How Many Years a Slave? #12Yearsaslave

I have been a slave. I have worked under the powerful taskmaster of the past for 53 years now. The chains drag behind me like a constant reminder that though my life has changed, my simple mind hasn’t. I grab hold tightly and pull the past with me every every step I take. When will I let go?

Last night, during the Oscars, a wonderful film won “Best Picture”: 12 Years a Slave. Newcomer Lupita Nyongo took the award for best female in a supporting role. The years of slavery for African Americans are over, yet are we willing to let go of the last vestiges of the past. If we simply watch the aftereffect of accolades going on in African American direction, we couldn’t deny it. Yes, prejudice is everywhere, but we are moving forward to liberation, everyday.

Yes, women still have a struggle for equality, but we are revealing wrong and making small steps forward, every day. Yes, the GLBT community does not have equal rights yet, but, judging by the past changes for African Americans and women, the influence of moviemakers and the billions watching movies, give me the feeling that we have a chance at worldwide change. Why? Mostly because of how movies shape the American point of view.

I love how 30 years ago, a gay man starring in a Broadway, television or movie production was taboo. But today, a gay character supports almost every film and television show. Why? Because this is America! And we will not stand against policymakers and religious right wing to shape our country. So, people with lots of money and influence—who are not politians—step up to the plate and make a difference.

You don’t have to look hard to see how changed life is here in America when you watch 12 Years a Slave. Yes, we have a way to go. But, no, we are not the same country with all the same ideals. Most of us believe differently. You don’t have to look too much further than our African American first lady and president.
Where the problem exists is in two places: 1) How religion influences politics; and 2: How much are we willing to let go of the past to look for a better, fairer future?

This movement forward begins in your own brain, my friends. If you don’t let go of past hurts, past pain, and the influence of your parents, you will never shape your own world in peace. If you carry the chains of slavery into the future, you will always be shrouded and influenced by bigotry, fear, and prejudice. If you want to make lasting and effective change, let go of the chains of the past holding you in your pain. I urge you! We will all feel the effects of the masses finding a new Authentic America!
