I know this with certainty: No matter the differences in all the world’s religions, all believed that the worlds and universe began with ONE solitary cause. To this cause comes the name of God. To this end, we must admit that all religions have, at their core, much deliberation about how the world began. So, an amalgam of all religions would be an appropriate place to start, if we wanted to consider all of the ways the greatest thinkers of the world imagined creation.
- Christianity (2.1 billion followers): We teach that God has created heaven and earth, and that in the manner and in the space of time recorded in the Holy Scriptures, especially Gen. 1 and 2, namely, by His almighty creative word, and in six days.
- Islam (1.3 billion followers): “Allah caused you to grow out of the earth as a good growth.” Most Muslims believe more in Darwin’s theory of creation, evolving slowly. This also follows for their ideas of the creation of all else in the universe.
- Hinduism: (851 million followers): Hinduism teaches that the material world is created not once but repeatedly, time and time again. Additionally, this universe is considered to be one of many, all enclosed "like innumerable bubbles floating in space." Within this universe, there are three main regions: the heavenly planets, the earthly realm, and the lower worlds.
- Buddhists (375 million followers): Buddhism is more of a philosophy about life and how to live it. Its scriptures have little, if nothing, about how the world began.
- Taoism (2.7 million followers): In the middle of chaos there was in incubation, an egg. From it hatched the heavens, the earth, and the God (the giant), who divided the heavens and earth.
As you can see, there isn’t a lot of consistency to the world’s largest religions about creation. So, to get a glimpse of what creation might look like through the eyes of one who is open to the beliefs of all religions, you might get this, and not much more: Out of nothing, came something. But behind this nothingness was always consciousness or mind, out of which all was made and created.
In all religions, the amount of time varies in creation, the ways in which man and the worlds were formed changes, but all theories consist of one solid concept, that:
IN THE BEGINNING WAS ONE THOUGHT THAT CREATED EVERYTHING. BEHIND THAT THOUGHT WAS MOST PEOPLE’S IDEA OF WHAT GOD IS.
Know this: You don’t have to recognize or believe any one certain story about creation. But to give creation some thought and contemplation always gives your mind and a greater space in which to grow.
Personally, I think that the Buddhists non-story makes the most sense. Why make an argument about religion? Why does it matter HOW we began. It matters much more as to HOW we live our lives and treat each other!
