Almost everyone has one. Most of us limp around with one or carry it on our shoulders. Some displays it proudly with colorful banners. Others hide it in the closet. But, one thing is for certain: Even the best of us have some small fault that may cause us to fail.
For a singer or performer, it might be the slip of the memory. For a computer technician, it might be the occasional Dyslexic moment. For the teacher, preacher, or product developer, it may be a hidden fear of public speaking. But, even more than hidden faults in our professions, most of us have these micro-faults in our brain, attached to something that has happened in our past, which consistently triggers us emotionally. This is your personal Achilles Heel!
In Greek mythology, Achilles was a Greek hero of the Trojan War and the central character and greatest warrior of Homer's Iliad. Achilles’ most notable feat during the Trojan War was the slaying of the Trojan hero, Hector, outside the gates of Troy. Although the death of Achilles is not presented in the Iliad, other sources concur that he was killed near the end of the Trojan War by Paris, who shot him in the heel with an arrow. Later, legends state that Achilles was invulnerable in all of his body except for his heel. Because of his death from a small wound in the heel, the term Achilles' heel has come to mean a person's point of weakness.
I believe EVERYONE has a vulnerable place in his/her mind or body that can usually be triggered by one family member, an old friend, a memory of being made fun on, or even worse, a hidden place of discomfort concerning sexuality and fantasy that lurks in the shadows of one’s private, intimate moments.
As a clinician, I have heard stories that I would have never expected from some of the strongest and most intelligent people I’ve ever met concerning these kinds of Achilles Heels. Neatly compartmentalized within each person’s brain are neural pathways leading to these fragile places in all of us that MAY or MAY NOT cause us to fail at some point in our lives. It’s the “not knowing” how this problem will manifest that scares us the most.
The Apostle Paul in the scripture called this his “Thorn in the Flesh.” Theologians have speculated for years what this thorn may be, but no one really knows for sure. I believe there is a good reason the thorn’s subject was never revealed in scripture: Because, had it been revealed, the parable of this man’s thorn would only be applicable to that particular problem. The writer of that scripture was smart enough or inspired enough to know that, to teach us the lesson intended, we all had to be compassionate enough and understand that even someone as great as Paul the Apostle, had a vulnerable place.
My advice about this is simple, but much harder to accomplish and face:
Nothing that stays hidden in your mind or in your past can ever be healed. Admitting your fear, facing it, and finding ways to understand your human vulnerabilities are the only way to manifest greatness.
Yes, Achilles did finally get killed by an arrow to the heel, but you don’t have to be Achilles. You can learn to overcome your fear and become stronger in any situation by creating a compassionate overseer of your human mind and body. Each of us has a “higher self” that is like the helpful adult in our own personal lives, always there, never judging, and giving the advice to be bigger and better with every step forward.
The only power that truly exists that can overcome any Achilles Heel is an understanding of what you are made of and the power that exists, even deeper in every cell of your being—your God Energy. Understanding WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU ARE MADE OF, IS THE KEY TO OVERCOMING ANYTHING IN LIFE.
Because you are divinely connected to Source, you have been created perfectly. Your Achilles Heel is only an illusion in the human mind. Because this is so, you have power over anything in the highest place of your brain, where you are connected to Source. I am knowing this for you and for me, now!
