I Want My (Young) Body Back #aging #Believing #DivineMind #ScienceofMind #SpiritualLiving

I have seen myself aging in the mirror of my parents, especially my father. Since, his death, though, my mother is my only parental reflection, these days. Yesterday, her blood pressure was off of the charts, but only in the evenings. So, she asked if she could get an emergency appointment at her doctor. Of course, I took her there. We waited in the office for two hours before she was seen. During that time, she began to deliberate what could possibly be wrong. Of course, all roads led to death and dying.

She kept asking me all of the things that might be driving her blood pressure up at night—eating popcorn, eating cheese, eating bologna, exercising in the morning, taking a pill at this time or that time! Finally, I just said, “Mom, I’m not going to speculate as to why this is happening to you. I simply don’t know why our bodies are breaking down more and daily!”

Then, I heard myself. “Our” bodies, I said. Not, “her” body, but mine too. I could hear the frustration in my own voice. I had woken up with pain all over my body, from head to toe. It was as if someone were holding a remote control and was tapping a picture of my body. Each tap sent an electric shock to my toes, my neck, my back, my head… you name it.

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know that I am 90% diligent in doing the right actions to create a healthy mind and body: yoga, gluten-free diet, meditation, breathing exercises, etcetera ad infinitum. When do the malfunctions stop? I am trying to do the right things!
Well, o
ne thing I have noticed is that I have been complaining a lot about my pains and aches. I know that I should be confessing that my body is whole and that I know why it is whole! God does not make a perfectly beautiful universe and leave me to wilt away. Or is this just part of the dying process for all humans? We get older, our bodies diminish in health, and eventually die? I don’t like that negative thought at all. I thought I was going to be completely healthy until the day I decided to let go of my spirit and float away into the heavens.

Something inside of me, a seed of Truth, perhaps, sits there waiting to be planted in the Universal Mind about my own health and aging body. This seed is simply “Wholeness!” I must believe it completely, AS ANY PRAYER, even when I see signs of problems arising.

You see, this is the exact same issue with prayer and treatment I talk about all the time. We pray, plant the seeds of truth, and then do not back up our truth with affirmations and positive thinking. I know, without a doubt, that I must change my own thinking about this, or I will continue to have these experiences with my body.

However, I also know another truth. My health and my body will probably change a great deal as I get older. But, instead of complaining about it, I could simply be observant and watch for signs that could lead me to taking care of my body in a different way.

Here is just an example of what you must do and say to yourself if you want to keep knowing WHOLENESS, instead of acquiescing to negative thoughts about aging and death:

For instance, I notice that when I sleep in my bed, on my side, I wake up with lots of arthritic pain. When I sleep partially reclined on the sofa, without turning from side to side, I wake up with lots less pain—sometimes even pain free. So, instead of moaning about my pain the night I slept on my side, I should simply listen to the signs that my body needs to sleep on the recliner. That’s not such a big thing. Maybe moving around at night twists my spine and causes impingements.

This is a simple message of staying aware of your aging body, instead of falling prey to the idea that, though your body is aging and ultimately moving toward death, that you must go through all of the traumas of this aging body and experience the pains, as well. I am simply NOT going to believe that for myself. I am going to keep a positive attitude and take care of the aging process with diligence.

As for my mother, her blood pressure went up because of something so miniscule, we both had to laugh. The doctor had told her to take three medications at dinnertime, supposing that my mother ate dinner at 7 p.m. But, what elderly person do you know that eats that late? She eats dinner at 3:30 or 4. So, she was taking her evening medications too early. It was that simple.

Still Learning at 50 #aging #gettingolder

I have heard the saying, “when you quit learning, you die!” I had always wondered what it meant, until recently. Three weeks ago, I signed up for an all-weekend acting workshop. This will be the first workshop I’ve done in many years. I have to take CEUs every year to keep up my hypnotherapy license. I take spiritual classes to keep my head in the game. But, I hadn’t taken any opportunities to learn something new.

As I prepared for the class today, I felt an old feeling of excitement, like getting ready for college when I was 18. This morning there was a spring in my step that hadn’t been there in a while. I know that I’m opening my heart, mind, and body to a new experience today that will change my life.

I had lunch with a minister friend, yesterday. He told me a story of a man who had decided at 30, after being in a horrific accident, that he would spend the rest of his life living out of the normal paradigm, seeking to do work that would change the world for the better. He wanted to live an unconventional life. One of his goals was to travel to every country in the world. In ten years he accomplished his first goal. He blogged about it every day and ended up having a million followers. When he returned he began doing seminars and writing books that would change many lives. His entire platform was unconventional, but his intention was spot on: to live life being led by Spirit.

I have made that same dedication in my life about a year ago. I have never experience more good in my life. However, I have also not been attached to so little in my life, as well.
Changing your mind about your next experience has much to do with letting go of the fear that your belongings are your life. I released my social life, my business, and my personal intention to wait in the silence and let Spirit teach me many more lessons than I had ever learned before. I was scared, impatient, and needed to have worth immediately, when I began.

Now, I realize that every moment I experience something new and take with me into the now all that I know, all that I want to be, and all that I can contribute the world that I make a difference. You, too, can live life on the edge and experience anything you may want and desire in this life. But, you must be ready let go of your old story for a fabulous new one!

A Pot Full of Old—Aging Gracefully

“A Pot of Old” can be your “Pot of Gold,” if you let it.

I never much thought about getting old until I turned fifty. Then, suddenly, I entered a race against time to get all of the things done on my bucket list. After one big surprise birthday, I momentarily circumvented all of my fear about being rejected, because no time exists for such nonsense. So, now, as one who qualifies for AARP, I can actually rent a car for less while I’m taking my arthritis and cholesterol meds. Yeah for me!

The truth is, I actually really enjoy being an older man. The benefits of being over fifty far outweigh the problems. One amazing factor about being older is the opportunity to assess life through the lens of time. I can deliberate and make great decisions based on a large menu of items that I have already tasted, digested, and felt the benefits of. This is similar to going to a restaurant that is one you frequent, knowing that you are about to get a delicious meal with no questions asked. This is far better, sometimes, than constantly trying new restaurants with the hope that you’ll find something on the menu you enjoy.

This, I call, avoiding a sophomore attitude that is endemic in the youth. When you’re young, you want to try everything, which is a part of life. This sophomoric attitude annoys me about older men who haven’t learned this important lesson: This moment is divinely inspired. Don’t make light of the moment. Instead, live it fully, experiencing the now.

The difference is that, as an older adult, we can discern what was good and what wasn’t good about our experience—after we gave it a chance. I’m not saying I haven’t dismissed many relationships and opportunities because they simply weren’t resonating with me. No, not saying that at all. In fact, one of the great options of age is that I can make those decisions safely, knowing myself better than anyone. I absolutely can see within minutes if someone is a nurturer, a taker, a troublemaker, or a lover. It’s as if age has given me a divine sifter, like those change machines at the grocery store converting pennies and dimes to dollar bills.

Another great benefit of being older is that I see that it rains and thunders on all of us. The human experience is not purposefully singling out you or me and creating a mess for us to clean up. No, life just brings “stuff” because this is earth and we are human. In fact, I’m even getting used to being wrong. (Yes, I wrote it publicly and often say it aloud!) Apologies are becoming second nature. I get that I’m here to experience. Some of my experiences are joyful and loving. Having a bad experience and making wrong choices doesn’t make me a bad person.

Some lessons are more difficult to endure, especially if I resist them. I’m learning to plunge in and feel all of life as it passes me, taking from my experiences the lessons I’ve learned to create better times in the future.

Defying Age? #aging #growingold

Defying Age? #aging #growingold

Painful signs happen as our pretty coifs slowly turn gray or white. Flags fly high on our skin as it sags or creases deep into the recesses of our eyes and laugh lines. Our memories fail like overused hard drives. And our surge to live diminishes like batteries losing their charge.

One of the hardest aspects of life is either growing older or watching someone we love grow older. I remember viewing a picture of myself laugh. Around my eyes were 10 creases in my skin. I immediately went to an aesthetician and began getting facials and skin peels, until I couldn’t see the wrinkles. I didn’t want to age. Worse yet, I didn’t want anyone else to see me age. Then, one awful day recently, I became allergic around my eyes to every skin product I tried. Alas, I will have puffy eyes for the rest of my life! God, I was mortified.

I’ve had friends tell me that they have earned every gray hair and wrinkle. Well, I’ll take the credit for having weathered the storm, but I don’t want to APPEAR WEATHERED! We can leave that for those sun worshippers on South Beach who are too burnt and too old to be tanning or wearing G-strings. Time and place, people!

Today, I brought my 81-year old mother home from the hospital after having her left carotid artery cleared of plaque build-up. Three years ago she had a triple bypass. Five years ago, almost to the day, she had a colon resection. Each time, I see her lay in that hospital bed, wan, helpless, cut from head to toe, and unable to do for herself, I see my own ephemeral life passing by. Aging is hard to face, but change and getting older happens every moment of every day. I can’t avoid the inevitable anymore.

So, today, I won’t color my hair or get another skin treatment, as I know my lesson is to be auspiciously aware of the demise of my mind and body. The sages of old had a meditation exercise in which you imagine yourself getting older, dying, and then merging back with the earth. I believe, the exercise is to help us recognize the reality of the human existence. Eckhart Tolle calls this existence the Pain Body, as this is where our Egos experience discomfort, aging, and the resistance to peace and spiritual awareness. I don’t believe this means to abuse your body with bad food and no exercise. I simply feel that no matter how much you do to preserve the body, you can’t avoid age.

Today, I’m thankful for my 53 years and quite comfortable in my skin. I bought a fancy new hat last week. I look like a picture of my dad in it, especially when I’m on the arm of a 33 year old. I envy many things in life, but youth is not one of them. I don’t want to go through the hard times again to the get to this place of contentment and peace. I guess, watching youth pass us by is part of releasing from the resistance to homeostasis. We can get facelifts, chest lifts, tummy tucks, and derma-whatevers, but everyone knows how old you are. You are not fooling anyone, especially yourself. With age comes wisdom and peace. Enjoy it while you can, as, soon, it will be over. Next month, you may be saying what my father said on his deathbed, “If I would have only known…”

You Are Still Good

You Are Still Good

What made you think you weren’t still good? Did you happen to take a look at your expiration date this morning and think: hmmm, that once-tender meat is looking a little fatty and old? Or did you notice that your joints weren’t working the same way that they used to? Perhaps, tomorrow the warranty is up on your knees.

We absolutely only have a certain amount of time on this earth. No one knows how long that is. From the moment we come out of the birth canal, we begin to age. Did you ever notice how nice a baby’s breath smells? Compare that to your own in the morning. Something is dead in there. But what?

Everything that we think in our minds is expressing itself in our bodies. Are you thinking sick thoughts?

I’m not one of those fanatics who believes that all sickness comes from the thoughts we think. But I’m willing to stretch out beyond my comfort zone and say that what we think certainly impacts our bodies.

If you think that you are too old to exercise, then you haven’t tried chair yoga or bouncing on a fitness ball. If you are sedentary and can’t get up off your chair, there are compression exercises you can do with your hands and legs. Okay, if you can’t move your arms and legs, exercise your mind.

In theory, yoga is more of a meditative practice than an asana (movement) practice by virtue of its purpose. Yoga was meant to make you acutely aware of your body and breath, so that you could let the physical go during meditation. The yogis believed that God is the breath. Breath is what animates and moves the physical body. When you die, the first thing that happens is you stop breathing. So, it stands to good reason that something vastly holy and auspicious happens when we discover the meaning of the breath.

In most meditative practices, the objective is to simply watch the breath and not control it at all. In this process we become one with it or observers of it. Either way we alter the mental state enough to enter into a new paradigm of thought—nirvana, some call it.

If I can reach nirvana as a 53 years old, then I am just as useful and powerful as I was when I could do ten pirouettes and split jumps. Trust me, power jazz ain’t happening anymore. My body has its limitations. But my mind certainly doesn’t. I’m willing to believe that today, my very essence is more vital than it was when I was in my twenties. I believe this because every day, as my body diminishes in power, I become stronger spiritually.

Perhaps, that’s exactly the way the Creator intended. This way, we will have learned and experienced the world when we are young. Then realize that the world has little to offer compared to a spiritual connection rich with peace and unlimited joy. In fact, when this spiritual realization occurs, our physical lives become richer. Not only do we understand and know the difference between good and bad, but we have the knowledge to choose what’s best for us experientially.

I have never wanted to go back in time and relive my past. I still believe that, even though my body gets closer to its expiration date, I still have a lot of good and wonderful days ahead. You can believe that too.

There's Still Some Fight in These Fists

There’s Still Some Fight in These Fists

Every day I wake up wondering if I’m going to feel better or worse. Seriously, with age, the health of our bodies is a gamble. I couldn’t have made more right choices concerning my health growing up: I was a vegetarian or vegan for more than half of my life; I exercised almost the entire time—everything from aerobics and weight lifting to yoga, presently; I have used skin treatments; I have taken vitamins; I have rested when appropriate and really have never overworked; and I take lots of time to laugh and enjoy life and sunshine and flowers in my garden.

Still, when I wake up in the morning, sometimes I can’t make it to the bathroom without terrible, arthritic pain. On a scale of one to ten, most times the pain is in the seven range. Should I thank my father and mother for these genes, or have I actually done something to cause the terrible pain I have about 40% of the time?

In my entire life I have never drunk coffee or have used much caffeine at all. Lately, however, I have taken to drinking three gulps of coffee in the morning with my partner. I don’t drink enough to make me feel frantic or edgy. I don’t consume enough for my stomach to gurgle with that acidy feeling. I simply take two and sometimes three sips. That’s it.

During the next couple hours, instead of developing a slow and steady pace toward movement and comfort, I now have a sense of general wellbeing. Sometimes I used to get severe migraines as the afternoon came upon me. These have even stopped completely. I have gotten off of my prophylactic medication, Topomax, which I took daily to prevent migraines.  Who would have imagined that a small dose of caffeine from morning Joe could help my physical pain and the migraines? Certainly, not me.

As we get older, we certainly do open ourselves up to the idea that we could become wiser. Jesus gave us the advice: “Physician, heal yourself.” I have sincerely taken that scripture to heart.

I try not to believe that I am moving toward stasis of any kind. I want to feel as if I am completely a living, moving, and breathing example of life growing and expanding exponentially with time. I see myself as a man who can recreate himself at any time and at any moment for the current circumstance. I want to believe the best about myself, and so should you.

Consider it pointless to have a negative attitude toward life and existence. Negativity only attracts more negativity, like a magnet. Creating anger, instead of dealing with your hurt, only propagates more turmoil in your life and in the world.

With age, lets all learn the hard lessons of life. Begin to recognize that leaving things to be fixed by others, leaving messes to be cleaned up by others, and not taking care of our own lives is simply creating a tempest of problems that will explode in all of our faces, eventually.

We can count on growing older. We can consider ourselves fortunate, if as we age, we gain wisdom and compassion—both towards ourselves and others. Moving forward in life can be a beautiful passageway to grand understanding and insight if we keep listening for that still small voice within us to lead us to peace and greener pastures.
