Should You Ever Compromise Your Truth for the Greater Good? #compromising truth #spirituality #spiritualadvice #spiritualreality

I have a very dear, old friend whom I love a great deal. He has been reading one of my books. I would consider this friend enlightened, loving, compassionate and giving. He considers himself an Atheist. As he has been reading my book, he has been sharing with me about the parts that he feels puts him off about my writing. He, basically, believes all of the spiritual concepts I teach, but when I use words like—God, Jesus, pray to God, Trust in God, Believing in Creator—he shuts down and wants to close the book. The only reason why he has not shut the book and thrown it away (his words) is because he knows me and wants to help me understand how to communicate to an Atheist with more compassionately. He understands that I would never judge him or what he believes.
A few days ago, he finished the book and said, “I wish this book could be mandated for everyone in the world to read!” I was taken aback by those words, since I thought he was only reading it to appease me.
His comment led me to want to know more about what he enjoyed and what words would have stopped him from reading had he not known me. I wanted to reach further out of my own spiritual paradigm to the people who haven’t heard these concepts. Much to my surprise, anything that even resembled the word God or Jesus kind of slapped him in the face as dogma and fairly judgmental.
I talked to a few friends about this. They all suggested that I not compromise what I believe and how I teach it because of one person’s thoughts. However, I still took this lesson to my meditation and have been praying about this with my prayer partner.
My question today is about our Truth and how much we can bend without losing the concepts and framework of our faith that we hold dearly.
When I break this down for myself, I realize that everyone, no matter his or her belief, is made in the same image and shares the same race consciousness as I, whether I choose to believe it or not. Everything came from Source, and we are all headed back to source, which is the bases of Unity. This earth experience is just one of many journeys our souls will move through to gain understanding.
I quote the old saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans.” I can understand that within this statement is a general rule of compassion and respect. I do not have to compromise what I am to conform to the lifestyles of the Romans. In fact, my belief of compassion would allow me to hold fast to love as the highest ideal, even if it meant changing my words or my clothing to respect those who invited me to their Roman home.
I also realized that I use this same concept almost every day in my Life Coaching business. I often bend my words and ideas to be compassionate to the person who is hurting and needs help from me. I’m the one with enough strength and love to look at the bigger picture and bend. I know that by using words that would help my client understand concepts, instead of forcing him or her to accept my words as truth is actually the highest call to love. So, I keep my intention, but change my words. Does it really matter if I’m helping someone?
Truth cannot be changed by words. It can, however, be rearranged and modified to help others move forward to a more enlightened path.

Brush up Your Shakespeare #firstimpressions #change #livingintheNOW

Our world, especially our business acumen, can always change with education. I have taken more classes than I have in a long while. The result is a better memory, more energy, and a feeling as if I’m a student again. This gets me back into a mindset that I’m not finished learning, which is good for anyone’s soul.

The worst place we could be as adults is thinking that we’ve seen or done it all. Every time you look at the world, see a vast array of life and expansive universe that you’ve never noticed. Then, with awe and trepidation, gaze into the beauty as if it will never be there again!

Because, the truth is, beauty is not permanent. Life constantly changes. If you miss an awesome pleasure the first time, another pleasure may come, but it will never be the same as the first. Beauty manifests like a multitude of different snowflakes, never the same. The only consistent thing in life is change! So, make a point of experience all of life in every moment.

Change Happens Through Self-Acceptance #selfacceptance #loveyourself

Many psychologists have said that the hardest person to love is your self. I believe I know why.

Most of us think we are an amalgam of all the things we have accomplished. Add to that our looks. Then subtract all the unforgivable acts we have done. And, voilá, you have our self-image. This is not the truth for me or for you. Who you are is anything but a bunch of accolades. Who you are is a son or daughter of Source—made and created in the image of love and prosperity and wisdom.

When you think of your self, think of all the attributes of Spirit and then imagine being made of those traits. If you are made of the cells of Spirit, then you are one with me, one with Spirit, and one with everything around you. So what is keeping you from believing this truth?

For me, I spent much time looking in the mirror, trying to find my good. I was afraid to look inside, because of what I might see under the cobwebs. But, as I sat silent in the quiet mornings, what began to unfold is an observer self, a spirit companion of sorts that is me, too. From this perspective life began to unfold in a different way.

I suddenly saw my human life as just one manifestation of who I am. My soul, which is boundless, has many ways to express and will continue to express long after this body passes away. So, the key to self-acceptance is to begin by seeing your human relationship to the whole. You are one piece of a very large puzzle, which also makes you an important piece that completes the whole—both in spirit and in body. If you aren’t here on earth, the world changes. So, if you are here, why is not changing for your good and for the good of the entire world?

A prince or princess doesn’t have wave a wand to know s/he has inherited the kingdom. It is already yours!

Is Any Fact Completely True? #change

Every day I go about doing my chores, dreaming, making new friends, nurturing old friendships, and taking care of my family. Along the way I find truths that, sometimes, almost hit me in the head like the old commercials about V-8 juice. Why didn’t I know that? I think. How could this new truth possibly have eluded me all this time? Also, as I travel down the path to revelation, I find deeper truths that seem to negate the nuggets of definitive fact that kept me safe along life’s journey. I begin to wonder if all information I have gathered thus far is just a version of the truth, but not THE truth. If I keep this truth in mind, perhaps, I won’t be beating myself up about not understanding life on a day-to-day basis. Or is this last truth about to change as well?

Let’s look at an example. “God is Love!” This seems to be a reasonable, spiritual fact we can take to the bank. But, suddenly 9-11 happens, and you begin to wonder what LOVE is, if what undergirds all of creation could allow such a travesty. So, you begin to redefine love. “Love is the greatest expression, helping everyone on earth, even when it seems as if what happens in your life is a bad thing. Good will probably come from this. Perhaps, even the greatest lessons of my life could proceed from this one defining moment.”

So, love and its definition keeps changing with your relationship to life and Spirit. The more you get out of yourself and become a compassionate observer, the more perspective you get. Of course, that brings us to the definition compassion. One day you believe that compassion looks loving and caring and selfless, then the next day, you realize in dealing with an family member who is an addict that compassion can be harsh and strong. The truth: everything changes but change, even our definitions of life—especially our definitions of life.

Being open to that change is what makes the difference between someone who is staunch about an opinion (we all know what that looks like) and some 0ne who is open and willing to change with the time and situations of life. I promise you that your life will always be more joyful and at peace if you reach out of any small perspective or definition and clear the slate completely. Let this moment, the very present moment, redefine your world day to day.

Standing Strong in the Emptiness

“Last year was a difficult one with lots of changes.” I’ve heard this comment almost every end of the year for the last twenty years. My answer to that is: With difficulty and change, usually comes a great deal of growth. Even in the midst of the worst pain, the most horrendous circumstances, or the greatest mental stress, one truth always keeps me standing. That one truth is that “this, too, will pass.” Because everything in life changes, I am certain of that one absolute.

So, as we get ready for a New Year, most of us are ready and very willing to make a list of things that didn’t work out quite right last year. I am also ready to fill a large page with dreams I would like to manifest in this new year. I know one very important aspect that I want to follow more than anything and that is to follow my gut. When I look back at all the problems or the mishaps from last year, something inside of me told me—deep in my belly—that I should have left the situation. Yet, I didn’t go anywhere but deeper into the problem. Perhaps, that’s why I felt as if I was being fed to the wolves. Maybe, I was the one doing the feeding.

I have a friend who has been in a very precarious situation of late. She recently said to me, “You could do a lot better,” referring to her friendship with me. I thought to myself, what could possibly cause someone to have that small amount of self-esteem? What ever that “something” is, today is the time to decide to release it and start again. Every day is a chance to make your life better, to put aside the past and begin again.

I have another friend who has been telling me that he has been waking up with a feeling of emptiness, lately. To that, I shared, “Great! That means you have done your work!” That emptiness he feels is a clearing away of all the stuff that didn’t work. Now on this blank canvas, God and he can create a new and better life.

Getting used to emptiness is a difficult place to be, when you have been used to filling your life to capacity, so that you won’t feel the emptiness. I remember the first time, after many years, I was single. That emptiness felt strange and often embarrassing, as if I was wearing my loss on my shoulders. Then, I got the idea from a Tao teaching that the emptiness or darkness is the holiest of places, because in the vast emptiness is where God Creates!

So, take some time today and tomorrow to create two lists: 1.) jot down all the things in your life that did not work and that you now want to release; and 2.) write a list of things you would like to manifest. Let’s commit to a revolution in this year end, instead of resolutions for the new year!

The Law of Impermanence

You have heard it said that the only thing that doesn’t change is change! Nothing tangible is permanent, lasting, or stays the same. Everything in the created world is subject to this law of impermanence, but one thing: Spiritual Law, which doesn’t change.

I can say that spiritual law is immutable because it has been around since the worlds were called into existence—by Its own existence. So, if we need to understand one thing in the world, we should make that one thing the thing itself—spiritual law.

Since I was a tiny child, spirituality always intrigued me. I wondered what God looked like, sounded like, and felt like. I tested human law until it became fallible. Then I compared my humanity with that which doesn’t change, until I came to a place where I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that God had placed into existence something inside of me and inside of every other spirit on earth that allowed access to this undercurrent.

I sensed my oneness with humanity, my oneness with the ocean and the dessert, and my oneness with all things spiritual. All I ever wanted was to know my heavenly parent. I never wanted to be like the prodigal child in the bible. I wanted to be THE child, who knew from the beginning, who the gracious father was in the story. I didn’t want to be lost. So, I secured a spiritual path long before most of my peers.

I began to hitchhike to church at seven, when everyone in my family had lost hope in a higher power. The first spiritual small group I attended, there were only two people under 35—the girl who invited me and I. Cultivating a spiritual path in the midst of people who thought I was a loon for believing in anything that they couldn’t see was difficult, but an even greater task was having no one that even resembled a spiritual template in life. Yet, something inside propelled me forward to awaken that which only Spirit can encourage.

So, understanding law and accepting the impermanence of everything around you is a foreign language to most people. So, don’t take anything you read or feel too seriously. We all are learning the best we can. You’re about to change this instant. Yes, even the way you believe and how you manage your spiritual life consistently changes. You life must enter into impermanence as soon as it becomes a part of the ephemeral world. My belief is that our reality keeps showing us not to trust the tangible, so that we will reach inside for a deeper meaning. That is what I know for you, who are reading this Discovery today.

If you want to invest your time and meditation in anything, let it be focusing in on the mutable, unchangeable spiritual law of the universe.

Building Your Authentic Life: Part II

I don’t imagine that many people exist who can dream about a new life, try to implement it, and not be anxious about how it may turn out or when it will become a reality. Changing your life is difficult in that way. But, the outcome is dependent on our insistence on the truth and our pure belief of our new reality.

I’m not saying that any personal mantra can coerce the universe to change your path. No, the real answer lies in your belief of the Truth. This belief is more like knowing that when you plug in a lamp, the light will illuminate because of the law of electricity. There is no amount of coercion that exists here. Your belief is based on a simple knowledge of the law of electricity.

One other aspect to attaining your dreams is looking at what attracts “flies” to your life. Going back to my Discovery of two days ago, if you keep negative thoughts in your mind, you will attract negativity and disease—like flies to dung—in your mind and in your body. “No man can demonstrate peace and cling to unhappiness,” Ernest Holmes says, which also implies another one of his statements: “No person whose entire time is spent in the contemplation of limitation can demonstrate freedom from such limitation!”

You must become more of what you wish to draw into your life. Or you must become more, in general, to attract a greater good into your life!

I had lunch with a friend who is a delight. She is full of energy, young and beautiful. She has everything going for her. But she has fear about moving forward, gaining new friends in a new city, and basically, trusting the instinct of Divine Consciousness in her life. As a result, her life is at an utter standstill. She must daily prod herself into a new idea about life. If need be, she can sit still for a while and meditate with positive affirmations about moving forward to gain such energy. But, becoming more, expecting more, and moving toward her goal is a necessity to achieving her greater good.

I’ve never met a successful man or woman who sat around hoping for good without taking steps forward toward the future. I’ve also never met a successful person who doesn’t know deep inside that he or she deserves success and is certainly capable of it.

So, our next step in this process is inviting the tools of success into your life. For me, I make recordings of what I want to believe about myself. I speak them into my phone and play them back every chance I get. In fact, I will loop the recording, so that it will play back during my sleep. I want every thought to be in line with what I believe about my future. So, that I can step forward into it with each new day. This is the way to a great good!
Coming Up: More about building your new, authentic life!

Willing to Change

I often find myself standing on the edge of defining my life by asking one conclusive question: Am I willing to be different? If I’m not, then I will be stuck in the same merry-g0-round set of circumstances, never changing, always complaining, and certainly not being good enough, handsome enough, or rich enough to be happy.
What needs to change is not the world around me. What needs to make an about-face is my own perception of my life. Then, the rest of the world will begin to look a lot different. As it stands, if I judge myself less and less, I’ll also judge the world and those around me with an equally compassionate heart.
Sometimes, life hands us hard situations. Everyone goes through times that are difficult. But, often, we find ourselves too close to our issue to get a good perspective. To truly begin to understand you and the world around you, you have to come far enough away from your body to be an observer, a nonjudgmental observer, at that.
We often act look at a problem as if it is a pebble dropped into a thimble, instead of a pebble dropped into the ocean. If you drop a pebble into a thimble, it will cause a loud sound, a diffusion of water, and maybe even knock over the thimble. But if you drop a pebble into the ocean, even on a calm day, it causes barely a ripple in the water. What does this metaphor have to do with change and our own perspective of our world around us?
The pebble is the problem, and the ocean or thimble is your situation. How much impact any situation has on your life is directly related to where you drop the pebble. If you want to take a good look at the problem without becoming too emotionally involved, drop it in the ocean. If you want to be attached to your problem and not see beyond your own grief, drop the pebble into a thimble.
Coming Up: I’ll be speaking more about how to pray—not what to think, but HOW to think effectively, to change your life!

Edit Your Basics: “I Don’t Meet Your Height Requirements” #relationshipadvice

I have finally acquiesced to joining Match.com to set me up with some people who have—like me—decided that they needed some professional help to find a person that is right for him. Also, it may help me to get my lazy butt off of the couch in the evening, instead of just watching television. One can hope!
Last evening, I saw a man’s profile that was so sweet and romantic. He was equally handsome. I saw that he had read my note to him, so I got excited. However, I didn’t hear from him until many hours later. His note said, “I’m sorry that I don’t meet your height requirements. I’m only 5’6”. But thank you for liking my bio.
I had no idea that I had put 5’6” as my height requirement for a man, but I have no care in the world about how short or tall a person is, if he is the right person. So, I had to go back to the basics and do some editing. Of course, in Bo Sebastian fashion, I have realized that maybe this editing tool is more of a metaphor for my entire life. What in my life—what in your life—have you thought that you are hardwired for, but really, now, it makes little to no difference at all to you?
As I have moved through life with friends, family, and dating, I have realized that I’m willing to accept a lot less than what I thought I needed at twenty. This, of course, is not a bad way. I’m not settling. I just am looking more for compassionate and loving, than I am for that perfect body and smile. In work, I realized that work I MUST be inspired everyday; otherwise, I’m simply not interested in taking part.
In my daily spiritual practice, I’ve discovered that teaching yoga and actually having my own practice is a completely different ballgame. The practice is the key! Teaching can go on hold for now. I need to have something that is mine and that gives me the strength, endurance, and mental aptitude that yoga affords me, everyday.
I have always thought that I needed a certain amount of money to live. Right now, I’m living on 1/3 of what I needed only one month ago. I’m not saying that some of our basic desires have to be fulfilled to be happy. I’m recognizing that I need to go back to the editing phase and change a few things in my subconscious, so that the universe can answer my prayers without a default mechanism weeding out “dudes under 5’7”.” Get my drift?
Most things in life can change in a heartbeat. Sure, height is not one of those. But, if one of my novels or treatments got chosen to be a feature movie, my entire financial world would change in an instant. If I got a huge publishing deal from one of my books, my finances could change immediately. So, if someone rich were looking at my profile and thinking—loser!—because I’m not a millionaire, they would certainly be missing out.
You could have a job that you love one day. The next day your company could be bought out and your job dissolved with the transition. Can we be ready for inevitable change in life all the time? This is called trusting in the art of uncertainty!
Coming Up: I’ll be talking about the art of Uncertainty in the next few days. Tune in and find out more about this topic!

Anticipation of Change #Change #releasingthepast

Anticipation of Change
#Change #releasingthepast

I have been on the precipice of change for almost a month now. Every day, I have to pray to God that I contain my anxiousness enough to live in the present and to continue to hold on to the premise that “expectations are prepackaged resentments.”

I remember a time in life when I had $500 in the bank, was 21 years old, and living in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania with my mother, sister, and her 1-year-old son. I received a phone call from a director friend (who has recently passed away of cancer) in NYC asking if I wanted to sublet his apartment for the summer. He would charge me $250 a month, which was amazingly cheap, if I would just take care of a few things for him while he was away at summer stock. He needed an answer the next day, which would mean I would be on a bus headed for a city I had only visited once and was too overwhelmed to even consume the vastness of its danger, magnificence, and opportunity. However, I had been dreaming of New York since I was young. So, without hesitation, I said yes.

I was on a bus to NYC the next week with only two suitcases holding everything I would need to audition, live, and survive. I had no prospects of a job, but I knew I could do just about anything, if it would mean surging toward my dream. So, in my heart, I had no qualms about finding that one perfect job that solved my financial problem of having the money for the rent the next month, classes, and food.

I had a college roommate, who, also, has since died of diseases related HIV Disease, who worked as a waiter in a great restaurant. He introduced me to the owner. She was Italian and liked me, immediately. I began to trail Rick the next day and enjoyed 2 years of working at The Fives, which I believe still exists. Life seemed to flow like water from a fountain. I even got my Actor’s Equity card in the first month I was there, which is unheard of. I had the fire in my loins that it took to make effective change and a dream that had carried with it no shadows of despair.
Today, I’m older and have had much loss and have expected way too much of life. However, I realize that the power, the dream, and the recognition that Life is on my side, even when I believe it isn’t, remains with me, just as it did when I was twenty-one. You see, even my partner leaving, my best friend moving to Thailand, and my mother having a blocked carotid artery all in the same week was a shove toward the future that I needed to make this “Encore Career” move.

I feel fortunate to be in this moment, because life is surging through my veins again like a vital energy I haven’t felt in years. I have a new relationship that looks amazingly promising, a new publishing company I began a month ago, with 2o of my books, healing Mp3s, and a yoga video. My boss at the YMCA has offered to introduce me to 3 of the supervisors at neighboring Y’s in south Florida to teach yoga. And some of my current coaching clients are going to stay with me on Face Time.

The only thing that stands in my way is my own anxious thoughts about what to expect from the next moment. I am currently using my down time to meditate to extract these unrealistic beliefs that life should be in my timing, not God’s. I believe this with all my heart and I pray to release expectation, which has no spiritual, nutritional value. These are the only two hindrances that can keep anyone from essential and mortal change.
