Fermenting Lessons #diet #exercise #overdoing #becomingconscious #whatstrending #psychology #spiritualliving

I know a great deal about the fermentation process to make beer, because I actually made it once when I was a child, but I had no idea about the fermentation process when a person becomes anaerobic during exercise.

Fermentation is an anaerobic process in which energy can be released from glucose even though oxygen is not available. Fermentation occurs in yeast cells, and a form of fermentation takes place in bacteria and in the muscle cells of all humans, as well. When muscle cells contract too frequently—as in strenuous exercise, they rapidly use up their oxygen supply. As a result, the electron transport system and Krebs cycle slow considerably, and ATP production (Cellular Respiration) is slowed.

However, muscle cells have the ability to produce a small amount of ATP through glycolysis in the absence of oxygen. The muscle cells convert glucose to pyruvic acid. An enzyme in the muscle cells then converts the pyruvic acid to lactic acid. As in yeast to make beer, this reaction frees up the NAD (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is an essential metabolite in all human cells. It plays a key role in cellular metabolism within the “powerhouses of the cell”, the mitochondria). While providing the cells with two ATP molecules from glycolysis, eventually, however, the lactic acid buildup causes intense fatigue, and the muscle stops contracting.

This is why muscles ache when we over do it during a workout. Even though your trainer says to soak in a hot Epson salts bath and drink lots of water, you may have less aches by taking her advice, but the process of cell fermentation still exists, and so will aches and pains.

You may be wondering why I’m explaining this is an, otherwise, spiritual blog. Well, I have a reason… and you probably were just waiting for it. Right? Yes, Bo’s experience with life, exercise, and spirituality have collided once again.

I had been exercising about two hours a day for a month, now, without a deliberate break, trying to get release this beautifully cherub-like pudginess between my ribs and hips which has risen to a 20 lb. all-time high. As part of my new diet, I have also kept my caloric intake to 500-600 for five meals a day, resulting in a whopping 14 pound loss in a month. Not only that, I have lost about 75% off that cherub-pudginess. However, yesterday, I couldn’t get out of bed to go workout. Every muscle in my body ached. Every ounce of energy in my brain was gone, as well. And I didn’t even want to meditate or pray. This is unusual for me. I’m highly motivated, especially when I have a goal in mind.

So, one absolute for me, now, is to listen to my body and ask the appropriate questions of it. I, then, ask Spirit to teach me any lessons I need to know. “Fermenting Lessons” was the result. It’s a simple lesson, yet an important one. Here it is: When you decide to change your life and make deliberate change in your diet and exercise regimen, give yourself a day every once in a while to take a break. If you don’t rest, you’ll end up fermented and tied in knots like I was.

Let’s take this a step further with spiritual or psychological development (with the exception of any 12-step issues), give yourself a break one day a week. That’s what “a day of rest” is meant for traditionally in the Christian culture. This resting time actually helps your body recover and build stronger muscles. With the diet process, if your body goes into starvation mode from too much dieting, you won’t lose weight anyway. So, you have to let your body know it’s not starving by giving yourself a SMALL treat every once in a while.

Weight Loss on the Holiday: Digging Myself Out of the Just One More ??? Hole!

When I got to Florida, I was so proud of myself, because I had gotten down to a weight that I had not seen for ten years. Slowly, but surely, the weight began to return with a vengeance. However, I had a swimming pool that I used to do laps and then a yoga practice to stretch everyday while it was warm enough. Now, I’m doing no aerobics and eating the entire holiday table. Honestly, I feel as if I have done better than everyone else around me, taking smaller helpings and eating one instead of ten desserts, but I still have gained ten pounds in four months. What to do?

Well, we all know that New Years is right around the bend. Most of us are secretly whispering to ourselves: “I have just one more week to cheat, then I will get back to my regular diet and to exercising this extra weight off.”

The problem with this theory is that you will need approximately three months to get ten pounds off, especially if this is JUST holiday weight. I guarantee you that you will have the impetus to last a month doing all the right things—eating the correct food, exercising daily for an hour. But most people poop out after that. Suddenly, a new holiday appears where chocolate is the presiding gift. And the same dialogue goes through our minds: “Just a couple of days for Valentine’s day to over do it.” Then, a spring vacation comes. Then two birthdays in a row with cake and more cake.

I really felt as if I had a handle on this problem after all of my trials the last two years in gaining and losing weight. But, apparently, I’m just as human as everyone around me. If my dog smells steak after eating his entire bowl of food, he’s going to eat it no matter how hungry he is. I believe we all have that innate desire.

Too late in the process, I decided that I can say to myself: “Hey, Bo, those desserts will be there tomorrow if you want another one. I know that first one tasted so good. But waiting until tomorrow can be a great way to show yourself that you have control!” I, also, really should have made it to the gym more during the holiday, especially since waiting in traffic and on long lines did anything but give me exercise. Exhaustion, yes, but not exercise.
So, I’m headed to the gym today to do my hour of aerobics and begin a new regimen of eating anything but leftover holiday junk.

Then, my mother yells, “Dinner,” at 10 p.m. She served my favorite, PASTA!

After Three Months of Gluten Free #diet #health #weightloss #weightgain

After Three Months of Gluten Free
#diet #health #weightloss #weightgain

I got on the scale 3 days ago and, alas, I hit my 20 lb. loss mark! I was so excited, I overate for three days and gained 3 pounds back. But, I didn’t just eat the way I had been eating the prior three months, I ate some pasta and bread—gluten! I feel awful. Not just psychologically, because I have back-peddled, but my stomach aches, my belly is bloated, and I can’t think straight. All of my symptoms have been chemically and physiologically related to eating wheat. If you haven’t tried going gluten free, you may want to try the diet after reading this blog.

For ten years I had been experiencing IBS symptoms, migraines, and developed a bad arthritic condition, specific to my right hip flexors. After eating, I always felt sick to my stomach, acidy, which would lead me to eating more carbohydrates to settle the discomfort. After entering my forties, I wasn’t able to slough off the extra pounds so easily. And, unfortunately, the weight collected around my belly, no matter how many abdominal exercises I did. Also, the aches continued to worsen, even though I did yoga 3-5 times a week.

Here is the scientific low down on gluten:

1.) All of today’s wheat has been genetically modified (MGO), which causes a chemical similar to an opiate to react with your brain. Scientists from the wheat industry modified many years ago wheat to keep us eating those bad carbohydrates.

2.) A syndrome called “wheat belly” is common in people who eat or drink too many wheat products. Basically, this is a potbelly (from beer, vodka, and too many carbohydrates). Sorry, friends, most vodka and beer are made from wheat. However, the good news is that there are some beer and vodka that is gluten free now
.
3.) Systemically, wheat belly causes an acid base, first, in the stomach, then in the entire body. An acidic body causes pains, aches, and an inability to heal efficiently.

4.) Your brain is also effected by this GMO wheat. When you eat wheat, free radicals flow to the brain, linked to many brain diseases: dementia, migraines, Alzheimer's, and depression, to name a few.

I, personally, found that after being gluten free for just two weeks, almost all of my stomach symptoms went away. I began to feel that my mind was clearer and my migraines—which were happening 2-3 times a week—have gone completely. I, also, began to see a major difference in the arthritic condition in my body. After 3 months, I can do poses in yoga I haven’t been able to do for ten years.

So, why would I “choose” to eat wheat after 3 months, losing 20 pounds, and feeling so much better? The syndrome is called “a habit.” Habits are not just connected to your deductive brain, they are a neurological problem, as well; especially when chemical dependency is your problem. If you think you can WILL yourself to quit smoking, stop using drugs, or lose weight, you are probably wrong. I have been a hypnotherapist for over 20 years, helping people make effective change. The constant in this process is the inability to keep your habit changed for 2-3 years. Scientists have recently proven that specific to weight loss, the body and brain continue to want to return to homeostasis, which means it resists change for up to 3 years. So, your diligence to keep the change happening (diets, alcohol or drug free, smoke free) for that long is imperative to making lasting change, especially with diet.

So, will I go back to being completely gluten free today? You bet my ass I will!

Lost those Last Few Pounds #exercise #diet #weightloss

Lose Those Last Few Pounds #exercise #diet #weightloss

As promised, I’m writing a Discovery about exercise that can help you lose those extra pounds without forcing you to go to the gym after a hard day’s work. Here’s what I do, and I am still losing weight. I have three more pounds, until I’m at my fighting weight, and this is what I did last night for exercise. I took my fitness ball into the living room and bounced on it for 45-50 minutes, while I watched the television show “Arrow.” This is one of my favorite sci-fi shows, so I was completely engulfed in it. I can’t even remember bouncing. I got my 45-50 minutes of cardio in and was able to watch a great television show at the same time. Now that’s cool!

I have had many people take out their fitness ball and do a few different kinds of exercise on it. It just so happens, you can do about 4-5 different exercises that won’t even get you off of the ball. One that takes a shift to the couch or a chair is to put the ball under your feet, and bounce your legs up and down on the ball. While you do this, pull your tummy in as if you pressing down toward your back. So, every movement of power has a tummy tuck with it. When you bounce, you can do the same thing. Pull the navel in toward the back for a few bounces. Let it loose for a few bounces! This will work that much needed abdominal area while you exercise.

Another exercise you can do with the ball is to lie on the ball, face down. As you exhale, simply pull you tummy back, squeeze your buttocks together, and lift your chest up off of the ball. Of you can lift the opposite arm and opposite leg at the same time. This will work your back muscles.

After you’re finished, you can relax backward on the ball and stretch out your back. Feels great.

One caveat… If you are older and a bit unsteady, make sure the fitness ball is next to something solid and unmoving. I keep my fitness ball wedged between the couch and a chair for support. I hold on to the couch while I bounce, if I’m feeling unsteady.

The other simple exercise option is to get a yoga video and learn a few relaxing exercises and strengthening exercises. Then, without the video, do them in your bedroom before bed, or in the living room after your food has digested. This one takes a little more prep, but will also help you relax your muscles before bed. You can get my fitness video: Boga Fitness and learn some great exercises that are tailor-made for you.

I guarantee you that, if you stay on the diet from the past two days and do the exercise, you will lose weight! I have put some of my clients on this same diet, and we are all kicking butt!  Get healthy. Also, if you need some subconscious motivation, go to my web store and for $3, download the weight loss MP3 and listen to it daily for a week. Bo

Having Pancakes for Dinner? #diet #weightloss

Having Pancakes for Dinner? #diet #weightloss

I recently took a 7-day Caribbean cruise where food is absolutely the largest attraction on the ship. Granted, the chefs always had healthy choices available, next to each healthy vegetable were ten different ways you could gain an extra pound. One of the facts the cruise director told us on at the beginning of the cruise was that most people gain three pounds a day on a cruise ship. THREE POUNDS A DAY! Do you know what you would look like in a month? Is it even possible to gain 90 lbs in a month?

What I know for certain, by experience, is that most people do not know what healthy eating looks like. When clients come in for weight loss hypnosis, they always say that they know everything they are “supposed” to do, but simply can’t make themselves do it. But, then I ask an individual what a healthy breakfast or lunch looks like, and some even say McDonalds pancake breakfast for dinner. It has meat, carbs and fat, right? I’m not joking!

So, what I thought I would do is spell out what I believe healthy choices are for those of you who think you are dieting, but may not be by virtue of food choices. But more importantly talk about quantity of food.

Most people forget that each item of food you eat has a caloric or energy intake. So, when you put 2000 calories into your body, and only use 500 in a day, you operate on a overload daily, which leads to weight gain every time. If you have to be sedentary because of illness, you simply have to deploy a new way of taking in less calories; otherwise, you will gain weight every time. This is why Weight Watchers has so many people losing weight. Their premise operates on caloric counting.

I do believe that healthy weight loss has to have a lot more than calorie counting involved; otherwise, you will have that 500 calorie hot fudge cookie before you eat the broccoli. That’s simply not a good thing to do every day if you want the amount of iron, nutrition, and fiber you need.

I look at food in 3 different groups: bad carbs, good carbs, and protein. Fat, we’ll consider an additive. Bad carbs are mostly white things, sugars, desserts, bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes. Good carbs are vegetables and fruit. (I know some people consider pasta a complex carbohydrate, but for simplicity sake, let’s say that it’s part of the “weight gaining carbs” right now.) Protein is meat, fish, vegetarian protein, nuts, beans, cheese, and milk—granted, the beans, cheese, and milk have protein, but also have carbohydrate and fat in them.

For a good diet to work, you have to a have a combination of good carbs and protein and healthy fat (not including any hydrogenated or heated oils). The key to making the right choice is in the ratio of carbs, to protein, to fat. The most effective use of food—for it to turn into healthy energy—is when you have about a palm-sized portion of protein, two palm-sized portions of a good carbs, and a modicum of healthy fat ranging in the teaspoon to tablespoon range depending on what kind of fat you use. If it’s an avocado, which is a healthy fat, you may want a tablespoon. If it’s meat fat, definitely use a lower amount.

Okay, this is my simple, healthy lesson about food today. Tomorrow I’ll conquer exercise.

I guarantee you that, if you stay on this diet and do the exercise, you will lose weight! I have put some of my clients on this same diet, and we are all kicking butt!  Get healthy. Also, if you need some subconscious motivation, go to my web store and for $3, download the weight loss MP3 and listen to it daily for a week. Bo

Lose 10 Pounds in 2 Weeks #weightloss #diets #drewcarey #paleo

Lose 10 Pounds in 2 Weeks #weightloss #diets #drewcarey #paleo

Drew Carey said, “Eating Crappy food isn’t a reward—it’s a punishment!” I’d have to totally agree with him. Also, I’d add to that: punishing yourself for something someone else did to you is like “drinking poison and hoping the other person dies,” which is a quote from Joyce Meyer relating to forgiveness. Either way, self-punishment is not the way to lose weight or to garner self-esteem. I tried a new diet that I devised, and I lost a much-needed 10.5 pounds in just about 2 weeks. Here’s what I did.

(Just a note: I have tried many other forms of dieting. If you have been following my blog, you know. But tailor making the diet for you is important. I think the Paleo diet was close, but had too much protein and fat for my body. I tended to feel a little sick to my stomach. On my new diet, my stomach has actually felt great, even when I’m getting hungry. I’ve come to not overreact when I feel tinges of hunger. I wait until I’m feeling hunger in a healthy way now, before I actually eat.)

Start the day: I weigh in every morning before the day begins to keep an accurate, stable analysis. After I get up, I assess if I’m even hungry. Sometimes I’m not, and I’ll wait to eat for an hour, but not longer. I have taken to only drinking about a ¼ cup of coffee because of the acid content. I like a little caffeine, but not enough to make my stomach sour.

I have been eating only one cup of steel cut oats in the morning. I make them myself once a week and freeze one-cup portions in the freezer. I defrost them in the morning. If I can eat them with just a little 2% milk and no agave nectar, I do that. If I feel as if I need a bit of sugar (at first, I needed some sweet), I added less than a tablespoon of agave or coconut sugar. Sometimes, like today, I didn’t feel as if I wanted the entire cup, so I put it back in the plastic container for another day. Oats don’t go bad for a while if they are refrigerated.

A note: I have found that weaning off of agave nectar and salt on food has added an ingredient to dieting I hadn’t thought of: the less savory or sweet something is, the less desire you have to eat beyond your hunger. So, without sugar, I’m able to gauge when I’m simply full without the added ingredient of desiring the rest because it just taste so good and sweet or savory.

With less food in my stomach, I am more apt to want to work out before lunch. I have been doing the Step Machine or a yoga workout focusing on my abs almost everyday. If I wait to workout till the evening, I find it harder to get motivated. You have to try and get at least 30-40 minutes of exercise in each day, or the food portion of the diet will be minimized, at best. “If you put energy in, use that energy.”

For lunch, I have been eating steamed broccoli, carrots, onion, and kale with a teaspoon of melted, real butter. With this meal, you may want to add a bit of salt (using different kinds of salt from various parts of the world is very good for your body—of course, you have to buy them at Whole Foods or a specialty store), because you actually want to eat the entire portion of vegetables, even though it appears to be a lot of food. I have an entire cereal bowl of veggies, parboiled, and not cooked to death. Make sure they are still a bit crunchy. Honestly, I had no idea how much I enjoyed vegetables until now. I have been craving them every day. I actually look forward to the part of my meal I usually would save for last. I eat no added protein for lunch.

I have a piece of fruit or a low fat yogurt for a snack.

At dinner, I eat the most protein. I have about a palm-sized portion or more of some kind of protein, tender and not so fatty. Also, I may eat a very small portion of a carb, such as rice or potato or gluten free pasta (I am totally gluten free now, which I believe has helped as well) and a salad—everyday a salad. For dessert, if I’m still hungry and want that little something extra, I eat a dessert-sized ramekin of Jello (sugar free is okay).

At night, for a snack I have a couple of different things. I have been rolling up a piece of lowfat cheese in a piece of ham. I may eat a small bag of popcorn (this tends to be my go-to, because it’s crunchy and fills me up). Eating the protein and popcorn together is okay. I have done both and still lose weight. Also, in times of great desire (especially at the beginning of the diet), I had one, gluten free cookie.

Bo
