Only one Love exists in the world. That Love is the perfect relationship emanating from first Cause through and as God. When we share this kind of love, we ultimately share the greatest gift that can be given in the world: right relationship.
In other languages, there are many different words for love. In Spanish I can think of four words that show different levels of love and commitment in order of their intensity: gustarse, querer, amar, and encantarse. In these examples we have the love of enjoying something, friendship based love, the love of family, and the love of an intimate partner.
In English we do not have a perfect way of differentiating the kinds of love we have for each other or a word for the varying ranges of enjoyment we feel for things. We have just one word for the ultimate in all of it, and we all seem to use the word Love randomly and without much thought.
It is only in the moment of intimacy that we understand the kind of love we speak about, and being “in love.” The only reason why we differentiate it in that situation is because we do not want it to me, “I love you, buddy!”
But, how much difference should there be in the true essence of love, God love—the Spiritual Love that connects all of us to God? The Love as God is the only kind of love that really matters in relationship, because it is the only unchangeable, immutable love that exists.
I recently noticed in my own past intimate relationships, how love seemed to move from impervious intensity to a lackadaisical malaise of inconsistency, which did not serve either partner well. Ultimately, this lack of immutable love is what destroyed relationship. In my recapitulation of old love, I had to wonder if I have ever really loved any intimate partner—or anyone—for that matter.
We know what we want in intimate relationship is more like an enduring friendship, more like the kind of love that a mother has for child, or the kind of unconditional love that we share with our spiritual friends and ministers. This kind of love seems to transcend bad and good times and considers mistakes as a part of relationship, easily forgiven.
I recently met a person who quickly became a prayer partner because our spiritual beliefs were so similar. I noticed that the more time we spent in prayer, the more I have learned to love this individual in a deeper, more profound way. I realized that if I had the opportunity to plan my life with this person in it, I would certainly be a part of that dream as long as I could. This is love has the intensity of a spirituality and has the strongest foundation we can create in relationship. When we encounter this kind of love, it balances our humanness, friendships, and intimacy in a new way.
