or at least begin tasks as soon as possible, even at the expense of extra physical effort. The Precrastinator will quickly empty the dishwasher and throw all of the Tupperware lids in a cupboard, causing an avalanche of lids and bowls to fall to the floor as the first person opens the cupboard door. Won’t this cause more work later? Or, the precrastinator may park in the first spot that she sees, even if it is far away from her destiny, only to cause her to have to walk farther each way? These kinds of behaviors would fit under the new psychological category as Precrastination.
Familiar adages also warn of the hazards of precrastinating:
  • Measure twice, cut once.
  • Marry in haste, repent at leisure.
  • Look before you leap.
I would add, by doing a task right away, you don’t have to remember to do it later, such as bill paying. I know, as soon as I get my mail, I put bills directly into my banking Bill Pay function the day I receive them, so I can shred the bill and get it off of my desk. I like a clean desk, my list of to-do’s checked off, and do not like the idea of any job or chore looming over my head. Yes, I suppose, I am a precrastinator.
Yikes. I don’t know if I like this term, right now. I certainly know I have never been a procrastinator, which is a person who delays or postpones an action for various psychological reasons. If you are procrastinator, you know why you wait to finish things. I have had clients who are afraid to put the final period on anything because they are perfectionists and afraid to be incorrect. Some clients just do not have a good perception of how long any activity takes. And others like the control procrastination has over others, when the task involves getting something done for another person, such as a partner or spouse.
Studies would show that the reason I precrastinate is because of reward! I get a sense of great satisfaction from doing the chore and getting it over with, so I don’t have to leave it on my metaphorical plate for later. When, though, can this behavior be detrimental? This is the big question for psychologists.
I’ll give you an example in my own life when I’ve had to work against my desire to get something done quickly. Sometimes, I will have the need to complete a task before, organically, it is ready to be done. For instance, let’s say that I am working on a new book. Knowing that the editorial process can be quite daunting, I might hire two editors and also edit the book myself. So, when I get all of the edits back from the editors, I make one clean sweep of the book and assume it’s done.
However, the better choice would be to set the book aside for a week or two and reread it with the new edits to make sure that the edits had achieved the right resolve. In the past I have been quick to get the job done and have been left with more errors than expected and have had to delay publishing because of my Precrastination.
Can you find places in your life where you are too quick to get something done, only for you to open the metaphoric cupboard door and have an avalanche of stuff fall to the floor?
Maybe it’s time we precrastinators take a little more organic time to complete the said tasks and stay in the NOW as we do these chores. Each task can be a pleasure when you fully immerse yourself into the process, instead of just doing something to accomplish it. Where is the true gain in completing something half-ars?

A God of the Living: Controlling Addictive Behavior #spiritualfacts #breathingexercises #addiction #overeating #oversexed #pranayama

I had a very special friend who was a mortician. Though he wasn’t supposed to, he allowed me to view his workroom as he restored bodies that had no life. At first, I was thinking I would be petrified at the site of such a body. However, after the initial shock of seeing a not-living body, I realized there was absolutely nothing left to this living person. Even the mortician and the stylists had to recreate the image of this person to present to the people at the funeral home.
Dead and alive has one difference: the breath! So, the yogis of old understood this paradigm and took much effort in working with and studying the nature of the breath in humans. Yoga has over 100 breathing exercise that help the person understand the dynamics and the control one has over the breath called the pranayama. These exercises are two-fold. They oxygenate the body and create healthy organs. But, they also create the paradigm of understanding the one and only thing we have control over in our lives: breath.
This same breath leads us to the ONE instant we need to understand to lead a joyful and happy life, THE NOW. So, if you monitor your breath a few times a day, you can also quickly understand that when you release control of the breath, the body breathes on its own volition. This shows that the living, breathing, and function organism—the body—has life outside of your thinking. This is an interesting fact to meditate on.
If the body can breathe on its own, what else can it do on its own. Are there other parts of the body that function from instinctual drive to stay alive, to propagate, to stay hydrated? Absolutely. So, you must constantly distinguish what parts of your thoughts are coming from an instinct and what parts are your mind’s and spirit’s organic thoughts. This can be a daunting chore, especially if you are used to letting your body gets its way. Let’s look at a couple of examples:
Food is an easy one. We must eat to survive. So, hunger becomes a reactive force for the brain. So, if you finish eating your dinner, are completely full, and still feel the need to eat something sweet, then you are allowing the craving of the body to control your mind. If you do this too often, eventually, you will believe you NEED that sweet, which obviously isn’t the case.
Sex is also an easy example. How often are we led by the instinct of the body to be attached to another? This depends on how you have let your body distinguish intimacy and sexuality. If you think sexuality is intimacy, then you will probably crave sex all the time and be in constant pursuit of it. If you control your instinctual desire by telling yourself what is best for your soul and spirit, then your body will not get used to being satisfied sexually, 24-7. Any kind of addictive behavior will eventually lead you down a road to destruction or bad health. Eventually, you have to take control again. This is the way.
I’m sure as you are moving through your day you can think of a few other places in life that you have let the little kid inside have his/her way too often. Now s/he controls your house, your body! In these instances, it’s time to reel in the misbehavior, and begin to take control again. You will feel fantastic as you learn to control the body.
I’ll talk more about this tomorrow.

Can Feelings Guide Us? #spiritualadvice #DivineMind #ScienceofMind #SOM #SpiritualLiving

Let me first define a feeling as an urging coming from a symptom of the body or mind, such as a stomachache, a strong desire to leave somewhere, hunger for something specific, a need to call someone, or anything external that you can touch or sense that causes an internal unction. In other words, instead of using your thinking brain to decide what you want to do, you use a feeling, first, to determine where and what you want.

Is this modality of “being led” by feelings a spiritual act?

No one, spiritual or not, cannot pull himself out of being on the path of spirituality. Whether you believe it or not, your entire life is being led by something greater than all of us. What you call that “something” is dependent on your relationship to Spirit. If you have no relationship to Spirit and would not listen to a spiritual unction or leading, at all, because that is not your nature, then Spirit will certainly use your hunger, thirst, physical desires to move you forward to your highest and best.

I know there have been times in my life when I simply felt a strong desire to go to the mall to shop for clothes. In so doing, bumped into someone whom I was definitely supposed to see. I know that I was supposed to see her, because she changed my life. This was not just happenstance.

So, I am left to wonder if Spirit uses all of our desires more than we even know to direct us onto a path that has been perfectly designed. The only difference in unspiritual Joe and me is that I perceived the synchronicity as spiritual. Most people just move through life on urges. But, since everything is Spirit and made by Spirit, even these urges are organic and are used to shape us, mold us, and move us on our intended paths.

This is certainly a good lesson in humility. Spiritual leaders are no more led by spirit than a humble farmer who never read a book about spirituality. Right? We are all in this divine plane of spirit being led by every sense. You might think that there is a difference then with spiritual people learning to create using the Law of Spiritual Mind Treatment. But, even here, many are creating using the Law of Mind, without ever having heard of it. This begs the big questions: Is there a need for religion? If so, what might that reason be?

Well, here it is—the only difference in unspiritual Joe and us is intention. That’s it. My intention is to be a conduit of good and love. Spirit may use all the same way to move me as It does everyone else. But, my intention is to bring love to the world. Most people who are building castles to the sky, really do not have love or peace in the mix. That is truly the only difference between spiritual and unspiritual. The spirit-led person lives in the world of you AND me, and the unspiritual person lives in a fearful world of you OR me.
