I have been working on a Kevin Spacey commercial for Renault cars. I’m Señor Spacey’s stand-in double. What an interesting concept and feeling. I get to do all the things he doesn’t want to do: stand in the cold, sit for hours while the cameras get the right angles for the shoot, wait for hours doing nothing, and eat at the snack table all day!
Yesterday, the entire shoot was in beautiful Coral Gables. The weather was 75 degrees. A slight zephyr kept me from getting too warm, the sky crystal clear and the water calm and glorious.
Today, however, we are on the seventh floor of a parking garage in South Beach. It’s a fancy garage, but a parking garage nonetheless. Though the weather beyond this garage is in the low seventies, the temperature up here must be fifty. I have a windbreaker on over my head because the breeze must have a wind chill of thirty. The cameraman wears his hooded ski jacket as if South Beach was made for such weather. When I first saw all the New York film crew dressed for winter, I laughed. Now, I wish I had prepared for snow.
If you have ever been skiing on a sunny day, you know that if you ski on the sunny side of the mountain, it may be slippery, but the temperature is a lot nicer. Some folks even take their shirts off to ski in the late spring. I have never been that cavalier, but I have actually sweated in twenty-degree weather. The feeling is odd. Hot in the Cold, which similar to the exact opposite that I’m feeling now. All of us on the seventh floor are searching for the few places that the sun still shines through the parking garage’s mainframe.
Today, life indicates to me that we are constantly in perfect juxtaposition to the opposites of what we are, could be, and, perhaps, dream to be. Beyond every situation is another way of looking at it, a positive way, a negative perspective, and even a balanced way.
Today, is a time to look at everything in your life with two sets of eyes. Look from your humanity’s vision. Then look at what you could learn from the same situation with your spiritual eyes. How vast is the difference between spirituality and reality? Isn’t life the same exact thing from both sides, except one has a positive perspective and the other a negative one with a different perspective?
