Rising Tide of Serial Social Networking: #Facebook #Twitter #Linkedin

Rising Tide of Serial Social Networking: #Facebook #Twitter #Linkedin

In February of 2006 only 2% of Americans were using Facebook. In December of 2010 almost 98% of Americans were using Facebook. Someone made a great investment in Mark Zuckerberg. Or did the gods make an investment in social networking—the intra-connection to the world?

When I first began using Facebook, my wish was that everyone I knew could be users. I loved the idea of being minutes away from everyone else’s business. I could see photographs, hear comments, and find out the latest news in all my friends lives without having to call, snoop, or inquire.

If I decided to comment on their news, I could simply add a few words and I felt as if I had connected to a part of the world that I normally would have had to try harder to get to. In other words, my lazy ass got all excited the fact that it could sit down behind my computer and connect with people I normally wouldn’t have time to call, write, or see. That is the divine luxury of serial social networking.

The problem, however, is getting out from behind the computer and actually connecting with the people I normally would have gotten together with, but now feel as if I have more than enough information about them to fill up an hour’s lunch conversation. Yikes, I have bit into the cyber bug, and can’t seem to find a healthy balance—yet.

I know for certain that I am trying with all my might to get to the gym a couple times a week and even get out with friends once a week. I get to church once a week. Have I fulfilled the social protocol with that many jaunts from my home? Or should I make more of an effort to connect with people face to face? I guess, that is the simple question. Are we becoming a nation of simple-minded folks with lots of opinions who just #block people who don’t resonate without our likes and dislikes? I know I have taken to shutting down a few opinionated people who disrupt my cool atmosphere of fun-loving peeps.

This, too, creates imbalance. The real world has all kinds of people in it with all different types of ideas about everything. If we BLOCK the friends with varying opinions then we don’t get a picture of the real world as we sit behind our Cyber City we created with all the loving people we care to spend time with and hear about their lives.

Maybe this is the key: the Internet world gets to be our fantasy town of people we actually want to involve in our lives. The rest can wait while we spend time with the people we truly care about and enjoy their varying, but not opposing, opinions. I think I can live with that scenario.

Look for MY LATEST BOOK:  “Finding Authentic You, 7 Steps to Effective Change” with a Year to CLEAR (C-larity, L-ove, E-nthusiasm A-nd R-elationship-Ready) on my Website in the Webstore. Thanks!

Below is information that I will be sharing for about a month, as not every person on my list reads the blog every day. If you have already read it, just skip over it. Thanks for understanding.

A Year to CLEAR Challenge:
(Please Know: You Can Join Us At Any Point in the Year Challenge.)

The masses search outward for things that qualify them as a person, but I always go inward for that which quantifies me for greatness. At twenty-five I preached on street corners in NYC as an in-the-closet Pentecostal minister. One day I heard a still small voice say, ‘God cannot be contained in a book or a law or even in a religion. Dig deeper, reach further to find me, and you will find your authentic Self.’”

A Year to CLEAR Challenge!

The acronym CLEAR stands for (Compassionate, Loving, Enthusiastic, And Relationship-Ready). The goal of this project is to engulf readers in a weekly study that will transform them by removing blocks, promote self-growth, and give them wings to fly freely into daily life. Each week, by going to BoSebastian.com and choosing the Year to CLEAR Challenge tab, a new challenge or thought to provoke conversation, growth, and group functionality.

My vision is to make Finding Authentic You the book to have in your Kindle or on your computer. The book is a comprehensive look at growth—spiritually, mentally, and physically.

As a yoga teacher and student of the Ayurvedic tradition, I bring to the table understanding of physical challenges, the ability to overcome mental problems with Life & Health Coaching, as well as hypnotherapy, and expertise in meditation and spirituality as a minister.

The combination of all three in one book with an interactive connection to like-minded readers, for one year, is what makes this Year to CLEAR Challenge a must-do for every spiritual seeker.

The One-Year Approach to Change

No one believes he or she can change overnight. But success in change comes from the metaphors of nature. Seasonally, life changes all around us in nature. Finding Authentic You offers a gradual change perspective, looking at the triune aspects of change as in yoga: Body, Mind and Spirit.

Accessing the ability to change and finding yourself actually pursuing change must be a daily search, which I call getting to the “observer mind.”

In this frontal cortex of the brain we find the anatomy of change and the power to counter every negative trigger of the human process. The workings of Hypnosis, NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) are all positive actions to help the mind and body flow to a positive space for change.

Every aspect of FINDING AUTHENTIC YOU fulfills this constant need for diffusing the negative past and dreaming of a fulfilling future.

Step 1: Recognize That Change is Inevitable
Step 2: Release from Resistance to Change
Step 3: Understanding Change and Allow Spirit to Define It

Lives Falsely Imprisoned: #NelsonMandela

Falsely Imprisoned: #NelsonMandela

The first time I saw the word #Apartheid was in a monologue from an English play I learned for an acting audition. In college at twenty years old, I didn’t even know it meant segregation in South Africa. When I researched the word, I realized, even though I had never used the term, I had certainly felt the underwhelming resolve of apartheid in America and also in my own life as a gay man in a straight world.

Nelson Mandela fought a good fight and stayed in prison for a large majority of his adult life because of how committed he was to his core beliefs. When the South African government released Mandela, he almost immediately arose to power for four years. People of South Africa cried in the streets when the segregation had met its match, and anti-apartheid support won the battle for equality. Mandela’s life remains something to celebrate and to continue to use as a template where lives are downtrodden and prejudiced.

My first instance of hearing about Nelson Mandela came about as a result of a misquote I read in church. Many people thought Marianne Williamson, the famous spiritual writer and leader, quoted Nelson Mandela as saying: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world…” When, actually, Marianne wrote the famous quote. I’m not sure how all this misdirection about the quote came about. But, alas, this was my pathway to understanding the man, Nelson Mandela.

As I discovered his truths and his fight, my own heart rose up to reach the heights of power I needed to take on the demons in my life and with those who had less power around me, fighting the good fight of anti-apartheid for gay rights. I believe the resolve is similar. Who deserves to be separate but equal? Who deserves to pay the same taxes, but not receive the same benefits? Who can claim to be compassionate and not see or understand the pains of the GLBT community in the world, especially in America, Russia, India, and countries led by dictators and cruel laws against women and gays?

We all must rise up and speak our truth as Mandela did, even if it means imprisonment. Can any of us stand up for our rights, even if it means defying authorities? I wonder if I would have the strength to go to jail for my truth.

I once didn’t sign a recording contract with a Christian label because in the contract it politely asked if I be gay. At that time, I realized I would accept nothing more than truth for myself and my life, despite giving up what I had dreamed about most of my adult life. So, I could say that I had put my own recording career in prison for the past 30 years. Recently, though, I realized this and decided that I would quit teaching voice lessons and finally try to understand the premise on which God and Spirit would have me use my own singing voice.

Sometimes, I feel like standing on a mountain and singing at the top of my lungs, like I did in the shower this morning. A cry deep in my soul needs to be released, like the imprisoned souls met with prejudice and tyranny. I want nothing more than to express my soul without judgment and not to deny my true self, just as Mandela fought for. Let’s use the memory of his powerful battle against apartheid to muster strength to fight for our own truths today and every day!

Coffee in a Cardboard Cup #Starbucks

Coffee in a Cardboard Cup #Starbucks

Everyday the first stop for most people is either a coffeemaker, a stop at the local coffee shop, or the java station at work. Not too many people can go without their morning fix of caffeine. Personally, I can only do 3 sips of coffee in the morning, and this is only medicinal, as it wards off migraines.

Several legendary accounts exist about the origin of coffee. One involves the Sufi mystic Ghothul Akbar Nooruddin. When traveling in Ethiopia, he observed birds of unusual vitality trying the coffee berries and wanted to experience the same strength. Most stories of the origin of coffee involve people seeing some kind of animal nibbling on coffee beans and experiencing greater energy and power. Then the seeker wanted the energy for himself.

The account I heard, which obviously isn’t in the history books or Wikipedia, is that coffee was first used for enemas. This is not true, based on my research. Caffeine being used for enemas actually only dates back as far as 1930s, as it is said to detoxify the body because of its antioxidant qualities. However, the benefits don’t outweigh the many dangers, as a few people have actually died as a result of using coffee enemas—diseases include infections, sepsis (including campylobacter sepsis), sever electrolyte imbalance, colitis, polymicrobial eneteric septicemia, proctocolitis, salmonella, brain abscess, and heart failure. That’s a long list of bad for the one benefit, which was never actually scientifically proven.

So, if you’ve been under the impression that coffee enemas are the way to go, I’d do a little more research before you head in that direction. Not all naturopathic cures are proven to be the best way to cure your body of disease. Sometimes Fleet is the best cure, or just warm water in an enema bag.

Paul Walker and Fast Cars - #paulwalker

Paul Walker and Fast Cars - #paulwalker

Millions of people have grieved the loss of one of America’s famous actors who recently lost his life in a fast car headed toward a devastating wreck. Flowers and signs line the area where the accident occurred. Clearly, this man was loved for his persona in the Fast and Furious movies. My favorite was his character in “She’s All That.”

When a famous person dies unexpectedly, such as Princess Diane, I’m amazed how, even though 99.9% of the people have never even met the star, they grieve as if they were his/her best friend. How is this so? How can we become close enough to a two-dimensional character to feel the pain and anguish of loss in our own fragile hearts?

Some of what we experience is simply the surprise of the accident gives way to an outlet from our own deeply-seated grief that has been stuck in our subconscious for awhile. The grief could be about anyone or anything in our own life that feels stuck, not necessarily for the star. We are unable to express our true emotions about what really has happened in our lives, so our emotions for the star express more easily the grief we feel for something much deeper.

I believe that, for most of us who have never experienced really deep love, we accept the premise of two-dimensional love as reality. Once I had entered into a two-dimensional relationship with a man online that appeared to be in the armed service, stationed in Europe. He told me that his home was in Atlanta, and that he would be there to stay in three month. He said looked for a healthy, secure relationship. The man’s pictures were beautiful. I couldn’t believe that this man hadn’t been attached already. He was that handsome. The fact that he was even talking to me online must have been a testament to how wonderful and handsome I was. Right?

As I continued to get my daily messages from him, I didn’t question that his English was a little inconsistent. Nor did I wonder why some of his stories about the war zone he purported to exist in didn’t add up with any of the news on television or online. By the time I began to suspect he wasn’t a real person from the armed forces,  I had already convinced myself this guy actually had developed deep feelings for me. Can you believe that the man who wrote a book on relationship actually got caught in this kind of trap?

Well, it’s true. I’m admitting it because I want to help people recognize the difference between a two-dimensional relationship and a three-dimensional one. Online chatters often can portray parts of themselves that are pure fantasy. They can find pictures they wish they were and post them. Not all people seeking mates online are like this. My guess is that the vast majority is not trying to lure you into sending money to them because their combat company experienced an counterattack and was left without any food or clean clothes. “Please send money to Nigeria, where my commander will be!” sure sounds like a man who wants me for my mind, not my pocketbook.

Once I realized that this person was a fraud, I tried to contact people in the FBI, people on the website, the news, but no one really cared about my story. I guess this happens to a great many people. I wonder how many are foolish enough to actually send a money order to Nigeria. That much I did not do. To my surprise, though, the fraud complained that I was not compassionate and didn’t trust him. As I was trying to bate him, I answered few emails after that, just incase someone wanted to investigate who was using a picture of a US serviceman.

Fast cars and surprising deaths don’t have to be something you just heard on the news about an actor or actress. They can be a death of love that you conjured in your mind. Because of loneliness and despair, you let yourself be fooled by a two-dimensional online presence masquerading as real.
