The Intricate Past #livinginthepast #yournewstory #Spirituality #now

Remembering the old story about Lot’s wife, I imagined turning into a pillar of salt about a million times for looking at, mulling over, rewriting, and sifting over the DEVISIVE PAST. Why can’t we just let go of the past like two ducks squabbling on a peaceful lake? A second later, they float away gracefully, never looking back.
Getting over the past is an intricate problem most of us continue to battle. The problem with NOT getting over the past is that we waste so much time angry, in our depressed minds, and simply not being open to the awesomeness that COULD BE if we would just open our hearts, minds, and specifically our eyes to the present.
As a life coach, I often see how the past can stymie and stop someone cold in his or her tracks—just as that pillar of salt—unable to move forward with any strength or direction. How do we overcome what should be the simplest task: releasing and letting go?
We think of our mind often as our physical brain. This is an incorrect thought. The brain is a measurable physical organ. The mind is immeasurable.
The mind can stay encapsulated in the body, stuck in the never-ending stream of stories from the past. It has another option. The mind can climb on to a bridge above the stream of stories and simply observe. This observer mind is accessed through self-inquiry, silence, and listening to your own thoughts without judgment.
When we can become advanced enough in our own self-discovery, we learn to access the most important part of the mind that will lead us out of the past and into peace.
My own journey of recognizing how the past and my past stories have overwhelmed my life and took over my mind like a fast growing cancer is completely documented in my latest book, “Your New Story, Your New Life.”  The key to the change is in the book’s subtitle: The Metaphysical Mind.

Anti-Depression #depression #antidepressants #coping

In all of my years in practice as a life coach and clinical hypnotherapist (27 years), I have met many people who have suffered from some sort of depression. However, the difference between depression onset by a traumatic event, such as a death, or a divorce, or business loss, may go away in due time. But, clinical depression is a malfunction of the chemicals in the brain, so it has no onset, but may be triggered into worse depression with a tragic event. For some people with clinical depression, just like any kind neurological disorder, medication is required to stay afloat and keep a healthy amount of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine functioning in the body.

I remember the day clearly, some thirty years ago, when a psychiatrist told me that I would probably have to be on an antidepressant for the rest of my life. I thought to myself, this can’t be. I do everything that I can to stay healthy, workout, do therapy, stay spiritually grounded… how can I be depressed?

But the truth is that clinical depression has little or nothing to do with you personally. Most times it is inherited. Almost my entire family has some amount of it. It’s like a thyroid problem or weakened eyesight. We don’t blame ourselves for these malfunctions, but most people get very conscious of the stigma of taking an antidepressant. I have had many clients over the years use marijuana, alcohol, and other drugs of choice, but refuse to take an antidepressant. Maybe the stigma of depression was too much for them to face. These days, most antidepressants cost less for a month’s dosage than going out to lunch once.

Recently, I had a major change in my life. Everything was different. And I was grieving a break-up from someone I loved. A few people around me who were close enough to see me when my smiling veneer wasn’t plastered on my face could see that something was wrong. But, my defining moments were two things: I began to fear the things I don’t usually fear, and I had crying spells that seemed to come from nowhere or from minor difficulties. I had a close friend suggest that I go back to the doctors and get checked to see if my dosage was correct. (It hadn’t been changed in 15 years.)

Just thinking about going back to a place who diagnosed me of having this lifelong illness was traumatic. But, I knew that the friend was right. Almost immediately upon getting my medication adjusted—ever so slightly—I felt like my old self again. Literally, I wake up with a smile on my face as I had been doing until the trauma.

I’m not saying that every depressive bout needs a drug to take it away. Processing your grief is important, and I will continue to look at my grief and listen to my heart about how to deal with it. But taking an antidepressant to make me feel normal enough to cope with the grief was an important step to recovery.

Periodically, I like to remind people who suffer from depression that they are okay. Really, no one is judging you for having a clinical problem. In fact, if they are judging you, you have no room in your life for someone like that. More importantly, the only person’s opinions you should consider greatly are your own. You can’t control anyone else’s opinions, so you might as well get used to creating your own sense of security and truth. Life will treat you with the respect that you give yourself—always!

No Do-Overs: #Suicide and #Suicidal Thoughts

No Do-Overs:  #Suicide and #Suicidal Thoughts

On a cold day in winter, after I had lived in Nashville for one year, a friend from New Jersey called me who attended my church. He wanted me to be the last person he would talk to before the overdose, he just took, began to take effect. He shared with me that he just didn’t love life enough to stay with us. He said that his gay life was too painful, and he would rather be with God. At that time, I was a very devout Christian minister, and reminded him of the scripture that suggests, that if you take your own life, this is the worst sin. At that time, I believed in hell, and I thought my friend’s soul was destined for it.

As he was from 500 miles away, for some reason, he thought I could do nothing about his fate. But, after talking with him and saying goodbye, I looked up his address, called the local police, and saved him from his own misdoing. About two months later, I received a phone call from him. Though, he wasn’t angry with me, he was still depressed. I suggested that he see a psychologist and find some medicine that would help him with his depression.

My friend was one of 750,000 suicide attempts in the U.S. a year. This fact, according to Suicide.org, is rather amazing; but, only 30,000 of those 750,000 attempts, actually die. The main cause of these attempts is untreated depression.

So, most people who try suicide are crying out for help. Can we hear them? I had a doctor friend who had four children. His youngest child just couldn’t seem to kick drugs. He would start college, be doing fine, then, suddenly, my friend would get a call. His son was in the hospital because of an overdose. My dear friend tried to help in every way, even giving up his personal life to take care of and nurture his son. They went on mission trips together. They even both got engaged at the same time. Two weeks before the intended marriage, my friend’s son hung himself. Suicide is real. Depression is real. But, how much have we done as a nation and a society to help stop it? I’m not sure that we’ve done enough.

Three of my dearest friends in the world have committed suicide, with no indication in my mind that anything was even wrong. In fact, I would say the successful suicides are well thought out and are enacted without a hitch. The only issue is the right time and the perfect storm of emotions to make the act actually happen. Two of the three of my friends successfully killed themselves when they had begun a regimen of a new antidepressant for only about two weeks. One of the issues with taking an antidepressant is the risk of suicide in the first three weeks of taking the medication. If you have a client or friend who just started a new psychotropic medication, the effects of a new antidepressant can be euphoric and cause a sense of fearlessness, which causes someone who is planning suicide the perfect opportunity to enact a deed that would be frightening for most.

Be aware and get the fact. Maybe, you, too, can help someone silently crying out for help!

In July, I am moving to Southern Florida to begin a new small imprint publishing company called: Finding Authentic You Publishing: findingauthenticyoupublishing.com. Depression: The Silent Killer #depression #antidepressants #mentalillness

Depression: The Silent Killer
#depression #antidepressants #mentalillness

In the 90’s I had been in a committed, live-in relationship for seven years. I had discovered my partner was cheating, needed to leave him and our home together, wanted to leave him but was too comfortable, and felt paralyzed inside. Finally, I got the nerve to get my own apartment and venture out on my own. In the days that followed, I went to the doctor’s office for a yearly physical. The nurse practitioner asked me a few probing questions: “How are you feeling physically? Have you been through any situation where you have felt hurt or abused by another individual? Have you lost or gained weight without understanding why?”

In answering these questions, I broke down in tears in the office. I was still very saddened by the entire experience of the divorce. In the early 90s, antidepressants weren’t as common as they are now. The practitioner suggested I go on Zoloft and see if I feel better in a couple weeks. I had told him that I had been feeling down for almost two years, which concerned him. This news would concern me, as well, as a Life Coach. So, I did as he told me and took the medication. As the days unfolded, Zoloft made my stomach hurt. So, the practitioner tried another medication, Effexor, which didn’t seem to affect my digestion as much.

In three weeks, almost to the day, I felt as if I had crawled out of a very dark cave I had been living in—not just for two years—but my entire life. I saw trees and birds and nature as if I’d never ever recognized they existed around me 24-7. My entire life had been filled with abusive situations since I was young. Apparently, I moved into the inner recess of my mind to live for the rest of the hours of the day when my complete attention wasn’t needed.

I can remember people saying, “Isn’t that beautiful?” I would look at a flower or nature scene and simply wonder, what is beautiful? And, then, I would retreat back to my mind where everything was fantasy, and I could decide my fate with complete accuracy. I have been thankful to that psychiatric nurse practitioner who diagnosed my depression for my entire life, because I was, indeed, very depressed. I had gone undiagnosed for twenty years. I know for certain that many times in that twenty years I had suicidal ideations. Who knows if I would even be here to write about it, had I not been diagnosed.

Undiagnosed depression can cause many problems in the world. When you look at some of the world’s most terrible disasters, such as a student going on a shooting rampage at school and killing teachers and other students, we are simply looking at undiagnosed psychological disorders. So, who is responsible for these children and adults who can’t see for themselves that they have a problem? I remember discussing with a very good friend the need for him to get on an antidepressant. He was exhibiting all the signs that one sees in a depressed person: sleeping too much, gaining or losing weight, despondency, big highs and big lows, a great deal of illness, and a glazed over look in his eyes. He jumped down my throat and became angry with me. He thought that I was saying he was crazy. After I told him that I took an antidepressant, he still was angry. I explained about the need for serotonin in the brain to feel happy, but I really didn’t understand the dynamics of the brain then, so my explanation fell on deaf ears. Now, I was saying he was not only crazy but sick as well? I’m not sure. But, I don’t believe he ever got on any medication or went to the psychiatrist as I recommended. He stayed on a mental rolling coaster, until I quietly exited his life. This kind of exodus happens a great deal in depressed people’s lives, which only makes the problem worse.
Depression is all around us. We must take action and try to lead depressed people to help. All of the indicators of depression can easily be found on the Internet where anyone can see the contributing factors and even the medications that one can receive to help. We are in an age where these undiagnosed students should be found and helped before they reach the level of crying out for help by shooting people. No reason in the world exists for seven teachers a day to see a despondent child and not find a way to recommend to a parent, or someone in charge, that this student should get checked by a physician.
Helping yourself define your mental stability is all part of Finding Authentic You. Listen, I really need your help to buy my new book (below) and share it with friends. No project in this world launches without a community of people who value its importance. This is why I have made it $2.99 for the download version.

Sad Clowns: Signs of Suicide

Sad Clowns: Signs of Suicide

In one scholarly study about “Antidepressants and Suicide” written by Susan S. Jick and A. D. Dean, estimated 8.5% of 10,000 people studied resulted in suicide on their death certificates in a period of 180 days taking one of the 10 most common SSRIs. Out of the 143 suicides, 67 people had a history of suicidal tendencies. The rest did not. This is an extremely high amount of people dying because of a medication that should be causing the exact opposite reaction. Why is this so? Why is the public more aware?

It is estimated that a person takes his own life every fifteen minutes in the United States. The CDC lists suicide as the 10th leading cause of death in the US. I never knew that.

I had a very good friend who was everybody’s best bud. When he walked into the room it was “one singular sensation, every little step he took. One thrilling combination every move that he made. One smile and suddenly nobody else would do. You know you'd never be lonely with you know who. Sigh! Give him your attention. Do...I...really have to mention? He's the One!” (From “A Chorus Line”).

Unfortunately, my friend wasn’t the bundle of joy inside he let on. About two years ago he committed suicide. Everyone I know was shocked. I was completely devastated, because I had just had lunch with him the day before. He didn’t seem different. He didn’t appear to be contemplating the end. He just was my dear friend, playing the role of his life.

I looked for my passport yesterday and ended up cleaning out three drawers trying to find it. I figured I might as well use the time wisely and get rid of that dross that continues to collect when I’m not looking. I came across my dear friend’s funeral bulletin. A smiling picture of him took up most of the front cover. I spent a long time contemplating it… him. It seemed that fifteen minutes had been suspended in time. I could remember every moment with him, every conversation, and even the times he didn’t know I knew about, I remembered.

I suppose his demise crept up on me more strongly than normal, because another dear friend had suffered a devastating blow yesterday. I worried about the worst that could happen. I would never want a recap of the days I had heard of, now, too many friends who had taken their own lives. Suicide is so prevalent these days, but very few people talk about what to look for and how to prevent it.

I went out with a physician for three years who had a twenty-one year old son who just recently took his life on the eve of his wedding, after many years of struggling with addiction. No words could express the grief of his father or his betrothed. I had no words of reconciliation for the man I loved for years. Yet, with his son there was a knowing that something like this might happen. His son always danced on a tightrope, falling occasionally into that net below—generally his father was the net. I always wondered what would happen if the net weren’t there.

With a few of my dear friends who have committed suicide, this was not the case. These friends were joyful, loving, giving, and one was even a life coach. I wonder what her clients thought when they heard the news.

In almost every case of suicide in my life there had been a contributing factor: the person had either just changed the dosage of an antidepressant or just started a psychotropic drug. One of the precautions clearly written on any antidepressant is the risk of suicide in the first three weeks of taking one. Why is this so?

I remember a time when I first started taking an antidepressant in 1990. I had been taking Zoloft for two weeks when I went on a vacation to the Grand Canyon with my nephew.

A tree limb about the size of a railroad tie projected from the side of the precipice where we stood. For some strange reason, I decided I wanted to see what the canyon looked like from the end of that tree limb. Nothing could stop me from finding out. I had absolutely no fear of falling.

Before the antidepressant you couldn’t have chained me to that limb. When I played the role of the Fiddler in “Fiddler on the Roof,” at TPAC, the producers had to create a way to hook me to the roof to sit 12 feet above the stage without wanting to faint. Everyone laughed at the premise of this roof fiddler being afraid of heights. I tell you the story to juxtapose how afraid I was compared to the fearlessness after taking Zoloft. I do remember my nephew screaming and crying, “Uncle Bo, please come down from there. You are scaring me!”

Then, I didn’t think the climbing out on a limb was that much of a risk. Now, I know differently. In the first few weeks of taking an antidepressant, people tend to do things they were afraid to do in the past. If one has been afraid to take his life, the inclination may be to actually follow through with it. I believe, that the above reason is probably the biggest risk of taking the antidepressant. Of course, increased dosages will also create the same kinds of illusions.

So, if you have a friend or family member who has just begun a course of antidepressants, it is best to watch his or her behavior carefully those first few weeks. If you know that same person has had thoughts of suicide, make sure you tell the prescribing doctor, because the patient probably didn’t tell the doctor. The reason why she or he didn’t explain is because more and more family practitioners and Internists are prescribing psychotropic drugs without proper counsel.

I remember one time going into a doctor with whom I had just started treatment. I explained that I had been taking an antidepressant and would like for the doctor to continue with the same dosage. I gave the doctor the name of the drug and the dosage. The physician never blinked. He simply wrote out the prescription.

Don’t get me wrong, I think antidepressants saved my life. However, I also believe that people should be monitored more closely during the first few weeks of taking them. I get the strong feelings some of my friend’s lives could have been saved had that been the case.

Go to Week 3 of the “Year to CLEAR Challenge” at www.Bosebastian.com

______________________________________________

Below is information that I will be sharing for about a month, as not every person on my list reads the blog every day. If you have already read it, just skip over it. Thanks for understanding.

A Year to CLEAR Challenge:
(Please Know: You Can Join Us At Any Point in the Year Challenge.)

The masses search outward for things that qualify them as a person, but I always go inward for that which quantifies me for greatness. At twenty-five I preached on street corners in NYC as an in-the-closet Pentecostal minister. One day I heard a still small voice say, ‘God cannot be contained in a book or a law or even in a religion. Dig deeper, reach further to find me, and you will find your authentic Self.’”

A Year to CLEAR Challenge!

The acronym CLEAR stands for (Compassionate, Loving, Enthusiastic, And Relationship-Ready). The goal of this project is to engulf readers in a weekly study that will transform them by removing blocks, promote self-growth, and give them wings to fly freely into daily life. Each week, by going to BoSebastian.com and choosing the Year to CLEAR Challenge tab, a new challenge or thought to provoke conversation, growth, and group functionality.

My vision is to make Finding Authentic You the book to have in your Kindle or on your computer. The book is a comprehensive look at growth—spiritually, mentally, and physically.

As a yoga teacher and student of the Ayurvedic tradition, I bring to the table understanding of physical challenges, the ability to overcome mental problems with Life & Health Coaching, as well as hypnotherapy, and expertise in meditation and spirituality as a minister.

The combination of all three in one book with an interactive connection to like-minded readers, for one year, is what makes this Year to CLEAR Challenge a must-do for every spiritual seeker.

The One-Year Approach to Change

No one believes he or she can change overnight. But success in change comes from the metaphors of nature. Seasonally, life changes all around us in nature. Finding Authentic You offers a gradual change perspective, looking at the triune aspects of change as in yoga: Body, Mind and Spirit.

Accessing the ability to change and finding yourself actually pursuing change must be a daily search, which I call getting to the “observer mind.”

In this frontal cortex of the brain we find the anatomy of change and the power to counter every negative trigger of the human process. The workings of Hypnosis, NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) are all positive actions to help the mind and body flow to a positive space for change.

Every aspect of FINDING AUTHENTIC YOU fulfills this constant need for diffusing the negative past and dreaming of a fulfilling future.

Step 1: Recognize That Change is Inevitable
Step 2: Release from Resistance to Change
Step 3: Understanding Change and Allow Spirit to Define It
Step 4: A History Lesson—About You
Step 5: Look at Your Past with Compassion
Step 6: Making a Strong Commitment to Change
Step 7: Dream Your Fabulous Future

Why Couldn't I Have Been Born into Wealth and When Depression Strikes

Why Couldn’t I Have Been Born into Wealth, and When Depression Strikes

As a poor kid growing up, the first few years of my life I lived in the lower middle class, sometimes having enough and sometimes not. I remember most times, three days before payday, we would have barley soup until there was money for more food. When I moved with my mother, my paradigm was switched to the project in tenth grade and living off of food stamps. I can tell you, my plea to God was often: “Why couldn’t I have been rich?”

Unfortunately, this is an attachment disorder to money. Because of being in need from a young age and never really having what I required for food or clothing, my anxiety level about having enough, in general, is attached to my subconscious for the long haul. Yes, attachment disorders are like herpes—they stay with you for life. The neural pathways that cause attachments are established at a young age and simply are a gut, super-conscious reaction to times when you feel as if you didn’t make enough money, the bills outweigh the income, or you simply don’t have enough to buy food.

These gut reactions supersede reason. They race to our minds before our deductive source has a chance to remind us: “Remember that check you’re getting next week? You’ll have enough for the bills.” Or “God has always provided for you in the past. You will pull through this!”

Even the best laid plans for the future can sometimes look bleak on a day when you simply wake up a little depressed. Perhaps you have a nagging headache or one of your muscles has been bothering you. This pain pulls you deeper into an ambiguous place where depression can catch you unaware.

“Are you taking your antidepressant?” That’s the first question I ask almost anyone who presents with these feelings. Often, clients and friends tell me that they wanted to “feel normal” so they stopped taking their medication for anxiety or low-grade depression. “Well, I simply was feeling okay. So, I decided to stop taking the meds,” is often what I hear.

You were feeling okay because you are ON your medication. That is why you have the temptation to stop the medication. Get back on a prescribed dosage of your medication, first, before you start freaking out about a current situation. It may be that your mind is slightly eschewed because of being off of your antidepressant.

When you get off of a medication like an antidepressant, your body slowly leeches out the medication from your brain, and often you will spiral down without you realizing it. I see this very often with clients. I’m not a physician. But you don’t have to be a physician to see the same symptom over and over again.

When I decide to taper off of a medication, this is called titrating from the mediation, then I always do it with a physician or a therapist. I make sure that when my body is completely replete of the medication that I am stable. You should do this too.

Unfortunately, if you are anything like me, you probably need to stay on a small dosage of your antidepressant for the rest of your life. Every time I have tried to get off of Selexa, I end up feeling slightly under the weather. I sense that life is fighting against me. I don’t have the will to fight back.

While on the medication, I get up feeling like life is on my side, most often. I would be remiss to tell you that, some days, I don’t feel like getting out of bed. That is just one of the problems with having a history of depression. You learn to cope. You learn to have people who will support you and help you to the forefront of your life. You keep people near you who will tell you, your spiritual truth, and stand you up, when you fall.

I hope this helps today, especially when the economy feels so unstable with the government taking baby steps to resolve big problems.

I published this questionnaire yesterday, but I’m going to do so again today, incase you didn’t have a chance to fill it out and send it back.

If you would do me a favor and copy the following portion of this blog to an email addressed to me: bosebastian5@gmail.com, then answer the questions, I would be very grateful.

The reason I’m asking is that out of the 40,000 people who read this a month, only one person made an order for an Mp3. This amazed me! Even with $7.00 off the original asking price from my storefront: www.shop.bosebastian.com, 99.99% of the readers didn’t care about things like meditation or gaining materials that would help them along with their spiritual practice. This is why I need to know what you need, before I spend $8500 on an interactive website:

_________________             Would you be interested in joining a study group that would meet one evening a week for a year to start a Year to Clear Challenge?

_________________             If so, what city do you live in? ________________________________

_________________             If this meeting had a nominal fee or a collection for the charge of renting the space, would you still be interested?

_________________             If the blog expanded to an interactive website, would you be on board to participate if it were at no cost to you? Basically, this would mean getting a daily spiritual, mental or physical challenge.

_________________             If I offered Tiers of membership, where the first tier would be free, the second, third and forth tiers would give you options to contact me for coaching advice on line, get free mp3s, and daily mp3 downloads to listen to on the way to work, would you be interested in paying for a tier beyond the free service?

_________________             If I offered to create an MP3 download of each blog every day and send it to your cell phone via email, would that be a convenience you would enjoy, so that you could listen to it on the way to work or coming home from work in the car?

_________________             Is this convenience for which you would pay $5 a month?

_________________             If I offered a place in my web store to donate to this cause of spreading spiritual knowledge, would this be a better means of contributing via credit card?

_________________             Lastly, would you rather not hear from me besides getting the daily blog? (It’s okay to be honest.)
