ABC'S HOT NEW SHOW #Resurrection #prodigalson

ABC’s Hot New Show: #Resurrection

Nothing intrigues humanity more than the dead coming back to life. We have many books written about people who have died, seen the light, and came back to tell about it. In a metaphoric way, we, also, delight to see someone die spiritually, only to find his/her way back to the safety of spirit’s arms, as the Prodigal Son.

I watched ABC’S new bombshell and was happily entertained. The premise is that a young, American boy the age of 6 is found in a field in China. When he is taken back to America, the man representing human services discovers that the boy has been dead for 17 years. Though the boy looks exactly like the parent’s son who drowned as a child, they can’t conceive of the idea that this miracle could take place. But, then the boy begins to say things that their son said when he was a child, things that only their special son would know.

My belief is that the premise will be stories of this nature. I’m not sure how or why the writers will explain the miracles, but I’m intrigued enough to watch the show again. In the past few years, I find it amazing how what has become popular on television and in movies has spiritual intrigue. This feels like a shift in human consciousness to me, a good shift toward, at least, to the idea of man embracing the idea of a spiritual existence accompanying our human one. Yeah, Hollywood!

Pardon the Expression! #behaviormodification #relationshipadvice

Pardon the Expression! #behaviormodification #relationshipadvice

Why would a person’s behavior to a waitress or salesperson be so important in relationship? If your friend or mate treats a waiter poorly, you are sure to know that, eventually, you will be treated with that same bad behavior. Anyone can curtail poor actions to win over a friend or a new date. Not everyone can modify behavior in every situation, though. One of the suggestions I often give to clients and people looking for new friends or relationships is: Make sure the perspective person you want in your life treats people around you the same as he treats you!

A narcissist, for instance, can act as if he or she is completely wonderful in public, but can treat you terribly when you are by yourself. Conversely, an avoidantly attached and angry person will try to win you over with flowers, lavish dinners, and gifts, but might have a difficult time holding back anger in heavy traffic or around a waitress who is too busy to attend to his needs. In those times, you should become keenly aware of how this person acts. Again, when it is safe to be who she really is on the inside, the monsters come out! Then, you feel trapped with someone you thought was a saint.

I have been in this situation a few times. My theory held true in every relationship. I once had a date lie to his mother in front of me within the first two months of a landslide of great, lavish, and wonderful deeds. The lie was so blatant, and he did it with such ease that I was amazed. I questioned him about the lie. He had a good excuse. But, I should have bailed in that instant. Instead, I spent several years fighting his demons and wondering if everything he said was a lie.

I, also, had a best friend who acted poorly around my other dear friends, but was wonderful in every way to me. My other friends would come up to me and say, “Jane treated me like dirt yesterday at your show. Why is she such a bitch?” I shook it off, each of the many times I was faced with that situation. Secretly, though, I believed, I felt special, because my best friend treated me with such respect and love—different than all others.

As sure as I’m a Democrat, this best friend turned into my worst friend, when we were faced with a simple disagreement that could have been fixed with ten words. Instead, she hired a lawyer and got me entangled in a mess that caused my partner and I great strife.

Trust me on this fact: Carefully watch the behavior of someone whom you want to invite into your life! Steadfast awareness could mean your business, your relationship, or your money!

Safe Enough to Stay #relationship #relationshipadvice

Safe Enough to Stay #relationship #relationshipadvice

Many clients ask me how they would know if a relationship is right for them. I often congratulate a client for even asking this hard question. Most people simply fly by the seat of their pants, literally. By that, I mean they use their sensual desire as a guidepost, which couldn’t be more wrong in a situation where secure behavior is paramount for a lasting relationship.

My litmus test is simply this: Do I feel safe in this relationship? What aspects of this relationship help me feel I can: 1) be myself; 2) be transparent; 3) feel heard; 4) feel respected; and most importantly, 5) feel that our spiritual and physical paths are moving in the same direction? Most people don’t ask the last question and end up facing difficult decisions, such as, having to move from their home and family, change religions, stop exercising, eat vegetarian, or lie about the relationship to relatives and family, to name a few.

A great relationship includes, at least, safety in knowing that your partner loves you and sees a future with you. Yes, it may take a while to envision the future (by “awhile,” I don’t mean 3 years). Most securely attached people can see (I didn’t say plan!) a future with someone he loves within a few months. If they can’t imagine it, it probably won’t happen. Remember, what you see in mind, happens in kind.

So, if your partner is afraid to talk about the future after you have made a solid commitment and have settled into the commitment for a few month, then her mind simply isn’t completely in the relationship. She is in, what I would call, a sophomoric mind set—one in which she is still looking, while she is with you. I’m not sure I could bear that kind of relationship. Remember, and don’t afraid to say this, “talking about the future” and “planning it” are not the same. A secure person needs to be able to see a life with you and talk about it, before you ever plan it. In other words, don’t start making loans and selling houses until you have a ring on your finger.

What Is That Smell? #sensorydefensiveness #adultautism

I’m very sensitive to smell when I’m in crowded places. Sometimes in church or at a mall, I’ll sense ten different colognes and body odors. I feel as though someone has attacked me physically through my olfactory system in those situations. Other times, light can be too bright or too neon for my eyes. I’ll get a headache or a migraine, if I don’t protect my eyes. If I eat something that is slightly amiss from the taste I’m expecting, I assure you, I’m going to send it back to be cooked correctly. Most people would say, I’m simply a pain in the ass to be around. But what I have is actually on the cusp of adult autism called Sensory Defensiveness.

Sometimes I walk into my home and catch a whiff of something putrefying or dank. My senses are like a dog’s, so most people don’t even notice what I smell. I begin to sniff through the house until I uncover the odor. Sometimes, it’s a rotten potato at the bottom of the 10 lb. bag. Sometimes, it’s a dishcloth that soured. Other times, it’s a vegetable in the garbage can that became rotten. Whatever it is, I can’t sleep until I find the culprit and get it out of the house. My Sensory Defensiveness is more about smells than anything else, but yours could be any one of the senses. For instance, I have a friend who can’t listen to something off pitch. The instrument makes her cringe inside as if someone is sliding a diamond across a piece of glass.

If you’re never heard this term, I’m not surprised. I didn’t discover what ailed me until someone handed me the book: Too Loud, Too Bright, Too Fast, Too Tight, by Sharon Heller, which explains the not-so-rare phenomena. About 10% of us have this disease.

Quite honestly, I breathed a sigh of relief. Just knowing that there is a reason why I go to a bar and want to fall asleep, or scream, or get the feeling of being overly stimulated in crowds and at shopping marts. My neural pathways in my brain fire too quickly, causing this adverse effect in my body. Many ways exist to help calm my mind and slow down the hurling thoughts and impressions when I’m over stimulated.

I can help as a life coach and hypnotist to calm your mind and change your exhausting world to one of peace and strong personal choice! If you have been experiencing this social and environmental anxiety, just pick up the phone and call me for an appointment. I promise, I can help, almost immediately.

Defying Age? #aging #growingold

Defying Age? #aging #growingold

Painful signs happen as our pretty coifs slowly turn gray or white. Flags fly high on our skin as it sags or creases deep into the recesses of our eyes and laugh lines. Our memories fail like overused hard drives. And our surge to live diminishes like batteries losing their charge.

One of the hardest aspects of life is either growing older or watching someone we love grow older. I remember viewing a picture of myself laugh. Around my eyes were 10 creases in my skin. I immediately went to an aesthetician and began getting facials and skin peels, until I couldn’t see the wrinkles. I didn’t want to age. Worse yet, I didn’t want anyone else to see me age. Then, one awful day recently, I became allergic around my eyes to every skin product I tried. Alas, I will have puffy eyes for the rest of my life! God, I was mortified.

I’ve had friends tell me that they have earned every gray hair and wrinkle. Well, I’ll take the credit for having weathered the storm, but I don’t want to APPEAR WEATHERED! We can leave that for those sun worshippers on South Beach who are too burnt and too old to be tanning or wearing G-strings. Time and place, people!

Today, I brought my 81-year old mother home from the hospital after having her left carotid artery cleared of plaque build-up. Three years ago she had a triple bypass. Five years ago, almost to the day, she had a colon resection. Each time, I see her lay in that hospital bed, wan, helpless, cut from head to toe, and unable to do for herself, I see my own ephemeral life passing by. Aging is hard to face, but change and getting older happens every moment of every day. I can’t avoid the inevitable anymore.

So, today, I won’t color my hair or get another skin treatment, as I know my lesson is to be auspiciously aware of the demise of my mind and body. The sages of old had a meditation exercise in which you imagine yourself getting older, dying, and then merging back with the earth. I believe, the exercise is to help us recognize the reality of the human existence. Eckhart Tolle calls this existence the Pain Body, as this is where our Egos experience discomfort, aging, and the resistance to peace and spiritual awareness. I don’t believe this means to abuse your body with bad food and no exercise. I simply feel that no matter how much you do to preserve the body, you can’t avoid age.

Today, I’m thankful for my 53 years and quite comfortable in my skin. I bought a fancy new hat last week. I look like a picture of my dad in it, especially when I’m on the arm of a 33 year old. I envy many things in life, but youth is not one of them. I don’t want to go through the hard times again to the get to this place of contentment and peace. I guess, watching youth pass us by is part of releasing from the resistance to homeostasis. We can get facelifts, chest lifts, tummy tucks, and derma-whatevers, but everyone knows how old you are. You are not fooling anyone, especially yourself. With age comes wisdom and peace. Enjoy it while you can, as, soon, it will be over. Next month, you may be saying what my father said on his deathbed, “If I would have only known…”

Practical Christianity #newthought

Practical Christianity

On the New Thought side of Christianity, ministers often refer to themselves as teachers of practical Christianity. Why practical, you may ask? What makes this religious belief different than the one you have subscribed to?

In the late 1800’s, a group of proactive, movers and shakers in the spiritual community got together to study the Christian Bible. Mostly, they had come together because Spirit had moved each of them in a way different than discussed in normal church services. Myrtle Fillmore, for instance, one of the founders of Unity church, sought out healing from a God she “expected” would do as the scriptures taught. She prayed about her personal disease, tuberculosis, which she had contracted at the age of 8 with prayer and consistent affirmations. When God healed her, she believed with all her heart. From the abundance of her faith, she sought to teach others about a God bigger than they had believed in the past.

The study group had members such as Ernest Holmes, Charles Fillmore, and Mary Baker Eddy, all of whom initiated New Thought churches. Centers of Spiritual Living, Unity, and Christian Science all, basically, have the same root teachings, but each has its individual take on the scriptures.

For instance, Christian Science is considered to be a religion most people recognize from its desire to refuse modern medicine to heal the body. However, I quote this from the documents of faith for Christian Science:

“Christian Scientists are free to follow the dictates of their own conscience. If they desire to put themselves under medical care instead of relying on Christian Science treatment, they are free to do so. However, most students of Christian Science have found God to be the great Physician and the only help they need.”

Most Christians believe that New Thought is a bit sideways concerning one particular belief: the idea of salvation in Jesus’ name.

Yes, it is true, that New Thought does not have a salvation theory, per se, as other Christian doctrines believe in the literal translation from John 3:16, which says: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

New Thought believes that a believer can’t just be saved once by one solemn prayer. They believe that salvation from the Ego mind or evil or hell, according to the Greek word for salvation, Sovo, means to save or make whole. The verb is a continual action in the original Greek. So, by believing in the teachings of Jesus, you continually are being saved from opposing ideas that the world teaches.

But how John 3:16 connects to the idea of a hell and a heaven, are up for a lot of discussion, when you research the original belief. Even the words “hell” and “forever” have been dissected so many times that Humpty Dumpty couldn’t put them back together again.

Basically, people with opposing beliefs say that hell just means a place where one dumped her garbage. Most beliefs about fire and damnation come from a book known as Dante’s Inferno written in 1300, which isn’t biblically based at all. Then, the word forever, in the original Greek, means from ages to age, which is still considering time. And most agree that spirituality is beyond time and space.

So, make up your own mind about what you believe, and hold on to it tightly. Most people want to teach you a version of their truth. If you don’t believe their truths, you are doomed for Dante’s hell, or worse yet, their version of hell. Don’t trust manipulating people or ministers, who scare you into believing their theories of God.

Don’t be lazy! Discover for yourself what the scriptures mean. Almost any word from the Bible or other spiritual writing can be “googled” and researched. Have fun discerning what you believe. And remember don’t let anyone tell you what’s right for you. No one knows your body and no one knows your mind or your history. You have to make those delicate spiritual choices for yourself.

Facing the Death of a Loved One #death

Facing the Death of a Loved One #death

I have spent days in the hospital with friends and family. I have faced the shock of someone dying in an accident or murder. I have grieved over the loss of a child. I have watched tearfully as a vet put my dog to sleep. But nothing is worse than staring down death of your closest parent. The healthy bond between a parent and child is a close one. When a parent begins to show severe signs of aging, a place of grief inside rises up from which you have never known.

Every since my mother has been diagnosed with a 90% blockage of her right carotid artery, I have been feeling deep fear of losing her. We have gone through two near-death experiences with her, and she has survived both. She had a triple bypass two years ago and a colon resection while having pneumonia five years ago. The last incident led to a month-long hospital stay. Most days, I would arrive at the hospital imagining that she had passed while I had gone home to shower. She looked that sickly.

Then, two years ago, seeing her chest sliced down the middle for the bypass was more than my stomach could handle. When you are the caregiver, you throw out being shy around anything and everything you have to face for that parent. We all are naked in our most vulnerable times.

So, now, she faces yet another operation, tomorrow. Without this surgery, she is sure to have a brain aneurism with only 10% of her artery open and scary plaque filling the rest of her carotid. When she was told, by her doctor that she had to have this operation, he told her it wasn’t a serious one. But, all surgeries have risks. We both felt as if the doctor was playing the risks down. You don’t take a knife to a place in the body that brings oxygen-enriched blood to the brain without knowing that, with one slip up, many scenarios, including death could occur. But, the physician was probably trying to say that this operation is not brain surgery.

Mom decided to wait until the latest date she could to get the operation, probably out of fear. But what has happened within the month we’ve been waiting for the surgery, her symptoms have worsened. So, almost every night, I get up and check to see if she’s breathing, like new moms with their babies. When she doesn’t get up in the morning for breakfast, I’m compelled to go to her bedroom and wake her, just to see if she’s breathing and cognizant.

I’m not afraid of my own death. But dealing with someone else’s death is difficult in so many ways, especially when you are responsible for every last detail of her demise. Honestly, I’m not sure where to begin to imagine what I’d do if she didn’t make it. With my father, my sister Lori took the brunt of the responsibility, because she was his favorite. Even though I helped her with all of the legalities, I still didn’t have to take the majority of the harsh reality.

I had a friend say to me recently about the transition of her mother, that mostly she felt relief. But the laws around death and the transference of deeds and money and belongs get hard, sometimes. All that being said, I understand your grief and fear, if you have a sick parent. We have to trust that God has a beginning, middle, and end to every story and every purpose here on earth. Accepting that that decision isn’t yours is part of a happy, healthy, and secure life.
