Grace holds two very distinctively different definitions in the American Heritage Dictionary. One definition defines it as “in Christian belief.” The other definition is for the rest of the world—69% who are not Christians.

Definition 1: (in Christian belief) the free and unmerited favor of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings.

Definition 2: simple elegance or refinement of movement.

I did not realize how many words have different definitions to non-believers in Spirituality or Religion until I wrote my most recent book. My publisher suggested in the editing process: “I want this book to be read by everyone, including people who consider themselves Atheists or Agnostic.”

This invitation to make my book more affable for the 69% of the world who weren’t Christians gave me great joy. I wanted to share concepts that everyone could use, without the need to demand religious sanction for not agreeing with my word choices. After beginning the process, I realized that when I released all of the words that make God the creator of all, I was left with more choices than I realized: science, nature, metaphor, humanity, Mind, thoughts, emotions, evolution, and certainly grace.

I also noticed that no matter what words I chose to replace the spiritually related ones, in my mind, I could not deny that the power of grace was perfectly manifesting in many attributes of the world. For example, the way a flower blooms, the effortless flight of a bird, the sun reflecting on the lake, and a snow-capped mountain rising above the clouds. This is the kind of love we can perceive on this earth, should we choose to see it this way.

I noticed that there were even more negative words that lead us to a more obscure look at life. These words such as struggle, poverty, anxiety, war, terrorism, and devastation are all quite opposite of this power of grace. It is as if we have to deny one to get to the other. For example, what terrorist positing war could consider the smile of a baby or the beauty of a lily? What anxious person worried about paying the rent this month or feeding a family takes the time to actually smell a fragrant flower and imagine that what created this graceful beauty would surely be available to help him or her in whatever struggle anxiety brings?

We live in a world of opposites. We can always choose to see the positive instead of the negative. We can always find the grace in the mess. We can find a way to understand the world without allowing all of it to be all good or all bad. Humanity needs both sides of this Yin and Yang to be able to choose something! Will that something be to decide you are held in the hands of grace? Or will you choose to believe that what holds the world in place is terrorism?

I cannot live in a world where I wake up every day to negativity. In a world such as that, we have few choices. I would rather just stay asleep and dream of grace. At least, I can pretend I’m safe from all that the news and media suggests would torment us in one day.

Listen my friends! You are not held captive to negative thinking. Negative thinking is your choice—always. You can be held in the hands of grace simply by believing it and acknowledging that grace exists all around you. If negativity were in control of the world, we would all have been destroyed long before today.

Grace is still flowing in the streams and in the blue skies. Which vista will you see today?

On this beautiful morning, as always, I meditated before I looked at the news, my e-mail, and Facebook. In fact, most mornings I avoid all such annoying frequencies, so that I can hold on to my peace for as long as life will let me. Most days, though, life catches up with me fairly quickly and begins slinging mud. Today was no different.

I opened my Facebook page to find the first message from a friend who lives in Belgium: “I’m safe!”

I, of course, had no idea why he had written such a message, but my inclination was strong. I read further down the page to find the first stories of the horrific bombing in Belgium. I wish I could have held him in that moment, but the best I could do was be with him in mind and send a message back thanking God for his safety.

I turned on the television to see President Obama speaking of the matter to an audience of Cubans. In one part of the world, Democracy is trying to mute the voice of division, while in another part of the world, hate brings a strong moral divide.

One outcome that hate never understands, nor expects, is how disaster, injury, and injustice does not do a very good job at separating victims. It actually unites them, making all of us stronger and more compassionate.

I don’t suppose there are many people this morning or this afternoon saying, “Isn’t the world a terrible place?” They are more likely to be mourning the loss of the innocent lives and are taking the high watch as their hearts and minds merge with the social consciousness that would unite rather than separate.

Cuba, on one side of the world unifies, trying to find common ground with the United States. On the other side of the world, tragedy also brings unity, love, and compassion for a much very different reason.

You do not have to study a different language for very long before you realize that most languages have more than one word for the English word love. I have always wondered why the language that seems to be the presiding spoken language around the world would diminish the many different kinds and facets of love down to just one word.

But, after this morning, I realize that the word itself doesn’t matter, what language you speak inconsequential, even how many different variations of love there are. There is but one Love operating through each of us and in the world to create peace, even in the aftermath of slaughter.

Love always seeks to build a world that denotes You AND I, not You OR I!

I heard on NPR last night that there have been more mass killings in the U.S. this year than there are days (344). This statistic is simply dumbfounding, leaving most of us to turn on the nightly news with the expectation of “What’s next… Who’s next?”

I do not like to spread fear. The media makes me crazy when it hovers on the bad news as if it is the only news in America or the world. True, viewers crave the disasters and malfeasance, more than they look forward to watching news about love and people sharing good. But what of the billions of people who are left thinking that the world has come down to ISIS and me? Are you thinking, will I be the next one hunkering down under my desk, fearing for my life? I know the thought has certainly crossed my mind.

However, I feel it is very important to look at the big picture here. When we make poor decisions in our life, we suffer for those decisions, personally. When government makes poor decisions, those decisions affect the entire nation. The bad examples of our decisions are what is supposed to be directing us to wholeness and the CORRECT FUTURE DECISIONS. When you smoke and get cancer, you stop smoking. When you do not exercise and gain weight or have heart problems, you change your diet and begin aerobics. Bad effects lead us to better choices. That is the idea about learning lessons—personally and nationally.

What exactly are we—the nation—learning from all of this terror? Has any of Congress asked that simple question of themselves and of the people insisting on the rights of bullets? And, why, pray-tell, are they not seeing truth, fighting for it, and insisting upon change? Why are WE NOT INSISTING UPON CHANGE?

I speak, of course, about gun control or why people on the no-fly list can buy guns in the U.S. Yes, I realize that if these terrorists really wanted weapons of destruction, they would certainly find a way to get them, but why make them readily available? The answer to some has been, give us all guns to protect ourselves.

Do we really think that an army of nonprofessionals with guns is going to help protect us from bullets? Remember, more guns means more bullets flying. More guns mean more bad decisions.

More guns may mean protection for a few, but there are children and innocent bystanders between these guns and the ones who are armed with guns. Who protects these people? Would the protector be yet another nonprofessional who doesn’t know how to shoot a gun? Or even worse, would it be a person very adept at shooting, but is a radical hater of everyone and looking for the first opportunity to take personal aim?

What is your spirit telling you about all of this? Are you listening? Or do you simply avoid the news and not want to know, protecting you own soul from all of the evil and making sure you never find out?

I am not certain of the answers. But, the PEACEMAKERS must rise up either in consciousness that manifests right action, or we can, at least, begin writing letters to our congressmen. Peacemaking does not mean sitting around on our asses, meditating, and doing nothing. If you are listening to the voice of spirit about all of this, what do you hear? I really want to know?
