This Is the Moment

Last week, I settled into my work with trepidation about everything I had to accomplish. Two of my greatest fears were met very quickly at seminar I conducted, and then at an audition. I noticed in each instance that the moment was much easier than I had imagined in my mind. I repeating affirmations that I was offering myself as a conduit for good and love. As I did so, much of the anxiety seemed to slough off, as the moment came into greater focus.

Yesterday, however, I heaped upon myself a great responsibility. I decided that, since my new church had never heard me sing, that I had to be better than everyone had heard or was wondering. So, I rehearsed the four songs for this special gala service for days, going over and over the parts I struggled with to make every part of the songs as perfect as I could make them. Then, midweek, I began to get sick, as everyone around me was also getting head colds and sore throats. I convinced myself that all of my efforts would be for naught if I succumbed to the symptoms.

The one great effort I made was to stave off the sickness. I took care of myself to the nth degree. I slept. I gargled. I did the netti pot. I took prophylactic medications. I warmed up my voice every day, singing full out only when I needed to. I convinced myself that, though my body was aching and tired, I would not allow my vision for this Sunday to perish as a result of self-sabotage, which is what I believed the symptoms of sickness were.

I treated for myself: “Spirit God, power of all, wholeness of the universe, I am one with you. Since Spirit cannot be sick, I also cannot be sick. Since I am showing up for the purpose of Good and Love, I am also not subject to any virus or sickness that is spreading in the human consciousness. This is an illusion, as is my fear and the scratchiness in my throat. I believe this as truth now and no other truths exist. I release this treatment to You and to the law, knowing Spirit moves through me with power to execute all that I do.”

As I continued to meditate on this, I noticed that, indeed, the sickness did not develop. In truth, though, my voice wasn’t in full power. I still didn’t feel any symptoms in my throat, though, but felt some weakness like the flu. I convinced myself that, as long as the sickness didn’t infect my throat, I would be fine for Sunday.

I had gotten up at 5 a.m. to make sure that my voice was on target for 9:30 a.m., which was when the first rehearsal would be on Sunday. I warmed up slowly and without pressure. I never sang in full voice until I actually had to during the rehearsal to do a sound check. Even then, I held back until the live performance.

As I stood up for the first song, I felt a little nervous, but wasn’t overwhelmed. But on the second song, I had no monitor on stage, which meant that I couldn’t hear the music track at all. I felt as though all I could hear was my own voice. I couldn’t tell if the audience was hearing the same thing as I was, so the entire time I was a little uncomfortable, but I put on my brave face and did the best job I could do without being able to hear the background tracks.

As it turned out, the audience had the perfect amount of accompaniment, and I got to focus on just controlling my voice, as it was very loud in the monitor. Now, I believe Spirit was saying in a loud voice: “Listen, Bo, you are all that you believe you are!”

All in all, what I learned about the experience was that living in the moment can sometimes be difficult when you add to your experience life’s expectations and the perceived judgments of others. When I assume that what I will do is being judged and monitored much more than I expected, I wasn’t able to be myself. After the second song, though, when the monitor went out, I decided to let go completely and feel the moment. As I did so, my voice rang out with great gusto and I truly enjoyed being able to share my gifts with the world and specifically with the congregation for the last two songs.

Afterwards, I got loads of great reviews and those who were in the position of judging felt great relief that I was able to deliver the goods at the time I needed to. I’m also thankful for all those who believed in me, because I felt their prayers undergirding my soul and my body.

A Time for Celebration — Dr. Rev. Arleen Bump

Often, we wait for holidays and birthdays to celebrate what should be honored and cherished everyday. However, joy can be garnered in the occasional special day for a great person in your life.

Today, I have the honor of helping my congregation celebrate the 20th anniversary of our minister at our church and her 40th year of ministry in the Centers of Spiritual Living. Rev. Dr. Arleen Bump is a great teacher and minister, in fact, the best teacher I have experienced thus far in life. A wise person said, “When the student appears, the teacher shows up.”

I have been searching for a long time for someone to help me to the next level of my spiritual life. I have read many books with authors beckoning me to a higher consciousness. But, when I came to Florida, my distinct understanding from Spirit was that I would find the teacher that my heart and soul had been searching for.

I have always felt that I had been a student of life. But, I’ve not often felt encouraged to sit under another human to learn about what, I thought, only Spirit could teach with life’s lessons availing themselves daily. With that being said, I wonder, if we all have those special human teachers waiting to help us to our next stage of spiritual growth. Have you been searching for a mentor? If so, how have you been looking and where?

My search began without my knowledge. Suddenly, I had questions that were left unanswered by anyone. Even in my own seeking in meditation and prayer, I felt I had been missing a Divine piece of the puzzle. I sincerely believe that if Spirit had wanted to reveal this piece of the puzzle by divine intervention, I would have gotten it. Sometimes, however, I notice that human relationship and connection are needed to supply the missing pieces with the compassion and empathy needed to plant the seed deep in our hearts. And, of course, Divine Timing is imperative for this to happen.

With a new venture, a new life, a great and exciting step forward, we often need a different outlook. For me, it was a different environment, a move toward family, and the teaching of a different person, with different words, pushing me toward the greatest lessons of my life.

If you feel the need to move forward in your spiritual life, perhaps there is a teacher or mentor just waiting for you to show up. Don’t stop searching. For me, my teacher took ten years to appear. I’m not sure how long Spirit will grace me with this desire to learn from this individual, but I’m enjoying every moment now, especially today, in the celebration of her life’s work.

“Don’t Condemn Yourself” Week

One of the greatest hindrances to growing spiritually and psychologically is condemnation. Condemning yourself is deeply rooted in fear—fear of not being good enough, pretty enough, handsome enough, skinny enough, or smart enough. You name the fear; it will probably fit under the subhead of Fear. One of my favorite authors, if not my favorite one, is Eckhart Tolle. This week, his E-blast was about condemning yourself. I thought I would continue the conversation with my recent take on the subject.

My mother fell yesterday and hurt herself. As she has gotten older, she tends to get lost under her numb feet about once every six months. Usually, her falls are minor. But, yesterday, my sister’s explanation of what happened sound much like this: Mom tried to get down on the floor to exercise and ended up falling on to her head and shoulder. One of her arthritic fingers tried to stop the fall and it ended up getting badly sprained. Mom screamed and moaned to the point that my sister suggested she call an ambulance. When anyone mentions taking Mom to the hospital, she usually calms down. She quieted enough for Cheri to assess her injuries. After checking her completely, Cheri was sure my mother hadn’t broken anything. The fall simply scared Mom, and the injury to her hand was painful.
Later, when I came home, my sister went out to the store. I practiced the piano as my mother went into the kitchen to get herself a bowl of soup. Soon, I heard dishes crashing down onto the floor and countertop. I jumped up from the piano and went to my mother’s aid. At that point, she was hitting herself in the head with her hand, muttering, “I’m so stupid. I’m so stupid!”

Without thinking, I raised my voice: “Don’t say that about yourself! You are not stupid. You simply are a little frazzled from all that happened to you today.” With that, I led her back to the couch and fixed her dinner, as I, probably, should have done, initially. She was hesitant for me to clean up the broken glass. She wanted to do it herself and to make her own dinner. However, she knew I was serious, because I rarely raise my voice.

As we more calmly discussed what had happened, my mother shared that she was afraid of losing control of her life and her body. To that end, that fear turned into self-condemnation. Even the most uneducated person would never condemn an elderly person for getting old and losing functionality; yet, when she reached into her soul to find self-help, an old condemning message came to the surface. This message had probably been there since her stepfather verbally abused her as a child.

I shared with her that she was a wonderful mother and was doing great for being 83. To even be motivated enough to get down on the floor to exercise was more than most people her age would do. And her diabetes had caused neuropathy in her hands, which made her not feel her fingers and hands, especially the weight of something. So, she drops heavier articles, because she can’t estimate the weight of them as to the amount of feeling she has in her fingers.

I’m listening to her moan, now, as I write this. Again, she mutters, “I’m so messed up!” I shake my head in dismay. How can she get better, if all she does is condemn herself for the present situation? The truth is: She will have a difficult time of getting well, until she changes her mind about her self-assessment. Love and caring heals! Condemnation pushes you further into the abyss of darkness, away from the healing light.

We can only see fault in other people, when the fault, indeed, exists within ourselves. So, I know that I must have some of this same self-condemning talk rising, as well.

I am knowing for her and I that we are created in the image and likeness of Creator God and Unlimited Good and Wholeness. We are one with that Wholeness, operating from the center of It, as It, in It. So, we are complete and whole now, having all the tools and energy we need to move forward, even from sickness, pain, and negative situations. Everything that presents itself in our lives is subject to this Unlimited Good and Power to change anything negative to positive.

I, also, know this truth for you, too, today!

The Catapult Effect: Answered Prayers

In the past six months I have been praying and treating (which is a form of effective prayer) for something very specific. I pray with passion and with certainty almost every time I meditate. I feel certain that our passion drives love to effective prayer.

Because this particular manifestation is so important to my future as a human being, I’ll tell you that Spirit has opened a doorway to an answer to my consistent prayer. The answer was so specific, so pertinent, and completely holds every aspect of my wishes in one particularly delicate moment in time. I absolutely know that the gift sits before me waiting to be opened.

Funny, now, you would think that after praying so long, I would have expected what was so perfectly designed and choreographed by Spirit. And, not only expected, but would be thankful. However, as the prayer was being answered, I knew in my heart that something special had changed—shifted—and that I would never be the same. But, in that next moment, a couple of negative emotions came up: Am I ready for this? Am I worthy for happiness? And is this another chance to make the same mistakes all over again?

This is where the catapult effect comes into play. On the path of life, sometimes we come to places that we must leap over to get to the next stage of our lives; otherwise, we would have to stay on the same side of our mistakes and past forever, holding the fear of falling closer to our hearts than the expectation of landing in a secure place. So, with a new manifestation of good in our lives, sometimes, we must take a running start and leap, as high, and as long as can, catching the wind of Spirit for some extra help to get to the next step of our destination. As we do so, we feel freer and stronger than ever.

As one who believes in the power of manifesting through prayer, I must also have the passion and the fortitude to accept God’s gifts and be thankful! Today is a day to remember something wonderful that you had prayed for in the past and received. When this gift appeared in your life, what exactly did you do to accept the gift? How open were your arms? Then, how did you express your gratitude to God?

Coming Up: Gratitude!

#Prayer or Coercion

Yesterday, I came upon a paragraph in a book that set my entire mind into a spin. I took it personally, because, I believe I’m a perfectionist at heart. I want to do everything correctly, even pray. The paragraph from Ernest Holmes read: “The moment we think we have to pray to compel something, that same moment we are exercising the willpower which is now up against a proposition it cannot possibly meet. Prayer is not mental coercion; it is not willpower, and it is not concentration. We shall never arrive at a correct method of spiritual treatment nearly by learning how to concentrate for any length of time on a particular object. That is not what we are striving to arrive at.”

Suddenly, I looked back at my many hours of meditation and prayerful thought recently and wondered if what I really wanted to do was convince God to give me something out of selfishness. I had to take a step back for a moment, because the thought of being selfish in prayer took the breath out of me. As you know, your breath (the prana) is your life.

That evening, I attended a great class that focused mostly on prayer treatment. I brought up my question. What I began to understand about prayer was not new, but certainly clarified in my subconscious exactly how to pray without feeling like I’m taking something that isn’t mine.

You see, we can’t pray for something that we already have. In spirit, I am already whole, complete, prosperous and completely loved. If I am the arm of God in this earth reaching out from Spirit as a creative conduit of God, then I already have the attributes of God at my access—completely. What I don’t have is all of this matter in consciousness as an effect in my life. This is why we pray or treat for the effect—Not to change God, but to change our minds to be one with God!

Only once in the Christian bible do we hear Jesus asking God for something. This one time is in the Garden of Gethsemane. Every other time Jesus prays for a miracle, he simply sees his oneness with God and produces wine, bread, fish, and weightlessness as he walks on water. He had no grown-up Christmas list for God—just a complete knowledge of who He was in God’s Creation. This alone created mastery in prayer. We need to understand it to be successful in our own prayer life.

If we go to Spirit with a set of grievances and a Christmas list of items we want, Spirit doesn’t compute these specifics. We came to the this earth fully fortified to create (as we are made in the image of Creator God, just like the Master Jesus) and manifest that which we need to survive and have a purpose, which all of heaven is willing to help us with.

However, when you say to spirit, I want a tall, rich, muscular guy with blonde hair and blue eyes, Spirit doesn’t hear any of that. Spirit hears things like, “Attract to my life the best spiritual partner with a kind and compassionate heart, as you know better than I what I need in my life. My heart is open to this right and perfect person, as I know my prayer goes forth with perfect grace, as I plant the seed into the subjective mind knowing it will not come back to me void.”

This kind of prayer can be answered, because the seed from which you pray has a life of its own, like planting a tomato seed. You can’t expect to get a carrot when you plant a tomato. So, when you plant a seed, you really have only an idea and an objective behind a natural law that already exists. You have no way of forcing or coercing that seed to grow. You can nurture it. You can water it. You can keep it safe from pestilence. But you cannot make it go from seed to bearing fruit in two days. It’s not possible. You would have to go against the Law of Nature to do that.

Many of our prayers are trying to do exactly what I just described. What we must do with prayer is find the common denominator with Spiritual power and our desire. To do that, we must create a way for us to have life more abundantly, without depriving anyone else of something that is rightfully theirs. We must create a template of perfect love to nurture, knowing that only Spirit knows what to do, how do it and does it by means of our words and actions.

Raymond Charles Barker says his prayer of prosperity like this: “Spirit gives me the ability to do what I want to do, when I want to do it, with whom I want to do it, in the way I want to do it.”

Notice that nowhere in this prayer does Mr. Barker talk about money. He simply speaks to the law of prosperity in his life, which is brilliant. God doesn’t know money. God knows abundance and perfect love for you. This kind of prayer will be answered, you can be assured of it.

Coming Up: More about prayer!

Building Your Authentic Life: Part II

I don’t imagine that many people exist who can dream about a new life, try to implement it, and not be anxious about how it may turn out or when it will become a reality. Changing your life is difficult in that way. But, the outcome is dependent on our insistence on the truth and our pure belief of our new reality.

I’m not saying that any personal mantra can coerce the universe to change your path. No, the real answer lies in your belief of the Truth. This belief is more like knowing that when you plug in a lamp, the light will illuminate because of the law of electricity. There is no amount of coercion that exists here. Your belief is based on a simple knowledge of the law of electricity.

One other aspect to attaining your dreams is looking at what attracts “flies” to your life. Going back to my Discovery of two days ago, if you keep negative thoughts in your mind, you will attract negativity and disease—like flies to dung—in your mind and in your body. “No man can demonstrate peace and cling to unhappiness,” Ernest Holmes says, which also implies another one of his statements: “No person whose entire time is spent in the contemplation of limitation can demonstrate freedom from such limitation!”

You must become more of what you wish to draw into your life. Or you must become more, in general, to attract a greater good into your life!

I had lunch with a friend who is a delight. She is full of energy, young and beautiful. She has everything going for her. But she has fear about moving forward, gaining new friends in a new city, and basically, trusting the instinct of Divine Consciousness in her life. As a result, her life is at an utter standstill. She must daily prod herself into a new idea about life. If need be, she can sit still for a while and meditate with positive affirmations about moving forward to gain such energy. But, becoming more, expecting more, and moving toward her goal is a necessity to achieving her greater good.

I’ve never met a successful man or woman who sat around hoping for good without taking steps forward toward the future. I’ve also never met a successful person who doesn’t know deep inside that he or she deserves success and is certainly capable of it.

So, our next step in this process is inviting the tools of success into your life. For me, I make recordings of what I want to believe about myself. I speak them into my phone and play them back every chance I get. In fact, I will loop the recording, so that it will play back during my sleep. I want every thought to be in line with what I believe about my future. So, that I can step forward into it with each new day. This is the way to a great good!
Coming Up: More about building your new, authentic life!

Two Different Modalities of #Meditation

I was looking for a great recipe for pickling beets and found that one of the ingredients for pickling was MACE. I thought, how could “pepper spray” used for deterring thieves and attackers be edible? Of course, after just a minute on Google, I realized the mace has two names—one for the chemical and one for the ground outer shell of nutmeg, used in seasoning.

As in many things in life we have one word meaning two things, one street having two names, which is confusing as hell, and the worst of these is identical twins with different names! If you’re identical, shouldn’t share a name? Just kidding. (I think I had too much coffee this morning after my three-hour meditation. I needed something to awaken me after the long, beautiful, luxurious meditation.)

My time with spirit—out of my body—seems to get sweeter and sweeter every day I practice. I also seem to want to stay in the meditation and not return to my body. Today, I will share two different modalities of meditation. Same name—just two different intentions, like pickling—Meditation with a Purpose and Meditation for Peace.

Meditation with a Purpose
Before I begin to relax my body, I set a divine intention. Some examples of intentions are listed below. You can write your own, once you understand the concept:
  • As Wisdom, I am directed to truth in this meditation on my path to success.
  • Spirit God is all wholeness, strength and abundance. I recognize these attributes in myself now.
  • Divine Mind works inevitably through me to will and to do that which I’m thankful to contribute to the world through my talents.
  • All of my negative feelings show me my human fears, so that I can resolve my disbelief and walk toward oneness with God.
After I speak my initial intention aloud, I make sure that I have a shorter, more concise version of my intention to repeat to myself when the interval bell rings. (I use an App called “Insight Timer” that rings 3 bells every five minutes to keep my mind awake, but my body asleep). The shorter version I say internally, without speaking aloud, as not to awaken the body. As, most people’s mind wander during the first few five-minute intervals, you want to have this short affirmation memorized, to repeat to yourself when the bell rings.
Some examples are below:
  • I am successful now, and nothing or no one can hinder this.
  • Divine love draws together and holds together those who belong together.
  • I am one with all attributes of God.
  • Every part of my body is whole and complete now.
This is one very simple and effect way of meditating without feeling as if you have done something wrong, because your mind wouldn’t settle. Everything in this meditation is completely mapped out.

Meditation II
Another option for meditation is take an issue or a problem and ask yourself these questions, before you get quiet:
  • What do I feel when I consider what just happened to me?
  • Do I believe I should try to let go of the feeling?
  • Could a delicate gift exist in the recognition and reparation of this feeling or problem?
Once you ask the questions, you sit in the quiet and wait for an answer. So, you notice that both meditations carry an intention, but one waits in the silence for an answer, and one is called a creative meditation or a dreaming meditation.
I feel that most people err in their initial meditations, by just trying to be quiet. The mind is a complex network of neural pathways always firing, no matter how hard you try NOT to think. The process of meditation is more about getting above your thoughts, or listening, than it is quieting the mind.

Believing a Lie

Barbara Bush once said about Bill Clinton: “A man might forget where he parks or where he lives, but never forgets oral sex, no matter how bad it is!” For a lie to be effective—even Bill Clinton’s—someone must believe it. Do you believe everything you're told?

I have made a commitment to myself to believe nothing of the spoken word of any human being. Why? Because we are all fallible and not too many people really know the truth! I believe all of the truth is yet to be seen. So, I would say that I am one of those people who stays on the edge of belief until the proof smacks me in the face.

I remember a time in my life when I just moved back to Tennessee with my partner from NYC. We were so excited to start a new life together. But, someone close to us had started a terrible lie about us. (Is there any good lie?) So, the first few months of our move home were a complete struggle to regain our reputation as upstanding and honest people. Had my friends and even ministers stopped to consider that, at least, two stories exist in everything shared; then they may have talked to my partner or I before they believed the lie.

You may consider me a pessimist where truth is concerned, but I beg you listen closely. Even today’s daily news is rife with untruths that will be revealed to you tomorrow on the exact same newscast. Your mother or sister or best friend or lover will tell you something that has been eschewed from the truth, perhaps, to “protect” you from being hurt. We don’t know—ever—when we are being told the truth. Often, even a person who sincerely shares something like love and honesty is apt to change his/her opinion the next moment, the next day, or the next year. We all have that right to change our belief! So, what exactly is truth?

We have only one Truth we can absolutely rely on. This Truth is a Spiritual Law, and even this is ephemeral. We can believe that there is only one eternal spirit, omnipresent, powerful and compassionate, who gives us the power to create under this same spiritual laws of life. But belief must be accompanied by effect for it to be pertinent!

In other words, we can proclaim that we are whole and healed. But if we have cancer that won’t go away, then we are either believing a lie, or haven’t seen the effects of our treatment. This is our choice. To see life as truth by faith, or to see things eschewed by the human condition.

Today, imagine what life would be like if everything you saw was an illusion. What would you truly believe then? Remember, everything is changing. So, does it really exist beyond this present moment?
