When other people follow leaders who are divisive and are using people for personal gain, you often find it easy to see the folly. However, have you taken a good look at whom you are following lately? Are you close enough to that leader to know whether or not he or she is bringing good into the world as a human being, compassion as an individual, and giving as much as she is getting?
These questions are something you need to be able to answer about the pastor or leader you follow from the pulpit every week. Ultimately, you will become like that person you follow; so, keep a close eye and discerning ear open for words that feel abrasive to your spirit.
Once, I was invited to a church that a friend told me was very “gay friendly.” So, before I went to the church, I called the office and asked to speak to the pastor. When I asked the pastor if she believed that gay people were going to go to hell, she would not answer my question directly. I did not go to that church because of this reason. If I cannot get a clear, definite answer about how a pastor or leader feels about a spiritual issue, then I do not need to be going to that church or center. You and I are greatly affected by what we hear from week to week by people we honor and trust. So, we must take careful steps to protect our souls.
I have some friends and clients who go to fundamentalist churches, yet they believe in metaphysical principles. I ask them why they live in two different worlds. Their answer is usually something such as this: “Because I have been going to this church for a long time. I can listen to the sermon and separate the good from the bad without having to leave. Maybe I’m here to help the people change and become less judgmental.”
I like all of those concepts, except for the biggest problem: you are listening to and are around a majority of people who are not only listening, but following negativity. So, do you think that you will NOT be affected by this? You would have to be deaf, dumb, and blind for your soul not to absorb ANY negativity and use it in some inconsistent way that is not following your true belief.
“Don’t buy into other person’s beliefs if you don’t want to be like that person!” is the advice from author and speaker, Dr. Chris Michaels. His concept is that we should always be watching for how people act, instead of simply listening to what they say. His reasoning is that many people will personally harm others with bad behavior, yet speak niceties from the pulpit.
I’m reminded of some of the greatest and most charismatic televangelists who were brought down by their own avarice and by preaching against acts that they, themselves, were taking part in, such as Jimmy Swaggart and Jim Bakker. Many evangelists have come down the pike with equally horrible messages of discrimination and greed, but find their way into many people’s hearts because of their ability to cry in public and use their ability to quote the bible to tell you what to do.
Listen, friends, gone are the days when quoting the bible is the only prerequisite for ministry. We should be following our ministers to the bank and watching where they invest your money. If they are not good stewards of your money and the church’s money, then get out of that church. You are likely to find out that, after you have donated 10K to Pat Robertson’s, most of your money had gone to his diamond mines in Zaire.
