I Want My (Young) Body Back #aging #Believing #DivineMind #ScienceofMind #SpiritualLiving

I have seen myself aging in the mirror of my parents, especially my father. Since, his death, though, my mother is my only parental reflection, these days. Yesterday, her blood pressure was off of the charts, but only in the evenings. So, she asked if she could get an emergency appointment at her doctor. Of course, I took her there. We waited in the office for two hours before she was seen. During that time, she began to deliberate what could possibly be wrong. Of course, all roads led to death and dying.

She kept asking me all of the things that might be driving her blood pressure up at night—eating popcorn, eating cheese, eating bologna, exercising in the morning, taking a pill at this time or that time! Finally, I just said, “Mom, I’m not going to speculate as to why this is happening to you. I simply don’t know why our bodies are breaking down more and daily!”

Then, I heard myself. “Our” bodies, I said. Not, “her” body, but mine too. I could hear the frustration in my own voice. I had woken up with pain all over my body, from head to toe. It was as if someone were holding a remote control and was tapping a picture of my body. Each tap sent an electric shock to my toes, my neck, my back, my head… you name it.

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know that I am 90% diligent in doing the right actions to create a healthy mind and body: yoga, gluten-free diet, meditation, breathing exercises, etcetera ad infinitum. When do the malfunctions stop? I am trying to do the right things!
Well, o
ne thing I have noticed is that I have been complaining a lot about my pains and aches. I know that I should be confessing that my body is whole and that I know why it is whole! God does not make a perfectly beautiful universe and leave me to wilt away. Or is this just part of the dying process for all humans? We get older, our bodies diminish in health, and eventually die? I don’t like that negative thought at all. I thought I was going to be completely healthy until the day I decided to let go of my spirit and float away into the heavens.

Something inside of me, a seed of Truth, perhaps, sits there waiting to be planted in the Universal Mind about my own health and aging body. This seed is simply “Wholeness!” I must believe it completely, AS ANY PRAYER, even when I see signs of problems arising.

You see, this is the exact same issue with prayer and treatment I talk about all the time. We pray, plant the seeds of truth, and then do not back up our truth with affirmations and positive thinking. I know, without a doubt, that I must change my own thinking about this, or I will continue to have these experiences with my body.

However, I also know another truth. My health and my body will probably change a great deal as I get older. But, instead of complaining about it, I could simply be observant and watch for signs that could lead me to taking care of my body in a different way.

Here is just an example of what you must do and say to yourself if you want to keep knowing WHOLENESS, instead of acquiescing to negative thoughts about aging and death:

For instance, I notice that when I sleep in my bed, on my side, I wake up with lots of arthritic pain. When I sleep partially reclined on the sofa, without turning from side to side, I wake up with lots less pain—sometimes even pain free. So, instead of moaning about my pain the night I slept on my side, I should simply listen to the signs that my body needs to sleep on the recliner. That’s not such a big thing. Maybe moving around at night twists my spine and causes impingements.

This is a simple message of staying aware of your aging body, instead of falling prey to the idea that, though your body is aging and ultimately moving toward death, that you must go through all of the traumas of this aging body and experience the pains, as well. I am simply NOT going to believe that for myself. I am going to keep a positive attitude and take care of the aging process with diligence.

As for my mother, her blood pressure went up because of something so miniscule, we both had to laugh. The doctor had told her to take three medications at dinnertime, supposing that my mother ate dinner at 7 p.m. But, what elderly person do you know that eats that late? She eats dinner at 3:30 or 4. So, she was taking her evening medications too early. It was that simple.

Aging #gettingolder #aginggracefully #holisticmedicine

Everyday, I look at myself in the mirror, especially in the morning, and find new age spots, wrinkles, extra weight, hair loss in places I want hair, and hair accumulating in my nose and ears. Growing older takes patience! Everyday, I must decide I’m not just dying, but actually here on the earth to make an impact and to learn my daily lessons—especially about being compassionate to others and myself. If I don’t remind myself of these facts, I might spend the day trying to counteract the aging process for my Ego’s sake with facials, massages, creams, and the like.

I’m usually the person in the room who is always cold. I wear sweaters in the summer in air-conditioned places. In the winter, if I’m in the north, I have one more sweater, layer and coat than most people. However, yesterday, the entire day I sweated like a pig in heat. I had to apply deodorant five times, because I smelled of Lipton onion soup. I was disgusted with my body.

I happened to be having dinner with a doctor friend that evening, who checked my blood pressure. It was 179 over 120, which is really, really high. He asked me a series of questions about drugs and medications I had been taking, trying to decide if anything would be affecting my heart. However, when he asked me the questions, I didn’t realize that I had been using a holistic cure for stomach acid in the form of Sodium Bicarbonate, sometimes 3-4 times in a day. I had forgotten that the salt content could affect my blood pressure. Worse yet, I have been watching my sister with congestive heart failure and my mother who has recently had a triple bypass do the same thing as I. Crazy us!

In a time when our bodies are becoming more and more fragile, we should be careful about everything we put in our mouths, including holistic cures. Western medicine may be corrupt in many ways, but it has taught us the mechanics of how the body reacts to certain drugs and chemical stimuli, including vitamins and herbs. A good way to live and age gracefully is to use holistic medicine to prevent problems. But when the issues occur, we may consider that western medicine can provide the cure we may need in that moment. For me, I was happy for the advice to get back on the Statins that I had been prescribed. My heart rate was normal this morning and I don’t feel restless and hot anymore.

Maybe old age isn’t so bad. Time has actually given me some sense balance along the way.

A Pot Full of Old—Aging Gracefully

“A Pot of Old” can be your “Pot of Gold,” if you let it.

I never much thought about getting old until I turned fifty. Then, suddenly, I entered a race against time to get all of the things done on my bucket list. After one big surprise birthday, I momentarily circumvented all of my fear about being rejected, because no time exists for such nonsense. So, now, as one who qualifies for AARP, I can actually rent a car for less while I’m taking my arthritis and cholesterol meds. Yeah for me!

The truth is, I actually really enjoy being an older man. The benefits of being over fifty far outweigh the problems. One amazing factor about being older is the opportunity to assess life through the lens of time. I can deliberate and make great decisions based on a large menu of items that I have already tasted, digested, and felt the benefits of. This is similar to going to a restaurant that is one you frequent, knowing that you are about to get a delicious meal with no questions asked. This is far better, sometimes, than constantly trying new restaurants with the hope that you’ll find something on the menu you enjoy.

This, I call, avoiding a sophomore attitude that is endemic in the youth. When you’re young, you want to try everything, which is a part of life. This sophomoric attitude annoys me about older men who haven’t learned this important lesson: This moment is divinely inspired. Don’t make light of the moment. Instead, live it fully, experiencing the now.

The difference is that, as an older adult, we can discern what was good and what wasn’t good about our experience—after we gave it a chance. I’m not saying I haven’t dismissed many relationships and opportunities because they simply weren’t resonating with me. No, not saying that at all. In fact, one of the great options of age is that I can make those decisions safely, knowing myself better than anyone. I absolutely can see within minutes if someone is a nurturer, a taker, a troublemaker, or a lover. It’s as if age has given me a divine sifter, like those change machines at the grocery store converting pennies and dimes to dollar bills.

Another great benefit of being older is that I see that it rains and thunders on all of us. The human experience is not purposefully singling out you or me and creating a mess for us to clean up. No, life just brings “stuff” because this is earth and we are human. In fact, I’m even getting used to being wrong. (Yes, I wrote it publicly and often say it aloud!) Apologies are becoming second nature. I get that I’m here to experience. Some of my experiences are joyful and loving. Having a bad experience and making wrong choices doesn’t make me a bad person.

Some lessons are more difficult to endure, especially if I resist them. I’m learning to plunge in and feel all of life as it passes me, taking from my experiences the lessons I’ve learned to create better times in the future.

Refusing to Age

Refusing to Age

I read an article recently that talked of all the ways the body ages and atrophies to cause a hunched back in old age. Two of the main causes of that restriction are in the hip flexors and iliopsoas muscles.

If you feel one inch to the left of your right hip bone, then about two inches down toward your feet from there, and press inward, fairly hard, you will feel the iliopsoas and some of the hip flexor muscles. This pocket of muscles begins to restrict early on in the aging process. Most people, who do not stretch or do yoga, experience back problems as a result of this connective muscle from the leg to the spine. If it is not stretched, the lower back suffers considerably over time.

I recommend doing a Google search for iliopsoas exercises to find some stretches that will be suited for you. If you can make it to a yoga class, ask the teacher to show a few iliopsoas-specific exercises.

I remember as a young child I would always look at the children of aging adults. I wondered if the child would someday look like his/her parent. A couple of times I stopped dating someone because of the scary reality that my partner would be bald, decrepit, and riddled with disease. Ah, youth! I would never be so rash today.

Of course, the reality of someone having all the same diseases as a parent is slim, but without changing your life’s course toward health, you may likely be on the same path as your parents, even though you had tried not to follow in their footsteps.

My dad was very arthritic and had terrible stomach problems from as early as 35 years old. I intended to do yoga and keep from having problems with my back. I intended to be a vegetarian and health fanatic so that I wouldn’t end up with his stomach problem. However, I ended up with both of his problems—sometimes, I think worse than he had them. Go figure.

One thing I absolutely know for sure, though, is that, though I have the same physical ailments, my quality of life is much better than my father’s. He ached and moaned about his back and leg pain and stomach constantly. I believe I have 90% of this aging under control because I have been diligent in taking care of myself, probably to the detriment of other areas of my life. But, my mantra has always been, you can have all the money in the world and not be at peace or in good health to enjoy it. If I had a choice of one or the other, I’d choose peace and health every time.

Go to Week 3 of the “Year to CLEAR Challenge” at www.Bosebastian.com

_______________________________________

Below is information that I will be sharing for about a month, as not every person on my list reads the blog every day. If you have already read it, just skip over it. Thanks for understanding.

A Year to CLEAR Challenge:
(Please Know: You Can Join Us At Any Point in the Year Challenge.)

The masses search outward for things that qualify them as a person, but I always go inward for that which quantifies me for greatness. At twenty-five I preached on street corners in NYC as an in-the-closet Pentecostal minister. One day I heard a still small voice say, ‘God cannot be contained in a book or a law or even in a religion. Dig deeper, reach further to find me, and you will find your authentic Self.’”

A Year to CLEAR Challenge!

The acronym CLEAR stands for (Compassionate, Loving, Enthusiastic, And Relationship-Ready). The goal of this project is to engulf readers in a weekly study that will transform them by removing blocks, promote self-growth, and give them wings to fly freely into daily life. Each week, by going to BoSebastian.com and choosing the Year to CLEAR Challenge tab, a new challenge or thought to provoke conversation, growth, and group functionality.

My vision is to make Finding Authentic You the book to have in your Kindle or on your computer. The book is a comprehensive look at growth—spiritually, mentally, and physically.

As a yoga teacher and student of the Ayurvedic tradition, I bring to the table understanding of physical challenges, the ability to overcome mental problems with Life & Health Coaching, as well as hypnotherapy, and expertise in meditation and spirituality as a minister.

The combination of all three in one book with an interactive connection to like-minded readers, for one year, is what makes this Year to CLEAR Challenge a must-do for every spiritual seeker.

The One-Year Approach to Change

No one believes he or she can change overnight. But success in change comes from the metaphors of nature. Seasonally, life changes all around us in nature. Finding Authentic You offers a gradual change perspective, looking at the triune aspects of change as in yoga: Body, Mind and Spirit.

Accessing the ability to change and finding yourself actually pursuing change must be a daily search, which I call getting to the “observer mind.”

In this frontal cortex of the brain we find the anatomy of change and the power to counter every negative trigger of the human process. The workings of Hypnosis, NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) are all positive actions to help the mind and body flow to a positive space for change.

Every aspect of FINDING AUTHENTIC YOU fulfills this constant need for diffusing the negative past and dreaming of a fulfilling future.

Step 1: Recognize That Change is Inevitable
Step 2: Release from Resistance to Change
Step 3: Understanding Change and Allow Spirit to Define It
Step 4: A History Lesson—About You
Step 5: Look at Your Past with Compassion
Step 6: Making a Strong Commitment to Change
Step 7: Dream Your Fabulous Future

Old Age Approaching Quickly

Old Age Approaching Quickly

I began the celebration of my birthday by getting a facial that practically burnt off all my old skin. My face looks 40 right now, but the cramp in my leg, an ache in my back, and getting out of bed feels all of 53.

Yet, I wouldn’t go back to being young unless I could carry all my wisdom backward with me. Even then, no one takes youth very seriously. Professionalism accompanies age, like the clear sound of opportunity at every corner, if you’ve been wise with your gifts.

I look around at my home, my car, my things, and my gardens and think, I like what I have gathered. Each bauble reminds me of someone or something precious. The rest I have had to let go of.

I remember the first time I bought a brand new car. Every day I would worry about nicks and scratches. When I got my current car, I felt as if I wanted to put a scratch directly on it, so that I would be reminded not to be so careful. I find it hard to enjoy the things in life we try to protect from change. I owned a Faberge egg once. I kept it in the original gold box until I ended up selling it.

Fortunately, as humans age, we gather worth. I know who I am and don’t have to fight to accept myself. I enjoy the pleasures of having credit, AARP, and a home closer to reverse mortgage. Attributes that I have built from youth are now paying off in the end, as I retire into years that ought to be more peaceful and full of love. Age comes with its benefits, most days.

“No more struggle,” is my motto, and “make laws against regrets!”

I have a few friends, older than I, who feel as if they are going in the wrong direction. They have struggle with finance, relationship, and their health isn’t so great. I wonder in despair how life could be so cruel to them. Do we not deserve to quietly depart as we have weathered many storms? Who would deny the elderly health and all that they would need to live at peace? Yet, the story of the world doesn’t reflect this at all.

I have an elderly neighbor who is failing rapidly. She is the sweetest lady, lives alone, and recently had to let go of her precious puppy dog because she was too frail to care for him. She has two children nearby. Why would they take away the little joy she has at the end? Are we not caring for our elderly because we’re too selfish and don’t have time? Something feels amiss.

I guess it’s a little easier for me to understand the premise of taking care of our elderly because I take care of my 81-year-old mom. Yes, it’s not easy sometimes. She can be cantankerous and annoying. But she also loves me more than any human being could. She is helpful when she has the strength, and in turn, feels as if her opinion counts more than anyone else’s. But you have to love her moxie.

Most of my friends think she is wonderful and see our relationship as something special. After being without her most of my childhood, it has become a blessing to make amends for the past as we get older together and plant the seeds of love that youth lacked. It’s never too late to mend the fences from times gone by. I’ve seen this gift in both my father’s and my mother’s latter years. I’m glad I’ve had the chance with each to re-establish a healthy relationship.

Friends have asked me what I want for my birthday. None of them can afford the new Lexus convertible I lust for, so I’ll be happy with them to just gather around me and say a prayer for peace—not just for me—but for the world.
