Religion vs. Spirituality #spiritualadvice #unity #scienceofmind #newthought #metaphysics

Before I became a metaphysician in New Thought, I was a religious leader in a very bible-based church and wore the banner proudly, often too proudly. So, I know the difference between spirituality and religion all too well. The definitions are not the same and can be perceived very easily with a one simple question.
If you ask someone who is spiritual what he believes, you may hear something like this: “I was brought up in religion, but I have spent most of my life searching for truth, reading books about other religions and beliefs, studying yoga, meditating, and opening my mind to anything that doesn’t judge people. I cannot believe that God would judge his creation. I mean, I don’t believe in hurting others or the Earth. I want to be the best person I can be. I can have just as beautiful moment in a walk on the beach as I can talking spirituality in a church.”
If you ask the same question to a religious person, you will hear something more like this: “I believe everything that the Bible, the Koran, or the Talmud says. It is sacred law. All that I need to believe is in that book.”
This is the basic difference. The spiritual person is a seeker of Truth as it pertains to his or her personal growth, always searching, praised for her unique choices, and usually not judging other’s beliefs.
The religious person is one who seeks Truth from the Source or book that is proclaimed to be the sacred message of his or her particular religion. Usually, with that belief, comes a judgment that others are wrong or will suffer the consequences of living a life other than that version of their truth.
I have known many people of all types. When I come across a religious person I get the feeling I am going to be judged almost immediately. I can feel the hair on my arms raise and my armor coming up, rightfully so.
Once, I was with ten friends celebrating my birthday at a well-known restaurant in Nashville, Tennessee. We were waiting to be seated, standing in the bar of the restaurant, when I came across an old student of mine, who took vocal lessons with me for three years. I introduced her to my then partner just before he excused himself to go to the restroom. The conversation sounded like this between my old student and I:
“So, how the heck are you? Are you still singing?” I asked.
She replied, holding a large martini in her hand, “Bo, I have to tell you this—in love—that if you continue on this path of homosexuality, you will go to hell. I love you, but I don’t want to see you in the fires of Satan.”
I replied, “Thanks for sharing,” and walked away, kind of rattled.
This wasn’t the first time something had happened to me, like this. It was such a juxtaposition of feelings going from the happiness of 10 friends celebrating my birthday to her negative stance about who I was and her judgment of my life. I had to go outside and shake off her negativity, before I could continue with the celebration. Still, I think of that day with caution. I don’t ever want to get to the place in my life or in my belief that I would call out someone’s behavior in public to them and commit them to the darkest eternal life. Her banner of self-righteousness will always be my litmus test to be nonjudgmental and honor all beliefs that do not hurt others or the Earth.
Religion? What exactly is it? Is it another word for judgment, self-righteousness, or sheep being led to the slaughter because they have no mind of their own? Or is it people who have stopped looking for Truth in the beauty of a sunrise or the vastness of the ocean? Is it someone who accepts that the God who created the heavens and earth could actually be contained the pages of a book?
I proudly wear the hat of a man who is spiritual, but not religious. If you are a person who is like me, make sure that when you discuss your beliefs, you begin by making a clear differentiation between your right-winged counterpart; otherwise, the person you speak with may just politely excuse himself.

Accepting Your Wings #retirement #spiritualadvice #psychology #scienceofmind #lifecoach

After a many years of work at an airline, I had a friend receive a beautiful golden pendant in the shape of wings. She wore it proudly on her jacket for a very long time. Then, after about three years, she retired and the wings disappeared from her garment. I asked why. She answered, “I spend my days wondering what I should do with my life, how I could make a difference in the world, and really just managing my life. All of this just makes me feel so hopeless sometimes. I don’t really I deserve the wings, anymore, I guess.”
With her permission and without mentioning her name, I asked this client if I could share her predicament, because so many seniors live with the same feelings. I have taken care of my mother for 9 years now and have watched as her motivation for each day is about what to make for dinner and when she should do the laundry. She has given up on making her life anymore than what it is already. She has given in to social consciousness that would say that after 65 we should retire, give up on life, and simply relax. I don’t know about you, but I certainly have no intention of retiring at 65. At 55, I feel as if I’m just beginning to understand who I am and how to implement my Divine Intention.
If you are a senior or approaching retirement, have a plan as you continue into the future. The worst thing we could do in life is quit creating. We are made in the order and fashioned in the image of a creator. If we stop doing what we were created to do, we will eventually wither away and die.
Conversely, I also know a woman who has successfully found her niche as a senior. When her husband died and she was forced to retire from a long-time job, all of her kids were out of school and married, she felt like she had nothing to live for. Her entire life was based on tending to everyone, which is the case for many people who lose site of dreams. She needed to edit her life’s story to become someone useful and viable again.
In her case, she heard the call and accepted the challenge to take the great step forward into a life that became exciting and wonderful again. She joined senior groups, contacted old friends in the same situation as she, she started visiting her family once a year in different parts of the world, and she made plans to continue life, not stay stagnant. Every time I see her, I’m amazed at how wonderful she looks for her age. I think she is over 80. No one, however, would guess she is even 70.
Creating your life as you go forward sometimes takes editing the next page, or rewriting a new story. Don’t be afraid to take steps into unknown areas and take chances. Life is always about moving forward and changing. Once you lose sight of that, you often lose your vision too. A quote in the bible says, “People without a vision will perish.”
But, if you move forward without fear, you may discover something wonderful that you never imagined was behind door two.

Why Do We Keep Making the Same Mistakes in Relationships? #relationshipadvice #psychology #spiritualadvice #lifecoach

Nothing feels more like a failure as when you set out to make a correct, well-thought-out decision. You decide on your intent and a pragmatic schedule of how, when, and where you will embark on your new idea. You even meditate about it, feeling as if you have done your best to decrease the likelihood of failure by taking it to prayer. Yet, often you sit in the same cesspool of tears wondering how you could have made the same exact mistake again—different characters, same plot, new relationship!
Everyday, you laugh at your decreasing desire to even try in relationship. Even opening your heart to one feel as if it takes too much energy. You have found amazing people with hearts of gold, and yet something, somehow, takes the relationship somewhere other than where you desire. You pray and treat for it and believe with all of your heart, defying all of your fear of the anxiety of the past? Yes, yes, and yes again.
Once again, though, you find yourself standing at the grave of yet another relationship that has morphed into a beautiful friendship, but not the intimate one you prayed for. What is left to do but release and let go?
This morning, as I meditated, I used a mantra that a psychologist and minister gave me two years ago:
“Relationship is what it is, not what I make of it.”
Personally, I have NOT lost hope that a loving, long-abiding, intimate relationship could happen for me. How and from where, I have no idea. I simply know this much:
  1. I am open to it.
  2. When I see it, I will know the right questions to ask so that I won’t make the same mistakes again.
  3. I will follow the path to intimacy slowly, despite any sexual desire.
  4. I will become friends and prayer partners before I miss the opportunity, and the relationship flows into a dream space of loving intimacy that seems to block out all sense.
Relationship is, at best, the hardest human conundrum. The reason this is so is because it takes more than just 100% of your work. It relies on 100% of someone else’s work, which you cannot—even if you try—control. If you are comfortable with the idea that you must control every part of your life, the likelihood of right relationship happening for you is probably not going to happen very soon. My best friends and family who are in relationship all suffer from the same problems as single people do, interestingly enough, loneliness, anger, desperation, and intimacy issues, as well.
No one person can solve your intimate problems. You must get comfortable with yourself, love spending time with you, and cherish and honor the peace that “no relationship” offers at this point in your life. Peace over drama wins every time.
