Her Encore Career

Her Encore Career

Many women have decided to go back into the workforce after raising a family and retiring from a job. This is delightfully been dubbed an Encore Career! I love the idea of a man or woman discovering a new career or hobby that feels like a vocation at age 60 and then moving forward toward it with vigor and veracity.

I have two lady friends, I believe both are in their sixties, who have begun a women’s movement. They are on fire about their idea and ability to lead woman to a powerful commitment to spirit. I’m glad to be a part of their energy when I’m around it. How exciting is it to have gone your entire life working and doing the things you think you should do to be an aspiring something (mother, father, worker, actor, singer, artist, etc.), only to find that what really drives you has been hidden behind a fear that only expressed itself at the last encore of your life?

These kinds of careers, I feel, have the most positive energy. We have learned from our many mistakes at trying to make anything happen on our own volition. We know for certain that life happens in God’s timing. As we are inspired to our greatness, we inspire others, no matter how old we are. Inspiration is infectious at any age.

Lately, as I have shared in past blogs, I have been wondering about my next encore. I simply sense that something new is about to happen in my life. As I have titrated from some of my work, I now wait patiently for God’s whispers and angels to implement the plan. The struggle is getting in front of the game and not playing in time with the Now!

I tend to see a dream ahead and run for it. In my latter years I have recognized that the best-made plans are plans that you can give up in an instant for God’s perfect will. Everything great that has happened in my life has not been about anything more than an intention. With intention comes preparation. But from there, the best we can do is be available for when God inspires our greatness.

Are you ready for your encore performance? I know I certainly am.

Holy Listening—My Sheep Know My Voice

Holy Listening—My Sheep Know My Voice

I have striven to be open to the voice of God ever since I was six years old and had an experience that changed my life. God spoke to me through a deck of cards first, then in an audible voice.

First a blue haze filled my bedroom. Then I jolted up, afraid but knew something special and auspicious took place. I kept a deck of cards by my bed. I turned on the light and took out the cards, nervously shuffling them. I asked the presence, “If this is God, make this next card be an Ace of Clubs.” I turned the card over. It was an ace of clubs. I asked three more times, and each time the card was as I asked.

From then, a rich deep voice, inaudible to the human ear, but my heart definitely heard it: “I am God. I am here to take care of your and guide you.” That was it! But it changed my life forever.

Not everyone has an experience like this, but I have noticed that the more I ask people about any interesting experiences with God expressing Itself, the more stories I hear. Most people say they have never shared the story before. Mostly likely, people are afraid to share what seems auspicious and haunting, even, perhaps, a little loony.

But I’m hear to tell you, God has said in the bible that His sheep hear his voice. So, all you have to do is be open to hearing. For many people God will show signs. Something synchronistic may happen to show you the way. A person may call whom you have been thinking about. Or, you may just have an unction that just won’t go away. All of these ways are communication from your spiritual center.

One thing that we have to be sure of is making space to hear God. If you just pray and never listen, it would be like having a conversation with a self-centered person. You have to make time for God to answer in the silence. This is when meditation is so important.

I am offering this month three or for choices as the Tools for Change to help you get to a meditative place with mp3s that I have created for exactly that purpose. I want to offer them for just $3 a piece in my storefront below. I have to say that very few people have taken advantage of the offer. It is going away soon. So, if you have any interest in meditation and learning to meditate, please check out the information below.

What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

Many say that knowledge is power! Sometimes, though, the knowledge of how much money we make, what kind of lifestyle we have, and what kind of car we drive, makes the difference between choosing a vocation and a job. A vocation is a career that you are suited for and called to do in your heart by Spirit. A job is simply a vehicle to get you the money to do the “things” you would like to do in your life.

Many of us who have gone through the majority of our working career and have raised families realize, now, that what we had chosen was a job, not a vocation. Could it, now, be time to remodel our lives and choose a new path—perhaps, this time a vocation?

I recently decided that I wanted to make more time in my life to sing and act. This would be an avocation, as it would be more of a hobby or a part-time engagement. I have been doing much of what I enjoy doing in my work life as an entrepreneur with four types of work I do, but I actually trained in college to be a singer and an actor. I had let go of the artistic side of my life to pursue other dreams and actually make money enough to have a house and a nice car and a “modern family.” Fortunately, for me, though, most of what I do for money has been a vocation.

Now that I have attained all of things that make me comfortable in life, I feel that I have reverted to a young child asking the universe for a way to fulfill my open heart where my avocation is concerned. Is this not what happens to so many people at 50-60? So, how do we cause this to appear in our busy lives?

Many of you know that what we set in mind, we produce in kind in our lives. If this is true, we need to, first, decide to open our hearts to the calling of our true avocation or vocation. By that, I mean that every day we set an intention for spirit to guide us and open doors to create a new path of nurturing for ourselves and those whom our lives will touch once we change our path.

My affirmation for today is: “I am open and willing for great opportunity in my life, as Unlimited Good follows me all the days of my life and leads me to my avocation.”

The next thing we need to do is make space for our new life. We can’t expect Spirit to fill a vessel that is already full. You must look at your life and begin to make room for this new venture. I had to let go of one of four careers to open space for this new endeavor. This was a difficult choice, because teaching voice lessons had sustained me for a great many years—actually, 27 years. As I retire this part of my life that involved music, it would make sense that more music will flow into my life in new and different ways, through a different tributary.

Fleming Accidentally Kills Phlegm!

Fleming Accidentally Kills Phlegm!

Alexander Fleming made a chance discovery in a discarded Petri dish in 1928. The mold that had been contaminated in an abandoned experiment turned out to contained a powerful antibiotic, penicillin. Was it chance or destiny that the random, untidy acts of a bacteriologist caused a monumental change in the treatment of bacterial infections in the 1940s?

Remember how a candle maker accidently found Ivory soap in the days when bathing in a river made floating soap an anomaly? Could ideas be floating around like this soap, in the ethers, simply waiting for someone to observe and apply the principals of creation to what is in our every day life?

I absolutely know this to be so. About 20 years ago, I came up with an idea that was called “Toss ‘n Sauce.” Basically, I created five bottled sauces that could create instant dinners by adding noodles, vegetables or meat. I could not find a backer for the project. Twenty years later, almost every large manufacturer of food has a version of this kind of sauce creation for quick meals. If I had pursued the idea harder, could I have been a millionaire today? Maybe.

My dad was a great inventor. He implemented a way to color Easter eggs by affixing a small motor to two tiny cups to hold an egg. The motor would turn the egg so that his children could color eggs with a Q-tip and egg coloring. Every person who saw the device told my father to patent the device. He never did. Years later, the company, Paas, came out with the same idea and have sold millions.

Facebook had more than one person enveloped in its formation and discovery. A few people implemented some similar ideas coalescing to become what we know as the world’s most famous way to connect with friends and family.

Ideas, like God, are an unlimited source of power emanating from a place just beyond our deductive grasp. If we could get quiet enough, then that, which is invisible, could easily manifest in our minds to become the next great invention. Perhaps, you could be the next inventor of a grand idea that goes viral—or bacterial. (That one was for you, Alexander.)

Why Couldn't I Have Been Born into Wealth and When Depression Strikes

Why Couldn’t I Have Been Born into Wealth, and When Depression Strikes

As a poor kid growing up, the first few years of my life I lived in the lower middle class, sometimes having enough and sometimes not. I remember most times, three days before payday, we would have barley soup until there was money for more food. When I moved with my mother, my paradigm was switched to the project in tenth grade and living off of food stamps. I can tell you, my plea to God was often: “Why couldn’t I have been rich?”

Unfortunately, this is an attachment disorder to money. Because of being in need from a young age and never really having what I required for food or clothing, my anxiety level about having enough, in general, is attached to my subconscious for the long haul. Yes, attachment disorders are like herpes—they stay with you for life. The neural pathways that cause attachments are established at a young age and simply are a gut, super-conscious reaction to times when you feel as if you didn’t make enough money, the bills outweigh the income, or you simply don’t have enough to buy food.

These gut reactions supersede reason. They race to our minds before our deductive source has a chance to remind us: “Remember that check you’re getting next week? You’ll have enough for the bills.” Or “God has always provided for you in the past. You will pull through this!”

Even the best laid plans for the future can sometimes look bleak on a day when you simply wake up a little depressed. Perhaps you have a nagging headache or one of your muscles has been bothering you. This pain pulls you deeper into an ambiguous place where depression can catch you unaware.

“Are you taking your antidepressant?” That’s the first question I ask almost anyone who presents with these feelings. Often, clients and friends tell me that they wanted to “feel normal” so they stopped taking their medication for anxiety or low-grade depression. “Well, I simply was feeling okay. So, I decided to stop taking the meds,” is often what I hear.

You were feeling okay because you are ON your medication. That is why you have the temptation to stop the medication. Get back on a prescribed dosage of your medication, first, before you start freaking out about a current situation. It may be that your mind is slightly eschewed because of being off of your antidepressant.

When you get off of a medication like an antidepressant, your body slowly leeches out the medication from your brain, and often you will spiral down without you realizing it. I see this very often with clients. I’m not a physician. But you don’t have to be a physician to see the same symptom over and over again.

When I decide to taper off of a medication, this is called titrating from the mediation, then I always do it with a physician or a therapist. I make sure that when my body is completely replete of the medication that I am stable. You should do this too.

Unfortunately, if you are anything like me, you probably need to stay on a small dosage of your antidepressant for the rest of your life. Every time I have tried to get off of Selexa, I end up feeling slightly under the weather. I sense that life is fighting against me. I don’t have the will to fight back.

While on the medication, I get up feeling like life is on my side, most often. I would be remiss to tell you that, some days, I don’t feel like getting out of bed. That is just one of the problems with having a history of depression. You learn to cope. You learn to have people who will support you and help you to the forefront of your life. You keep people near you who will tell you, your spiritual truth, and stand you up, when you fall.

I hope this helps today, especially when the economy feels so unstable with the government taking baby steps to resolve big problems.

I published this questionnaire yesterday, but I’m going to do so again today, incase you didn’t have a chance to fill it out and send it back.

If you would do me a favor and copy the following portion of this blog to an email addressed to me: bosebastian5@gmail.com, then answer the questions, I would be very grateful.

The reason I’m asking is that out of the 40,000 people who read this a month, only one person made an order for an Mp3. This amazed me! Even with $7.00 off the original asking price from my storefront: www.shop.bosebastian.com, 99.99% of the readers didn’t care about things like meditation or gaining materials that would help them along with their spiritual practice. This is why I need to know what you need, before I spend $8500 on an interactive website:

Pansies, Fags, and Dykes—Flowers, Sticks and Ditches

Pansies, Fags, and Dykes—Flowers, Sticks and Ditches

I remember a time when a group of young dudes called a friend and I, “Faggot” as we drove by in my convertible. I thought, how did they know? What could either of us possibly have done to be called out like that?

I was about 40 and looked as I do today, fairly normal and not a bit “fiery” in clothes or in manner. I generally hadn’t gotten slurs yelled out at me, ever since I had adopted a more “straight approach” to clothes and hairstyles. Neither of us did anything out of the unordinary either. We actually were having a casual conversation about the death of a friend. Perhaps, two men riding around in a convertible at night looked gay. Who knows.

I remember yelling back at them, “Does it bother you?”

Anyway, what do flowers, a bundle of sticks, and flood banks have to do with individual personalities and personal sexual preference? I’ve often thought about why these words reference gay men and women, and why do the words sting so badly. So I did some research.

At the beginning of the 20th Century, dressing in bold fashionable clothes was called Pansying up! This is the first known reference to gay men, who traditionally dressed in a bolder more feminine way to stand out and be secretly noticed as gay, when it was a crime to be so.

The term dike has been researched to begin at a novel written in 1928 where the term Bulldyker was used to reference a masculine woman. Dike, meaning ditch, may be a term that describes the vulva. And bull often has been a term referring to masculinity. Put them together and you have this derogatory term.

Fag, however, was slightly harder to trace, even for gay historians. A Yiddish word describing homosexuals is Faygeleh. This may have been the source of the term. But “faggot” specifically used to mean a gay man is traced back to the 1920s when Earnest Hemmingway used the term in The Sun Also Rises in 1926: “You’re a hell of a good guy, and I’m fonder of you than anybody on earth. I couldn’t’ tell you that in New York. It’d mean I was a faggot.”

Some think the terms were coined from the very groups that now feel the terms pejorative. For example, some think the word faggot started when the straight-acting gay males used the term to delineate them from the more fiery, effeminate gay men. The straighter-acting gay men reserved the word “queer” for themselves.

I know, I’ve also heard the “N” word used by many African Americans in a joking and brotherly fashion.

I find that terms reflecting negativity are often softened by the casual use of the term by the very group they refer to. In other words, if the word feels like it hurts, use it a lot and use it to poke fun of the stereotype, then it won’t have as much of a sting.

I don’t like being stereotyped or called out for my differences. I suppose no one does. But the truth is words can hurt, especially young men and women and children who haven’t developed a thick skin to the terms.

Use your words with care and distinction. Try always to love first and judge later. Compassion is a high calling for those who walk a spiritual path. It is the first order of business in the Buddhist tradition and called to be a fruit of the spirit by Jesus in First Corinthians.

Fear of Letting Go and Insomnia

Fear of Letting Go and Insomnia!

After a three-day jaunt of stomach virus, I blinked my eyes this morning and realized I had been asleep for almost 48 hours solidly. I can hardly remember what I did, yesterday, I was so out of my body and out of my mind. When your body aches, the natural instinct of the spirit is to let go of the body and it’s pain and sleep.
This is how we heal naturally. Some people, however, will not let go of their bodies for fear they may die. Their fear of death outweighs the desire to get well.

In yoga the final pose of the asana, the movement portion, is call svasana. It means literally, corpse pose. You would have to wonder why the Ayurvedics decided that at the end of a hard workout you would need to be as still as a corpse to allow for your cells and your mind to memorize and absorb all the good work you have done in the workout.

The Vedic principals were fairly simple when broken down to the bare bones: if the human body is out of the way, then you will experience God, the creator. If you are made by God, you must essential be made of God. So, the breath—which keeps the body alive—held great importance to them. If a yogi could almost still the breath and find herself hovering over the body in a mock sleep and still be awake enough to experience the bliss, she hovered in the realm of God.

So, not letting go of the body from fear, could be a way that you prohibit yourself from healing. Most insomniacs have some fear of being out of control, so sleep alludes them. Primarily, sleep is when you are not in control at all. In fact, needing to be in control could cause a myriad of problems while you sleep.

In sleep, my goal is to put my body to rest with progressive relaxation or focus on the breath to quiet the body. I often imagine that my breath progressively retreats toward my feet. In other words, I imagine breathing from my mouth, then my heart, then my belly, then my knees, then my feet. When you can get your attention away from you head and thinking deliberate thoughts, often you allow your mind to quiet enough to sleep.

I have dealt with insomnia for many years. In fact, I got hooked on Ambien after a stint of being just fine with sleep. I suppose, if I look back, I can find the hook that got me stuck in an insomniatic loop of sleeplessness. Most people have some kind of anxiety that keeps them away while thinking deliberate thoughts. “What am I going to do without him? How will I pay the bills? What will I do to be the most prepared for work tomorrow?” You can’t sleep while you are in your deductive mind. It’s impossible. So, your mind might be awake, while your body is asleep, which usually is the case for insomniacs.

We go into a sort of trance state, and when the mind begins to get more anxious it wakes us from moving in the direction of sleep. Also, having a weak bladder can also contribute to insomnia. I know in times like that, I’m up about 3-4 times in a night in the bathroom.

To calm the issue of a weak bladder, you could take a mild sedative or an anxiety medication to keep your body feeling tired. This will lead you toward sleep. But, if you haven’t worked out your anxiety, you probably will find that it doesn’t matter how tired you, you won’t sleep restfully.

I have gone through this. I know from which I speak. Now, when I go to sleep, my mind must be clear and ready for rest. I take quiet time between watching television and going to bed. I usually do a set of relaxation exercises or stretches from yoga for about 15 minutes before I lay in bed. I do NOT have a television in my bedroom. If you have one, get rid of it. You may be ignoring sleep problems or even creating them by having a loud television blaring in the background of solid sleep. This scenario isn’t a good one.

Ultimately, if you have struggles with sleep, I would go to a hypnotist. The process of being self-hypnotized is the exact process the body needs for sleep. You probably have to teach yourself how to rest, as your body and mind have unlearned what naturally is a gift.
