Dinner with a PornStar? #judgment and prejudice #truth #countongod #spiritualadvice #livingtruth

I went to dinner last night with an old friend from Nashville. We were laughing and cutting up as we took a selfie for Facebook. We jokingly put that he was a porn star in the description. Surprisingly, most of my friends thought it was the truth, even though the rest of the description held the truth—“AND a flight specialist.” I actually had to go back and edit the picture to save face.
Really, friends? WWJD? If a porn star wanted to have dinner with you to talk, would you not treat him or her like a human being? Maybe s/he wanted to know about spiritual things or understand your take on meditation. Maybe a porn star isn’t so different than you and I.
This seemingly funny incident made me realize just how much we all compartmentalize and judge people before we even know them. My friend could not be less of a porn star. He is actually a very spiritual and compassionate, loving person. However, both of us like to have fun and cut up, which is a part of life that most people forget about.
We are meant to play like children of God in the playground of life, joyfully embracing all the good that Spirit has to give.

Who Cares About Your Opinion? #voicingopinions #judgment #psychology

Who hasn’t been at a party, where in one corner of the room a loud and argumentative person spews his or her opinion about every governmental or religious problem in the world? I know I have been at that party. I hate hearing anyone prattle on about everything that s/he feels near and dear to his heart and wish everyone else in the world would believe.

The issue is: who’s mind can anyone change with his opinion and where is it appropriate to give yours? Opinions laced with rancor and loud, unfettered beliefs tend to fall on deaf ears. Or worse yet, they tend to be used against the very person the opinion was meant to defy. Check out Facebook and look at all the ways negative opinions have made the speaker look like a blubbering idiot.

I tend to keep my opinions to myself, unless I’m asked. Even then, I assess the room, make sure I’m not being set up to look like a fool, and then carefully share my thoughts with the words, “I believe” or “it falls within my purview to think that…”

However, when I really want to share a thought or an opinion, I give myself an audience where I am the speaker or facilitator. I, then, invite people who would be interested in discussing this point of view. Places like the Internet group, Meetup.com, provides you with built in audiences who actually look for you to share a certain opinion. This is how I began my group: Uncommon Gay Spiritual Warriors, based on a book I wrote about the subject. The group has 130 followers in only four months. Each month, we discuss some ideas that are pertinent to the subject. No one comes to the meeting without desiring to be there.

I believe to capture a person’s attention to the point where you can change his or her mind, you must allow the person to be listening to you by his own free will. Any time I have learned something new or changed my own opinion, it has usually been at a workshop or in a place where I went to listen to a speaker or even a therapist. My mind was already in a place for change. So, I was in the mood to open my heart and allow another person’s opinion to stretch my own thought parameters.

A party is not the place to voice your opinion, unless you enjoy being ostracized. In the hall waiting for a Broadway show to start isn’t the place, unless you enjoy being escorted out of the theater by a policeman. Around the dinner table is not the place to voice your opinion, unless you enjoy stuffing your narcissism down your children’s throats. By someone’s desk at work is not the place unless you feel unemployment is a good choice for you.

Do give your opinion where it counts! Choose a place where you have invited someone to hear your thoughts and give the person the chance to leave if he or she is not comfortable with what you say! Always, I mean always, do this in a calm way using the words, “It’s is my opinion that…”

Thanks for listening.

Oblivious

The dictionary defines this word as not aware or not concerned about what is happening around us. How many people do you know that are completely oblivious to life, relationship, or work ethic?
Last night I was at an ice cream joint with a friend. The line was out of the door. Four people were behind the counter. Three of them were talking and carrying on with each other. Only one was waiting on customers. Everyone in the line was thinking the same thing I was: The other three people are totally oblivious to the fact that we would all like to be waited on in the next hour. A feeling of infuriation arose in me.
Yesterday, I was on a two-lane street with a woman whose head could barely reach over the steering wheel. She drove fifteen miles an hour below the speed limit, when, of course, I had to be at an appointment on time. The woman was oblivious, or maybe just too old to care!
In situations like this, my first thought is my own ability to have empathy and compassion for those around me, sometimes to my detriment. I’m most often concerned and even rattled by the feeling of disappointing people in situations, when people are waiting on me, or I may be late for an appointment. I wonder what I would feel if I had more of a sense of oblivion in those situations. What if, instead of lack of responsibility and compassion, these people are simply doing what they need to do with no respect of what other’s think? In so doing, they are really relying on God or Spirit to direct their paths, instead allowing the weight of other’s desires to manipulate them?
When we are in situations that mirror oblivion, we are all reflecting off of each other things we need to work on in ourselves. I believe that since I have been confronted with this kind of oblivious behavior, that maybe I should consider enhancing my life with a bit more of this “letting go of other’s judgment” into my life and being a little more oblivious to the angst of what other’s feel. After all, I can’t control everyone or everything. So, I might as well acquiesce to living life without concern of other’s? (That is probably stepping a little too far over my compassion boundary.)
I’m sure, if I tried hard enough, I could find a great balance between being totally oblivious to others’ needs and being overly concerned about how everyone is affected by me. If traffic is slow moving and I’m late, could it be that God is responsible and that I should simply make a phone call to let someone know that I’m trying my best to be there on time, but a wreck has detained me? Or in a situation where twenty people are waiting to speak to me, if I just settle into the idea that each person deserves a certain amount of time to feel taken care of, I would be just fine? I can’t possibly do anymore than I’m already doing to appease all these people, so just let go and relax. Here’s to just a bit of oblivion in life!
Coming Up: I’ll be spending some time looking at prosperity—how to achieve it, why it’s not coming, and how to step forward into your dreams!

Branded: Should Read “Erotic & Disgusting”! #prejudice #GLBT #judgment #personaltruth

Branded: Should Read “Erotic & Disgusting”!
#prejudice #GLBT #judgment #personaltruth

Two days in a row, I have woken up with someone posting to my Facebook page judgmental words in the name of God. Today, to my yesterday’s posting about ridding your life of anxiety and stress, which never even mentioned sex, someone posted: “This should read erotic and disgusting! That’s not what I said. That’s what God said!”

Of course, I immediately blocked him from posting to my site. He was a friend of someone who “liked” the post, so he wasn’t one of my friends. Yesterday, I had someone write me a personal message (thank you for not sharing your ugliness with the world), who was on my friends’ list, which said, “I pray that God shows you the real way to heaven!”

This is actually ironic, because yesterday’s post had two scripture quotes from the Christian bible. I thought I was being a little too religious for most of my readers. But, I guess, the more a gay person says he believes in Jesus’ teachings, the more he is persecuted.

I’ve had 6-7 friends who were also Christian ministers who have come out in the past few years. Some have stayed to honor their ministries, others have moved on to find themselves. Either way, the path to people understanding was difficult. One man in Atlanta was a huge evangelical minister with many books and had a campus—not just a church—because of the amount of people who followed him. His story went public, so it is fine to talk about it here. His wife and children knew of his propensity toward being gay, but for years fought it. Jim says he never even had any kind of affair during those years. He just knew in his heart he was gay. However, it was his wife, who told him that he should practice what he preached and come out! Rev. Jim began to take the hard step of accepting gay people into his ministry with open arms without judgment first, which is what led his wife to divorce him and nudge him out of the closet. She told him she would continue to be a co-minister with him at the church, love him, and support his decision to come out, which, I believe, was amazing. When I watched the interview on television on “The View,” I mostly cried because of Deb’s position in the process of his accepting himself and coming out.

I went to his church after the news. Most of the seats were empty. I would say he had about 30% of his following stay with him. Good for them, probably, hard for the ministry to stay afloat, though. I can’t imagine that with so few members they could pay the bills. Still, he managed to continue preaching every week. Rev. Jim Swilley saw me in the pews that morning and remembered my face from sending him a few encouraging messages on Facebook. In the middle of preaching his message, he asked me if I wanted to come up to the pulpit and sing, without even knowing if I could sing and never even meeting me beforehand. This fellow was listening to his heart, clearly. I did go up and sing, “Amazing Grace.” I felt like crying the entire time. I knew Jim’s heart had been bleeding. You didn’t have to be Svengali to notice how hard it had become to find himself and do it in front of all the people of his congregation, most of whom had turned their backs on him and his forgiving and compassionate, minister wife, Deb.

This past year, many articles and books have been written about scriptural interpretation of the Christian bible and its meaning about homosexuality; especially the scriptures about Sodom and Gomorrah. Before I even began reading the books that appeared on the shelves about why God didn’t care if I was gay, I had to find the truth in my own soul.

I couldn’t look in a book to discover the truth about myself. I had to see it clearly in my heart, first. The road to understanding and loving yourself, in the face of those who will judge you, is a scary road—one only a warrior can travel. I honor anyone who does this, especially ministers who will get the most flack and prejudice. One of my best friends had to let go of 1000s of friends when he came out, because most of his dearest friends were in the church. These friends loved him while he was in the closet, without knowing he was gay. Yet, as soon as he voiced his truth, they despised and mocked him.

Your truth is important, friends! No one should be able to snatch it away. You should hold it close to your heart and make it real for you. If you feel the need to put it out in the open for the world to see, you should expect that men and women “of God” will dispute it. For you, I would say, don’t try to argue with them. They have a right to their opinion. Simply just press “block” and keep them from getting in the way of your honoring your personal path to spirituality. Your authentic connection to God and Spirit is all that matters.

The Diagnosis of This World #judgment

The Diagnosis of This World

Everything around you judges. “That email you just wrote scored a perfect 10. Its content was right on target; its vocabulary was stellar, and most importantly, you sent it at the perfect time.” We tend to judge most things as well. “That cup of Starbucks hit the spot. On a scale of one to ten it was about an 8. It did taste as if it weren’t the freshest I’d tasted there, but nonetheless, it was worth the $4. I’m amped up, pumped up, and ready to start my day.”

But Jesus was very concerned about being conformed to the diagnosis of the world. He said, “Be ye not conformed to the judgment of the world.” What exactly did he mean? You know the judgments of the days of Jesus may have been strict, but they had so little to judge. It was either sin or death—sick and sent to the outskirts of the city. But today, we get judged for everything we do. We get up in the morning, we have to diagnose the conformity of a bowel movement to tell if we ate properly. We have to dress accordingly to the day we have. We have to be up and aware for meetings, present all of our ideas on point, and many times get judged harshly for not being prepared. How can we not conform?

That, my friends, is a very good question. I have spent my entire life trying to find a way not to conform to the world. It seems that the more I resist life’s conformity, the more I realize that I am freer than I have ever been. At present, I have completely dismantled my life. I have changed coarse midstream and have started three new careers in the midst of many other things I do. I have decided that if I don’t do what I’m here to do, then there simply is no reason to be here. So, I’m moving head first into areas I resisted for the very reason I write to you—because of judgment and conformity.

I resisted my calling for so long because I let the world and all of its judges tell me what I could and couldn’t do. I’m here to tell you today, if you are feeling the same way as I do, don’t wait another day to pursue your dreams. If you have to expertise to follow your dream and have the motivation, start today.

Not a Judgment: Just an Observation

Not a Judgment; Just an Observation

Today I spent a few hours this afternoon with a man who I hardly knew. He considered himself a spiritual seeker, a healer, and seemed to be on a path toward the light. Yet, every thing he said and did felt like it carried a deep-seated anger within it. He is a younger man than I, but does some of the same healing modalities as I do. His talk was authentic, as we have emailed and spoke on the phone for about a month. He doesn’t live in Nashville, so he made a special trip here to spend some face-to-face time talking about our interests.

What I learned by talking to him is that unless we can observe ourselves long enough to see the hindrances that lie in the path toward our expression of good, there is little use for them on this earth. I remembered when I first moved to Nashville. I had lived in NYC for a long time. My demeanor was harsher than the southerners. I, also, was a lot less subtle than people in the south. I probably am still a bit like that, but definitely not as much as when I first arrived.

The first couple years of living here, I learned a hard lesson. People in the south just don’t like the ways of northerners. They didn’t like my accent. They didn’t like my abruptness. They were offended by me being forthright and honest.

If you want to be liked by people in the south, you have to become like them. You have to whittle away at your rough edges. You have to speak slower. You have to say kind things about someone, even it means lying. The trick was to always put, “Bless their hearts,” after anything you said.

I learned that if I was going to live in the south and be accepted by the people in the south, I was going to have to look at the qualities about myself that were unacceptable to the people around me. The lesson was difficult. I want to be honest all the time, no matter whom it hurts. I innately want to be harsher and more critical of almost everything. But, alas, I can’t be and be accepted by my peers. And I certainly can’t be a healer and a person who declares himself peaceful from a meditation practice and also be caustic at the same time.

My choice was to stay in the south and live here, because I sincerely felt as if I had been led right here. I have been content and in love with Nashville for twenty years. So, I have made it a point to make change in myself that reflect the qualities that are more positive, peaceful, and loving. The south is gentler than the north. I love that about southerners. Life is a lot less frenetic and certainly kinder to the soul here.

But my point is that if you want to be used in Rome, you are going to have to adopt the ways of the Romans. If you want to be used as a spiritual leader, you are going to have to put aside narcissism, your ego trips, and being right all the time. Spiritual leaders have faults, absolutely. But they must make a stronger attempt at righting their wrongs, because people are looking at them through a magnifying glass.

I sometimes make enemies of people I don’t even know, because of what and who they expect me to be, because of my profession. I know that’s not my fault. But it is a consistent mirror for me to be authentic always. By authentic, I mean led by my deepest spiritual light and not by my ego.

I pray your day leads you to some new understanding of yourself.
