If you have been reading books by Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, and Marianne Williamson, you more than likely have subscribed to a way of thinking that is known as Metaphysics. In short, the etymology of the word is meta (out from) and physics (the physical)—out from the physical.
As a spiritual practice has evolved from this science of thought, we are more apt to look at the entire world of religion as institutions that have created laws and dictums to reign in the masses to a certain way of thinking. Whereas, metaphysics, though it has attracted the masses to create centers around this thought, we still do not subscribe to the idea of religion or church—rather we call ourselves spiritual thinkers or metaphysicians. We call our churches, centers.
One difference between metaphysics and religion is that the self-thinker is celebrated in metaphysics. The challenge of taking each thought into captivity and recognizing one’s finite power to change it —is the study of Metaphysics. It is spirituality based on the science of a particular way of thinking, where each individual can manifest different results from different thoughts.
Most people would rather have a religion with a spiritual commitment of 10% of their money, laws that keep bad things from happening, one person or minister studying; while the others—like sheep—get led. I’m no more a part of this way of life than I am a Republican. (Sorry, friends who are Republican.) I just don’t believe in the concepts of this party. At one point, I could live with the idea that there was some good to the entire idea around the Republican way. But, with the rise of Donald Trump and religious dictators posing as politicians, trying to overpower equality, I am in complete opposition to this premise.
I mention politics, because what I see is two very different polarities in the way of thinking.
Democracy benefits the Whole. Republican thinking benefits the few. We cannot be unified in a world where there is you OR I. We must live in a world and with religion and politics that support the belief of YOU AND I. There is union or peace, otherwise.
So, the idea of metaphysics not only embraces a science of thinking, but it also believes that behind the force that created life is a law of Love. Ultimately, Love rules through the person who will let this Law live and move and have its being.
It’s simple to see if a friend, a relative, or a political opponent is spiritual or religious. Listen for unity and commensurate words that would create a bigger, better life for all—not just for some.
The last part of metaphysics that differentiates it from religion is that we invite change and concepts that propel us to greater and bigger beliefs. We believe that there is but One Law, but that Law holds ALL TRUTH— already discovered or yet to be discovered. So, our fundamental belief stay firmly rooted in one concept, while we branch out and grow as high and as vast as our minds will allow us to accept new ideas.
