A year ago, I had a friend pass away just two weeks after he retired. His entire life he spent waiting for his 65th birthday. He had a cool million stashed away. He had a vision board of the places he would travel, people he would meet, and life he would lead. But, unfortunately, he never got to do any of it. He was one of those people who lived three weeks of every year on vacation. The rest of the time he spent working, thinking of work, stashing away money for retirement, and worrying about work some more.
Spirit didn’t frame the world in love and have gorgeous life bursting all around us to keep us from life 49 weeks of the year. No! Life is meant to live every day, every hour, every moment.
Buddha said: Do not dwell in the past. Do not dream of the future. Concentrate the mind on the present moment.
In fact, much of Buddhist theory is about living in the present moment. The idea is that no other moment is real. The past is gone. The present is just a thought. But, this moment, this absolute NOW is all we have. So, if you miss it, spend all your time dwelling in the past, or dream of the future, you have denied the very present, which holds all of the truth you need to live.
This makes so much sense, so you would think that most people would try to stay present. Think, however, about why people visit the past and dream of the future. The one big issue that sticks out the most is that they don’t like their lives now.
If you don’t like your present life, don’t resent those who helped you get there or dream of not being where you are. Take your present moments to make a plan for change. Begin now to start taking each moment and using it to create a life worth living.
Take it from me, someone who has, finally, at 54 years old, started truly living my dream. I stand in awesome amazement almost every moment of every day of how perfectly life unfolds when I’m standing there waiting for it—no matter what comes my way.
