Arco Iris: A Rainbow of Promise #rainbow #DivineMind #ScienceofMind #SOM #SpiritualLiving

Yesterday, I had a date with someone new—again! It was an initial date for coffee. Blah! Blah! Blah! On my way to the date, I felt sleepy, nauseous, and downright unwilling to open my heart to one more bad dating experience.

However, just as I was thinking the thought, I saw the most beautiful rainbow (Arco Iris in Spanish) begin from one end of Fort Lauderdale to the other side of Hollywood, from the ground, arc over the city, and then to the ground on the other side. Half of the arch in Hollywood even had a double rainbow.

I could not stop taking pictures of the rainbow. I wanted to capture the entirety of it from end to the other. Then I realized I, by taking pictures, I was missing the beauty. So, I sat there in complete awe trying to allow my heart to absorb all of the energy it held for me. Honestly, I had never seen a rainbow anywhere quite like this one. The colors were majestic from one side to the other. And it stayed in the sky for at least 10 minutes while I was driving.

In those moments, I began to thank the man who had invited me to coffee. Not for the date, of course, but I thanked him for getting me to that place on the highway to see this majestic, spiritual painting in the sky. For me, rainbows have always appeared in times when I needed a kick in the butt to help me remember that a divine promise exists in the entire universe for wholeness, truth, peace, and all of the prosperity I could ever want. The only obstacle to any of these things is my own mind and the strength I give the manifestations of my past. Before that moment, many manifestations of my past collected in my mind.

I went to the destination of my date, a Starbucks—of course, on Sunrise Boulevard. I sat in my car waiting for my date to answer a text for 15 minutes and was just about to leave, when I finally received a text back from the date. His movie had gotten out later than he had expected and he had his phone on silent. So, we met, had a nice talk, ended up sharing dinner and, also, decided to meet again today for a walk on the beach. Who knows.
But, and here is the big butt! I refuse to put any limitations on the present—today. I owe this feeling to the experience that I had last night with the rainbow. No matter where the experience takes me with this date, or any date for that matter, the lesson was learned.

Thank you God for my personal rainbow and for promises!

Point Me Toward Tomorrow! #goodbyepast #spiritualadvice #psychology #SOM

If we hold on to the past and won’t let go of it, then how can Source replace that negativity with something wonderful? You have to make room for your good, by letting go of that which has not served you well. Just let it go! If you think you will change the past by thinking about it, hoping for something different to have happened, or wishing for revenge, you will stay stuck forever! Again, let it go!

I just saw a friend’s post from my old neighborhood as a child. He was with his beautiful little family, happily married, and currently—he is president of our high school class—which means he keeps up with all of our classmates until the next class reunion.

When we were both children, we were in similar familial situations with an abusive, alcoholic parent, a troublesome home life, and little social acceptance. At the last class reunion, I watched him in amazement, now outspoken, very motivated, and equally happy. What a perfect picture of the song from A Chorus Line: “What I Did for Love.” The lyrics are:
Kiss the day goodbye.
And point me toward tomorrow.
Wish me luck, the same to you.
And I can’t regret, what I did for love…
Gone, love is never gone as we travel on,
Love is what we’ll remember!

Reviewing the past to help us grow is one of the few things we can do with the memories of the past that is actually helpful. But, once you have finished your review, you must, once again, let go!

Before I left Nashville for my life-changing journey to South Florida, I wrote my memoir. I wrote it for myself. I called it “Learning Alone.”

It reads like a novel, moving from one disaster to the next, especially where relationship is concerned. Unintentionally, I had recapitulated my broken childhood in almost every intimate relationship in my life. After rereading the memoir, I should have thrown the book away. However, I decided that I would go one step further and publish it, to help anyone else through Anxious Attachment issues, which was my main psychological problem. Not many people have read the book, probably because it’s sad and carries with it little hope, until the end, when I finally wake up from the drama of the past and LET GO!

Trust me, as my friend from childhood did, and I just recently did, letting go is the key to a happy future. Tomorrow can hold with it anything you put your mind to, but you have to take steps to go boldly into the future. As Dr. Arleen Pitcock quoted yesterday at the Center of Spiritual Living:

“A vision without action is just a story of what might have been!”

Four Steps to Peace: Walking in the Moment #positiveoutlook #now #TibetanBuddhism

The fabric of Tibetan Buddhism is based on living in the present moment. Nothing in the past or in the future is real. Only the very moment that you live exists for you. Every moment you spend in the past or the present is a moment spent missing the only reality you have! Many people in Western religions and cultures have adopted this premise, because it simply makes sense.
All of our anxiety exists because we either live in the past, expect too much from the future, or avoid the present moment. So, how do we stay present, love the moment—no matter what it brings, and keep our minds from operating in the future?

This is how Majjhima Nikaya says to train your mind (this is not for the fainthearted):

“Monks, even if bandits were to carve you up savagely, limb by limb, with a two-handled saw, he among you who (would) let his heart get angered even at that would not be doing My bidding. Even then you should train yourselves: ‘Our minds will be unaffected and we will say no evil words. We will remain sympathetic, with a mind of good will, and with no inner hate. We will keep pervading these people with an awareness imbued with good will and, beginning with them, we will keep pervading the all-encompassing world with an awareness imbued with good will — abundant, expansive, immeasurable, free from hostility, free from ill will.’ That’s how you should train yourselves.”

Secondly, “A person of integrity is grateful and thankful. This gratitude, this thankfulness, is advocated by civil people.”(Anguttara Nikaya)

Third, Buddhism has always emphasized the practice of dana, or giving. Giving hasn’t been seen purely as the exchange of material possessions, however; giving in Buddhist terms also includes non-tangibles such as education, confidence, and wisdom.

And at last, use MINDFULNESS to fill your life. This, of course, is an example of another fundamental Buddhist practice. When we’re mindful we stay in the present moment, and really pay attention to our experience. Walking meditation, and even eating, can be ways of savoring everyday moments. In being present, we dwell in the present without obsessing about the past or future, and this ultimately bring radiant happiness:

They sorrow not for what is past,
They have no longing for the future,
The present is sufficient for them:
Hence it is they who appear so radiant.

Carrying Around the Dead! #livingintheNOW #lifelessons #spiritualrecovery

Can you imagine that if every time someone important to you passed away, you had to carry around the corpse? Often, with the death of a relationship, a job, or a friendship, we tend to do the same thing—psychologically, which weighs us down much the same as it would, if we carried around a real body. The dead weight is too much of a burden for anyone to maneuver, as our lives are full enough with the present moment and future commitments.

I have used a hypnosis technique for many people who tend to hold on to things for far too long. The idea is that you imagine going through your life, walking from the beginning of a tunnel to the light at the end of the tunnel, collecting mementos in a basket from people, friends, lovers, teachers, family, and jobs. You place everything in the basket that you think shaped and molded you into that very special person you are.

At the end of the tunnel, you find that your basket is full of so many “things” that it is much too heavy to carry. I ask you to imagine that there is an angel or spirit at the end of the tunnel waiting for you. She asks you to cross a large gap into a heavenly place. But you can’t jump to that heaven with the heavy basket. You must make a choice to either experience the joy and peace of heaven or hold on to the things in the basket.

For most, the choice is easy. Let go of the old to experience all that Spirit has for you in the future. But, many people can’t decide if they will disappear if they let go of their baggage. They believe that who they are is dependant upon all of the mementos in the basket.

The truth is, though, you are not your past or anything from your past. You may have been shaped by the past, but it is time to let go of the positive and the negative things that keep you from jumping into a new and spiritual place of bliss. Your fears, your trust, and your future depend upon the faith of letting go. You can’t fill a glass that is already full.
When you let go of the basket, you realize that everything you are, will continue to be, even without all of the heavy weight. In fact, you are able to be more of you, as you let go and let Spirit fill you with power, prosperity, and the truth of the NOW.

Rummaging Around in My Humanness

When I think of the one thought that can keep me from manifesting my authentic power, my dreams, and my greatest purpose on earth, it is rummaging around in the past. In the past, I cannot see the future; I cannot live in the present moment and experience the wonder of it; and I cannot honor God and myself. When I realize my only focus is working out the past, perhaps, it is time to let go of what already happened and move on.

I have spent many months literally writing my story—I wrote a book about myself, my actually story—to be able to reread it when I feel like I’m stuck. One day, as I was editing it for publishing, I realized, I couldn’t look at it one more day without feeling stuck in the emotion of the past. I actually was being drained of vital energy by editing the book. What I learned is that yesterday holds the possibility of keeping us in the unanswered questions and on the debilitating ledge of speculation. Who needs this kind of energy when the world and the people in it need your power to help them and have compassion and love with abandonment?

Today, I woke up and did my early morning meditation. My primary focus was this: God’s expanding creation and the amazing power exists in even one atom of pure God. How far and how great can I imagine?

As I meditated on the wonder of God, I realized that I am part of that amazing creation, which means that I contain one of those miraculous atoms of God. With just one of those atoms, I can create and manifest all the power of Jesus and the prophets of old and even more than that, so the scriptures say. “With the faith of a grain of a mustard seed I can move mountains.” (Matt. 17:20)

A friend left a message on his wall on Facebook this morning that said: Why are we trying to understand and get along with individual people, when what we should be doing is finding our oneness with God. With that oneness, we will find that which abolishes separateness.

The Nostalgic Dance

That Nostalgic Dance

I don’t believe we would be human if we didn’t have nostalgia moments. Nostalgia seems to be a part of life. However, I have noticed that when I move into the past with longing and “what ifs,” I notice that I usually end up feeling emotional, or worse yet, depressed. Is nostalgia necessary for a healthy life focused on the present?

I had a Black Lab/German Shepherd named Poco. He used to stand up on his back legs and shake his head from side to side when he would become excited. Eventually, we would encourage him and say, “Poco, do the dance! Do the dance!” He learned that the command meant to do this funny jerking movement. This trick always made company laugh and smile. Poco died about six years ago of cancer.

Can we live life without a slow dance with the past? “Should I have married him?” “Should I have quit my job and taken that opportunity to start my own business?” “Should I have forgiven her and started over, wiping the slate clean?” “Wouldn’t life be better if she were still alive?”

Every year, I make at least one commitment that will last throughout January, if not the entire 365 days. This year, I decided to imagine what would life be like if I lived it completely in the now. I have been trying to act as if I can carry no part of the past into my future. Notice, I’m not saying I believe the past didn’t exist or that it wasn’t important to make me who I am. But I am saying that I no longer need to carry it with me into my future.

In hypnosis, I have always done a session for people who want to let go of something tragic. The session is based on the idea of walking down the long hallway of life, carrying a basket in one hand and walking through the seasons of life collecting objects that represent people, jobs, and relationships—both good and negative. Once you’ve reached the present, a huge gap stands between you and your future. To jump over the gap, you have to let go of the basket, because it weighs you down.

If you think about it, what exactly do you need from the past that will help you with the future? Could you exist without the residual past and all that it brings to your life? This conundrum has stumped many spiritual seekers in the past. I believe one can exist without the hindrance of nostalgia and the past. The only thing the past brings to me is an old road with signs—torn and tattered from the days before.
Can we paint the present and future with flowing beautiful strokes when one arm is holding a heavy basket and the other arm is trying to manage the efforts of balancing your body with the heavy load the past? We end up crooked and safeguarding the past, only to miss the opportunities of the now and the future.

Celebrating a New You

Celebrating a New You

There comes a time in our lives that we have to stop looking behind rocks and digging up graves for answers. We must look for change within ourselves instead of trying to point fingers and blaming those around us for how we turned out. The truth is that we must use all of what we have been and are now every day and honor the past to go on happily with our lives.

I went back to my hometown last weekend for a family and a class reunion. Much of what I discovered in the sparsely populated town was a wasteland. When I got back to the hotel room, I felt like I could drown in my own tears. So many emotions came up from the past. I saw my father closing my hand in the car door and yelling at me, instead of tending to my wound. I heard voices of him yelling, my mother leaving me, and my brother sexually abusing me.

But I also saw an old house taken over by a young couple with children. They had given the home a facelift and added a wooden train and swings for the children in the backyard. Yet, nothing could mask the old pain that seemed to emanate from the surroundings.

The neighborhood had changed. What I saw wasn’t reality. The past warped what I saw with my human eyes. The past morphed my vision by taking me back to old pain and sorrow, things I can’t change now.

So, I cried about it and meditated. When I got quiet, I simply asked God to help me understand why I had come back like a dog returning to his vomit. I also asked that I could bury the past once and for all.

That moment helped me change my sorrow into a grief that was like visiting a gravesite. I knew the person I had been wasn’t actually present in the grave, but yet I could honor the passing of those times and that old person everyone called Bobby.

I came back to Nashville and was in a funk for about a week. I sat with my feelings for a while and realized that this ritual I had gone through was necessary to bury the past. I needed to go to the grave and visit my past to actually see that what was no longer existed. My past had been buried beneath a new neighborhood, a new town, and new people thriving off of the old space.

As I lift my head now and am thankful for all that I had been, I realize that nothing I have in the present, none of the knowledge I possess, and none of what I believe to be true and amazing would be possible without every aspect of my past.

It is time to let it go, to bury it, to honor it, and once and for all turn away from all the causes of who I am. As I do so, I am able to look at the wonderful creation God has made and realize that every choice and every turn has been perfectly crafted to help me be the person I am today. Without it, there would be no blog, there would be no books to write, there would be no protagonist and antagonist to make the stories three dimensional and drive others to change.

Celebrate your new life today. Put aside all that made you who you are. Walk forward into your new life now.
