Double Nickels #birthdays #DivineMind #ScienceofMind #SOM #SpiritualLiving

Today is my 55th birthday. Someone keenly called it my Double-Nickel Birthday. I had never heard of this expression before, but the sound of it stuck in my brain. Above all, I would wish for myself, and anyone reading this, that by 55, we would find the gumption to do what we want, with who we want, and as much as we want—with joy. Thus, we shall reap the vast rewards of the universe with prosperity, joy, and love all around us. That is my hope for my birthday. And, if you’re thinking it is vain for me to be wishing good thoughts for myself, you miss the entire concept of creative thinking and Divine Mind.

If we wait for others to give us—even good wishes—we have waited too long. We must take hold of our lives with the strength of Atlas and begin to speak and think into our lives the exact image of our desires—without letting any negativity hinder us.

It is time. If you have landed on the double nickel point and haven’t reached into your heart to find your greatest joys in life, it is high time you do.
Here’s to 55 years of life! Cheers!

HEY... I HAVE AN IDEA. BUY ONE OF MY BOOKS FOR MY BIRTHDAY. IT WILL HELP US BOTH! CHECK IT OUT BELOW! LOL (Honestly, thanks for your mental and financial support always. Your love helps sustain me and the flow of good that comes through me, because we are all one!)

Symptomatic and Problematic Pain #pain #sufferingwithpain #holisticmedicine #drugreactions #arthriticpain

As we get older our bodies seem to attract pain. Every day we wake up with a different malady. At eighty-something, my mother discusses her pains, pills, and doctor’s appointments more than she talks about what she’s making for dinner and what’s on television. In fact, almost everyone I know at that age has come to that. So, should we expect that when we reach into our eighties that our bodies are simply going to be an amalgam of so many diseases and maladies that our entire focus in life will be on physical care? Or does a better way exist?

If anyone thought about preparing for being older by watching his diet, exercising daily, meditating, and using holistic practices—it was I. In fact, at eighteen, I was a vegetarian, doing juice fasts, getting facials, exercising daily, and developing a spiritual practice, when all my friends were out smoking and drinking. Did it help me? I’m not so sure. I do look younger than most of them, but I believe I feel a little older than the majority.

When I first began to experience really horrific pain in my back, hips, and legs, I spent an entire year still teaching my yoga classes, taking loads of glucosamine, and refusing to believe that my body needed help. I kept saying to myself, “How can this be? I’m the healthiest person I know!” And, yet, there I was, in the doctor’s office, almost in tears, because I had trouble at forty years old getting out of bed in the morning.

I remember, before my father passed away, all the aches pains he had in his back and legs. When he got up from a chair, his entire body would quiver. I had been experiencing the same symptoms, and I simply was afraid I had turned into him.

The physician told me that I probably had a bad case of arthritis, which was inherited. (Those damn genes!) I probably did nothing to get the disease. In fact, how I lived my life was probably keeping the arthritic condition at bay for a long time. But soon, the inevitable caught up with me. The doctor told me that my pain could be lessened by taking an anti-inflammatory and using some medication to reduce the effects of the pain.

The physician was correct. After I began the medication, two weeks went by before I was able to lead a completely normal life again. I kicked myself in the pants a few times because I had spent so many days in pain that I had even become somewhat depressed. Just a couple of pills to manage my symptoms was so simple to have a normal life again.

However, what happens with most pills is you either become resistant to them or they have some severe side effects. So, you have to decide, do I want to continue having a better quality of life with the pills, so I’ll take another pill to continue this quality of life; or, do I stop taking the pill, go back to the original pain and try a different approach?

I have done both. I tried every form of homeopathic treatment from massage to acupuncture to reiki. You name it, I tried it. In fact, I did all of those before I ever tried conventional medicine. And, also, spent a lot of money trying every gadget on the Internet that promised to reduce pain. Where did I end up? Back at the doctors, begging for my medication again.

I don’t know if there is an answer to the problem of getting older or inheriting disease from your relatives. It’s just life! So, keep dancing through, as much as you can. When you come to an impasse, you simply have to make choices that will help you keep a quality of life that is joyful, peaceful, and pain-free. Usually, this is my litmus test for any medication, as I’ve come down to one incredibly simple solve: If I die five years earlier than I normally would have, because I’m increasing my quality of life now with pills that have long-term effects; then, so be it. I’d rather be happy right now and pain free, than managing pain my entire life. The latter, just isn’t life to me.

Just one simple caveat: Quality of life, to me, is being able to do yoga, sit comfortably to meditate, and living pain free.

Still Learning at 50 #aging #gettingolder

I have heard the saying, “when you quit learning, you die!” I had always wondered what it meant, until recently. Three weeks ago, I signed up for an all-weekend acting workshop. This will be the first workshop I’ve done in many years. I have to take CEUs every year to keep up my hypnotherapy license. I take spiritual classes to keep my head in the game. But, I hadn’t taken any opportunities to learn something new.

As I prepared for the class today, I felt an old feeling of excitement, like getting ready for college when I was 18. This morning there was a spring in my step that hadn’t been there in a while. I know that I’m opening my heart, mind, and body to a new experience today that will change my life.

I had lunch with a minister friend, yesterday. He told me a story of a man who had decided at 30, after being in a horrific accident, that he would spend the rest of his life living out of the normal paradigm, seeking to do work that would change the world for the better. He wanted to live an unconventional life. One of his goals was to travel to every country in the world. In ten years he accomplished his first goal. He blogged about it every day and ended up having a million followers. When he returned he began doing seminars and writing books that would change many lives. His entire platform was unconventional, but his intention was spot on: to live life being led by Spirit.

I have made that same dedication in my life about a year ago. I have never experience more good in my life. However, I have also not been attached to so little in my life, as well.
Changing your mind about your next experience has much to do with letting go of the fear that your belongings are your life. I released my social life, my business, and my personal intention to wait in the silence and let Spirit teach me many more lessons than I had ever learned before. I was scared, impatient, and needed to have worth immediately, when I began.

Now, I realize that every moment I experience something new and take with me into the now all that I know, all that I want to be, and all that I can contribute the world that I make a difference. You, too, can live life on the edge and experience anything you may want and desire in this life. But, you must be ready let go of your old story for a fabulous new one!

Aging #gettingolder #aginggracefully #holisticmedicine

Everyday, I look at myself in the mirror, especially in the morning, and find new age spots, wrinkles, extra weight, hair loss in places I want hair, and hair accumulating in my nose and ears. Growing older takes patience! Everyday, I must decide I’m not just dying, but actually here on the earth to make an impact and to learn my daily lessons—especially about being compassionate to others and myself. If I don’t remind myself of these facts, I might spend the day trying to counteract the aging process for my Ego’s sake with facials, massages, creams, and the like.

I’m usually the person in the room who is always cold. I wear sweaters in the summer in air-conditioned places. In the winter, if I’m in the north, I have one more sweater, layer and coat than most people. However, yesterday, the entire day I sweated like a pig in heat. I had to apply deodorant five times, because I smelled of Lipton onion soup. I was disgusted with my body.

I happened to be having dinner with a doctor friend that evening, who checked my blood pressure. It was 179 over 120, which is really, really high. He asked me a series of questions about drugs and medications I had been taking, trying to decide if anything would be affecting my heart. However, when he asked me the questions, I didn’t realize that I had been using a holistic cure for stomach acid in the form of Sodium Bicarbonate, sometimes 3-4 times in a day. I had forgotten that the salt content could affect my blood pressure. Worse yet, I have been watching my sister with congestive heart failure and my mother who has recently had a triple bypass do the same thing as I. Crazy us!

In a time when our bodies are becoming more and more fragile, we should be careful about everything we put in our mouths, including holistic cures. Western medicine may be corrupt in many ways, but it has taught us the mechanics of how the body reacts to certain drugs and chemical stimuli, including vitamins and herbs. A good way to live and age gracefully is to use holistic medicine to prevent problems. But when the issues occur, we may consider that western medicine can provide the cure we may need in that moment. For me, I was happy for the advice to get back on the Statins that I had been prescribed. My heart rate was normal this morning and I don’t feel restless and hot anymore.

Maybe old age isn’t so bad. Time has actually given me some sense balance along the way.

Old Age Approaching Quickly

Old Age Approaching Quickly

I began the celebration of my birthday by getting a facial that practically burnt off all my old skin. My face looks 40 right now, but the cramp in my leg, an ache in my back, and getting out of bed feels all of 53.

Yet, I wouldn’t go back to being young unless I could carry all my wisdom backward with me. Even then, no one takes youth very seriously. Professionalism accompanies age, like the clear sound of opportunity at every corner, if you’ve been wise with your gifts.

I look around at my home, my car, my things, and my gardens and think, I like what I have gathered. Each bauble reminds me of someone or something precious. The rest I have had to let go of.

I remember the first time I bought a brand new car. Every day I would worry about nicks and scratches. When I got my current car, I felt as if I wanted to put a scratch directly on it, so that I would be reminded not to be so careful. I find it hard to enjoy the things in life we try to protect from change. I owned a Faberge egg once. I kept it in the original gold box until I ended up selling it.

Fortunately, as humans age, we gather worth. I know who I am and don’t have to fight to accept myself. I enjoy the pleasures of having credit, AARP, and a home closer to reverse mortgage. Attributes that I have built from youth are now paying off in the end, as I retire into years that ought to be more peaceful and full of love. Age comes with its benefits, most days.

“No more struggle,” is my motto, and “make laws against regrets!”

I have a few friends, older than I, who feel as if they are going in the wrong direction. They have struggle with finance, relationship, and their health isn’t so great. I wonder in despair how life could be so cruel to them. Do we not deserve to quietly depart as we have weathered many storms? Who would deny the elderly health and all that they would need to live at peace? Yet, the story of the world doesn’t reflect this at all.

I have an elderly neighbor who is failing rapidly. She is the sweetest lady, lives alone, and recently had to let go of her precious puppy dog because she was too frail to care for him. She has two children nearby. Why would they take away the little joy she has at the end? Are we not caring for our elderly because we’re too selfish and don’t have time? Something feels amiss.

I guess it’s a little easier for me to understand the premise of taking care of our elderly because I take care of my 81-year-old mom. Yes, it’s not easy sometimes. She can be cantankerous and annoying. But she also loves me more than any human being could. She is helpful when she has the strength, and in turn, feels as if her opinion counts more than anyone else’s. But you have to love her moxie.

Most of my friends think she is wonderful and see our relationship as something special. After being without her most of my childhood, it has become a blessing to make amends for the past as we get older together and plant the seeds of love that youth lacked. It’s never too late to mend the fences from times gone by. I’ve seen this gift in both my father’s and my mother’s latter years. I’m glad I’ve had the chance with each to re-establish a healthy relationship.

Friends have asked me what I want for my birthday. None of them can afford the new Lexus convertible I lust for, so I’ll be happy with them to just gather around me and say a prayer for peace—not just for me—but for the world.

You Are Still Good

You Are Still Good

What made you think you weren’t still good? Did you happen to take a look at your expiration date this morning and think: hmmm, that once-tender meat is looking a little fatty and old? Or did you notice that your joints weren’t working the same way that they used to? Perhaps, tomorrow the warranty is up on your knees.

We absolutely only have a certain amount of time on this earth. No one knows how long that is. From the moment we come out of the birth canal, we begin to age. Did you ever notice how nice a baby’s breath smells? Compare that to your own in the morning. Something is dead in there. But what?

Everything that we think in our minds is expressing itself in our bodies. Are you thinking sick thoughts?

I’m not one of those fanatics who believes that all sickness comes from the thoughts we think. But I’m willing to stretch out beyond my comfort zone and say that what we think certainly impacts our bodies.

If you think that you are too old to exercise, then you haven’t tried chair yoga or bouncing on a fitness ball. If you are sedentary and can’t get up off your chair, there are compression exercises you can do with your hands and legs. Okay, if you can’t move your arms and legs, exercise your mind.

In theory, yoga is more of a meditative practice than an asana (movement) practice by virtue of its purpose. Yoga was meant to make you acutely aware of your body and breath, so that you could let the physical go during meditation. The yogis believed that God is the breath. Breath is what animates and moves the physical body. When you die, the first thing that happens is you stop breathing. So, it stands to good reason that something vastly holy and auspicious happens when we discover the meaning of the breath.

In most meditative practices, the objective is to simply watch the breath and not control it at all. In this process we become one with it or observers of it. Either way we alter the mental state enough to enter into a new paradigm of thought—nirvana, some call it.

If I can reach nirvana as a 53 years old, then I am just as useful and powerful as I was when I could do ten pirouettes and split jumps. Trust me, power jazz ain’t happening anymore. My body has its limitations. But my mind certainly doesn’t. I’m willing to believe that today, my very essence is more vital than it was when I was in my twenties. I believe this because every day, as my body diminishes in power, I become stronger spiritually.

Perhaps, that’s exactly the way the Creator intended. This way, we will have learned and experienced the world when we are young. Then realize that the world has little to offer compared to a spiritual connection rich with peace and unlimited joy. In fact, when this spiritual realization occurs, our physical lives become richer. Not only do we understand and know the difference between good and bad, but we have the knowledge to choose what’s best for us experientially.

I have never wanted to go back in time and relive my past. I still believe that, even though my body gets closer to its expiration date, I still have a lot of good and wonderful days ahead. You can believe that too.
