A Day Worth Forgetting #changingbad2great#DivineMind #ScienceofMind #SOM #SpiritualLiving

Yesterday was one of those days I wish I could have deleted with one quick keystroke. However, though the consequences of the day were confusing and painful, I took care of myself and nurtured my soul. I stayed quiet. I reached out to two counselors who have made a tremendous impact in my life in the past. Then, I spent the rest of the day curled up in my bed being quiet and waiting for the presence of Spirit to guide me to peace once again. I’m encouraged by how much my consistent meditation and studies have changed my reactions to bad news!

I know this for myself, always: I am created in the image of Spirit. Therefore, I am always… always going in the right direction and being led into prosperity, happiness, wisdom, and truth.

However, sometimes, my human self gets hurt. I’m sure we all go through this. But, here is the good that transpired from the day.

In the early morning, when I heard the devastating news, I told my sister and mother, who were nearby. They hugged me and began to nurture me. However, after about ten minutes, my sister said, “How is it that you are not furious and crying? If this had happened to me, I would be curled up in a ball in my bed in tears, screaming at God.”

It was then I had the opportunity to share my truth. “The quicker I come to love this moment and open my heart to understand, the faster I’ll heal. I know this. I don’t enjoy pain or hurt, I just don’t let it lead my life. It is just an effect. Spirit has it all in control. I just need to take time to grieve, to be alone with God, and let Spirit help me align myself to the Truth again.”

Most of you who have been reading my Discoveries know that I saw this amazing rainbow the day of birthday, just a couple of days ago. Rainbows, for me, have always meant the start of something wonderful and the fulfilling of promises. So, instead of thinking, what the hell, I just saw a rainbow and this happened—I thought, remember the rainbow! Something wonderful is about to happen and some big changes had to take place for this miracle to occur.

Then, in the evening while I was complacently watching TV, trying to get my mind off of the mental rollercoaster, I got a text message from a client who was struggling. My advice to her just so happen to be the advice I needed the entire day for myself:

Put your hand on your heart and tell yourself, “I love you.” Then, release yourself from the struggle that is all around you. Release the anxiety that says that you are always responsible for the negativity that happens to you. Let yourself off of the hook. This is just an effect.

Consider that there may be a divine lesson to be learned or a message in all of this. And most importantly, believe that tomorrow is a brand new day filled with endless possibilities.

Before I fell asleep, I got one more wonderful gift, a long letter from an old friend who had been staying in touch with me through reading my blog. She shared about how the blog had helped her through the times of her husband contracting cancer last year and the procedures he went through. I felt encouraged by her words. She had no idea how much they helped heal my heart.

Sometimes, if we stay quiet enough and open enough, in times of grave despair, God whispers to us in a gentle way and rocks us while we gain the insight we need for the coming day. I hope this helps anyone who is going through a painful breakup, a death, or a loss of a job. I’m knowing for your what I knew for myself: You are whole and complete now. No effect on this earth can change who you are and what you are made of—the stuff of Spirit. Go forth knowing that and nurture yourself as you would a small child in pain.

How “Small Procedure” Turned into Surgery! #dentalsurgery #dentalimplants

I hate pain! I avoid it at all costs. Even when I watch others in pain, I squirm and clench my jaw. No fun, it’s no fun at all. So, when I called the oral surgeon to find out how long I’d be there to finally get my implant in, I asked a few more pertinent questions: how much pain will I be in, will I be in any shape to go to rehearsal afterward, will I be able to eat afterwards? She said, “This is routine. You will be in and out in 15 minutes. No swelling and definitely no pain!”

I get to the office rather chipper. I had been to the office about ten times in preparation for this final procedure of getting the implant screwed into the anchor. So, I knew everyone. We were all joking around.

If you have never had a dental implant, this is what to expect. The first day, you get many different kinds of x-rays. Then, the surgeon must extract the dead tooth, all the way down to the tiniest of roots. So, expect a needle the size of a dinner fork tine to get jammed into your jaw about ten times. This is necessary pain so that you won’t feel the worst of the pain. Even with the numbing gel, the shot still feels as if you’re mouth is getting mutilated by Sweeney Todd.

Then you are so numb, that you don’t feel the rest. However, you hear it—the sawing, the pounding, the chiseling, and the drilling. You imagine that you will look like a squirrel afterwards from the dentist practically getting on top of you to extract the tooth. If you don’t get ice on the jaw quickly, you will. The next day you feel terrible. Get pain pills.

During the following appointment the procedure begins with preparing the bone with an anchor implant that will go directly into your jaw. The anchor has an open space for a screw to go in—eventually. Then the surgeon puts a layer of cadaver skin on the top of the wound and hopes it will merge with your gums so that the entire implant will be able to heal without air and food getting to the site to cause infection. I say “eventually” because what was supposed to be 3-4 months turned out to be eight months of going into the office and the surgeon saying, “Not healed enough yet!” I have a friend who is into his second year of waiting for the wound to heal.

The last part of the process is when they actually cut away the skin graph and dig out any bone growth to screw in the actual implant, so a cap can be placed atop the metal or plastic nub jutting from the crevice between your teeth. The reason why my small procedure turned into surgery was because bone had grown over top of the anchor and it slipped and turned a bit on its side. Honestly, I don’t know how or what the dentist and his assistance were doing, but the assistant held my hand about ten times during the process. The amount of anesthesia I was given had worn off about thirty minutes into the process.

I told the dentist I was beginning to feel pain, stabbing pain, but he promised it would all be over in another minute. He was wrong. It was an hour later. He was sweating and swearing. The assistant’s eyes went from concerned to horrified. I lay there praying it would be over soon because the pain was so great I had to do some self-hypnosis just to endure. Every time the surgeon cut into my skin, blood would squirt out from my mouth. I had blood on my face, my shirt, and cuts on my lips and tongue from the surgeon not being able to get to the implant. Finally, I hear the words I had been anticipating for ninety minutes: “The screw went in!”

After the cap is placed on the site, the entire process will be the cost of a four-year-old used car. I’m amazed!

Pain That Stops Your Spiritual Growth

Pain is one of those problems in life that creeps up on you, comes in unexpected ways, or can simply abide with you 24-hours a day. I thought I had had a great massage last week, dealing with some lower back pain, but what happened as a result of loosening some muscles is an old pain returned. Perhaps, the seizing muscles around that old pain were trying to keep me from the pain I feel now. I woke up and when I bent down to pet my dog, pain like electric shock grabbed my lower back and held on tightly.

I don’t remember lifting anything yesterday. I don’t remember a moment in the day that something felt different or peculiar in my back or hip. I simply woke up with one of the worst pains I have had in a long time. This was three in the morning. Getting back to sleep happened on a recliner with ice packs and lots of pain medication. What I would like to discuss today is how to deal with pain in such a way that it doesn’t affect your spiritual growth or your daily life.

For many years, I dealt with an arthritic condition that resulted from a bad school bus accident in the eighth grade. Yes, I have been dealing with pain for that long. However, in my search for relief, I discovered yoga about twenty-eight years ago and combined yoga with some special active muscle release exercises and a regimen of prophylactic medicine that keeps me almost pain free every day. However, every once in a while, this old back pain will flare up. It’s as if I am in the bus wreck all over again. My biggest concern, when this happens, is that my wonderful world and life will stop or that I’ll enter into a pity-me syndrome. (Right now, I just want to eat warm pudding and have my mother take care of me all day.)

Today, I decided a different tact. I woke up at the same time I always do and meditated. Strangely enough, the pain completely diminished during the meditation. When I came back to life from my meditation with my dog pawing me to go out, the pain began to creep back up. In a matter of thirty minutes I’m almost up to an 8 on a scale from 1 to 10. I decided, while I was walking Coco, that I would try to stay with my intended day, being aware of the pain, cautiously walking forward, but forward I would walk—pain or not.

The people I notice who manage life with debilitating diseases and pain are those who won’t let life stop them or get into a self-abusive decline that requires all of their energy to guilt themselves into believing they deserve the pain. Get this one affirmation now: NO ONE DESERVES PAIN. Pain happens as a result of the human condition. Even most psychological pain is a result of neurological problems that no one is personally responsible for—even depression can mostly be clinical.

Responsibility and management are two very different animals.

We are not required to blame ourselves for anything in life. However, we are asked to look at a situation we may be going through and deal with it, either to learn a lesson or gain more compassion and love. God isn’t in heaven doling out things we deserve. Otherwise, Mother Theresa would be driving a Cadillac filled with all the food she needs to feed the world.
The human condition is more of an unlucky draw sometimes, like buying a car that is a lemon. It’s brand new. It should be working perfectly. But everything goes wrong with it, including a funny smell that you can’t discern or get rid of. Most companies won’t take back a lemon. They will do everything they can to fix a new car with problems, but you end up spending half of your time at the mechanics. With the body, it’s doctor’s offices and filling prescriptive medications that happen when you get sick.

I have a friend who went through cancer. Right after her husband nursed her through her last treatments, he came down with it—twice! This couple is lovely and sweet and neither deserves to have gone through any of this mess. But, the human condition is what it is. Both adopted a very good disposition about their issues. They contacted friends. People alternated taking the couple to treatment until all was well again.

I know times of pain and disillusionment overwhelmed both of them, but they got through it with the help of loved ones, by keeping their chins up, and continuing with their work for most of the treatment. Honestly, I believe not giving into the sickness is what keeps people like my friends alive and vibrant during an awful process such as cancer.

You may ask: does God cause this pain?

The answer to that question is: When it rains are you subject to it? If lightning hits your house, would you consider God to have done that?

Some religions and spiritual theories actually do fault the person. Personally, I believe God is Love. If I always start with this premise, then I can find a way to believe that what I’m dealing with in any aspect of my life—even pain—is worth going through to get to a perfect lesson or result. We don’t know whom we will meet on the path that sometimes contains a U-turn from sickness. The NOW is perfect in all of its human challenges. If you learn to live with this concept, even pain will diminish.
