I watched the sunrise at the beach. Immediately I recognized a brand new day arising in my soul. Soft pastels of blues, pinks and yellows mused with the ocean’s tide, so close I could touch it. The amazing then happened. A new world sloped downward and opened a pathway for me to enter. The heavens were mine for a moment.
What I speak about is a gift for anyone who wants to share in the magnificence of creation. You don’t have to be spiritual to observe the powerful thrust of ocean meets new day. You do, however, have to open your heart to the experience, to the present, to the now.
More and more I am tempted to leave my cell phone, camera and past behind to experience the moment. Too often I reach forward toward a moment, only to plan for its capture for Facebook or Instagram. I realized this morning that I could never really capture any feeling.
I certainly couldn’t take a picture of beauty. I could, perhaps, snap a photo of the eyes of someone gazing at the same love I perceived as the bright orange sun snuck up so quickly and effortlessly. Had I closed my eyes for five minutes, I would have missed the entire event.
During the moments just prior to the sun showing itself to the world, I began to feel the pulse of life surging through me. It was as if my body had to begin to move. I started stretching and doing yoga moves that mirrored the waking of the world, my feet wet in the sand and body merging with the earth. I finally understood a sun salutation. As I left the past behind, I walked into the present moment and let it impress upon me its entirety.
When you allow yourself into the perfect moment of the now, you don’t have to forget about the past. There is no past in the authentic present. Today, put away your devices and let go of the idea that every moment has to be for something in the future. You are missing the precious feeling of the now.
