Ralph Waldo Emerson writes: “For it is only the finite that has wrought and suffered; the infinite lies stretched in smiling repose.”
When I heard this quote, my mind began to race. For me, this is the sign of a great quote! This one sentence has so many possibilities that all I can do is begin to imagine what it means. Emerson is one of my favorite authors because he provides depth and spirituality to his essays, from an era of literature that certainly was more religious than spiritual. Yet, his writings lasted through the ages for a spiritually mature audience to enjoy long after his death.
This particular quote plays with the difference between the finite or tangible human existence and the infinite, intangible spiritual one. He suggests that the human experience is wrought with suffering, but the heavenly experience is peaceful. At least, that is my first thought at a cursory look at this quote.
However, as I dig deeper, and read the parts of this essay that few quote, I notice that the essay is more about the conversations of those who speak about spirituality and those who speak about themselves and changing things like politics, cultural differences, and material goods.
Emerson writes “God offers to every mind its choice between truth and repose. Take which you please, and you can never have both.” In other words, no person can have both at the same time. One is diametrically opposed to the other. When you talk of true spirituality, you cannot become idealistic, egocentric, or have a particular view of that which is Universal Law and unchanging. Law is peace, love, joy, always recreating itself.
Emerson goes on to say, “It is the property of the religious spirit to be the most refining of all influences. No external advantages, no culture of the tastes, no habit of command, no association with the elegant, or even depth of affection, can bestow that delicacy and that grandeur of bearing which belong only to the mind accustomed to celestial conversation,—all else is but gilt and cosmetics, beside this, as expressed in every look and gesture.”
So, today, when you feel anxiety or depression coming on, think on the things that do not change. Converse about spiritual law and the dynamics of beauty in the universe. Remember that all things are in order, even though you may see chaos. A higher power exists that has us on a path toward perfect repose, if we so choose to see it, believe it, and surround yourself with people who speak of it.
