New Me for a New Year—I Am Bo #iambo

I am not the person I was when I experienced ten, twenty, thirty, forty or even fifty years old. I am Bo—ever-evolving, ever-changing, open to the wide road ahead for a new vista.

Please don’t judge me by what I have done in the past. I am completely remade, fashioned by the work that the light of spirit refracts through me, every day, every minute, every second. Even I don’t perceive all my power yet!

I am a child of unlimited source. I become stronger as I allow more of myself to be a conduit to this perfect presence. My strength carries me on my road each day as I do the will of the wind—following its flawless path. I make a pact with the present to be open for each new moment. This year, I commit to enjoy the anticipation of the next experience much more often than I linger in my past disasters and hurts.

I am Bo, a strong warrior for good.

I resist the temptation to fly solo. I need you, my friends, my family, my allies, and even my perceived enemies to be whole. All things work together for the good of all around me, even those whom I don’t know. One grace-filled moment of compassion could change the course of humanity. As I am changed, I give everyone around me the permission to shine, conquer, and achieve their goals and aspirations.

I am an ever-flowing fountain of water, endless because my roots go deep into the earth’s bosom to receive from it all that I need to be a human, carrying the gift of God’s spirit through my veins. This wellspring of nourishment I share with all those around me, because it is my nature to give and receive with poise.

I am Bo. I offer myself up to humanity in the hopes, that you, too, will find the grace to do the same. You are ___________!

A Year to CLEAR Challenge!

The acronym CLEAR stands for (Compassionate, Loving, Enthusiastic, And Relationship-Ready). The goal of this project is to engulf readers in a weekly study that will transform them by removing blocks, promote self-growth, and give them wings to fly freely into daily life. Each week, by going to BoSebastian.com and choosing the Year to CLEAR Challenge tab, a new challenge or thought to provoke conversation, growth, and group functionality.

#healthcare.gov “Essentials in Choosing a Health Plan”

I was fortunate, it only took me one month to figure out this system and get a plan. I signed on, got some financial support from the government, and picked a plan. However, after I finally got my insurance card from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee, I realized that none of my doctors were on the plan. Hopefully this blog should help you avoid many hours on the phone trying to unscramble this problem.

The main issue with the system right now is that the operators you speak with at Blue Cross and Blue Shield have little understanding of what happens in the Marketplace. If you choose a plan from the Marketplace, there is little to nothing an operator at Blue Cross can do, but lead you back to the Marketplace. When you get to the Marketplace operators, they know just about as much about the plans as Blue Cross knew about the Marketplace. So, I spent 3 days trying to figure all of this out. Here are some pointers to help you.

First of all, know the plans that your provider accepts. Mine happened to be Blue Cross PPO Plan P and S. When I chose a plan, I didn’t realize that the last letter of the plan number indicated the directory of doctors. This is the first thing you should know when choosing! Subsequently, S045-S is in the S plan of doctors. S023-E is in the E plan of doctors.

If you are one of the fortunate ones whom the government is helping subsidize payment of the plan, you must choose from the Silver Plan for Blue Cross. I didn’t know this either. I didn’t understand why some plans were extremely high for less coverage, until an operator from Blue Cross shared about only being able to choose from the Silver plan. Now everything started to make sense. At this point, I needed coverage from the Silver Plan that had a plan number ended with S or P.

Now let’s deal with the Deductible and Out of Pocket expense vs. individual payment for doctors, specialists and healthcare. Here is the real focus! Look only at the Deductible and Out of Pocket expense, first, because once you pay for the out of pocket expense, nothing else on the plan matters. The plan pays for 100% after the deductible. That I definitely didn’t know. So, now I began to look for a Silver plan ending in P or S, and had a low out of pocket and low deductible. I found one for even cheaper than what I paid before with $500 total out of pocket for the year, for only $97 a month. Basically, once I pay that $500, I pay $0 for everything else, including prescriptions for the rest of the year. Of course, I continue paying the 97 dollars, though.

When I ferreted out all the possible expenses, this plan was the one to choose. I hope that helps.

Let’s talk about free radicals in the body and brain. Dr. Perlmutter, the author of Grain Brain, concludes that most of us eat too much sugar and simple carbohydrates—which also turn to sugar quickly—to let good fat do its work. By the time the fat reaches the brain, it becomes free radicals that cause inflammation in the body, stomach and brain, causing many diseases, such as Arthritis, Alzheimer’s, dementia, Diabetes…. The list is very long.

My mother has diabetes. She started reading the book yesterday and couldn’t take her nose out of it. She didn’t understand, however, how carbohydrates affected her overall body health. So, I explained this to her. There are two kinds of carbs: Simple and Complex. Simple carbs are food such as bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, and virtually any white food. Complex carbs are vegetables and fruit. But even fruit has sugar in it, so when you choose your fruit, pick one that isn’t high in sugar, and only choose one piece of fruit a day. The majority of our carbohydrate load should be in the fresh vegetable section of the food chart. The rest of our diet should be protein. Even sugar substitutes like agave nectar are sugar produced by fruit, so go easy on it.

Perlmutter says that we shouldn’t be too concerned about the amount of fat that is on our beef or pork or even the use of butter. The fat we should stay away from is hydrogenated fat. Avoid it at all costs. Hydrogenated fat is any oil that has been genetically modified to turn into butter. Examples are most name brand peanut butters, margarines, and Crisco. He believes it would better to use lard than to use genetically modified oils. His reasoning: fat that is not been modified, can be used to create brain health, if your sugar intake is low. Again, when you sugar intake is low, then the fat—even if it is meat fat or milk fat—will be used by the brain as a good contributor to brain health.

Personally, in my desire to move toward with this diet, to try out its efficacy, I have had trouble limiting the amount of sugar I eat. It seems that refining my diet to no breads, limited simple carbs, and adding more protein isn’t a problem. I feel full and vibrant. It is in the late night I want to eat something sweet.

Perlmutter says to expect to feel a withdrawal from the sugars and white carbs. He believes that as wheat and sugar has been genetically modified, scientists have added to the content of these little demons an opiate effect in the brain. This means we are actually drugging ourselves every we eat refined sugars and white flour. Even the whole grains have been modified to create this same opiate effect in the brain. So, when you get off of sugar, expect to have some withdrawal symptoms. As I try to stay away from the sugar, I have to tell you, my brain and body are craving it like an addict. I hope that by weaning off if it, I can titrate completely. But, I have to tell you, that when I took sugar out of my diet before, I went cold turkey, with just fruit for the first week, then no sweets after. I literally sweated like an addict for two days.

If you have been diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety and chronic stress, migraines, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, focus problems, inflammation—including arthritis, insomnia, intestinal problems, memory problems (dementia, Alzheimer’s), mood disorders, overweight and obesity, or Tourette’s syndrome, you could be among the millions that are very sensitive to gluten. When sugar is added to this sensitivity, free radical fats stop your brain’s health, so problems begin to come in the form in the above diseases and disorders. The book Grain Brain can help pinpoint the problems and aid you in changing unhealthy habits and put you on the right track with eating and exercise.

Dr. Perlmutter, the author of Grain Brain, concludes that most of us believe brain problems are predisposition of DNA from relatives and don’t understand the connection between diet and a healthy brain. The main functions of the brain need healthy fat to maintain the right mechanics to operate properly. Yet, as I said above, most of us eat too much sugar and simple carbohydrates, which turn to sugar quickly, to let these good fats do their work. By the time the fats reach the brain, they become free radicals that cause inflammation in the body, stomach and brain, causing many diseases.

One very helpful aid, besides changing our diet, is taking a vitamin D and vitamin E (which I just saw on ABC world news last night) capsule daily and helping with the free radical problems, and taking vitamin C. Perlmutter maintains that Vitamin D isn’t actually a vitamin at all. He contends it’s a necessary protein for the brain. He also says that if you are going to drink alcohol, avoid beer and vodka, which have gluten in them. He says a glass of wine will be okay and possibly helpful. One glass!

Tests that you can ask your doctor to give you are: Fasting blood glucose, Hemoglobin AIC, Fructosamine, Fasting insulin, Homocysteine, Vitamin D, Creative protein (CRP) Cyrex array 3, Cyrex array 4 (optional).  All of these tests can help you find out if your body is being depleted by gluten and if your brain is getting enough of the proper fats and proteins to function normally.

Dr. Perlmutter brings the culprit of the entire body down to inflammation. I know with me, gluten causes an acidic base in the body, which creates a sour stomach. After which, the acid tends to make my body ache with arthritic pain. I also tend to feel muddled mentally sometimes, especially during times of dreary, overcast weather.

I have seen a considerable difference in my entire body, sleep patterns, and mental acuity since I have begun this quest to eliminate gluten and decrease the amounts of sugars in my body. Around the holidays it was difficult, but I made sure that I had gluten free chocolate chip cookies incase I wanted a treat with every one else, and I made gluten free bread and rolls for turkey sandwiches. The rolls tend to be a favorite in my family, as they often taste better and richer because of the olive oils and high protein with 6 eggs in them.

Lastly, Perlmutter discusses our desire to reduce egg intake. He says we have been told a myth about eggs. The cholesterol that helps brain health is produced by eggs, as long as you don’t alter the LDL fats with sugar. So, basically, the cornerstone of this diet is close to the Paleo diet, because a healthy brain diet is about increasing protein, fat, and vegetable intake, while decreasing sugars, simple carbs, and most certainly ridding the body of all gluten.
